Stayed in the nearby village Feering, got recommended The Angel by a few locals it did not disappoint, very welcoming of us and our dogs, really nice vibe within the pub. Food was incredible, 3 of us had the roast beef and one had the pie (highly recommend) Jack who was our waiter couldn't do enough for us and was polite throughout

By far the worst experience we’ve ever had, totally ruined our birthday celebrations with rude staff and exceptionally bad food…. We hardly ate anything due to being inedible, and was refused any type of refund… Avoid Avoid Avoid

We came on a Sunday afternoon with our friends and their baby. We were served drinks promptly and ordered food. 2 of us had roast dinners, beef and pork. One cheese and bacon burger and one veggie burger. All of the meals were great, however special mention of the cheese and bacon burger which apparently was Best Burger EVER. Friendly staff and reasonably priced we will definitely be returning.

We was received with a warm welcome from the staff member called Jake. He looked after all 4 of us through out our meal. I had fish & chips & the fish was extra small. Mentioned it to Jake and with no fuss, they bought me out an extra piece of fish. Definitely one piece cut into 2 so beware of a small amount fish. Jake rectified the problem so we left as happy customers.

We (2 adults/ 2 children) dined on a Sunday lunchtime and were pleased to have the option of a normal menu running alongside roast dinners as not all pubs offer this on a Sunday. There are quite a few options to choose from. I would say the pricing is pretty standard for a pub/restaurant. Jack was extremely helpful and friendly. It was so refreshing to be serviced by someone who radiates happiness. Couldn’t fault the service at all. The food took a long time to arrive but it was very tasty and nice quality. I would definitely return.

Below Par Sunday Lunch. I had a stroll around Witney looking for some lunch. There were several to choose from and I chose this place. On reflection I should have opted for The Fleece. The staff were friendly enough. I went to the beer garden but left shortly afterwards due to it being too rowdy. I ordered the lamb meal. It arrived ten minutes later with no mint sauce even though I requested it. The lamb was tough and quite thinly sliced. Just two pieces was all I was served. The roasties were dry and uninviting. One piece of cauliflower and a spoonful of carrots and peas. The gravy was rich and saved the day. There were several deserts and I chose the sticky toffee pudding and ice cream. It arrived five minutes later. Looked like it had been taken from a tin and microwaved. The ice cream was tasteless. I had a table in a quiet corner of the pub. Sounds from the bar were welcomed. Overall I was underwhelmed and won’t return.

Lovely Sunday pub dinner. Stumbled across this place as one of the very few open for food past 4pm on a Sunday and very glad we did! Lovely food, good portions (couldn’t finish dessert!) and Jack the barman / waiter was fab, very friendly and happy. Our dog Maggie was also very welcomed and given some treats, the whole experience was great!

Firstly I’ll start by saying the pub interior itself is nice, as is the tabled area out the front. There is a good selection of beers on tap. We didn’t stay for food so I can’t comment. The reason we walked to the pub is because we have a dog and it markets itself as dog friendly. The reason I’m writing this review though is because the garden out the back is an absolute disgrace. It is overgrown and absolutely covered in dog poo (hundreds of it everywhere - so much so my dog was overwhelmed and left cowering in the corner). This is meant to be a dog friendly pub - dog friendly doesn’t just mean you are happy to have dogs on the premises. It should mean that you take pride in providing a safe haven for dogs and this is absolutely shocking. You can tell a lot about the owners of a pub when they allow this sort of thing to happen and can’t be arsed to sort it out. This could be, this should be a nice pub. We won’t be coming back any time soon.

Best avoided, unless you want to wait a long time for very mediocre food. Wish we had checked reviews before booking, as it seems to be an ongoing situation. A simple starter took an hour to arrive & another 30 mins wait for the the main course! To add insult to injury, halfway through eating our delayed starter (chosen from the Evening Set Menu given to us) one of the staff claimed that they were unable to get the till to accept the two courses for £16 offer, so we would be charged full price! We also watched one party actually putting on their coats to leave, having waited an hour and a half for their meal, which only then materialised! Unbelievable incompetence!

