Called in for a quick drink and a chat with my fiancéin what we thought was a friendlylocal pub. We had a fraught morning and needed to quickly check our bank and dates regarding something extremely important and was immediately and extremely rudely told 'this is a no phone pub' I love that!! Having worked in hospitality for years I am a huge fan of encouraging people to socialise without being stuck in mobile phones but the key word here is ' encourage'. I have never been spoken to so disgustingly nor met with such abhorrent and unessesary rudness in my life. I explained very promptly if I don't check my banking app I won't be able to buy another drink and i need fo check something extremely important and was met with mocking and further rants from regulars. This pub also refuses dogs so that clearly says it all!!!!! Not a Yorkshire pub at all!!!! Hope your business learns how to treat people in the future, with care and concern and respect!!! as my day was completely ruined by your nasty bullying behaviour. Shameful place.

This tiny pub is a portal into a bygone era of British communal life. Step through its doors and into the miniscule bar and you will be warmed not only by the open fire but also by the true friendliness of all those inside. With a maximum capacity of maybe a dozen folk in the main room you will be sat so close to others you will be compelled to chat and make company. With a discouragement of electronics you will find yourself deep in conversation in no time. This is rather a unique experience in 2023 but a welcome one. The beer is totally top notch and the prices very reasonable. I cannot recommend this pub enough. This is Britain as I imagine it used to be. It is not part of a chain. It does not serve generic plates of food. It does not have children dashing about. There is no TV, music or gambling machine. It is great beer, good company and conversation. Every village and town should have one. Brilliant!

This popular pub has gone to the dogs recently. The tennant, who started with great promise, has lost his drive and annihlated regulars who no longer frequent the pub. He closes early, even though he is paid to serve to time and gives out an unpleasant atmosphere. Humphrey, take note.

Sam Smith pubs are different, if you follow the brewery rules as the landlord has to, you should enjoy this pub. The building is grade 2 listed, a typical Victorian pub which retains an old style bar, a true drinking room. The no mobiles rule is strictly adhered to so people talk to each other. The landlord is friendly, the customers are friendly! We drank Old Brewery Bitter served by handpump and from an Oak cask. It was fit as a butchers dog. We just stumbled on this pub,a pleasant surprise after a 13 mile up and downhill walk. The other pubs in Guisborough are nothing to write home about , this one makes up for all the others!

Rented a small cottage in guisborough next door to this pub. Popped in for a pint before we heading home as it always looked a good place to have a drink. If you’re in the area I would highly recommend a visit. An extremely friendly landlord and landlady in a very pleasant environment. My only regret is that I hadn’t popped in sooner but will definitely be drinking there when I come back.

Quirky, interesting and cheap. The world would be a poorer place without the Anchor. Do be aware of the zealous enforcement of the No Digital device rule by the new management. Take your phone out of your pocket to check your messages, take a photo, order a taxi or post a review and you may be asked to leave. Don't ask if you can have the wifi code.....

The pub is owned by Sam Smiths, to whit Humphrey Smith [worth checking out Google], being one of two in the town, from that Tadcaster brewery.Situated slightly off the town main street to the South East: however, there is next to no immediate parking, unless there is a letter Q in the name of the month.Has a bar, snug and a pleasant conservatory and a garden. Spanking fires in the first two rooms, in Winter.Despite Mr. Smith's manifold eccentricities, the tenant sticks at it. He runs a tight ship- good beer, good conversation, and the pub is decidedly popular- deservedly.Beer is limited to the brewery ONLY, so don't expect anything out of their range, and crisps/ nuts will have to suffice hunger pangs, but in truth- what more can one ask for ? Decent Stout, number of Lagers,Bitters, Ciders- draught and bottled, and Bottled Chocolate Stout, Fruit Beer, Wheat Beer, Pale Ale in bottle, though personally I wouldn't be paying the prices asked for the wines. There is no food, no music.Cheap beer, first class settingsI recommend a visit ASAP, as Sam Smiths' publicans of any longevity are a dying breed.

I'm alone among friends regarding Sam Smiths public houses. For me it represents good beer at affordable prices. The Anchor goes beyond that by having plenty of room and an excellent warmly heated courtyard with comfortable seating. While the purists drinking branded spirits may want their usual tipple, beer drinkers can't fail to be impressed with what Mr Smith has to offer. For me the bottled Organic Lager is the best and always served ice cold!

What could be more original for an English Inn to be set as the Angel is in the middle of a row of houses with a stone uneven floor just like I remember from the 1940s/50s. We had only dropped in for a "swift half" of Old Brewery while dinner was being prepared at home. However, we stayed a little longer than planned but were finally called through modern technology. A great experience, with friendly staff. My taste buds await my next visit.ColinB. Toronto.P.S. Ref. my rating, remember Beer is a food.

Stepping into the Anchor is like stepping back 40 years to the time when pubs were centres of the community and sold lovely beer cheaply. Sam Smiths bitter at £1.80 a pint. Yes please!. I have tasted alot of lagers, and this is probably worse than Kestrel, and Hansa...(latter does not exist anymore for a reason)..If you can manage to get to wetting your lips with a third pint...you are either past the point of caring...because it is potent...or in my case ...I cannot stomach the taste no more.

Absolutely Delicious Homemade pastries 😋 we'd been out walking along the beach and surrounding countryside and literally stumbled upon Craig's Bakery on walking back through Marske to the carpark. The choice available was fab and the owner is obviously passionate about making his pastries just that little bit different. We bought a Sour dough Blondie and Cinnamon Danish to take away and omg they were both absolutely delicious- worth every little penny - we completely rate this 💯% and will be recommending it to everyone!
