If you like pie this is the place to come - they are home made and just lovely - served with home made chips too. There is a huge menu of other things to eat too. Nice ale and fantastic view - all in all a decent northumbrian pub - will definitely be back

Good size carpark just make sure you put in the registration number plate at the bar! Check in at the bar Shown to room All information given then Room was up a flight of stairs Very spacious room as was the shower room. Stunning scenery views. Bed was comfortable until I got bitten woke up at 3:30am itching a few bites marks on different parts of my body, when informed the lady in the morning was very apologetic and said her boss be would down shortly. The landlady came down and asked if It was a allergic reaction to the bed sheets !!! Even though you could blankly see they were bites ! Well we've never had bed bugs before and it's a new mattress! Was my answer! And that was that !!! Shower was hot ,not very powerful and stop ½ though and then come back on cold ! Then hot hot again so hurrying to get finished before it stopped again! Breakfast included Evening meal was excellent lots of good choices Available and excellent value Lots of special pies Location is set in beautiful countryside but not much close by . Because of the bite marks and shower I wouldn't stay again But would definitely eat in the restaurant again! .

Lovely location, lovely food, lovely restaurant, terrible service ☹️ waited 5 minutes at the empty bar, got handed a menu to pick any table, waitress approached explained I wasn't ready to order yet to be eyerolled at, food arrived, no one returned to ask if it was OK, if we required more drinks etc, sat with empty plates for 25minutes awaiting the bill to have to go to the bar and ask if we could pay.

Posted on behalf of my friend Visited here to celebrate a birthday and will not be back. One of the guests is visually impaired and another was looking after a young child. So had a lot going on handling the trip out. Would not expect to be looking out for a sign stating I was required to enter car reg so did not notice one. I have received a £100 parking fine which is extortionate as I did not enter my car reg. I would expect guests to be advised of this when they take their seats at the table. I think it is unfair to be charged so called the restaurant and was told to appeal to have it reduced to £20 which I still think is an unnecessary expense for pensioners to pay who were not aware of the parking rules. I am sure that treatment of this situation will make others think twice about coming if you are unable to quash this charge. 😡

Eaten in the pub a few times, but Sunday lunch is very good. Always extra veg if you have hungry family members and the gravy is definitely not rationed. We also rang a head to add a dog & pushchair and this was accommodated without causing problems to other diners. It’s always very busy which may be a reason for very little small talk but a slightly friendlier front of house would only add to any visit.

This is fantastic pub/restaurant. We were staying in the area looking for somewhere to eat and happened upon the Anchor. Such great choice and well priced, lovely welcome and of course - pies! If pies are your thing this is the place, ten to choose from and that happened on this occasion to be "limited" . Had the steak and ale, fantastic. Great beer and atmosphere as well.

Been a few times now and I love it and will go back many more times and highly recommend it to anyone who'll listen. But I'd stay well away from the Sunday roast dinners. Their beautiful but you get NOWT! 2 roasties and a teaspoon of mash topped with a sliver of meat and a sprig of veg isn't worth 15 quid sorry. It's not about the money, Its just NOT a Sunday roast. Plates should be loaded in a lovely warm country pub like this. Everything else on the menu is MAHOOSIVE and delicious. Everything else about the place is sooo perfect. Staff. Atmosphere. Service. Everything. Go now. Just stick to the normal menu.

We stayed here for a wedding we were going to at Healey Hall (£15 taxi e.w.) and were really happy. Nice friendly staff, good breakfast, clean room, very nice bathroom. We arrived too late to eat unfortunately but bought three of the pies to cook at home when we checked out and they were great so I am sure the restaurant would be excellent. Sure little bit of road noise but setting was gorgeous. Had blind and thick curtains to keep down the morning light waking us up which I like. Really good value for money in my view and I would definitely stay again if in the area.

Visited the Anchor for a family meal. Service was great, car park requires validation which was easy enough, food was very average. I had fish and chips, chips were nice, portion size was generous, but the fish batter was under cooked and doughy. Never saw the rooms. Probably wouldn't make the effort to go back with it being quite remote location and underwhelming food

Last minute booking. Sunday dinner was lovely although the beef was a tad dry. We were seated and served within minutes and waited very little time for our food. Didn't look to be much on the plate but there was plenty as I couldn't finish it. (Bit disappointed in that as I wanted a pudding) The room was decent enough. Does what it says on the tin. Tv, kettle, hairdryer, straightners and bathrobes. Could do with a bit .ore attention to cleaning. Not bad but some cobwebs here and there. It was just me and the hubby, the bar was a bit busy on the night time so we took ourselves through to the pool room and had a few games. We were the only people in there. A gentleman who I presume works there xa.e through at one point and asked if we would like the heating put on. Stunning views on a nice day On a whole we enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back x

I’m writing this review on behalf of my son who visited back in March with a mate for a meal was never told about registering for parking you wouldn’t expect to it’s a huge pub carpark in a village in the countryside .A few days later he received a parking ticket for £60 increased to £100 if not paid within 14 days .We phoned the owner who informed us to phone the parking company & present his receipt as evidence which would then quash the fine & only pay a £20 admin fee to be paid back in the form of a voucher from owner .Sounds straight forward but no after submitting appeal it’s had no reply he’s had to pay the £60 & you can’t contact anyone total rip off . We have lived in a nearby village for over 20 years & although not regulars were often customers with family & friends & always enjoyed the meals. On principle I will never go here again hope they enjoy there parking fine plunder !

