I think this place is starting to trade on its reputation, the seafood is good but the service is well below par and some of the portions are tiny considering the prices.

We discovered this place 8 years ago during a camping trip. We now visit whenever we are in the area. The food is amazing without exception, the service is friendly and efficient and the pub is dog friendly. Can't recommend highly enough. We stayed at The Anchor for a couple of nights, while we explored the coast and walked that part of the South Coast Path. We loved staying there. Our room, room 1, was spacious and comfortable. We liked that we didn't have to go through the pub to gain access, once we'd collected the key. We think we were above part of the restuarant- but heard no noise from there. Breakfast was fantastic- a real treat. I stay in lots of hotels (for work) and try not to have a full English to often but I was glad I picked this occasion to have it. I think it was the best I've ever had! The staff were friendly and we ate in the restuarant, which does fantastic seafood including crab and lobster. Worth giving them a call to book a table in advance. The location is excellent. We will definitely be recommending to our friends.

Starters of mussels and a large fresh crab cake followed by fresh Sea bass and a cold crab salad and fries and a warm spicy crab with triple cooked chips. The flavours and freshness were superb. We thoroughly enjoyed this recommended restaurant. The only point to make was perhaps a side boat for the sticky crab sauce would be better as it did swamp the crab. The staff did there best with cover after cover and it was lovely to see people enjoying their dinners. We certainly did.

We met up with a group of family members in the Anchor last weekend. I hadn't booked it, so didn't know quite what to expect food-wise. Thought it would be the usual "pub-grub". Well, what a marvellous surprise - the food was absolutely outstanding. I had sea bass with crab smashed potato etc and it was really delicious. This pub doesn't shout loudly enough about its great food - pleasantly surprised as I thought it was a village boozer. Not a bit of it. Lovely decor - tables in different room bits so very covid safe. The beef, nut roast and pork belly - and the sea bass - were all much praised. We had this booked a few months in advance as we were staying with friends who own a holiday property nearby, and they just couldn’t say enough about how good the food was. They were right and in no way was I disappointed. We all ordered roasts as it was Sunday, all which were locally sourced according to the menu. Each come with an assortment of fresh veggies superbly cooked and with meat that was just melt in the mouth. Each roast dinner came with a beautiful Yorkshire pudding (I’d love to know you’re secret) not reserved for just the beef. Forgot to mention I tried the oysters as my starter which just tasted like it had just come from the sea. Unfortunately the only downside was there was no space for pudding so I will try next time, because I am definitely coming to try something else again. The staff were friendly snd helpful but in no way intrusive. It was excellent home cooked food and good value for money.

For starters two of us had the mussels, which were delicious and my husbands had the scallops which he rated very highly. There were three of us and we all enjoyed our main meals albeit being far from perfect. I had the lemon sole which was burnt on the top, my husband had surf and turf but the lobster was a bit on the chewy side. My granddaughter had the sticky crab which she found difficult to deal with.Saying all that everything else was absolutely fine and if we come back to the area we would probably go again. They get very busy so it’s best to book a reservation.

I can't believe the 1 star review May 2021 below is this Anchor Inn they are talking about! We stumbled upon this pub having driven past whilst visiting the area this week. We saw the sign outside that they specialise in fish and seafood so looked at the menu on line and decided to book a table the next night. We turned up early to have a drink before hand and were able to sit in the bar area. The menu is extensive and all local produce used. The fish was very fresh, the choice on the menu is varied and covers all tastes, hard to chose as I could have ordered every dish but we both decided on the coconut laksa which was so tasty and lots of lovely fish and seafood in it. As fish/seafood lovers, it was heaven.....The peanut cheesecake was to die for.As for the service, both female staff who served us were very friendly, very attentive and very helpful. We later found out that the owner was one of the waiters which shows and proves the commitment put into this very well run establishment. I understand she trained at the Savoy in London and that definitely shines through. We can't wit to return to the area, just so we can visit this fabulous pub again for another wonderful meal. Although we don't have a dog, dogs are welcome and they even have doggie treats behind the bar for them.Thank you for a wonderful post lockdown treat.

