Highly recommend This place is a must go. From the second we arrived we were greeted with a warm welcome and quickly we didn't hang around waiting for someone to serve us, I had the steak pie and it really is outstanding by far THE best steak pie you will ever have. The staff went above and beyond to give us the best experience, Atmosphere was amazing. The food was outstanding, Also recommend the lemon 🍋 meringue profiteroles. 5 stars 🌟 all round. Thank you, We are looking forwards to our next visit. Xxx

My wife and I are regular customers of the Anchor Inn and have never had a bad meal until today. We recommend the pub and often visit with friends. Today we went for the brunch, and I sorry to say the pancakes I would not give to our dog. Haven't taken just one mouthful it was left and assumed I would not have to pay for this part. Not only was I charged full price a cost for toast was added to the bill which is an included item. Unfortunately, due to this poor customer service my wife and I will not be going back and we will let our friends now about our experience.

The 2nd visit this month. I have to say that the GF options are plentiful! The food has been delicious....the specials board always looks tempting. We have booked in for the tapas night coming up soon. The waitress serving drinks and taking food orders is very helpful and nothing is too much bother. Would highly recommend.

This lovely pub ticked all the boxes for us...so much so, that after we dined on the Saturday, we immediately booked there for Sunday evening. The staff were attentive and superb. Food was all homemade, delicious and plentiful. They supplied Lego for the children (and me!) and made sure we were ok throughout both evenings that we dined there. There's a play area and outside seating which is a nice touch, and they also offer accommodation which I missed when looking at booking a meal before travelling. In a nutshell, great for families, couples...well anyone really. When we're back down southwest soon, we're coming again. Thanks for a great welcome and meal.

We arrived little early but that was not a problem they sat us down and said someone would come . Bit of a wait but we were early by 15 minutes. When they took are order the lady next to us said there was an 1 hour wait on food . We waited 1/2 hour meal was only warm and fore £15.95 think it could be better . My dessert was nice and a nice price at £7.50 . Over all it was good. But nothing to say we would rush back . Shame food was warm and little meat .

Amazing food and extremely kid friendly whilst still maintaining a great calm atmosphere in a really beautiful pub , staff were so friendly and the food was brought out in very good time , even given the option of having our child’s meal brought out with our starter so they don’t have to wait / have more time to eat . My little one was given colouring and crayons too which she loved. Lots of easy parking and the toilets are extremely clean and modern too , we had a great time ! Thank you

Sunday 22nd October i was in a party of 5 having Sunday Lunch. Wr ordered 4 Beef roasts & a chicken pie. The pie was very good, the beef was Topside. I was a little disappointed i have to say-quality of the meat wasnt great, a bit chewy & i left most of it. Contrast this with a roast beef meal of Brisket at a pub in Cornwall 2 weeks ago (same cost) & it was cooked to perfection. The Anchor is q generous with their veg portions & the service was very good. Think they need to re-think their Beef or their supplier. For that reason i wouldnt order Beef if i returned

WATCH OUT The Anchor Inn, Hillfarrance, Taunton TA4 1AW operate strict 30 day cancellation conditions which cost me £255. Their conditions are not on their website & it's not until you have booked your accommodation & paid upfront online that you get a booking confirmation which details their cancellation conditions. 6 days before I was due to stay at The Anchor Inn my husband was diagnosed with cancer so I phoned them to cancel my booking. I also emailed them a letter from my local hospital confirming my husband was 'undergoing active treatment' so was not fit to travel. Their response was unless they could rerent my room in the meanwhile the 30 day cancellation policy would apply. They did not offer me the option of rebooking my stay at a later date when my husband may be fit to travel. They did not rerent my room so I lost £255. Most hotels operate a 24 or 48 hour cancellation policy. In my view given my circumstances their cancellation conditions are neither fair nor reasonable. So BEWARE The Anchor Inn, farance, Taunton TA4 1AW

We visited on Saturday lunchtime and were really pleased we did! Due to some flooded roads we were running late however a quick call and we were given directions on how to get there. It was definitely worth it, a group of 5, we had 4 pies and 1 gammon. All of us cleared our plates and had to try the puddings too, which were equally as good. Great value for money we felt, coming in at less than £25 per head for an alcoholic drink, main and dessert. Can imagine the roasts will be good too. Being new to the area, we will definitely be returning.