Used to visit this pub over 25 years ago when Chuck Hannant was the nanager. The food then was always good, his lobster was fabulous. Times have changed. First surprise was the car park. They have installed ANPR on the car park, registration screen is on the bar. £100 fine if you don't register your vehicle. Apparently this is to stop walkers from parking & heading off into the countryside. Second was Sunday lunch price - up £1 from their advertised price online. If you want a mellow & relaxing experience this pub is not for you - screaming children on the next table & dogs barking & growling at each other. I have to agree with Tim Martin here - I don't think dogs should be allowed in a restaurant. The table was incredibly sticky. Meals came - it was a decent plateful, but my beef had been artistically draped over a roast potato to make it look like there was more there. Beef was cooked well, veg was a little too al dente for my liking, our companion's mince & leek pudding not so great. Mince did not have a lot if meat in it, it was greasy & dropping through the fork prongs.' Leek pudding' beyond description. A preformed lump of starch. Usual inflated prices on lager ( but not as bad as some pubs in the area). This is one to miss for me. Sunday lunch £13.95. ( Surprisingly mince the same price).

Came here for an evening meal whilst staying in self catering accomodation not far away and will 100% be finding a reason to visit again. Staff were friendly and welcoming, dining area was clean and spacious and the food was out of this world. Myself and my husband both opted for one of their home made pies and all I can say is wow! Firstly they were actually home made which may sound silly but a lot of places you find things clearly aren't. The pastry was light and flakey, they were absolutely bursting with filling and tasted incredible. My husband has not stopped raving about the chicken curry pie! My only disappointment was that I am recovering from illness so couldn't manage more than a quarter of the pie but that is by no means a reflection on the establishment and I am looking forward to returning when I am in full health to really enjoy it! Certainly not a luxury room. No extra touches, as would be expected at a luxury stay. Bathroom needs attention regarding cleanliness. Filthy toiletry tray! Shower cubicle needs deep clean and a refresh. Staff friendly, however, is it acceptable to pet a dog, and continue waitressing duties without washing hands? In fact, overall hand washing is lacking. This is basic hygiene. Food- evening meal good, breakfast average. Wouldn't stay here again.

We were staying in a cottage nearby, and looked to find dog friendly pubs in the area. The Anchor did not disappoint, Fortunately I did book a table as it was extremely busy when we arrived and you could see it was almost full. We were seated near a lovely fire, which as it was a cold day was very welcoming. We ordered the Roast Lamb and it arrived very quickly, no problem with the service, and the meal was lovely with nice meat and great Yorkshire puds, the veg were served separately which we prefer. All in all a good experience for a reasonable price.

We ate in the restaurant, food fantastic service great. The home made chips were the best we’ve eaten in years, as for the ham and the pie, exactly the same, couldn’t fault at all. It was nice having games room, though empty, was 1st time playing pool in decades, very enjoyable. Breakfast was the best we’ve eaten in a while. Perfect boiled egg and soldiers, and bacon and egg. Difficult to know where to start. My vegetarian meal, picked from a lack lustre list, was very poor both in taste and presentation. As I was leaving I asked to speak to the manager to leave some feedback expecting a simple apology or such like, and hoped maybe they would do better for future customers. I was shocked when out of nowhere one of the owners interjected verbally aggressively, and then physically forced money into my hand! Which i did not ask for (put it in the charity box). I was then met by an equally aggressive co owner. It was all very weird. i don't know what the owners backstory is to cause such an unwarranted outburst. but don't take it out on hapless customers please. I hope you are ashamed of your behaviour, but I won't hold my breath.

Went for Sunday lunch at 4pm with my wife, daughter and granddaughter. No complaints about the food, it was very nice. However that is as good as it gets. On entering we were made about as welcome as a pork sausage at a Jewish wedding buffet. The two waitresses who served us were surly and unpleasant to the point of embarrassment. If they don’t enjoy this kind of work why do they do it ? Because ultimately it will affect business as customers won’t go back. Like we don’t intend to. Because although we enjoyed the food we did not like the atmosphere. I would suggest the two girls who served us look for an occupation that would more suit their demeanour, ie ushers at a crematorium, or mausoleum attendants, or some such occupation. Just leave any ideas of pursuing a job that involves being welcoming, pleasant and outgoing well alone. Finally, we waited and waited to request the dessert menu. We eventually got it and decided what we were going to have. However we were abandoned, nobody ever came back to take our order. This would have been four desserts, another glass of wine and three coffees. That’s nearly £40 extra revenue they lost out on because we gave up the ghost and just got up and left. They were also tipped accordingly, ie £zero. Bear in mind, this was 4pm and pretty quiet. What on earth the service is like when it’s busy is a frightening thought. We won’t be going back.

