Great sandwiches, very quick & friendly staff!

Used to come here all the time as a student. Food is fantastic and the guys who run it are very quick and professional. Hadn’t been back for 3-4 years or so and the gentleman who rings up your order and always has a kind smile recognized me and was as generous of spirit as ever. Made me feel very welcome back in Oxford!

Unless you want a pre-made supermarket sandwich, you must pay at LEAST £4 for a sandwich in Oxford. The Alternative Tuck Shop has prices similar to upmarket chains such as Pret-a-Manger, but the sandwiches here are made to order, to your requirements (e.g. I usually want some salad filling, but without tomato), and the sandwiches are bigger, with more filling. As lots of other reviews have said; service here is swift, efficient, and friendly, there is a very wide choice of fillings and a wide choice of breads (e.g. plain, olive, or tomato ciabatta). There's a good reason why there is usually a line of people outside the door.

Small and busy shop for take out sandwiches, pastries and a few other options. Great prices too. I bought a hummus with falafel bagel, croissant, apple strudel and veggie samosa.

Best sandwich shop on planet earth!!! I came with my boyfriend upon his recommendation (oxford regular) and I had the best sandwich ever. I need them to expand to the rest of UK! I had sausage, Brie and cranberry sauce which was incredible as well as the best chicken samosa ever. 10/10

A small shop with efficient staff delivering quick friendly customer service. Ordered a halal chicken vegetable panini - yum.

Just moved to Oxford and this place was recommended to me. Olive ciabatta was absolutely beautiful I got there around 12.05 and there was already a long queue, but they are very fast and the wait isn't that long. Will be back again soon to taste other options, both hot and cold!

As a student, I had heard so much about about this place. Even without the inflated expectations, the sandwhich was fairly standard and more expensive than better competitors (see covered market).

I found the cheapest place to get a sandwich and so did everyone else 😂 Went there at peak time (lunchtime) and of course it was extremely busy with a queue out the door and it got very hot in there, however the staff where extremely friendly and I got the salmon salad baguette and it was lovely, the roll was crunchy and the sauce just worked. Definitely recommended

A must try in Oxford. The olive ciabatta was very fluffy, and the satay chicken I ordered was very filling (a little sweet tho). It's good for a quick meal, although there is a queue, it will be ready in a few minutes.

Highly recommend, ate here dozens of times, very friendly staff, infinitely customisable sandwiches and great sweets/desserts.

I often stop here for a sandwich, the bread they use is fantastic and they are stuffed full so its great value and the guys who work there are all really nice. Big queues on weekday lunchtimes confirm it's the best place around, but it moves quickly as the staff work very fast!

I came here because of my friend’s recommendation. Ordered chicken satay and Mexican chicken in ciabatta and olive ciabatta. I must say they were amazing, and different (in a positive way)! They also have many options such as vege, falafel, tuna, salmon and egg. The queue is usually long but don’t worry, because their service is very fast. Just make sure you make up your mind about what to order before you reach your turn. Price is student-friendly, the portion is quite big. Only chicken is halal. I really thankful to my friend for recommending this place. Definitely will come back again for great sandwiches in Oxford!

Amazing foods at low prices! One thing to remember is bring some cash as their minimum amount for card payment is 5 pounds :(

An Oxford student classic. Cheap, filling and tasty sandwiches!

Simply the best place in town in terms of quality and service. Friendliest people ever. No one is even close. Ask for the olive ciabatta or baguettes, you can't go wrong.

One of my favourites in Oxford. Absolutely fantastic sandwich, ciabattas, paninis, rolls, cakes, etc. with a great choice of fillings. The place is perfect for breakfast and lunch. The ingredients are very fresh and tasty. While the queue can get very long during the university terms as it is very popular with students, the service is quite fast and doesn't take very long.

Classic, Old school sandwich shop. I had chicken pesto baguette. Tasty, nearly £4 for a baguette however l but that's inflation in the current world. The taste justified the price. 👍🏼

Super popular little deli shop across the way from New College. So popular and beloved, in fact, I spent an entire summer thinking its name was "The BEST Alternative Tuck Shop" when it is in fact simply the Alternative Tuck Shop. That's just what my instructors, who visit every year, called it. An in-and-out sort of eatery, it's fun to grab a sandwich and take it to any of the nearby green or historical spaces Oxford has to offer. I recall them having a fairly large selection of sandwiches, some with international flair, on fresh, crusty bread. They're very popular so it's not uncommon to see a line winding out onto the street, but they handled all my orders quickly and professionally, so it's generally worth the wait -- it probably won't be as long as you imagine, anyway!

Very friendly service, don't be put off if there's a queue these guys work fast! Great fresh bread for sandwiches, all made to order and they are massive. Good quality and great value.

If I am working at the library or something this is where I go for lunch. It’s always fast and a decent amount of food for a really good price. I usually get chicken satay on plain ciabatta. Only thing is it’s cash only under £5 and most of their sandwiches are less than that so make sure to bring cash.

Especially like tikka/pesto/spicy chicken in either panini or ciabatta. Hot croissant in the morning also very good. Other sweet treats are too sweet for me.

We found this shop by accident and I'm so glad we did. The best sandwich we have had in ages!! You can choose the bread, filing pretty much everything. The menu is huge and the guys in the shop are very speedy and efficient. I would highly recommend this shop it's a little gem

This is by far easily the best sandwich tuck shop I've ever visited and I've visited a lot. The man behind the cash register is quick, friendly and can even recommend menu items. They've never messed up an order they remember exactly who ordered what, and unlike other sandwich shops in Oxford have never made a mistake in all the times I've frequented it. Not to mention the range of ciabatta is excellent; olive, tomato, plain etc. The fillings are the most diverse and tasty in Oxford, and it's so reasonably priced. As an avid sandwich shop customer, one thing that impressed me is that paninis and hot ciabattas are basted with olive oil before put on the hot press which gives it a crisp finish and ensures the product is not soggy. A minor detail but one that for me makes all the difference. If you're in Oxford go here, not taylors.

Great food and awesome service. The master panini creator Bam Bam and Magic Johnson doing coffees, it's the dream team right there. Great cakes, my personal fav... olive ciabatta, mexican chicken, cheese, toasted lightly with a salad... Wash down with their unique coffee and instant nirvana Recommend them 💯

Best bagels and wraps in town. Pro tip for the law nerds: occasionally you can find Prof Craig picking up a lox bagel after lectures.

Really convenient lunch - good range of options from very simple cheese and ham to lovely things like hummus and roast veg. Service was fast, despite a short queue. Staff were friendly and my baguette was lovely.

Lovely sandwich shop with generous amount of filling and bread!! I love that we get to choose whoch bread we want and there are so many choices for filling that are all very reasonable price :)!! It will be great of the bread could be warm as well but other than that all good :)! If they can make some non sugar deserts I think it will be even better :)!

cheap little place doing fast takeaway sandwiches, with queues normally heading out the door of hungry oxford students. My only qualms are the slightly strict opening times (closed on weekends) and the £5 minimum charge for using a card. Recommend the turkey panini!

Great sandwiches. Even when busy, service is fast. Sweets and pastries are not so good though. Also 5 pound limit on cards is really annoying.

There's probably some artisan place with better bread, but this is where the ordinary people go. At lunchtime it's almost always packed with students and other people who work nearby, but the queue moves VERY quickly, so even at the busiest times you can get your baguette in under 10 minutes. Fillings are diverse and prices low. The people there are friendly and they know regulars, but chances are you won't be chatting to them much during peak hour. They have a bunch of desserts too, although those can be a little hit and miss, in my experience. Unlike the sandwiches, which are always a hit.
