We were recommended the hotel by a friend. It was easy to find and fairly central in Chippenham the room we had was excellent, it’s an old 17th century building so has the creaks and conditioning of a building of its age , breakfast was easy and varied having a buffet / help yourself style . even as old as the building was our bathroom was modern and well presented. Had a swim every day , the gym attached had all the usual equipment, would recommend again, the staff were pleasant and helpful

Over the years I have used the Angel Hotel Chippenham to meet up with Family, Friends and colleagues. Mainly using the lounge to enjoy a coffee and a chat we have on occasions also stayed for lunch. I was very surprised, when meeting up with family a couple of weeks ago, we were charged an additional £3 each for parking our cars in the Hotel carpark. No manager was available to discuss this with at the time. It seems wrong to me that customers, using the lounge and/or restaurant are charged an additional fee to park.

Very poor lunch. Very overpriced plain panini, cheese not melted, no garnish, paid £2 extra to have half a bowl of chips which appeared to be yesterday’s jacket potato cut into wedges and fried. Cappuccino served and didn’t even fill half a cup. No cutlery or napkin brought to table with food. When ordering at the bar the manager interrupted the server and proceeded to have a conversation mid-order. Poor service and poor food. Will not return .

Called in on our way home to Coventry for Sunday lunch, it's beautifully clean and spacious and very pleasant atmosphere. Had roast beef, chicken and pork and it was delicious, only point I would make is some greens would be nice. Desserts were delicious and the lovely lady attending us went out of her way to get us some custard for the absolutely divine bread and butter pudding. All round excellent and our friends were very impressed, announcing that they might well give Wetherspoons a miss and seek out similar establishments in future as the prices were also very reasonable. Ignore the moaners, I suspect they get an endorphin rush from constantly grizzling and whining about anything and everything. Nothing to complain about here.

As occasional visitors to the area, it is over five years ago that we last visited the Angel. Nevertheless, the things that we most liked about this establishment were still very evident. We arrived later than we had planned, early afternoon rather than lunchtime as planned, so opted for the ham hock lite bite plus a bowl of chips with tonics as drinks. Mid-afternoon, on a Thursday, it was quiet but the staff were fully engaged. We interacted with several staff and we were very impressed by a young man, dark hair, who was very knowledgeable re the recent history of the hotel and how it was responding to the challenges to the business. A memorable but all too brief chat that exceeded our expectations re bringing us up to date!

I met a friend for coffee and a catch up and we sat in the lounge area, looking out over the shops. There were inly about 8 couples sat at tables. My friend and I went to order coffee and pastries for us both. There wasn't any staff to be seen in the bar area. After about 2 minutes, a man went behind the bar. No smile, no "May I help you". Clearly we were stood at the bar for a reason. So, I asked for two coffees and two pastries. To say he was slow, was an understatement. He didn't speak at all except to repeat our order, confirm it and then held the scanner for me to pay by card. I asked to pay by cash, my preferred method of payment. I only had cash in my purse. No credit or debit card. "We don't take cash" was the response. OK, I said, well I don't want to pay by card. A mumbled "That's all we take, and have since Covid19" Not the polite apologies I was expecting. No cash payment available, so we left and went to a coffee shop in town near. We were greeted with a smile and a nice welcome. Cash accepted! Not everyone has a credit/debit card for many reasons. The lack of accepting cash, has just lost you a customer be it for coffee and pastries or lunch!

