As a nostalgic nod to previous hiking trips with buddies past we decided to abandon Symonds Yat for the day and travel to Tintern to take in the Wye Valley Greenway and “earn” a pub lunch to boot. Familiar tactic to tire the dogs so they were well behaved in yet another dog/vegan-friendly hostelry. We parked up mid-morning in The Anchor car park which vies with the Abbey car park nearby for passing traffic. There’s a £5 all day charge which, conveniently for us at least, is refunded against your expenditure in the pub. We chose to walk across the old rail bridge then on the WVG all the way to the, closed in Winter (October to April), rail tunnel which, when open, allows you to yomp all the way to Chepstow. Took a few snaps (excuse the pun) of the crafted crocodile, made of old sleepers and rail joints, then retraced our steps to the Anchor. The pub has the air of a large chain pub; which is not a criticism merely an observation. We plonked ourselves in the Cider Mill Bar which has, as its centrepiece, an old hand pushed apple press. Once again, due to the timing of our visit in a chilly Welsh January, the pub was far from full. The Cider Mill section was ideal for us post-amble with large wooden booths, flagstone floors and its own bar. The dogs got themselves comfortable than I took to the bar, was warmly welcomed then ordered a, now familiar, pint of Wye Valley Butty Bach and a HPA for MrsC. Good vegan choices but we both settled on the bargain that was a hefty jacket spud with a generous topping of 3 bean chilli; a snip in these straitened times and with the refund of the parking fee a spud and a pint came in at a tad over a £10/head. A warm and welcoming hug after a frosty promenade along the old railway track. Service was warm, the atmosphere convivial and the food generous. I’m sure it’s a different picture in the height of a tourist summer but it was a welcome haven after a hearty tramp and fitted the bill perfectly for dog-owning, vegan hikers (they even had Doom Bar zero on draught) Great set-up for its location and seems to have honed its offering to align with the mix of customers they want/need to attract. Tidy

My partner and I popped in after a walk around the area with our dog Harvey. I had a food intolerance and the staff were really helpful, the chef talked me through the menu and ended up cooking me an alternative meal. Everyone went out of their way to make me feel welcome when I often just feel a bit difficult. The chef even gave Harvey some turkey. We had a wonderful time and great food, would definitely go again.

Visited on a fairly busy day. Waited 40 mins for food which was communicated to us on ordering at the bar so no problem there The fish was good. Crisp batter and tasty. The burger was not so good. The patty was dry and dense. The bacon was so overdone that it flaked apart. The bun wasn't toasted so the bread was really soggy from the sauce and the onion rings were saturated with oil and were tough and very overcooked. Our party of four all had chips which were luke warm and dry. They tasted like an old batch and we all left them. For £18.50 for a burger and fries this was very poor.

Sited next to the start/end point of a Devils Pulpit walk, we attended as a party of 4, with 4 dogs and seated quickly. 3 of the party where vegetarian, meaning they had to wait for their nutt roast as the queue grew in length for the carvery. Fortunately I gave up waiting for them to get their food so joined the queue. Fortunate because when their food came, after a talk with the wait staff, they could nip on ahead to the trimmings. This needs to be explained better, had I waited they'd have finished before I had my meal. The food it's self was lacking, dry beef, ham was moist and salty. The roast potatoes where abysmal, pretty sure they had not been par boiled, rock solid crust and barley cooked in the middle. The Yorkshire had a well oil in it, not pleasant, the US will start marking a claim soon. The broccoli was fantastic, just how I like it, gravy, whislt okay, didn't taste like they'd taken advantage of the cooking juices. The staff where accomadating and professional, even with the lack of clarity on the nut roast, no qualms there. They managed a massively busy period extremely well. Its often the staff that hold up some establishments, I hope the owners realise the asset they have in them. Overall, I won't be going back, one time thing, reasonable in price, but I'd rather pay more and get quality. On the quality/cost line, I'd say its under, paying too much for lacking quality.

Family meal. Food was average I think we were quite late and not many people were there so may have had an effect on the food. The staff were nice in fairness. But it was bar service so you don’t get much time with the serving staff considering the prices. But the reason for the low review was what looked like dried poo stains littering the bathroom stalls please if you’re eating look away from the photos because it’s not a nice sight. Maybe they don’t have a manager checking often enough on this shift or we just caught them at the wrong time but I don’t really see a situation where I can honestly put any higher than a 1 with such a big underlying hygiene issue

Stayed here in our motorhome on a Saturday evening in August. Paid to park during the late afternoon/evening in the main car park near the entrance/welcome centre for Tintern abbey in one of the coach spaces. Great dinner in the pub (claimed back the £5 parking we’d paid), then moved our motorhome into the main tarmac car park in the evening next to the pub itself (as the landlady had recommended). Really quiet night - had breakfast in the café over the road next to the public toilets - open v early.