After hearing great reviews about this pub and probably 15 years since I last visited, I thought I'd give it a go. Personally, I'm a very fussy eater but chose the turkey roast and probably the best meal I've ever had, just a shame that it will end after Xmas Only negative would have been that we were put in a room away from the main eating area which was large, cold and echoey. Will definitely be back but will request the main part on booking. Keep up the good work.

After attending a recent funeral we booked a room as we didn’t want to travel home late at night. We stayed in room 1 and to say we were disappointed is an understatement. The room was very cold and unwelcoming. The front door had to be kicked to get in. The single beds were hard and uncomfortable. The decor was adequate however I would go as far as to say it was ‘thrown together.’The price of this room was £95.00 per night. Excluding breakfast. We were disgusted and would not recommend anyone to stay here.

We’ve just returned from a week stay in Hillfarrance and we visited the Anchor twice, on both occasions were really pleased. On the Sunday my husband had one of their famous pies and was not disappointed, and my beef roast was amazing with all the best trimmings! On our second visit we opted for the gyros and upon arrival the fish option had been removed from the daily menu. This however didn’t stop the staff whipping up this very meal for my husband with no issues whatsoever. We really enjoyed our visits, all staff were lovely and the locals even more so. It’s a lovely little place to visit and a must stop for a bite to eat or sample one of the many, MANY whiskeys or gins!

So very disappointing. We ordered the Bao buns with crispy pork. At £12.00, we expected something edible. The buns were limp and tasteless and very heavy. When we mentioned this, the manager outside used the “well no one else has complained about them, the table next to you loved theirs”. Don’t you hate that?My friend had the lamb, which she said was nice. I had the burger with cheese and bacon. It was almost cremated and very dry. The chips were good.Service was good and the setting more than amenable. Such a shame that I was made to feel awkward and embarrassed when I gave feedback. On my birthday too. I can not recommend this place. I know things are hard, but there was not an ounce of empathy.

Went yesterday for the first time as was in the area, we both had the steak and ale pie and I cannot express enough how delicious this pie was, the crust was clearly homemade and flawless with excellent colouring and you don’t get an individual pie you get a very decent wedge of pie - which means that the ratio of pastry to filling is right (as opposed to over 50% pastry) and there was a very decent amount of beautifully cooked steak with a hint of the ale it was cooked in - I don’t know how they did it but somehow the steak was sort of chargrilled around the edges (post cutting) which just made it mouth-wateringly lovely, the sides were great too but I just could have eaten that pie forever. The service was brilliant, absolutely spot on, we were greeted very well, social distancing measures were well thought out and unobtrusive- we felt very safe The test of true customer service is when something goes wrong, we were happily waiting for our starters and a member of the staff came to say it was running a little late, apologising for the wait - they’d run out of the fish goujons but still managed to put something together but wouldn’t charge for it (I think it might have been a slightly smaller portion or something) but still delicious. We didn’t feel hard done by at all and the staff were ever present and attentive, the bar tender was brilliant as my boyfriend arrived first and he found him somewhere to sit and enjoy a pint whilst I kept him waiting - when I arrived he said .. you must be Angela! Super friendly and remembered the name of the booking, Found us somewhere to sit whilst someone came to escort us to the table - we weren’t the only ones there by the way, it’s a popular place and we could tell why. So all in all, great food and great service - I think our server was Tamsyn (sorry if I got that wrong) Social distancing was well thought out so if you’re still debating whether to go out to eat don’t hesitate for this little gem of a pub it is absolutely great, and the food was worth every penny and I would add that these guys have not been able to work for a while so treat yourselves and support the industry, tip well if they deserve it and enjoy a taste of normality in these weird times.