There is a delay in writing this review as I was waiting for a satisfactory reply from management however as the reply was not satisfactory I have decided to write about our dreadful experience. We booked for Christmas Day Lunch following a difficult year for us as a family and thought this would be a treat...how wrong could I be! We arrived on Christmas Day expecting a festive atmosphere but that was seriously lacking. We asked for a Gin and Tonic but was told they had no tonic, my son asked for a pint of Guiness to be told 'we don't sell Guiness' my husband asked what draught ales they had to offer (as there was no badges o the pumps) to be told they had no ales on draught, they had lager or cider only! Once seated and the starter arrived Terrine with Crostini, I asked the waitress for more crostini to go with my pate as it was very small, she immediately corrected me 'that is Terrine not Pate' then said its not something they normally would do but she would check with the kitchen first (I don't normally pay £99 a head for dinner!) she came back with 1 yes 1 crostini we had to ask a man waiter for more and he came back with 3 or 4. The main came out which we all ordered Turkey Christmas dinner which was all served up on the plate including gravy, no separate bowls of vegetables or a gravy boat which is the least we'd expect. The Turkey was processed and I'm sure the vegetables were frozen. The sweet was just as uninspiring Apple tartin. We had table crackers, no gift in there just cheap crackers with a joke and a tongue twister. In addition to the above there was aircon on in the restaurant which made it cold and we assume this was for the benefit of the staff. In the reply from the general manager he stated there was in fact ale on draught - untrue as the barman told us there wasn't and as my husband normally only drinks ale he wouldn't have chosen lager and as previously mentioned there was no badges on the pumps. He said that he received only positive feedback that day (I have since found out someone else was as dissatisfied with the whole experience) I was asked why I didn't make it known on the day but what could they have done? Cooked a fresh Turkey? re-served the vegetables and gravy separate? Customers shouldn't be put in a position where there is a need to complain ever but especially on a festive day where we wanted to celebrate. Part of the reply from the Group Operations Director states as follows: " I am genuinely not trying to be argumentative but can categorically assure you that both the Turkey & Vegetables were fresh and not frozen or processed. I have access to all the hotels procurement records and at no hotels of ours we do this. With regard to the bar products again I can assure you that Wainwrights Golden Ale was and is available on draught so am equally disappointed that your husband was not offered this" A complete let down for the hotel group Best Western.

Stopped here for afternoon tea as part of a coach holiday. Initially looked good tables nicely set out, slightly surprised by the hefty looking coffee mugs on the tables though. Waiter came round with glasses of mulled wine, left our table, plus one other. Asked if we could have mulled wine too, and he said yes, it. didn’t appear. Asked a waitress and it still didn’t appear. Then a waiter came round and said the food was ready. Would we like to go and help ourselves? No, not really. We were all expecting the usual type of afternoon tea with the sandwiches and cake brought to the table on s little stand. However, there was no choice so we all went to a rather small area and did our best to serve ourselves. Plates ran out. The sandwiches provided were not those advertised. We were expecting Turkey and cranberry , egg mayonnaise, cheddar cheese, and chutney , honey roast ham with tomato and mustard . We actually got Cucumber sandwiches, cheese and pickle plus ham on its own. Mince pies were quite nice. Scones were okay although cream and jam also ran out although I believe it was replaced. Spiced chocolate brownie, which was promised which was offered did not materialise. Instead there was some squares of what I think is known as tray bake. Some little triangles of cheesecake, some had a bit of strawberry on them and some didn’t. The mulled wine eventually materialised and the waiter said it was on the counter and we could’ve helped ourselves because it was self service. I pointed out, now with clenched teeth, that he served every other table. The answer to that was that they wanted to get everything started and prevent to a big queue. I replied that three other members of staff could’ve told me this when I enquired. I didn’t have the tea but my husband and two other people on our table although that’s rather an exaggeration. As a coffee drinker, even I recognised that this was just coloured water and any connection with a teabag had been several teapots ago. Altogether, it was most disappointing. On the plus side, though, the toilets are clean. I don’t know whether we received inferior service and food because we were part of a coach party. Do I recommend? No I don’t. Will I go back? No, I won’t.

Popped in for a drink and light bite whilst waiting to catch a bus home. It’s hard to not mess a toasted panini and chips up right?? And they were not busy. Apparently not! Tasteless and not even hot. Tiny bowl of warm chips for £2! Seriously? Should have looked at the reviews first. Shan’t be coming back. Average at best and I’m being kind. I’m expecting a ‘you should have brought it to our attention’ response but my early response will be ‘should we have had to?’ Right first time approach perhaps? Oh dear!

