The Angel Inn in Southend-on-Sea

Average, when I expected a little better. A starter (soup) was served cold and had to be returned. Drinks from another table were added to our bill and it took 3 days to be refunded. Good portions, plenty of parking and friendly if slightly rushed service.

I had the turkey stuffing cranberry baggette and is was terible. The baggette was white doughy and bland in fact I only had a mouthful, it should have been heated up, it was just like undercooked bread, this was the third bad meal in a row and I have been going there for years, I wonder if they have changed the chef

Nice lunch, waiter Alan very pleasant. Will go more often. For dog lovers the menu includes a doggie sausage. How sweet.

Having been to the Angel for Pie and Pint nights we decided to try the menu and in particular the tapas. We had 3 dishes each and although individually priced there is a fair offer offer if you take 3. Everything was cooked to perfection. Breadcrumbed dishes super crispy. All very tasty. Plenty to eat and no room for deserts which did look a little pricy. The Angel has quite an extensive menu and we will be back but it will be difficult to resist the tapas. We ate in the dining room and for a Saturday night not overly busy.

The Angel hosted a charity event for us and were absolutely brilliant. All the staff are so friendly, attentive and kind. The food was delicious. Can't recommend The Angel highly enough.

Nice pub which on a Saturday evening was surprisingly empty. Decent car park, nice bar and tables to eat there or in the restaurant. Can't fault the food or service, all excellent. Nice choice on menu too. A bit pricey (£170 for four, three courses and drinks) but not overly so.

Alan was amazing! Super helpful and even more helpful when it comes to gluten free customers! We can’t wait to come back!!

Had a lovely Sunday Roast for 4. The food came out quickly and was hot. The staff were friendly and attentive. They were quick to bring us some more gravy and swapped our roast potatoes as the ones we were given were hard in the middle. Would definitely come back again.

My sister and I travel up from Cornwall to visit our dad in Thorpe Bay. We always make sure we go for a meal at The Angel. The staff are so friendly and welcoming. Alan is particularly great in the restaurant; nothing is too much trouble- he is a real asset to the place. Food is always tasty, good value and plentiful. Good selection of wine and beers. Would love The Angel to come to Cornwall! Thank you all for a lovely evening.

The Angel is my regular, admittedly I haven’t been for a while due to personal reasons, work etc etc. my daughter came for lunch as soon as we walked in we were greeted by a very friendly man behind the bar( sorry I didn’t catch his name) and he attended to us after serving a customer, he took us straight to our table, and advised us that Alan would be our waiter. Alan came over friendly as ever and took our drink order, then our meal order, the food was absolutely superb my daughter ordered Taoas and I ordered the cheese ploughman’s and chips which are my favourite. They asked if everything was ok, and once we finished, we asked Alan if we could take the remaining bits home, which he happily agreed. We both had a dessert, the Lemon Possett was so light and refreshing. We asked for the bill and then paid. Overall 10/10 Alan was fantastic, friendly, nothing is too much trouble for him or any of the staff, I will be returning. 5 🌟

We had a lovely dinner for 4 of us plus a 3 year old. The problem came when we ordered dessert. It was taking over 30 mins and our toddler was getting very tired. When we queried it they just said they were very busy which they weren’t! Such a shame

A perfect place. Alan give me two Ale beers to taste, I never Saw this. Better than wine tasting in m'y country, La France!

Went here with my family for the first time as it was my mum's birthday and it was a fantastic visit. My sister and her husband and my mum do go quite a lot. Fantastic atmosphere,service, and food is out of this world.

Best pub dinner i have had in a long time

My girl friend and I went for lunch as it was her birthday. It was a sunny day so we sat outside. A short time into eating lunch, my friend moved to sit on my side of the bench as she was hot. Suddenly she felt faint and lost all colour on her face. Very quickly a gentleman sitting near us brought my friend water and suggested helping her inside but she couldn’t stand up at that point. Then Gemma, who works at the Angel Inn, appeared and brought iced water then an ice pack for my friend. Then the manager arrived to help us. I can’t praise everyone who helped enough, especially Gemma. We eventually moved inside where it was much cooler where Gemma and the manager repeatedly checked to ask if my friend was feeling better. They were fantastic. And, the food was good, not that either my friend or myself managed to finish our meal. Can’t praise the staff, manger and customers enough. There are good people left in this world. Thank you all so much for all your help and concern.