We popped into The Anchor during our stay in Burton Bradstock last week and I am so pleased that we did. The two members of staff serving myself and my partner were helpful and attentive without overdoing it. We both went for the burger which was topped with pulled pork, and came with chips and salad. Although it wasn't on the cheap side (£15) I must say it was excellent and I felt very much worth the money. The burger was juicy, the pork incredibly tasty and the salad crisp and fresh. The ales on tap were good quality, and even though it was a quiet night there, the atmosphere still felt comfortable and cosy. The pub has lovely decor, lots of different seating areas and the toilets and communal areas were all clean and well kept (things that you notice far more these days). I would highly recommend calling in at The Anchor, whenever you next get the chance. A warm welcome and superb food. Hope this fantastic pub survives these tough times.

We got a warm welcome from this cosy pub with a warm fire blazing on a chilly autumn night. Unfortunately because this is a small Pub the tables are quite close together. There are some nice choices on the menu plus some fish specials. I went for stuffed salmon parcels to start and fish pie for mains. The starter comprised a slice of gravlax with a couple of prawns rolled inside. Nice enough but not what I was expecting. The pie appeared in a tradition roasting tin, nicely browned, although it was mostly mash potato with a few bits of fish. Again it was okay but lacked any real flavour.Prices are on the high-side but I understand this this on-par for this area.

Duck breast mains - skin wasn’t crispy, lacked flavour and didn’t really go with passion fruit sauce. I think the seeds should have been removed as it was rather crunchy. The later two who ordered mushroom and stilton en croits, got a bowl of mushrooms in cream. A complaint rendered an extra small bowl of cream with stilton. No crust available. Chef said she did not know the dish was on the menu, which is no excuse to send out the aweful mush. However for me the crab and prawn cocktail starter, followed by scollops on black pudding was wonderful. In these troubled times we have to make allowances, that said stick to the chalk board dish of the day. No desserts. £105 all in plus tip.

We have eaten here in the past year and it was very good. This time it was also very good. The staff were attentive, positive, enthusiastic but maybe a little erratic in the actual delivery of the food to the table.Good food, great atmosphere but the observation we all made(6 of us) was the seating and tables were no differently positioned prior to the covid pandemic!!!Tables were too close(uncomfortably) and to still have the specials board displayed in such a way that to view them you needed to stand over other patrons tables to view the choices was wrong. The space inside the pub is limited on a normal day....and we were all too close to other guests....no social distancing to note but the staff were masked.I guess that if it were nicely spaced out so that patrons felt distanced from each other then the pub would only get minimal covers throughout the day and would prove a difficult financial return.Food was good though.

You always know when you've found a good one from the look and feel of the outside. Called first though from the front to see if they had a table... sadly full. However, years of begging and pleading do pay off sometimes and they relented and said they 'might' be able to squeeze us in.Boom! Within five minutes we were given a table and the treat started. The 'specials' board looked amazing - if the seafood platter had been available we would have gone for that - but the range and quality of the rest of the menu was ample. Mrs Colin had a cracking bowl of mussels, really fresh and I had a lovely pigeon breast starter. Mains were a huge portion of sea bass - one fillet of which remains in the fridge for imminent consumption - and I had the duck. It was an unusual presentation - much less well done than elsewhere but equally succulent - but it was excellent and taught me that there is always a new take on a favourite... if you are in a good restaurant.Service was very attentive, no issue at all for a 'take home' box and good pricing. Its a old coaching inn so the issues of covid-19 distancing would always be a challenge but there has clearly been a lot of thought put into the flows and whilst you need to exit for the toilets, its a small price to pay for personal safety. Thank you.Thoroughly recommended.

Booked an evening meal here as special holiday treat.Originally booked it as part of ‘Eat out to help out’ scheme but discovered via Facebook it had decided not to participate, despite this we decided to still go as food is always delicious, this was no exception, limited menu choice, but nevertheless amazing. My main concern was lack of social distancing between people and tables.Table we sat at may have been 2 metres apart when vacant but definitely not when sat down, our back’s touched table behind back’.Hand gel on entry and one way in and one way out helped, but you had to walk to bar to book in with other people dining there.Service was great, reasonably priced.

What can I say but, Amazing. Very friendly staff with fantastic food. They do not do the government scheme but that was said when ordering and it didn't bother us. They confirmed the booking via text earlier today, never had that before. Highly recommended.