We took our elderly mum for lunch during a quick visit to see her from Birmingham. Ordered food and drinks, the tea took forever to arrive. Mum had ordered a light bite but this was served as a starter so we ended up watching her eat while waiting for ours to arrive some 30 mins later. Did complain but the staff weren’t overly bothered. Had to ask for cutlery. Food was mediocre. It was fairly quiet so it wasn’t because they were busy. Think we’ll avoid in the future. Make sure you put your car reg in their machine.

The room was of a good size but we were on the top floor and the room is excruciatingly stuffy and hot, no air conditioning, the window would serve a dolls house better! The hotel are still using single use plastic containers and soap bars in the bathrooms, also the basin was blocked. Our room was the first as you come off the landing, we were subjected to the lobby door banging into the early hours and first thing in the morning. Breakfast was very good, I could not fault it. Ample free car parking but you must remember to enter your registration at reception. Dog friendly hotel.

We stayed in The Angel Hotel this weekend just gone. I stayed here a few years ago in the newer part and it was great. This time we were housed the main block, namely The Sutton Suite, which was very small. It was a corner room so half the room is cut off, much smaller than say a premiere inn room. Anyway, it was small but we were not going to complain over a few feet of floor space. Then came the party. The hotel had an event on and we were housed above it. It honestly felt like we were trying to sleep above a nightclub, the walls were vibrating. I recorded the sound from our room, shame I can’t upload videos. I complained to the duty manager but was offered no alternative . My wife was 7 months pregnant and I had a 12 month old baby , neither of them could sleep. We contemplated leaving at 11pm but my wife was feeling rough from the pregnancy and didn’t want to travel…so we persevered . The music stopped at midnight and we finally got to sleep, but it was horrendous . Extremely poor planning on the hotels behalf. On the plus side the reception lady was friendly and made an effort with our baby…..but unfortunately I think I’m put off Best Westerns for life. It really has left a bad taste that experience . If anyone plans on staying , request to stay in the newer bit. Cheers

It is very unprofessional of them. But at least the Rob Roy Hotel was nice and the food was some of the best that we have ever had in a hotel. The rooms were very nice and clean. All through the journey not once did the driver tell us his name or interact with the passenger. He was a rude sullen horrible uninformative person. Never again will I use this coach company. Also there was no handsanatiser which I could see to use getting on and off the coach. Use majestic coaches much more professional.

As we attempted to explain to the waitress that in fact we had indeed booked for half eight we were met with a very dubious and rather rude response. Nonetheless we went on to choose our meals from the limited options provided only to be informed they were not available. Suffice to say, the meal we did eventually receive was dreadful and the atmosphere was non-existent, the bill at the end was laughable for the food and service we received. We went in for lunch last Friday as it is a nice relaxing place. Usually just go in for coffee but thought we would have a bit of lunch, wish we never bothered. We ordered 2 panini’s which took a little while to arrive this wasn’t a problem as we were chatting (the evening people on the table next to us had to ask where there food was as it took so long). When the food arrived both panini’s were anemic looking the chips were limp and and only slightly warm. The waiter asked if we wanted anything else and I asked for mayonnaise, we waited for it to arrive after 10 minutes decided it had been forgotten so carried on eating by now the chips were cold and discovered that the Brie bacon and cranberry had no cranberry. But decided to carry on and eat as we didn’t have time to wait to be served again. I was on the last mouthful of food when the mayo finally arrived I told the waiter it was to late and I had no cranberry, he could obviously see my meal was just about gone but offered to get a pot of cranberry. Very disappointing for the price, I don’t mind paying if it is worth it but on this occasion it was not. Wish we just went to Nero for lunch which would have been half the price and much better quality.