The pie and pint night is very good value and the pie was good with plenty of meat.. well worth a visit

Had probably the best dinner I've ever eaten out! Starter and main different gravy. Can't wait to go back again this time desert as well. Really friendly staff. Highly recommended

Was really looking forward to lunch with my daughter she was treating me . We ordered tapas and had a fairly long wait and was really looking forward to it but was very disappointed . The food was tasteless apart from the beef but a lot of that was chewy and my daughter was upset because she wanted it to be nice for me . We couldn’t eat it and the waitress was lovely and refunded our money . Love the place but after our food and seeing others , I do think the food has gone downhill 🥲

The building itself is stunning. Very old but beautifully maintained, like stepping back in time. I found the service to be quite slow and the bar is tiny. The other thing that put me off is it had quite a clicky atmosphere. Clearly full of regular locals that like to hog the bar space drinking. They wouldn’t even move over so people could get to the bar to order a drink. This probably isn’t surprising when you see beyond middle age men purposely park they their sports cars right outside the pub so everyone can see when there is clearly enough space to park out the back.

Terrible place nowadays. Every table within the bar area is always reserved for the manager and his "Friends". Kitchen staff want to stop working at 7pm. The food is below par at the best of times. Bar staff are either miserable or look unkept. Not a good look for a Green King Pub. The nearby Angel Inn is a whole different experience. Spending my money there from now on.

Lovely place to meet friends & family

Met family for lunchtime. Pre booked a table for four Menu is good with a nice selection of meat and fish dishes. The food was very nicely cooked and presented. There was a good dessert menu too. Prices are good.It was not too expensive. There is a separate bar and restaurant. The restaurant is quieter and more intimate. Staff are very polite and attentive.

A lovely local pub and on my list of “must visits” whenever I come to see friends and family in Southend. The food is always well prepared and of very good quality - especially given the reasonable price point. Definitely in the top tier of pub food! There’s usually a strong selection of beers and wines, though the real stand out is always the staff - special thanks to Jodie for being such a great host the last time we visited!

Great food and friendly service

What a beautiful pub, very atmospheric with thatched roof and a warm welcome as we arrived. As an Abbot Ale fan, I was even happier to find it on draft and in excellent condition. The food was pleasant, with the main courses defeintely being better than the deserts. The mushroom fajita was nice and I'd have it again, although it wasn't that spicy and had a quite a bit of oil left in the dish. The sticky toffee bread and butter pudding sounded amazing, and different - but didn't quite have the toffee flavour explosion. So, love the pub and would happily eat there again. and the following shows my bad taste in humour and isn't really related...... After God created 24 hours of alternating darkness and light, one of the angels asked him, "what are you going to do now?" God said, "I think I'm going to call it a day." How I Mark I may mark differently to some other reviewers, some might see this as harsh, others may see it as fair. But here's how I look at it: 5 star - WOW. I want to go back and look forward to doing so. They delivered everything expected and more. The 'more; is normally about the service or attitude of the staff. 4 star - GOOD. They delivered everything I wanted and a bit more. I recommend them and would go back. 3 star - OK. They delivered what I expected, I would go back if I needed to, although don't currently plan on doing so. 2 star - Not very good. I didn't get what I expected and the service wasn't good. I don't recommend this place. I might get dragged back here, although will always try to avoid it 1 star - This was rubbish. Don't go there, I certainly won't go there again. I didn't get what I wanted, the people were unhelpful and I didn't enjoy it in any way.e

Alan our waiter very friendly and gave service with a smile. Food always outstanding and would always recommend this pub which has an extensive choice of food.

Service and pub is warm and welcoming, but the food was not nice at all. Chicken strips- were the worst ive tasted ever. Dont even think they have tried them. Roast dinner meat was okay. But potatoes tasted old and reheated and the veg tasted like sewage. Food over priced specially for the quality of food. The welcome by the gentlemen there was really lovely. And the man that served us with drinks could have helped us out, what kids drinks they had as was a total guess. Won't be returning. Ps the chef could do with some new chef attire.