We've been to the anchor quite alot, mainly on Sundays. Been meaning to write a review since last year. And I just want to say how professional, polite, and helpful the chef on the carvery is. He's always there every Sunday, and he works his butt off. Even in the height of summer he's there, and always greets you with a smile. (I think his name is Dan/Danny.)The food is always lovely. The chefs obviously work very hard, and I think sometimes go unnoticed when they're in the kitchens behind the scenes. We always leave a big tip for you!.Being from a family of chefs (mum and grandad) we know you guys always work long hours for little pay. I hope carvery chef sees this and knows he's great at what he does. We'll be back in March!.

We asked in advance if our party of eight could be seated somewhere as quiet as possible (as I am rather deaf) and we were placed in the bar area out of the main restaurant which was perfect. The food is locally sourced and of excellent quality, and the staff are happy to adapt dishes to accommodate dietary requirements or preferences. I didn't want chips with my shredded-turkey in ‘something*-and-barbecue-sauce’ in a bun, so had onion rings instead. (*Wish I could remember what that was as it was delicious!)Our waiter was friendly and helpful, and the service was very good: it's especially difficult to serve 8 people at the same time, and yet that was managed for each of the three courses. The only downside to this wonderful pub is that it is in the middle of nowhere (sorry Hillfarrance!) down narrow - often single track - roads. On the other hand, I don't want it to get too popular as there might not be room for me when I want to go back!

We were a party of 8 and had booked in advance. Everyone loved their meals, the Pies were sensational according to those the ate them, but so was the other food, Starters, mains and deserts. There was not a single moan, gripe or complaint. The beer drinkers enjoyed the selection and drinks were easy to order when wanted. The atmosphere was warm, friendly and good natured on a miserable night. It was well worth the drive on small narrow lanes from our base in Taunton and would happily go again when in the area. All 5 of us commented that this had to be the smallest portion of meat we’d ever had on a carvery, and we’re not all-you-can-eat/pile it high eaters. We politely asked the chef if that was a full portion, and he very huffily said it was, but reluctantly offered us more. The merest thinnest half slice extra was then cut, which still made it a small portion. Roast potatoes had been left a long time so were dry, and the veg choice wasn’t brilliant. Won’t be coming back

Having got to bar was able to choose a very good pint of Exmoor bitter, then carry back to furthest corner to join the rest of the group. Most chose the carvery, while two of us chose from the main menu. All enjoyed their food served by the excellent friendly waitresses, one of which while thinking no one was watching performed a little dance appreciated by one or more of the elder gentlemen ! Very good value and service. With a full dining room the acoustics proved a bit tricky, the low ceiling and hard surfaces made conversation somewhat difficult with anyone not immediately close to you.Apart from that a very enjoyable time had by all.Thank you

Decided to pop in for a quick drink, but had a hungry 12 year old and thought we’d have a bite to eat. Wow! 12 year old had some chips, which were a generous portion and beautifully cooked, but lots of places sell chips! My husband and I ordered the mixed breads and the Somerset Sharing platter from the starters section. It came quickly, and was unbelievable. There was pate, crackling popcorn, 2 breadcrumbed ham hock balls, some lovely seeded, honeyed sausage pieces, a terrine -type dish, and Melba toast. It was all perfect, so delicious, nicely presented and the perfect amount. The mixed breads were 5 different bread rolls, all warm, all clearly freshly baked. As well as a seeded brown roll and a small white french roll, there was a gorgeous saffron type roll, a herby one and one that was crispy and had maybe thyme on it? Thank you guys, we will definitely be back.

Visited here for the first time and we certainly won’t be returning. We sat in the garden with the kids and went in to order our food. The service at the bar was so bad. Two girls who were both rude, both served other customers before us despite us being first. When the girl finally cane to us she said she wouldn’t take a food order as she needed to give the kitchen a break and for us to come back later. It was already nearly 8 o’clock. No apology just an attitude. Not impressed at all and will not return due to that attitude that was not needed. Don’t have weddings if you can’t cope and can’t be reasonable with your other customers.

4 us went for a meal last night, we all had steaks, they were very busy, didn't have to wait that long , each one of us had our steaks cooked different, and each one was cooked to perfection, the one of the best steaks I have ever had !!! The only thing that let it down for me was mushrooms, the steaks didn't come with mushrooms. but apart from that the food was amazing.