As we were walking up to and into the hotel a member of the hotel staff was walking just infront with shop bought cakes and scones from Tesco. We did wonder if this was our afternoon tea they had freshly bought from Tesco for a fraction of the price. We went to the bar and were seated, within 2 minutes of being seated our afternoon tea arrived. I would like to point out that at no point we're we asked of any dietary requirements. Not on booking or when we arrived. The sandwiches were okay but bland and the turkey and cranberry one tasted more like turkey and strawberry jam. The cakes and scones were obviously the ones that we saw come in from Tescos, as they looked and tasted identical to those that Tesco sell. The tea portions are stingy and we never saw a member of staff after our afternoon tea was delivered. The fact that they advertise the afternoon tea as including fresh homemade cakes is laughable. The hotel is beautiful! The room was lovely and clean, we had everything we needed and when we had a problem, called reception and someone came up to help us within 5 minutes. However, the major downfall was the restaurant. I was given the evening menu on the 1st evening there, a basic 4 starters, 4 mains, 3 desserts. By the time we were seated after they had cleared out a rowdy wake, the menu had totally changed and was not appealing. Breakfast was a worse. A total shambles, the waiting staff need basic training including common sense! Our breakfast order was lost, meanwhile the rest of the help yourself breakfast supplies were running out. Instead of refilling when running low, the waiting staff were ALL behind the bar. After 50 minutes our cold, hard breakfast arrived. They had the order wrong aswell, and it was revolting. If staying here I highly recommend a walk into the town for a much nicer meal, only 5/10 minutes away.

I never like leaving negative reviews but I feel this feedback needs to be shared. My first room stank of smoke so they relocated me. The housekeeping there is well below an acceptable standard-dirty bathroom, hole in the bedsheet, dust everywhere. Despite having a twin room, only one set of towels?

My family and I came to The Angel for Sunday lunch today on recommendation of a friend and we were thoroughly impressed with the service, food and environment. The staff were friendly and helpful, something you don’t see everywhere nowadays, and nothing was too much trouble. My elderly father is very hard of hearing, much like myself, and we were treated extremely well, with the staff repeating themselves when we didn’t hear something with absolute kindness and professionalism.

Attended The Angel after having previously been here and enjoyed the food and atmosphere only to be extremely disappointed when attending with friends yesterday. Upon arrival our booking could not be located, we were left just standing around for approx 10 minutes with multiple "management" stood around having a social rather than asking if there was anything they could assist with. Eventually we located our seats and the drinks orders came. I attended with friends , one of which is very heavily pregnant ( due next week) and specifically called the venue the day before to check that they did decaf tea. She was advised, yes of course. So on ordering our drinks she was then told that they didn't have any and that she could have a glass of water instead. What a joke. The afternoon tea itself then arrived. I had 2 egg mayo sandwiches and left the cake as it was so dry. The rest of the bread on the sandwiches was rock hard and curling. Then the scones looked like a 2 yr old had made them. Honestly never experienced anything like it. Needless to say we won't be returning and I would urge others not to bother.

I visited the Angel hotel last week for a drink with a friend. I ordered a Pimms & lemonade and it was truly painful to watch the bar man , then calling for another lady to help him ‘ try’ to make it !!! -I would have thought this would not have been a difficult ask, but it honestly took 20 minutes and my friend thought I’d left her sitting in the courtyard garden and gone home!

We had lunch here today and it was disappointing. There were hardly any staff to order and when we found a waiter he messed us about telling us we could order but he then walked away! When we ordered he then said he could not take cash and that we would have to order from the bar. No staff there either. In the end we sat down and called the waiter to the table. I ordered a sandwich as I was told that they have lovely fresh chunky bread. What a let down. The granary bread I had was flat and moist. The filling tasted only of mayonnaise and not the egg and cress I was looking forward to. Won't eat there again.

I ordered the portobello mushroom and halloumi burger which was delicious. It came served with a spicy sauce and a bucket of fries. They unfortunately didn’t have any mayonnaise but they staff were very friendly and helpful. My dad had the fish and chips which looked great and his wife had the fishcake starter as a main dish and was quite happy with it.