Amazing service, amazing food and amazing atmosphere. The manager is a real pro at making you feel welcome and remembered. Emma has excellent banter with him which makes the atmosphere fun.

First visit for Sunday lunch great staff but a little disappointed with the food

Haven't been to this lovely old pub for a while and I was very pleasantly surprised at just how good it is now. Fabulous greeting from friendly and helpful staff, and they do terrific coffee. There's a lot of choice to eat, including specials. We went on "fish Friday" which is clearly popular as all the tables were taken by the time we left. Dog-friendly too. Good service, fair priced, plentiful portions. I'd recommend.

Nice atmosphere, staff were efficient and friendly. Food was average. I had chilli which was pretty bland and with no chilli heat at all. I should have complained but it was my partners birthday and I didn't want to make a fuss.

Just visited the Angel Inn for a pie and a pint food was delicious only negative was that some staff were petting the dogs in the bar and then proceeding to pour and serve drinks and food without washing there hands surely this is basic hygiene when working in the food industry very disappointed this practice should be stopped by the management

Lovely cosy traditional pub. Brilliant food and great service and atmosphere. Manager very attentive to ensure we had a great evening with our friends. We booked a bar area table (limited) by the open fire. Would highly recommend and return soon. Ps dog friendly too.

We went in on a whim on a Friday night. They were full but as we were leaving they alerted us to a cancellation and sat us immediately. All the staff were so so friendly, personable and attentive. We were served by ALAN who was just the loveliest man. Food was flawless and so filling! Best ribs I've ever had, fell off the bone is an understatement! We were in the dining room but it was relaxed enough to have a pint and play some cards as well. Definitely will come back, a great new local has been discovered!

What can I say. Amazing place to go. Lovely atmosphere, food outstanding and service was second to none. Alan our server was amazing 10 out of 10 for him alone. So friendly, helpful and just awesome. Alan was a brilliant host was very chatty and had great humour when it came to serving us. Was very accommodating and always was happy to help when a request was made. 100% recommend coming as good food and drink to the highest standards

Very enjoyable meal. We chose the smaller plate Roast Dinner, which was still a decent sized meal.

Today, we enjoyed a delicious lunch, attractively presented, here. Staff were welcoming and attentive. Special mention to Alan, who made sure that everything was as we would wish. I had not visited The Angel for some years, having in the past found the service very slow. No such problem today. We were gently eased into ordering and then our choices were swiftly served, piping hot. But we were not hurried to vacate our table in the busy restaurant. In all, a warm, relaxing and delightful experience. I shall visit again soon!

We had a pre Christmas meal here which was excellent. They had "small plates" on the menu which are just a little smaller than the usual serving which for my partner and I was perfect, thus allowing us to have 3 courses. The bars always have excellent, well kept ales.

Its a shame to leave this review but we was really annoyed about the situation and the way it was handled today. We came in and asked for a table of 4 the lady was great help and said to us “unfortunately there’s two people sitting on a table for 4, as soon as they leave we are able to go there” in the mean time we sat now down and ordered some drinks. About 30 minutes past and the couple left. I got up and asked the gentleman if we can now sit down at that table and he laughed and said no we are fully booked. I said the lady informed us when the couple leave we can sit for food. Clearly they gave the table to someone else. The man walked away and never came back to speak to us regarding this. Pretty poor customer service and lack of communication between yourself. Very disappointing as the food we saw looked very good.

Christmas get together with friends, and we were welcomed warmly. Having been before and knowing portion sizes, we skipped a starter and went for mains. My lamb, pea and mint pie was delicious, my friends had turkey Christmas dinner and mushroom stroganoff, both were announced as being lovely. Following up with the baileys chocolate cheesecake was a fantastic choice for two of us and crumble for the other, all very very good. Lovely atmosphere and a friendly and efficient waitress, we will be back again very soon.

Great place manager was friendly and welcoming

We were greeted as we entered. The staff were very good; friendly, polite and very professional. There was a large selection of dishes and specials, you may think too large to be well cooked and presented, the food we had was first class. And I learned they have quite a large 'brigade' hence the large choice of dishes and the quality of the food. On leaving a member of staff came to thank us for eating at the establishment, quite charming. I thoroughly recommend a visit.