Very surprised to see historic reviews stating unwelcoming staff! Two separate occasions May 21st and 23rd 2021, whilst catering for a full restaurant, were lovely, extremely well organised, adding to a lovely meal and pleasant experience. Lady i/c was particularly pleasant, and, on both occasions beautifully dressed. Wife & I had pies to die for, hers chicken, mine pheasant (the latter on both visits, they were that good). Chips on other plates didn't look apertising, so we had mash, mushy peas and veg. Personally I thoroughly enjoyed all, particularly the veg. Roomy restaurant with views on one side. Parking was tricky as apart from travelling by car, there isn't really an alternative. Even on the 21st., in `stinking` awful weather many had arrived to enjoy this venue. Yes, I would most certainly recommend the Anchor.

We were shown to our table and then left for just over 20 minutes before someone took our order. It wasn’t overly busy although that was the reason given by the staff member. Booked a table for four, we were shown into the restaurant, apart from a table that had two people sitting at it the restaurant was empty. We were given a table right next to the occupied table, you felt as if you were almost sitting on there knees so we moved to another table as we didn’t want to hear other people’s conversation and I’m sure they didn’t want to hear ours.We ordered drinks and two starters and four mains, the starters duly arrived which was a black pudding stack coated in crumbs and it looked deep fried, it was tasty enough but the coating was to thick and took the edge of the meal. The mains were average we had 2 chicken, 1 bubble and squeak and 1 sizzling beef that had lost its sizzle, There a couple of down sides the car park is about 50/60 metres away from door which if the weather is inclement then you may get a wet/ wind swept, there are no blue badge bays, but the worst is the gents toilet, there are two cubicles in it and behind them is a window, as the separation wall doesn’t go all the way you have a unrestricted view of the person next to you, there is certainly no privacy. The bill was just short of £110 for the four of us, would I return not unless the food steps up a notch and something is done with the toilets.

We have been coming to The Anchor Inn over the last 8 years or so, but our last visit will be the very last time. Although they have never been good on customer service, I’ve always overlooked it. I’m not one to be fussed over, so we’ve always pretty much got on with it. We visited on Saturday night. There was a private function on in the restaurant, so we chose a table in the bar area. I suppose this was how I witnessed how poor the staff actually are. Although there was ample staff on duty, they actually try to avoid eye contact with the customers. The owners are always present, but show no interest in their customers, other than their family/friends; the lady busies herself, the man takes a seat at the bar, watching the clientele go by. Service was very slow and the food was below average. When the table next to us left, no one cleared the table. Another couple came in looking for a table and not one member of staff offered to seat them. The couple walked the length of the pub, stood for a couple of minutes in front of the gaggle of staff (including who I presume is the Manager/owners son) then left! Unhelped by anyone. You can’t totally blame the waitresses as the owners/managers set such a poor example. This place is bad from the top down over. I doubt that the management bother to read these reviews, if they show no interest in the customers in the restaurant, why take an interest later, so I vowed never to return. I have given 1 star because I was unable to leave 0 stars, otherwise I would have.

Just what you need on a cold windy day in Northumberland The staff were all very cheerful and friendly and did not rush us to choose our food. There is a good selection of food but two of us went for the Haddock and chips and two for the homemade chicken, leek and mushroom pie with chips. There was no problem switching the mushy peas to garden peas either. All the meals were very good with real home made chips, very tasty. The pies are very big so we were not able to finish them but were very good with lots of filling.

I love this place but the breakfast is terrible I don't know if it's tho norm because food in evenings is usually top notch but this breakfast yuck floppy bacon bland beans and greasy black pudding two tiny slices of toast and a Cumberland sausage on a breakfast just wrong they are far to rich I will be back in evenings but never again in morning

I have had several lunches at the Anchor after playing golf at Staley and the food is really good. I persuaded the family to pop in on our way home from Edinburgh airport and we were not disappointed. The food has lots of flavour and the only negative I can give is that the portions were maybe too large and very rich. Really good selection of food on the menu and the speciality pies are worth trying. The lunch special is excellent for two coruses. Definitely worth a try if you fancy a drive out in the country.