We were so disappointed after eating here for the first time since the new owners took over. The food looks so good on their site and we love to support new local businesses. We booked the table but nothing was ready for us on arrival, in fact we were really embarrassed as the staff were asking customers to finish their drinks in the bar so they could get the table ready. After some time we were finally seated and our orders were taken and after one hour fifteen minutes we were still waiting. We had to ask if there was a problem in the kitchen and was told there was a delay! We nearly left to walk out after another fifteen minutes had passed when the meals finally arrived. They were OK although we all thought the carrot batons tasted off. So all in all not a pleasant experience so won't be returning.

My partner and I hadn't been before today and based on the experience, we wouldn't return. I ordered the Louisiana burger (vegetarian) which comes with chips. My partner ordered the mixed grill. The burger was mediocre at best, essentially a fried tasteless patty in a bun with a minuscule amount of Asian slaw in the bottom, the chips were ok. My partners meal was really pretty small and for £18.50, we didn't think reasonable. The gammon wasn't cooked (rare), and we had to ask for a new piece to be cooked (they asked if he wanted a new plate of food but we said just the gammon would be fine), it took longer than anticipated (well over 15 minutes). He said the food was ok overall. Given we ordered food when it was quiet in the restaurant I'm not sure why the food was rushed (hence the undercooked meat) and then took a pretty long time for a piece of meat to come back out. Overall pretty disappointing!

Just left the Angel. I would have to say it was one of the poorest pub meals I have ever had. We had to wait over 50 minutes for scampi, fish, gammon and kids pizza and chips. We decided to go for “safe” options as never been before. How it is takes this long for these meals to be served I don’t know. After the wait we were hoping that at least the food would be good. However the food did not come out at the same time. We had to ask for my daughter’s food to come out as we already had the rest. The food was below par, gammon was oily, the egg with it, over done, the fish batter was awful and the portion small. The children’s pizza had obviously been sitting for sometime under a heat lamp and chips were all greasy. It was very disappointing. We won’t be returning. If I could put no stars I would. It is shame, as two girls behind the bar were very nice and were trying their best.

We booked a table for a New Years Day meal with friends, 9 of us in total including children. Upon arrival we stood waiting for almost 10 minutes at the bar, it was not busy, there were only a handful of customers. When our friends arrived we gave up waiting and went through to the restaurant, sitting down at the only table available. There had clearly been a New Years event the previous evening, the tables had not been put back in place and there was a pile of balloons and decorations dumped over a stack of chairs, half of the restaurant was bare and the floor was still dirty. We were not presented with a restaurant ready to serve meals on New Years Day. We sat down at the only table available, it was not dressed or arranged in anyway ready for a usual service, let alone New Years Day. Had it have been any other day we’d have left, gone elsewhere or cooked at home. With no other option we ordered from the menu. Again, there were no specials, roasts or anything fitting of a New Years Day dinner. When ordering we enquired about the 3 versions of sausage and mash that was on the menu, the children’s, the light bite and the normal menu. We were informed they were all different sizes, so opted for the middle one for our son. Our friends ordered the children’s version. We waited almost 1 1/2 hours for our food to arrive. We were the only table in the restaurant eating at this time, there was no need for this or communication from the kitchen. The arrival of our food was shocking, presentation was lacklustre, the fried egg on the mixed grill looked as though it had been fried a day earlier and reheated, however, more shocking was the time scale between plates. By the time two of our dishes arrived, some of the party had finished eating. There was no explanation for this from the kitchen. I did enquire with the waiter about the sizes of the portions of the sausage and mash, as the children’s portion that had been served looked larger than the small adult portion that we had ordered, with both being served on the same plate. The waiter went to the kitchen and then returned telling us they were different sausages. We didn’t stay for dessert, which again was disappointing, but we felt no need to prolong our disappointment. The Angel should not have been open for service. They clearly had no intention of providing a service fitting of New Years Day and couldn’t manage the basics of reassembling the dining room. We won’t be returning, unless management changes anyway.