Extremely upset with are experience today which is a shame as we tried the place out the week before in preparation for a family meal which we haven’t done for over a year so we wanted it to pick the right place so the day would be special. My lasagna came out burnt black on top and when told the gentlemen who served it to me said I thought it looked suspicious which I was shocked he carried on serving it to me. Then after waiting another 20 minutes for the new lasagna And my family already had finished there the second one came back which looked like the same one but with melted cheese on top. So at that point I had gone off eating and said don’t worry about it. The waiter was extremely rude and said to me you haven’t even tried it and his attitude was appalling and very confrontational. This is a shame as I know the dish is nice as I had it on Tuesday. Overall I have left the place hungry, upset and astonished that the waiter was so rude. This has ruined my day. Just hope you can have a word with waiter as his customer service skills are truly horrendous and will loose a lot of costume.

We held a 90th birthday party here for family and friends and it couldn’t have gone smoother. The food was excellent and catered to a wide range of diets and ages and the staff were so friendly and helpful. The room was decorated beautifully and children loved the outdoor play area. Highly recommended for all!

Yesterday, I was one of a group of six that had lunch here. As there was a large group in the restaurant, our table was laid up in the lounge bar. We all enjoyed the meal & then ordered coffees. It was 2-45 but we were told by the waitress (who was otherwise attentive) that as they shut at 3pm, everything was turned off. How long does it take to make a few coffees? Sadly, their attitude has ruled this inn as a "no go." We were all looking for somewhere in this area that could be recommended to others & frequented by ourselves, but, not now.

We have been to the Anchor Inn on a few occasions and have been really impressed every time. The menu consists of predominantly traditional ''pub' style meals which are always done really well. It's the 'specials' though what makes this place stand out and they are a cut above every time. The staff are always attentive and it's always a really nice atmosphere.

Having been a few times I’ve never had a bad experience here, the staff are all so friendly and very knowledgeable of the menu and where products are sourced from. The menu is varied and offers a good selection of home cooked food from pub classics to the specials board which is always very intriguing. I would highly recommend the anchor as it’s the best pub I’ve eaten at in Somerset. Keep up the good work team anchor

A large group of us had been out walking in the area and popped in for a drink at lunchtime before making our way home. Amongst other drinks we ordered six coffees. We were sat in the very nice warm bar enjoying the ambience of the place when the bar man started shouting that we had not paid for one of these. He was almost apoplectic over the £2.20 we allegedly hadn't paid. After making a real song and dance over this he realised the mistake was his! Needless to say we won't be going back there again which is a shame as the food menu looked very interesting.

Visited last night with friend. Decided to have sirloin steak for treat. Really bad decision. I have never had such a bad steak. So chewy and onion rings just tasted of cooking oil. Such a shame as don’t go out that often and was so disappointed.

We visited The Anchor Inn last night for an evening meal with friends. The staff were very attentive and friendly and the place was buzzing. Three of us opted for the speciality pies and one chose a trio of sausages, all served with mustard mash and fresh veg. The food was delicious and beautifully cooked. We will definitely visit sometime soon in order to try something else from the extensive menu.

We visited the Anchor for the first time and had Sunday lunch in the bar area, we had our dog with us. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming and the service was good. We both opted for a traditional roast and everything was cooked as it should be, had the cheesecake for a sweet which was excellent. The Anchor staff clearly think about their guests and the food they serve well worth a visit.

We popped to the Anchor for an early evening steak. We hadn’t booked and although the bar area was very quiet, we were escorted to the dining room. It wasn’t a very pleasant place to eat to be honest. It was very noisy and everyone’s voice echoed around the room. The chairs were wooden, without cushions, so they were not very comfortable. There was a large family with young children sharing the dining room with us so it was very loud and if I’m honest, it felt like we were in a busy/noisy canteen. In hindsight, we should of asked if we could be moved back the bar area, but I can’t help but think that we should never have been allocated that room in the first place (booking or no booking, as the bar was virtually empty). The food was ok, with the exception of my steak which was extremely tough, to the point that I couldn’t eat it. We were asked by the waitress if everything was ok with our meals, but that was before I had tried my steak. My husband replied yes, but his steak was actually fine. Again, I appreciate that I should have raised the issue at the time to give the staff the opportunity of putting it right, but we were in a hurry and we’d already waited for some considerable time for our food. I did explain how bad the steak was when our plates were collected. The waitress could see for herself that I had barely touched it. Unfortunately, we had paid in advance for our food. Otherwise, I would have asked for a significant discount. All in all, not a pleasant experience...