My husband, myself and two friends had an excellent lunchtime meal at The Angel Inn yesterday. We were welcomed into the restaurant by Nick who made us all comfortable in the cosy surroundings. All our meals were delicious, beautifully presented and very ample in size. All the staff were very friendly and we were very grateful to Nick for helping my husband to our car as he is not very mobile. We appreciated his help and nothing was too much trouble for him. We will really recommend this delightful restaurant to all our friends.

Food was reasonably priced with huge portions. Would love to come back for a Sunday roast some time.

We had a wonderful lunch today, was greeted by Alan the manager, couldn’t do enough to accommodate myself and my husband, due to his back condition, found us comfortable seats at short notice. We were served by Jody, such a lovely lady, warm , friendly and professional, nothing was too much trouble , cannot recommend this wonderful pub and their staff enough. Ist class .

Beautiful, absolutely gorgeous. Quality and service is unbelievable. Best meal I’ve had in a long time. I’m looking forward to going back.I had chicken and chorizo, skewers for starters. And a lamb stew for main. The meat and flavour in both courses was outstanding. reasonably priced and great atmosphere, beautiful surroundings, and welcoming staff.

Lunch for 4. Good sized portions and we all agreed all meals were delicious. This is easily becoming our favourite pub restaurant. Overall good value for money.

We were looking for somewhere different to eat, and thought we’d try here. We weren’t disappointed. The menu has lots of gluten-free options, and it was so hard to choose. Between the 4 of us we chose the stroganoff, the small chicken goujons , the steak and ale pie, and a gluten-free fish pie for me. The 3 main meals were enormous, delicious and served piping hot. In fact, 2 of us couldn’t manage to finish our plates. No room for dessert either. Staff were warm, friendly and extremely helpful. I didn’t think prices were excessive either. Pie £17, stroganoff £15 and fish pie £16. Good value, and certainly a place we will return to.

Had a fantastic meal with family. Made very special for us by Alan and his wonderful staff . Food was beautifully prepared and served made our stay a splendid experience.

The food was undercooked, and in the case of their rack of lamb, almost raw, don't touch the beef and ale pie! which arrived cold and with soggy pastry the rice on the mushroom stroganoff was cold and soggy like rice pudding , the whole experience was ruined, on what was a special birthday. They in spite of sending numerous emails have refused to refund any of the cost of the meal. My daughter who is a professional chef, said that she had never seen such poor quality food. Avoid this place at all costs !!

I confess to visiting The Angel more than most, for meetings with old friends or just time out for food, it cannot be beaten. The menu is extensive and tastefully considered, in addition there are true specials changing every day. The food is superb, the service matches it, served today by Jodie & Alan, my thanks for a great time as ever. Tastefully decorated, large car park, it cannot be beaten locally. Many thanks, Bruce

As a local I'm biased as i already knew what a fantastic pub it was, but we trusted the angel with our wedding reception and it exceeded our expectations as not only was the food absolutely fantastic, but the service we were given by Fiona and the pubs incredible staff was literally second to none. I've since been constantly bored by people telling me the food was the best they've had at a wedding (especially the fish dish) and the entire wedding party can then testify to what a superb pub it is, with an excellent atmosphere and great selection of ales. Can't thank them enough for making our day special.

A lovely little pub which serves amazing home cooked food. Nothing ever too much trouble. Fantastic on dealing with allergies, baby/child friendly. Staff are so helpful and friendly.

I have been a regular customer of The Angel for many years and have always loved the atmosphere and welcome . Today we had a family group Of four in the bar area and we all ordered different mains . Absolutely exceptional food and good value for money also. Cannot recommend enough. Extremely thankful to have such a great venue on my doorstep.

Have been here a couple of times recently for lunch with friends and have really enjoyed both the atmosphere and the food offerings too. The menu is extensive with something to suit all tastes. There's also a specials board with quite a few more options too. Everything we had was served very quickly and was well presented and delicious. The staff are friendly(especially the man who I assume must be the owner). We never felt rushed out either even though other customers were coming in for tables all the time. Will definitely be coming back soon.