My family had the misfortune of having booked a table for five for Christmas Day at The Angel. Arriving at 1.15pm for a 1.30pm booking, we were shown to our table. Drinks orders were swiftly taken and we settled in to wait for our starters. Given that we had been requested to confirm our menu choices prior to the day, I expected service to be timely and efficient. After a wait of twenty five minutes our Prawn Cocktails were served. A shallow bowl of shredded lettuce with approx half a dozen prawns on top, a thin drizzle of sauce and two thin slices of bread with no butter. Not great, but at least edible. While eating our starters, some developments taking place around us were causing me alarm. Other guests were complaining about cold main courses, last minute changes to the table layouts were being made (with diners helping to shift the furniture about, no less) and other parties of people booked in after us beginning to arrive in the bar area, only to be informed that service was running late and that there would be a delay. Then began the extended wait for our mains. A large party of diners had obviously had enough of waiting for their desserts and they departed carrying some take away boxes containing their final course with them. A couple who had already sent back their main courses seemed to struggle to eat their desserts and then struggled to firstly negotiate a discount from their bill in recompense and then spent more time waiting to finally pay and leave. Approximately one hour and fifty minutes after the starters were served, the mains finally arrived. What a disappointment. The plates were hot, but the food had obviously been sitting around for some time. One albeit thick slice of turkey which was hard around the edges, potatoes and parsnips you could hardly push a knife through, a small portion of Red Cabbage and some very sorry looking carrots. The Yorkshire Pudding had been prepared in advance by a certain Aunt whose produce can often be found in supermarkets and certainly were not fresh. Add to that a small ball of stuffing and a single Pig in a Blanket. I ate mine, out of hunger as I’d had nothing else, but most of our party couldn’t eat it. Without doubt the worst roast dinner I’ve ever had. At this point I observed a family walk through from the bar, the Father carrying bags of crisps for his children. They had waited enough and decided to call it quits, had their deposits refunded and were finishing their drinks before leaving. How I wish I had called a halt to our experience in a similar manner. As we waited for the plates to be cleared away, we decided that we were not going to waste anymore time… I told the waiter that we no longer wanted our desserts and I asked him for the bill, telling him that I wanted a minimum of 30% removed from it… We were presented with a bill which had just had the cost of the desserts removed. (£5 each from a total charge per head of £85…!!) I reaffirmed my 30% discount request, to which he said that he would fetch the manager, who eventually appeared dressed in his casual loungewear and carpet slippers…!!! He asked me what the problem was and I was almost lost for words. Exactly what he was doing while his front-of-house team were trying to cope with the situation, I don’t know, as this was the first we had seen of him. I received no apology and no explanation as to what problems they had been experiencing and it’s very hard to have any sympathy or understanding for the staff in the complete absence of information. In the end we left having had the cost of two heads removed from the bill. I wish I had argued further but in the end we just wanted to get out and go home. I’ll certainly never set foot in there again. Christmas Day, ruined.

Christmas Day…. Well what can I say…. What should have been a memorable occasion was but for all the wrong reasons. Let me start with a positive, the only positive was young Jack; an absolute credit to himself and if I were this lads parents I would be extremely proud. His persistence in being unapologetically upbeat and sincere is what deserves recognition. The food, the timings, the organisation was absolutely awful yet somehow young Jack managed to make things better with his upbeat and positive attitude. The management, well all I can say is cowards who hid all afternoon and despite every single table having complaint and rightly so didn’t have any brains to realise they had completely failed and do the right thing and to come out and take ownership and offer their apologies instead hid behind their front of house staff and not even offer a GOGW for what was an absurd price of £85 per person. It was frankly awful and what made it worse was the way the management failed to acknowledge and hid away from their shambolic planning and delivery - honestly if you last 3 months morning charge I’ll be surprised! The arrogance to even present the bill in full was beyond belief. Jack showed far more empathy, determination and willingness to turn around this mockery than the two ‘landlords’ whose showing was nothing more than cowardly and pathetic!