Very tasty food and good value. Staff were lovely and took all the necessary steps to manage the Covid risk without it dominating the meal. Great pub in a very pretty setting

We decided to have a meal out and having been to the Anchor before booked a table for two having had excellent service and food before. We arrived on time and were greeted with a smile from the eyes. (face masks were worn by all staff) Having been shown to our table we were given sufficient time to peruse the menu and the specials board. In the meantime we ordered and received our drinks. Hospitality at the Anchor is first class and Andrea and Katie were very helpful. Nothing is too much trouble. On this occasion l had a starter of pan fried pigeon with black pudding Bon Bon and a truffle mayonnaise , very light and very moorish. My partner decided not to have a starter instead saving herself for one of their delicious deserts. For the main course my partner had the pork and l had the rib-eye with scallops. Both meals cooked to perfection by Nathan the chef. My partner had just enough room for Eton mess where l choose the cheeseboard. My partner thoroughly enjoyed her desert ,sadly the cheeseboard was a let down, can’t win them all. Overall it was still a very enjoyable evening and l would definitely recommend this establishment. Make sure you book to avoid being disappointed.

We ate as a family of four with two young girls and a dog, the waitress who served us was so lovely and welcoming and our food excellent. Everything was taken care of and all Covid guidelines were adhered to without making the meal feel different in any way. Definitely recommend and Thankyou to the team for such a lovely evening!

We had a delicious prawn sandwich in the garden when we arrived and also dinner, which we had booked 2 weeks before, later in the week. Very good service and both had a delicious fish curry. Extremely diligent about taking details of home post code and telephone. Would have been nice to visit more often but booking is limited

From the time of ordering, to the time our food came out was 1hour 40minutes, the staff made every excuse under the sun and were dismissive of it being their fault. We booked as two separate families, we sat on separate tables, ordered separately, and ate separately yet when it came to paying our bill was joint, when we questioned it the staff said ‘can’t you just pay 50/50?’ When we said no, they became extremely irritated. We then noticed that the bill had a number of drinks on there which we did not order, again the staff were completely rude and dismissive about this. All they kept saying was ‘it’s not our fault, we’re short staffed’. Extremely poor customer service. This was our first meal out since lockdown and it was ruined by bad service. Such a shame

Lovely food and superb service under very trying COVID conditions. There was a strict one way system and you had to "serve yourself" from trays, but the serving staff managed it well. Delicious fish and scallops. Wear hat/sunscreen as there is little shade.

Visited The Anchor a couple of days ago with my partner and it was amazing! I had Hake and chips with mushy peas and my partner had the Lobster dish, both meals were incredible. We then had a cheese board for pudding and I had Baboo Honeycomb ice cream which was divine. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. We have already told friends and family to go here and we cannot wait to return!

Arrived for our reservation at 6pm on Sunday & we were given the menus to find out it was very limited. Half of the party ordered the roast dinner and the other half went for fish and chips. Roast dinner..., what a disappointment! Watered down gravy(brown water), 3 potatoes. Luke warm gravy & meat that was absent of taste.. fish and chips was not too bad, besides the portion which was minuscule in contrast with the price. Service was okay at first but no one even checked back on us. We had high expectations but they definitely did not live up to it. Extremely over priced in my opinion. Would not come back. I think they need to rethink their prices and menu.

We called ahead to book as the pub is advertised as taking part in the “Eat out to Help Out” scheme but they aren’t taking bookings because it’s their pizza & pie night. No problem, we get there just before 6 to make sure we can get a table, sit down and order at the bar. Half an hour later find out that despite being on the gov website as part of the scheme they’re not doing it. Very frustrating and left with hungry children as we were on a tight holiday budget and chose this place as it was supposed to be in the scheme! It might have been useful if they had put a sign up or informing customers at the bar that they aren’t doing the discount.

What a disappointment. Arrived 5 minutes early for our table. Waited for 10 minutes without acknowledgement at the bar to check in.Despite all the right signage in place, very little regard to social distancing, people standing at and ordering from the bar, a pointless one way system with people wandering in and out to the toilets at their will.But....the icing on the cake....after our order being taken we overheard another family being told that the pub was not participating in the government ‘eat out to help out’ scheme, despite currently being advertised on the government participants website. Apparently it was all a mistake and they never registered themselves and should have been taken off. Mmmm strange as it’s not an automatic scheme, you have to choose to register. After finally agreeing to honour the deal we were told that their brewery had registered them without asking, Mmmm also strange as they purport to be a free house. However mistakes do happen, but for a manager to be overheard saying she wasn’t interested and “you can’t please everyone” whilst she was “too busy” in the kitchen to deal with complaints and allow her young and clearly out of their depth staff to handle it all seems a little unfair. The food, when it eventually arrived was pleasant. However the whole experience left a sour taste and we would not be prepared to attempt another visit.Badly managed with untrained staff seen to be running around like headless chickens, both front and back of house. Needs direction and leadership.