We are fortunate to still have family in Taunton do have an excuse to sample the delights on the menus. This is a traditional family run Pub that's raised its game and keeps you coming back to see staff that remember you and take the time to catch up.

Stopped here for lunch while traveling to Porlock for a weeks holiday and so glad we did. The food was lovely and welcoming especially as one of our party have some food requirements which weren't on the menu, but once requested the staff were very accommodating. There is a lovely children's play area which is safe and our grandchildren loved it.

We came here for Sunday Lunch as a large party of 18 and age range from 1 to 84 and had booked a large table in the airy, function room. It is well sign posted and there is easy parking. All was very efficient and organised with drinks served to the table. We had the carvery which was excellent with a choice of 3 roast meats, the beef was especially good and very tender, roast potatoes, parsnips, cauliflower cheese, carrots, broccoli and all the condiments and sauces. The function room has many larger tables and so we went to the carvery as a table when we were ready so there were no queues. All dishes on the carvery were constantly being refilled so food was hot and plentiful. Other dishes were also available on the menu. There was a range of about 6 desserts from ice cream and crumble to pannacotta and cheesecake. 2 courses, carvery and dessert was £14.95 which we though was excellent value and quality. There is also a large outdoor, fenced play area which the children loved and inside on the tables there were lego, crayons and colouring in sheets, so everyone could enjoy their meals and fun in their own way.

The food was OK but not outstanding. Pork loin and sauce was good but vegetables were meagre. The potato dish was overcooked a bit, and the cabbage and bacon was very good but also very little - 3 strips of sliced cabbage is really only a garnish, and carrots were bland. I had a white chocolate cheese cake for pud and it was good. Service was slow to take the order and food came about 25 minutes after order and was freshly cooked. Cost was £25 each, including main, pudding and a drink each, just a little high perhaps. The surroundings were fine although the chairs could do with cushions after two hours. The meat portions were generous but the vegetables and hard chairs cost them a point from 4 down to 3 from me.

My parents stay here at least once a year when visiting the West Somerset Railway. This year I joined them and we stayed in one of the family rooms. We had a great time and ate in the pub each night. The food was excellent with a superb vegetarian pie on the specials. All the staff were friendly and made us feel very welcome, even remembering our drinks order from one night to The next. The rooms were lovely, they were clean and neat as was the bathroom. I would definitely recommend this place and plan to return later in the year.

Staff did not seem to want to deal with me when checking in they seemed more interested in the people at the bar or restaurant. Maybe they were not used to dealing with people of colour? . I arrived and went to the bar and waited to be seen to the lady behind the bar clearly saw me there however when she finished serving one person she blatantly ignored me and served a gentleman that came in from outside, when I finally got seen to by someone else he rushed through the so called check in took payment and pointed to where my rooms were and that was that.

Great pub, great food and great service and really like the decor too. Food was so good and fresh. It was quiz night the night we went and it was a great atmosphere. Like being in someone's front room. We joined in the quiz although we are not quizzers but made to feel part of it thanks to the quiz master. Don't know her name but she was great. Had a fabulous evening. Thanks to all at the White Horse

We didn’t stay at the hotel but had Afternoon Tea there which this review is about! Poor service as waiters seem to have no idea how to serve. We were rushed to pay as they were finishing for the day. We were not offered what type of tea to have. One of us asked for topping up the water glass while the other two got ignored! They had no knowledge of the place either given it’s a building with some history! A refreshing conversation was with the gardener who has good knowledge of the place, but unfortunately it was too late.