Have eaten here before but find the standards drop off Nacho with no sour cream, over cooked so all cheese burnt at bottom and no peppers as described, the salsa sauce was a thin artificial bright red liquid something, but not salsa. Main was flavorless, luke warm and looked like it was from the bottom of the pan, salad consisted of just green lettuce leaves no cucumber, tomatoes, peppers etc. This is a pub that's busier in the day, maybe running out of certain items in the evening, that's OK but tell the customers. The locals will be about in times when tourists arnt

My daughter booked a family party for a large group as unbeknown to me she was announcing the fact i was going to be a grandad - again - early next year The venue was so noisy thanks to the place being nothing but hard surface with no soft furnishings i couldn’t hear a word anyone said from my seat at the end of the table. The service was chaotic. Some if our meals arrived but there was no sign of the others thirty minutes later. Enquiries were met with a strange response that because my son in law’s mum and I had split the table order across two tickets they were dealt with separately hence the delay. Which is a bit hard to believe was the cause of this delay as they brought some of the orders on my ticket and one of the orders on the other then went off to serve others for 30 minutes. They make a BIG thing about how you have to pay for the car park and they refund it, but in reality there is no charge after 6pm which probably explains why on arrival at 6:30 we had to fight our way through what must have been the Wye Valley Motor Caravanning Club to park. Apparently my daughter likes the place because it’s where she and her other half went for their first meal out and where he took her back to propose but i’m not impresed

Not much to say other than the food was pretty terrible. The nachos had no sour cream and were plastered with hard chedder and syrupy salsa. When we asked if there was an alternative we could purchase for sour cream, we were told there wasn't any, but that we could have mayo? Additionally, the pizzas didn't feel remotely 'hand stretched' as advertised, they tasted more freezer bought, very thick, doughy and sparse toppings. The hunter chicken went down well though, so maybe go for that if you visit.

The Anchor is so much you do not expect of a pub right up close to a major tourist attraction. You pay £5 to park all day in the car park with the promise of your money back when you spend in the pub. This gives the opportunity of a long walk, a visit to the Abbey and a guaranteed return to the pub. we did all of this and were rewarded with a late lunch in atmospheric surroundings with lovely views of the Abbey and the Wye Valley. There is also a large beer garden and a garden room cafe if you are not a pub fan. The food choice is good with all the traditional dishes you would expect to find on a pub menu plus excellent seasonal, vegetarian options. My friend had the leek tart with new potatoes and salad and I had the chickpea salad, topped with char-grilled cherry tomatoes. Both were exceptionally good. Staff were helpful and when it came to paying asked if we had a voucher. All credit to the Anchor for providing an outstanding welcome to visitors in the Wye Valley. Met a friend for lunch with my partner and 2 year old grandson. Lovely food, many gluten free options, which was great! I had gammon, egg, chips and peas. Gammon was huge! Could only eat half, all freshly cooked and hot. Friend had a naked burger, which she enjoyed. My partner tried some beef loaded fries, they weren't what he was expecting (don't know what he thought they were, lol!?), but enjoyed them. My grandson slept thru lunch, so he just had a drink. Not many staff on, but the lady serving was friendly, helpful and didn't forget us. Nice atmosphere, great pub food, clean toilets, free car park.

Came here in June and it was a thriving pub. Rang w days before our current trip and everything appeared to be OK. But on arrival, and popping in for an evening drink, we were told the pub was shut as "the Brewery have sold it". No apology. Probably explains why as we walked in, two guys were raiding the place of its contents. What is it with this place? It used to be run by a lovely couple, strict rules but always welcoming and accommodating. Since then it has bumped from one crisis to another. So unpredictable. With the caravan site just around the corner, it should do sufficient business to get through the quieter winter months. Even the locals now boycott it apparently as you never know if it is open. Please, someone, grab hold of it, know how to run a business and get it back on it's feet.

Have been using the cold tub and hot sauna with friends for months now. Very beneficial for health, good for de stressing, a real feel good factor, especially after a fab hot chocolate by the fire in the pub!

Staff were rude 😒 😤 and unhelpful. They were more concerned about daily gossip.
