Think we went on an off day as reviews do not match our experience. Three of us had shepherds pie special and all said it was slop, they gave us a spoon to eat it with, hardly any meat in it. The chefs veg was just mangetout, no other veg, generous amount, but that was it no matter what you ordered. Lasagne portion small. Friends said burgers and fish and chips were really good. Rhubarb crumble was slop too. No substance to it, Friend ordered crumble with cream but was then told no cream and chef had put custard on it so did she want it or not???? No, there is no cream would you like something else with it. Service really slow but lady by herself and she did a really good job, because she was on her own we didn’t complain and because we waited so long for our dinner didn’t want to wait any longer.

A long overdue return visit to this popular Canewdon pub. Sadly it wasn`t very busy for our midweek lunch. Our choices of Fish Pie and Prime Burger were well presented and piping hot. A couple of pints of Wibblers Apprentice rounded off a very nice pub lunch.

OMG - fantastic food delivered locally. I had the king prawn Thai red curry. It was the best I’ve ever had. Tonnes of prawns, red peppers and mushrooms. Plenty of jasmine rice, vegetable spring rolls and prawn crackers. My husband had the ribs, chips salad & coleslaw. Equally as delicious. The food arrived on time as was piping hot. Never disappointed.

I was very impressed with the cleanliness & sanitising. The tables were well spaced out.The pub has a lovely atmosphere & parts of it go back to the 13th century. The staff were friendly & attentive. The food was perfect. There were 3 of us & we all had a different main course & a different dessert. All of us said our meals were delicious & we cannot wait to go back again. Compliments to Lee , the chef.

Went for a family lunch on Saturday. Good choice of main meals and also smaller lunch menu - sandwiches etc. Three of us ate and all the food was great. Tasty, good portion size and well cooked with fresh salad on the side. Also the pub had a very nice friendly atmosphere with the open fire burning on a cold day. I'll be happy to pop back for an evening meal rather than travelling further afield.

Lovely food, friendly service. We popped in for dinner and had all three courses, all courses were cooked perfectly, great portion size and came with a smiling, friendly and polite service. Good wine choices and reasonable prices. Looking forward to going back, so pleased this my local pub. Hope it is continued to be supported.

Called in on Saturday lunchtime as we heard the pub was serving food again. Ordered two burger meals and a linguini carbonara. All meals arrived at the same time and were piping hot. Burgers were huge but we ate them all and the pasta was tasty with lots of bacon. Reasonable price and good service. Will definitely make it a regular thing. Was going to book for Sunday lunch but couldn’t get a table so advise booking in advance.

Well done lee what a successful few days for reopened restaurant. The menu, even though a taster menu, is varied and plenty to choose from. lee has tirelessly spent the last year revamping the kitchen and putting his own mark as a chef in the pub. Couldn't have asked for a better start to the restaurant opening..

We've been waiting patiently for the restaurant to reopen and it was worth the wait. Everything was fine for six of us for lunch today (Sunday). Nice bright surroundings, great food, hot plates, good service, and friendly atmosphere. Will come again.

Hooray! Food again at The Anchor! Only the2nd day but hubby & I decided to pop in for a spot of lunch. We both opted for the burger and we weren’t disappointed. The relish and pickles were deelish. Portion was just right. The lady who served us was very accommodating and lovely. Nothing would be too much trouble. We’ve booked for Valentines and can’t wait! Can I make a tiny suggestion? With the fish and chips could you offer a choice of peas or mushy peas? I’m a pea hater unfortunately, but love mushy peas!

The Anchor Inn is finally up and running, serving food again. This was only a tester menu to iron out any teething problems. Well if that is the case, can’t wait to return when Lee considers the kitchen up and fully running. The choices were varied and everything our party consumed was amazing. Flavours fully complementing each other. Portion size was ideal and very reasonably priced. Can’t wait for my next visit.

We tried so hard to like the food in this, our local pub after new management took it over but we were constantly disappointed. We persevered thinking it can only improve and as it's our local, we should support it so we went in maybe every other Friday evening, sometimes every week. The food was hit and miss, sometimes a small portion, sometimes better and the last time we went in there, 2 dinners were actually burnt so hard it was difficult to even cut the lamb. The clientele got less and less each time we visited, which says a lot. I think they tried hard to get it right but never managed it.

Called here in passing around 3pm on a weekday and pleasantly surprised to see the picturesque setting and the fact that it still serves food out of the core dining hours. Although the place has different lunch and dinner menus in between these times it does have a cut back version of a menu to enable the kitchen to prepare for the evening setting.

Went here today for lunch and so glad we did, I had the roast chicken and my husband had the lamb. Both were absolutely delicious, the chicken was amazing and the vegetables were really fresh and perfectly cooked. This is a local village pub with lots of locals but as "outsiders" we was really made to feel welcome, excellent service and delicious food will definitely be back!

Having moved to Canewdon a couple of years ago, the only thing that spoilt village life for us was that there was not a decent pub in the village. To be fair, there was a pub - but the caged Parrot in the bar - and copious amounts of 'Halloween' tat adorning the bar meant that it was a 'haunt' for the dedicated few; rather than for the village as a whole.

The Smugglers is a great old traditional Pub in Hullbridge. Truly a hidden gem near the River. Beer prices are reasonable & Max the Bar Manager is epic works like 3 people behind the bar 🍻. Great venue with live music played most weekends.

On our second visit we were pleasantly surprised that the soup was wonderful. When we visited a year ago, the soup was far to spicy which is why we didn't return for a year.

Food disgusting I ordered lasagne it was swimming in an oily liquid, garlic bread limp and oily, salad was shrivelled, my husband order liver & bacon, liver hard as it was overcooked the meal was swimming in gravy. Very disappointing would never go back or recommend.

I originally intended to go elsewhere but they were super busy so my friend suggested The Waeccer. We walked in without a booking and the lady eagerly found us both somewhere to sit, despite not making a reservation. We both ordered the roast and it came to the table within 20 minutes, piping hot and well presented. It tasted fantastic. I ordered an apple crumble for dessert. This also arrived quickly, served hot. Everything was brilliant for our visit and I will be returning again based on this visit. Can't fault The Waeccer at all. Excellent in every aspect.