Our 4th visit to The Anchor due to the sublime seafood and we were not disappointed. The sauce with the fish platter was particularly delicious. We were slightly overwhelmed by the large family groups talking loudly, planning their activities between the 2 tables in our room, but accepted that situation being school holidays.

Disappointing visit after a recommendation for the following reasons:Firstly, We felt the COVID precautions were not good enough, on entry we had to pass through a small, quite crowded room to access our table. There was no screen in place at the bar and we had to read the blackboard specials board which is placed directly above the bar in very close proximity to other diners. Some of the staff were wearing masks correctly, others weren’t. Also, the menus were being shared between all tables.Secondly, we both had the mushroom starter which had some very tough, stringy stalks and lacked any flavour. We had the fillet steak which was ok and the crab & prawn linguine supposed to be with sourdough but was ordinary sliced bread. Again, this lacked any flavour and had difficulty finding the crab. There are many other good eating establishments in the area that are better value for money with tastier food.

Was able to book for an evening meal for 4 people so that was good. But the service was slow, they managed to get the order wrong and added an extra drink to the bill! The portions are generous and the meals varied and tasty. We are due to go back to the area in September but will not be visiting The Anchor Inn for a meal, maybe just a drink or two.

Visited whilst on holiday for a friend's birthday. We had already decided what we were having after looking at the menu online, until we arrived at the venue that is. We have never seen such an array of specials, mainly fish and seafood, which we were more than happy with. Between us we had scallops, fish platter, crab, sea bass and everything was perfection on a plate and so fresh and well presented, best scallops I have ever tasted and the sauce was superb. The staff were friendly, attentive and made us feel so welcome and very safe with the covid procedures in place. They even brought out a complimentary dessert with a sparkler for the birthday boy. Thank you for an amazing experience, will definitely visit again when in the area.

Although the staff were friendly they were very slow. Our 8.30 reservation meant the restaurant wasn't busy by the time we were ready to order. The specials being written all along the top wall make social distancing difficult as you're forced to hover around the bar and read them, blocking the path through the restaurant. On the subject of specials, it would perhaps be more prudent to slim down the selection in favour of quality. I ordered exclusively from the selection of specials and found the starter of scallops paltry with 3 very small fish and a spoonful of salad the roe had been left on, possibly to create an illusion of size. My main course arrived incorrect but I was then informed the dish I had ordered had run out which seems convenient. I was provided with a very poor imitation of moules marinière which was completely flavourless save for a huge clump of thyme on top. Very expensive and disappointing overall.

The top of our to do list once places started reopening was to go for a meal at The Anchor Inn. As always the food, service and staff were first class. They have worked hard to create a relaxed feeling, but observing the rules meticulously- well done. We had one of the fish special dishes and it was superb. Our friends hadn’t been before and loved the food and appreciated the great setting. The only downside of visiting is the regret that you have to leave, you couldn’t eat more and you need to wait to come back. How I wish this was my local!

Amazing food and great service. We had the half lobster and two steaks with scallops - all of the food served was top notch. The pub is fully COVID organised and the staff are top notch. Don’t bother with the Hive which is overpriced and average at best, go here instead. Best pub I have eaten in for a long time.

We took our Yorkshire friends to this beautiful inn in Burton Bradstock. We were met by a friendly member of staff and shown to our pre booked table. Having perused the menu we were informed that the “specials” were listed above the bar. Renowned for its fresh seafood it shouldn’t go unnoticed that the there is also a great variety of other quality dishes. I had the Korean sticky ribs as a starter, mouth watering pork ribs with a sauce with a hint of heat. This was followed by one of the specials, seafood platter. This was an experience of culinary delight, highly recommended for those with a hearty appetite. As l said it’s not all seafood with two of our group having the Belly pork, succulent melt in the mouth . We all agreed it was a gastronomic experience. Paul and his staff had made the inn COVID-19 safe and the slightly strange, but very important use of masks by the staff did not detract from a very enjoyable evening. Pre book, especially at this time is essential so if you are in the area l will guarantee you , whatever you chose, an culinary experience you will remember.
