We've just had an excellent carvery meal here. The beef was excellent, the turkey moist and tasty and the gammon (slow-cooked for 14 hours) was exceptional. This was served with really tasty, well cooked veggies. Compliments to the chef and the team. Yum.

It can be hard to find a table for a family of five near Tintern, especially on a bank holiday, but the Anchor has lots of space including many tables outdoors. The food is good, service was friendly despite the rush earlier that day and the environment is hard to beat. Abbey meters away, play area and open pitch for the kids. It may be big, and near a tourist attraction but it is reliably good.

There’s a reason this place is always fully booked on a Sunday - the carvery’s are absolutely amazing! Definitely get your moneys worth and there’s 3 meat options. This is my third time going and I can’t recommend it enough- just make sure to book a table well in advance.

Although we had pre booked our meals and reserved a table long in advance, the service was horrific! It was a wait to be seated with missing chairs and a 40+ minute wait for our food to be served with a timer that didn’t work; leaving the carvery choices to mistime their meals with the pre booked choices! This doesn’t go well with 4 babies/toddlers/children at the table after a long walk to get there and the adults that are also gasping. The servers did their job but at a bare minimum, I appreciate it was busy but from the other reviews I take it that this is a regular occurrence at the Anchor! This shouldn’t have been so hard. There were no apologies or compensation and one even said “don’t ask me any questions”-after being told about the wait, we weren’t laughing. The food itself was meh- basic and super overpriced, leading to this place being considered a tourist trap. The carvery was basic, good meat but heat lamped veg with sad potatoes and a ridiculous, chaotic wait in a poor location of one of the dining rooms!! One of our party was left waiting for ages to be served as the carvery staff prioritised a dog having prime meat from the joint which is disgusting and rude. You can’t charge these prices when a Wetherspoons offers a better experience. We had to fetch our own drinks, chairs and (empty) sauces, wait nearly an hour in total to be seated and served for the joy of spending £500 and leaving disappointed. Oh, and our plates and glasses wouldn’t be cleared so we had to fill a neighbouring table with our empties to avoid a full, dirty table. As a party of 16 with a love for spending on food and drink, we could have stayed way longer, spending way more but we couldn’t wait to leave and go elsewhere.

After visiting the Abbey, we decided to have dinner in the pub next door. We sat in the corner which gave us a nice view of the green. My friend who is gluten intolerant, had the fish and chips and said the batter was crispy and delicious, she thoroughly enjoyed her meal. I had a chicken burger which was very enjoyable and hot the right spot. We decided to both have an apple and plum crumble, this was gluten free which my friend enjoyed, I just thought it was ok. I have given a starring of four, as it was slightly let down by the staff. My friends drink when delivered, it was just dumped on the table and nothing said and looked very miserable..... My friend also said she just walked off whilst taking her order. The food is good, so I would definitely recommend

Large amounts of seating, we arrived not lonjg after opening so had pick of the tables. However, even on a Tuesday by teh time we left there were only a few tables left, so if going for food, I would suggest booking. We re-visited with friends and once again had an excellent carvery meal. The staff were very accommodating. Our friends brought with them their large well behaved Alsatian dog who in fact was one of a number of dogs in the restaurant at the time. Clearly this place is popular with visitors and tourists alike and I can imagine it being busy during the summer months and holiday periods. The Anchor Inn is situated in an idyllic spot close to the old ruined Cistercian Abbey and with the River Wye running close by it. There is car parking on hand and if one is eating in the pub keep the ticket and you will be refunded. All in all well worth a stop and stretch of legs if one is passing through the Wye Valley. If you have young children with you there is a large sports field right outside the pub and over the far side of this sports field there is a play park for infants, Parental supervision is required of course.......

Ordered a chicken panini with a side of skin on fries which wasn't on the menu but staff agreed to cook, and the curry. Was informed of a 40 minute wait despite the pub being far from full. Enjoyed the garden setting however the food, when it arrived was below average. The chicken panini my wife ordered was nice but the skin on fries were cold and the curry was bland. Staff leaving doo. Table of 10 of us. Located in a small village about 10 minutes from Chepstow. I had the Anchor Burger. Wasn’t anything special, standard pub grub nothing took me by surprise, other than the price, certainly not a £18.odd burger. Perhaps correct pricing for the slightly affluent area, but unfortunately not an affluent quality. Skin on fries? More like over cooked french fries. Portions not reflecting price either. Other members of the party enjoyed their meals, however others who had the burger also mentioned about quality and price. Menu advertised online was different to the restaurant which led to a few of the party being disappointed in not having a dessert as advertised online. I’ve never experienced that before. Would be a great place come summer with the Abbey a stone throw away. Service was good and didn’t have to wait long, however considering a big party we were not informed of how to order food so had to ask ourselves. Attended later in evening so no issues parking. Can imagine it being a nightmare when weather goes up 10°. Overall the meal was a solid 6. Would I return, possibly, but only as an invitee and certainly wouldn’t rush back voluntarily.