After waiting for the place to reopen and the incredible photos that were posted on their socials I can only feel let down. Whilst the interior does look like this unfortunately the food is not great and massively overpriced for the quality and quantity. I visited this restaurant today for Sunday lunch. We had a few small plates to share, the pork belly bites were amazing but the scotch egg wasn't cooked though, and while the egg was lovely and soft, the sausage meat was still pink in the middle. I had the lamb shank roast, and the meat was really delicious, however, the "buttered greens" were actually boiled green beans and carrots, but in the plus side there was some nice red cabbage. Now before I type this I will just say that this roast cost me £18.50... the Yorkshire, which I paid extra for was frozen, and not good frozen, supermarket own frozen, and the potatoes were frozen too. I was so very disappointed. I had sticky toffee pud for dessert, which was oddly grainy and unpleasant, others had the crumble which was good. I wouldn't recommend.

Visited here with a friend following the reopening after getting new owners. The positive is that the place looks great, a huge improvement from how the pub was before and it really does look good inside. However the food is so expensive and not great quality. We ordered a club sandwich which was £11.50, expecting for that price we'd get chips or something to accompany it. What we got was a chicken sandwich with limited salad in on cheap sliced white bread. Nothing else for £11.50!!The sandwich was completely average and I genuinely can't believe the person in charge of pricing thinks this is fair. You can't help but feel ripped off.We did raise this with the staff who just said they have no control over pricing and would pass on to the company. There is a lot of competition with quite a few nice pubs in Kelvedon, Feering and Coggeshall that charge a lot less for bigger portions and better quality food so unfortunately unless the menu is improved, the quality of the food improved and the pricing addressed (wouldn't be so bad if the first two were addressed) this pub will be a one visit pub as it is for us as there are many better options in the area and there is nothing so special about this pub that warrants paying a main course price for 2 slices of cheap bread with hardly any filling!

I met a friend here for lunch, we viewed the menu and nothing really jumped out at us, so we ordered sandwiches from the special board, the bread was tiger bread but it was quite hard, not fresh. When we came to pay we were both very shocked at the price that was charged for a pint of black currant juice and water, £1.50!!! I felt this was very expensive and was not a realistic price, £1.50 for basically 25mls of cordial and tap water, a bottle from cash and carry or the local is only £1 say? When I queried the bill, the response was ‘I don’t set the pricing!’ Reminder very much of the new TalkTalk advert!

Just before this lockdown, I went for my meal a little nervous as a first meal out after having had to shield - I need not have worried all well organized and COVID-19 guidelines well in place. wipeable menu and track and trace and specific instructions to be followed at the Angel, and seating well apart. I was made to feel at ease with friendly efficient staff all looked very clean and I could see the staff following procedures. I had a prawn cocktail with lovely warm bread followed by beef bourguignon - which was delicious and finished off with a to die for - "Chocolate and cherry pot" Would be good if the dessert was garnished with a cherry rather than a Strawberry - but that didn't stop it being delicious. I was not rushed nor did I wait a long time it was indeed a perfect night and great grub.

