Usually great food but disappointed with the squid. Soggy. Normally get the lobster fries which are excellent but unfortunately didn’t have any when they opened.

On a wee break down near bamburgh, thought we would take a wee trip into seahouses for a takeaway. Ordered a haddock supper ( fish and chips) the fish had a lovely crispy batter, however the chips I found a bit soggy and greasy. To be honest really good portion sizes and fish was of good quality . However im spoiled for choice on the east coast of Scotland.

Last time we visited Seahouses we ate here and loved it. This time we had take away. 2 Fish n Chips, 1 Sausage n Chips, 2 Mushy Peas and 1 Curry Sauce. £35 - not cheap. The portions were large but the chips weren't great. Big batter but a fairly skinny bit of fish inside. Despite reminding the server, we were missing one of the portions of peas. So, disappointing. With the competition nearby, and the sea on the doorstep, there's no excuse to serve less than excellent, and this fell far short.

Stopped off here on the way back from a Scotland roadtrip because I'd heard from several people and reviews that the fish and chips were excellent. Unfortunately I found it to be only average - I've certainly had much better fish and chips. Staff were welcoming and friendly, and I was served quickly. They only offer one sized portion of each type of fish priced at £15.50 - it is a very generous portion, but probably too much for those with smaller appetites or like me if you've just stopped for a light lunch breaking up a long journey. The fish and chips were nice enough but nothing special compared to what you'd find at your local. They do offer a variety of types of fish that you wouldnt get at most places.

Lovely feeling when you walk in, it seemed quiet when we got there around 6.45pm. Sat at a table looking onto the outside garden area. It took almost an hour for 3 tiny duck pancakes as a starter to arrive! Average in taste. We waited a further 10-15 minutes for our mains: Steak pie, mash & veg and a smashed burger. I hate it when I expect a pie but only get a pie crust! Mash was cold, small jug of gravy was ok. Burger was ok, but not what we were expecting, smaller and underwhelming is the best description. On a lighter note, the South African Sauvignon Blanc was delicious. Overall cost us £64 for a mediocre meal that neither of us really enjoyed.

This is a review based on the food (Friday night) as I didn't stay in the rooms... After a few years absence I visited The Anchor in Whittonstall with a friend who had traveled up from down South earlier that day. I have to say I was very impressed with the food. We had goat's cheese and and chicken liver pate as our starters and both were surprisingly large for a starter. Both were very nice. That was then followed by fish & chips and chicken curry where the rice was substituted for chips. Again, both meals were large and very tasty. I usually prefer to make my own curries which are so hot they aren't of any interest to the rest of my family and while I resisted the urge to ask if I could have a bowl of chopped fresh chilies at the side I found the curry to be amply spiced, with creamy sauce and well cooked chips. The fish and chips my friend had was a really good sized fish and plenty of home made chips. The cost for the meal (with a couple of pints each) worked out at around £36 each which admittedly isn't the cheapest but the meals were great quality and very tasty - I'd rather pay more for good food than less for poor food so I'd definitely recommend The Anchor as a good place to eat out. We were both pleasantly impressed. I can't comment on the rest of the menu since I'm not Mr. Creosote - I can only eat so much and I was VERY full when I'd finished. My friend did not finish his main course and I was gutted at that since although his fish looked very nice I had no room for it and the remains had to go back. The service was fine and I didn't catch the name of the young waiters but both male and female (or whatever they identify as) servers were attentive and had good banter. Although I'm local (1 mile away from The Anchor) I would have had no problem posting a negative review if the experience was negative. But it was not and I will definitely be going back at some point in the near future. The sad fact is that food, service and drink now costs way more than it did before 2020 but this is one place where you get what you pay for. Recommended.

We had lunch here recently and I ordered the feta and beetroot salad for £11.50. What came was a bowl of lettuce only with a few pieces of feta. When asked if meal was ok I explained the meal wasn't as advertised and had no beetroot and it was only lettuce and I couldn't eat it. She said she would ask the chef. 10 mins later she came back to say sorry the chef didn't put it on and that she would take some money off. I got £3.68 off bill. Waitress was so lovely but I wouldn't go back it was such an awful meal for a really high price.