Booked at the last minute for a Sunday roast. Plentiful staff were helpful and good natured. Really pleased to see a carvery which included small plate option, but roast option and “trimmings” only option. Also plenty of other alternatives on the menu. We opted for nut roast and trimmings. The choice of veg wasn’t as extensive as some but it was cooked very nicely. Red cabbage, roast carrot and parsnips, broccoli, cauliflower cheese (a point of contention but why does this get served with a roast???). Yorkshires were lovely, stuffing was better than average and nut roast was nice. Also ordered steamed choc pud which was disappointing. Definitely as described, but not very chocolatey and the choc sauce was the horrible choc syrup stuff that goes on cheap ice creams. I’d hoped for a warm custardy choc sauce. Woukd choose a different pud another time.

Visited on a fairly busy day. Waited 40 mins for food which was communicated to us on ordering at the bar so no problem there The fish was good. Crisp batter and tasty. The burger was not so good. The patty was dry and dense. The bacon was so overdone that it flaked apart. The bun wasn't toasted so the bread was really soggy from the sauce and the onion rings were saturated with oil and were tough and very overcooked. Our party of four all had chips which were luke warm and dry. They tasted like an old batch and we all left them. For £18.50 for a burger and fries this was very poor.

Sited next to the start/end point of a Devils Pulpit walk, we attended as a party of 4, with 4 dogs and seated quickly. 3 of the party where vegetarian, meaning they had to wait for their nutt roast as the queue grew in length for the carvery. Fortunately I gave up waiting for them to get their food so joined the queue. Fortunate because when their food came, after a talk with the wait staff, they could nip on ahead to the trimmings. This needs to be explained better, had I waited they'd have finished before I had my meal. The food it's self was lacking, dry beef, ham was moist and salty. The roast potatoes where abysmal, pretty sure they had not been par boiled, rock solid crust and barley cooked in the middle. The Yorkshire had a well oil in it, not pleasant, the US will start marking a claim soon. The broccoli was fantastic, just how I like it, gravy, whislt okay, didn't taste like they'd taken advantage of the cooking juices. The staff where accomadating and professional, even with the lack of clarity on the nut roast, no qualms there. They managed a massively busy period extremely well. Its often the staff that hold up some establishments, I hope the owners realise the asset they have in them. Overall, I won't be going back, one time thing, reasonable in price, but I'd rather pay more and get quality. On the quality/cost line, I'd say its under, paying too much for lacking quality.

But the reason for the low review was what looked like dried poo stains littering the bathroom stalls please if you’re eating look away from the photos because it’s not a nice sight. Lovely food, my Caesar salad was delicious, my husband had the gammon steak and loved the addition of the fresh pineapple. It was busy (Saturday lunchtime) but we didn’t have to wait too long for food. Overall very enjoyable and we can recommend.

Have eaten here before but find the standards drop off Nacho with no sour cream, over cooked so all cheese burnt at bottom and no peppers as described, the salsa sauce was a thin artificial bright red liquid something, but not salsa. Main was flavorless, luke warm and looked like it was from the bottom of the pan, salad consisted of just green lettuce leaves no cucumber, tomatoes, peppers etc. This is a pub that's busier in the day, maybe running out of certain items in the evening, that's OK but tell the customers. The locals will be about in times when tourists arnt

Good food and drink selection as always. Lovely area of the world facing the historic Tintern Abbey. The 5 pound parking fee can be deducted from your food or drink order here.

Service was quick and they were able to accommodate my order even though I hadn't booked, I was willing to sit outside. The food was ok but it most definitely wasn't worth the mortgage you need to pay for it.

Lovely place, my husband & I always went to Caffe Nero in Newport until it closed. We loved their coffee. Have to make do with any coffee now until we go to Abergavenny then we'll go to our favourite coffee place

Came here in June and it was a thriving pub. Rang w days before our current trip and everything appeared to be OK. But on arrival, and popping in for an evening drink, we were told the pub was shut as "the Brewery have sold it". No apology. Probably explains why as we walked in, two guys were raiding the place of its contents. What is it with this place? It used to be run by a lovely couple, strict rules but always welcoming and accommodating. Since then it has bumped from one crisis to another. So unpredictable. With the caravan site just around the corner, it should do sufficient business to get through the quieter winter months. Even the locals now boycott it apparently as you never know if it is open. Please, someone, grab hold of it, know how to run a business and get it back on it's feet.

We had our wedding reception here, they were so accommodating even though we didn't give them much notice at all. It was smooth from start to finish! They were absolutely spot on with the food service, there was 30 of us and the food service was super fast and no mistakes made and it all came out piping hot. The portion sizes were fantastic and we were all impressed with our meals. The wedding room was dressed so beautifully for us, so much effort went into it and it definitely shown. Again with hardly any notice they pulled it out the bag! Thank you so much Carl, Karen and staff at the Glascoed 😊