Don't let the fact that this is a Best Western put you off. I like this hotel for business and leisure. The hotel itself is large and whilst quite quaint/quirky in areas, it's all to a good standard, well maintained, clean and welcoming. The named rooms are interesting in the original part of the hotel, whilst having that Ye Olde Wonky feel, it's all to a very high standard with the same quality and facilities provided throughout the rest of the hotel. My ticklist is always complete here.

I've stayed here on a least 15 occasions and, whilst it is generally fine, breakfast is always a chore. Encouragingly I arrived at breakfast this morning to see they had switched to a buffet style. That should overcome the slow delivery of breakfast. I took a table and had breakfast, with steamed hash browns due to the food heaters being too hot, and in 15 minutes was unable to attract the attention of anyone serving to order coffee. There were fewer than 20 people in the room and I saw the staff spend more time adjusting the lids on the food containers than checking on customers. Breakfast should be the easiest thing to get right, how can you consistently get it wrong?

Overall, five out of six of our party were disappointed. The menu was essentially "pub grub", but not at pub prices. The food was generally good, but not value for money. Although the restaurant was not busy, they had run out of two of the most popular choices on the desert menu. We were then told that one of the choices was available, only to be told after we'd placed our order that it was not available. The waiting staff were embarrassed. We were offered free deserts to make up for the mistake, but overall the experience was not what was expected from a class hotel. Unlikely to return in a hurry.

It was the day of the Soapbox Derby, a local event which we decided to go to and booked a table for lunch at the Angel Hotel. The food was not bad but despite asking for well done Beef it was rare when it came. However our main complaint was that the dining room staff all seemed to be inexperienced trainees. They were all very pleasant and were trying to do their best but to all intents and purposes they were unsupervised and the result was chaotic and very unpleasant. We have been there to weekday lunch before where they operate a system of ordering at the bar but will be wary of going again until I feel confident that have achieved a reasonable standard of supervision in the restaurant, which is essential not just to provide a good service to the customers but also to provide the staff with the right sort of training for them to be able to work unsupervised. To cap it all I realised when I got home that I had been charged £11.00 for a small glass of Pepsi and a glass of Elderflower cordial and Soda. Not a very nice experience at all and it spoiled what should have been a fun day.

This has been my husband's go to restaurant for many years but it's no longer a place we'll recommend or go back to. Our first meal here this visit was a full English breakfast and the meal was OK, tasty enough but not very hot. Mine was warm at best and had we not waited for twenty minutes for it to arrive, I would have sent it back. We were there at 9 am, with only two other couples being served. They were not busy but that did not help the level of service at all. The pastries on this day had been pretty picked over and the area itself was unkept and could have been straightened up, crumbs swept away and juices refilled. Our second meal there was lunch the next day - my sister was served a hard, shriveled up piece of lasagna. As she carried the pitiful plateful to the front, the manager saw what she had been served and apologized. We felt that as a result of his awareness, things would be resolved quickly, but that was not the case. From that point, it took another five to seven minutes for the wait staff to return to our table to inform her there was no more lasagna. Since my husband and I had already been served our meals, she ordered a beef burger thinking it would be quick to arrive, which was not the case. We finished our meals, ordered another round of drinks and after twenty minutes went to inquire where her meal was, which came out about three minutes later. In this case, another manager came to the table bearing the gift of a bottle of wine of the kind my sister had been drinking. We appreciated the gesture and apology but having had similar service issues the day before we were quite disappointed. Our third and final attempt to patronize The Angel restaurant was at 10:02, two minutes after they quit serving breakfast. We were in town for the funeral of my husband's mother and had a few things to do before we were able to have breakfast. I understand the need to shift from breakfast to lunch service and had it been 10:15, I would understand the inability to shift gears that far into the hour. But, as of 10:02, it was obvious that there was no desire to offer us any options at all. When I asked if it was possible to get a full breakfast, after a quick glance up at the clock the employee replied just "no." Not a "let me see if they might be able to get two more meals in"... not "instead of a full breakfast we could..." just "no." There were still pastries and juice on the service bar, but apparently selling two more meals was of no importance to them. We will not be back.