Decided to treat ourselves as we had been before. Booked the table by phone, used to be advisable but wasn't as busy this visit. I can understand why, food not nearly as good had the beef and chicken sizzler(was served in a cast iron mini pan lucky if there was for tiny strips of each in the sauce one piece of mushroom, a couple of slices of onion) Very disappointed . Went to pay wasn't asked if everything was ok and staff to busy chatting amongst themselves to talk to customer was just handed bill and card machine. Very rude, Will not be back

Couldn’t fault the food excellent but the one member of staff was not particularly friendly or helpful. We visited on a Monday lunchtime to celebrate a family birthday and it was not busy. The menu was fairly extensive and the food when it came was delicious. I will certainly be visiting again and hope the staff are a bit more friendly!

Visited here due to the vast range of menu and definitely spoilt for choice on highlighted with a great selection on the specials board. Service was fast we weren’t waiting long at all which when arrived looked and tasted great and big portion size is a big bonus.

Sunday lunch should be a pleasant and relaxed feature of a weekend, well it isn't here! Food is poor is every respect from presentation to quantity and quality, I'm not really going to waste my time on a long review for this place, if they cant be bothered to try harder then I don't see why I should either.

We had not been to the Anchor for a number of years and on the recommendation of a friend called in yesterday . Have to say the views when we arrived were fantastic and the inside was warm and friendly. We settled for the 2course deal and have to say the food was of a very high standard .it will not be as many years before we return again

We called in for a meal on our way home and were not disappointed. The inn is dog friendly in the wooden floored area of the dining area/ bar and a bowl of water provided. We had the fish, chips and mushy peas which were of good quality. The portion sizes were more than ample and the prices a little higher than expected for an inn. Staff gave us a great service and were friendly throughout our visit. I would return.

Its been quite a few years since we visited here. Very disappointing, the food was poor and the pub dirty and dated. Reheat veg and chips we think not sure what they were, nice belly pork, fish lots of bones - I did point this out and was told that was a first !!

Been a good few years since we visited this pub which used to be an absolute gem , its out of the way set in beautiful countryside and i am pleased to see its still very much worth the effort. Very quick and polite service of a great value for money 2 course meal, meat and veg cooked the way i like it. Loads of meals on the menu that sound great so we will not leave it so long before returning.

We were delighted with the menu and specials on offer last night. We had a bottle Pinotage to get us started at a very sensible price of £13.95. I had Black pudding and stilton balls - they were absolutely delicious and followed this with Chicken and Beef strips in a peppercorn sauce with chips and onions ring. This was also delicious and we had to ask for a spoon so we didn't waste any of the sauce. Onion rings were the best we've had anywhere. With stunning views over the valley it's a must for a summer night out.

We visited here on a stormy day for a late lunch, food is served all day. The £10.00 two course meal was available but after deliberating over all the scrumptious sounding specials we opted for scampi and chips served with coleslaw and peas and a lemon wedge. It was superb. We sat at a table for two beside the fire and thoroughly enjoyed our experience there. The staff were friendly and the service superb. we were asked what sauces we would prefer and opted for tartare sauce and a plentiful helping served in a dish immediately arrived. There were numerous people in there despite it being late for lunches and the booth and table seating would be ideal for a large family or group. There is also a restaurant area.We are looking forward to a return visit planning an appetite building walk pre food!

It was many years since we had been to the Anchor - the last time was probably for a wedding reception. We took my elderly parents for lunch - a sort of trip down memory lane. I have to say that we were not in any way disappointed; a bitterly cold and muggy day outside, but wonderfully warm, cosy and comfortable inside. We went for the 2-course special, at £10 a head, offering a very good choice of starters and main courses and available between 12 noon and 5 pm. Two of us had pate with red onion marmelade, one had soup and the other nachos - as you can see, an eclectic range. Main courses were battered haddock and chips, served with delicious minted pea puree (my wife gave me a taste of hers); a roast dinner (loads of pork loin, which defeated my father) and chilli served with rice and garlic bread. Not one single moan, from any of us. Service was perfect and it was an experience I'd be keen to repeat. Thoroughly recommended.

A return visit as really enjoyed previous trips, brought friends to sample it but unfortunately this time it felt very very overpriced for what we had. We opted for several small plates for 4 of us as we were spoilt for choice and the specialboard read so well. The 8 fresh oysters to begin with were delicious. This then followed with prawn salad / cocktail, lacked flavour and not really enough sauce a small extra amount was brought when asked. The Scallops off the special board again were hot and fresh and tasty. Another special Cajun whitebait served on a flat bread with salad really did lack flavour, very little whitebait and the batter was just too thick, not good at all, it was more bread and salad than fish unfortunately. Pil pil prawns were very tasty, nice big shell on prawns. One main issue was we did feel very slightly rushed as the food arrived nearly all together but as the table just wasn't big enough to hold the food it was a balancing act. What a shame but we feel it now has top restaurant prices but unfortunately a cafe style atmosphere.