Being new to the area I had high hopes for this pub, thinking it could be a regular local for my family and our dog, but with the constant uncalled for sass from the bar staff, and the outdated interiors I don’t think my husband and I will be back. This place was really difficult to figure out.. they offer a gastro-pub priced menu and espresso martini’s, but don’t offer early grey tea or any vegan alternatives? And to be perfectly frank the food quality and service unfortunately just isn’t quite there to justify the prices charged. I really felt at a vital time when the hospitality industry is at crisis point establishments such as these would be doing their upmost to retain new trade, however the pub and staff seemed more focused on its antiquated system of having their local tradesman nurse a single pint for 5 hours, than their new customers spending £80+ ! Now permanently working from home and no longer commuting, I really was looking forward to having a few regular nights out a week here happily spending some of my surplus of disposable income and supporting local businesses in the village, but after my recent experience I’m not gonna venture back here. Instead I’ll be heading down to the Valero Lounge in Witham where they are always welcomingly non-judgmental and friendly :)

First time at the Angel and were in aware of the 20% off over which was a bonus and made the pub quite busyDisappointed that for a vegetarian the menu had one choice a curry although were told there was a quiche . The curry was ok but did lack flavour which was a shame and think in general there should be more options available

We had dinner in the garden during the Eat Out To Help Out scheme. The food was nice and the menu had some different choices on it, but what we chose wasn't really anything special. The one way system and all the usual post-covid procedures were good, apart from you had to open the gate into the garden by hand, and there wasn't any hand gel in the area so luckily we had some with us.

Friendly staff and good choice on the menu. Nice to eat outside, but I wouldn't eat inside here as staff not wearing masks. If they wore masks it would be a much safer place to eat, and I would return.

First restaurant visit post lock down and it was nice to be in a warm and friendly atmosphere again. The fish and chips was lovely and the sticky toffee pudding was delicious. The restaurant is well spaced out, with hand sanitiser and perspex screens up at the bar, would definately recommend!!

This was my first venture out after lockdown and it couldn’t have been any better. I went for dinner with a friend, the tables were spaced well and the atmosphere was warm, welcoming and relaxed. I had the lamb rump which was cooked perfectly, and was recommended the sticky toffee pudding...I love a dessert and it did not disappoint!Looking forward to my next visit.

Life after lockdown felt a lot more normal after a trip to the pub for lunch. Lovely food I didn’t cook, crab salad and fish n chips, fresh and beautifully presented with beer from the tap. Grateful for the little things. All the new measures like entrance and exit, sanitiser, bar screen not invasive. Just a joy. Thank you for making it so easy. Nb no cash, all card.

Went to the pub for lunch yesterday. Pleased to see that all the necessary measures were in place so felt really comfortable. There were a few people eating and in the bar but it didn't feel overly crowded. Everyone was respectful of the new rules which was really good to see. New lunch menu looks fab and what I chose was delicious. Really didn't feel very different to before the lock down. Will definitely be going back.

Lunched here with friends, one of whom is such a picky and demanding eater thathe can at times be an embarassment! It is a testement to this place that even he could fing nocause for compaint. We (six of us) chose widely from the menu and were all satisfied with both the portion sizes and the quality and presentation. We will certainly use The Angel again, even though it is quite drive for two of us. Thank you.

Lovely looking pub with a nice feel to it and really good staff, but unfortunately some of the food was disappointing. Starters were good as was the burger but two of us had the Madras from the specials board. It was really mild, a small portion and stone cold around the edges, which I guess was from sitting waiting for our other dishes to be ready. The sorbet was good but the cheesecake served in a tall glass was awkward to eat.The price of the food was good and with so many good reviews we might give it another go.

We had been in Sussex and were journeying home, and needed a stop off place to eat, that catered for vegans. I wasn't disappointed! Staff friendly, went to kitchen to check on the soup of the day to confirm suitable! 2 of us only wanted the soup (starter) whilst the 3rd wanted a burger. We also asked for sharing breads too. Everything was brought out as once as requested so we could all eat at the same time. Lovely breads, all served warm. Soup was delicious! Broccoli, courgette and pea. Would definitely recommend! So much so, that my brother and sister in law are planning a return visit soon as less than an hour away!

Four of us had lunch here and have to say it was very nice. Home made pate for starters and a fish pie for main followed by sticky toffee pudding. Each course nice. Service was very good and all staff were friendly and welcoming. Just needed a little background music maybe to help ambiance. Overall though I would recommend this pub and restaurant. Cost was about £130 for 4 with drinks and coffees.

Had dinner here last night nice welcome from lady server. Presented with special boards and talked through them. Opted for main menu all good re starters and mains. Attentive service throughout. Only comment was that dessert (crumble) was red hot. Obviously microwaved which is fine as didn't affect taste(would just suggest a minute or two less as it was still steaming after about 10 minutes. But wouldnt stop me going again As said before very pleasant friendly service

Food was amazing and highly recommend the Camembert and Burger. Food could appear overpriced but the quality is excellent and large portion sizes.Staff were friendly and a cozy atmosphere with an excellent choice of drinks especially ales. In our opinion could of with a bit of a facelift in the restaurant and the furniture is basic but doesn’t detract from our experience of the pub and would highly recommend. We will be back :)

This year I booked our Xmas party at The Angel in Kelvedon and we were not disappointed! There was just under 30 of us and we had the restaurant area to ourselves. This included a 3 course meal which we pre-ordered and had arrival drinks ready for when everyone arrived. I took in table decs and the team set this up perfectly for me! The night flowed and everyone loved it! The night ended up with many of us taking part in Karaoke which was taking place the bar side. A great hit! If you want a lovely meal then head here or even better if organising a party for work, personal - book it! Thanks guy and see you again soon!!

Visited the angel after a nice day at the local zoo, was passing on the way home. The retsaurant was tidy and clean but the service was very up and down, plus the lady who served us was moaning about other staff members very near to us, which was awkward. The food was nice but overall compared to other places of the same kind I think that its very overpriced. The drinks are london prices and you dont expect that in a village pub.

This was a second visit, 18 months after the 1st visit when our jointly chosen fish and chips was absolutely fabulous. Today we both chose carrot and coriander soup which was piping hot and very delicious. Our mains were fish and chips again for one, and duck with braized red cabbage and mash with seasonal veg. My duck was disappointingly very tough and overdone, but the rest was very tasty. The fish and chips, though enjoyed, was not a patch on that of our earlier visit, and the fish a much smaller portion. The waiter expressed his apologies about my duck, and did offer for the chef to prepare another portion. However, we wanted to enjoy eating our main courses at the same time so thanked the staff for the offer but declined. On presentation of the bill, we were told that my main course charge had been removed, and again sincere apologies were offered. Obviously, its always disappointing when things aren't right, but the lovely staff here dealt with it very well, and seemed very genuine in their apologies and in their offer of a replacement was appreciated. So top marks for managing a complaint well.

We were a three generation family group of seven adults and three young children on a busy Friday night. We were in the area due to our son's wedding the next day and had gathered from different parts of the country and the continent. It was, then, a special occasion for us. The food was lovely but very important to us was the wonderful service with special attention to the children, despite how busy it was. From the time of phoning to book ('you'll be needing a highchair then') to the time we left we were really well looked after. The children were tired from travelling a distance and were given their meals as soon as they were ready so that they didn't need to wait for the rest of us. That this child friendly service happened without in any sense this being a 'kiddie' type restaurant was lovely. We had not long left when we received a phone call to say that we had left important information for the wedding on the table and we were able to go back to get it. We are very grateful to the staff for all they did for us and would happily recommend the restaurant to others.

Yesterday was the second time I had lunch at The Angel with a large group of ladies and once again the food and service was excellent. The pub looked very inviting and we received a warm welcome from the bar staff. There was a good range of choices on the menu and the Specials board and we did not have to wait long for our orders to be taken. Given the number of people in our group and that the meals were all home cooked, we were served efficiently by very friendly staff. The food was delicious. I was impressed by the fact that they had a system in place for groups who want to pay individually for their meals and drinks. This made it so much it so much easier when it came to paying the bill.
