Great sandwiches and cakes with beautiful scenic views of the cathedral. Dog friendly with outdoor seating. Prices are moderately.

This cafe is located within the Cathedral grounds, attached to the side of a small but very nice garden. We came just after 11am but weren't allowed to sit outside for some reason even though the weather was very pleasant. We were found a table in the crypt and had nice hot drinks and a super piece of date and walnut cake.

I used to visit whenever in Ely and called again last month. It was very busy and we were shown to the under croft. having ordered tea and a toasted teacake,we sat to wait. The noise was overbearing. Voices were echoing around the hard stone arches. Whe the teacake arrived it was barely warm. The number of staff was insufficient for the number of patrons and they have my sympathy as they were under huge pressure. I felt the prices were higher than they should have been and overall we decided to look elsewhere next time we visit Eley

We had seen this restaurant on a previous visit to Ely, but not eaten there. So on this visit we thought we would have coffee and cakes. We were lucky that the sun was shining so was able to sit in the gardens with a lovely view of the cathedral. It reminded us of the olde worlde tea rooms in the 1960/70's. The young staff were friendly and efficient. It was a peaceful haven away from the busy roads in town. We would definitely return there on our next visit to Ely (from Brighton, Sussex!).

How long does it take to be served with 2 Coffees and 2 shortbread biscuits? Well, at least 40 minutes at The Almonry. ! I wanted to love this place, a quintessential English garden with a fantastic view of Ely’s breathtakingly beautiful Cathedral, well laid out on a lawn with tables and umbrellas. But here’s the thing. The staff don’t seem to have realised what it takes to serve us customers. On entering, We were told to sit anywhere, which we did, and sat patiently in the sunshine waiting for someone to take our small coffee time order. We waited and waited, and despite making eye contact with the waiting staff, no one approached us to ask what we wanted. I had to walk up to the ‘greeting’ desk, the gathering point for the staff, and eventually someone did come to take our order. We waited in eager anticipation of our morning coffee which unfortunately failed to arrive. Staff sauntered around clearing the odd table and re-arranging the chairs, seeming unaware and oblivious to the fact that we were still waiting. Eventually, getting increasingly frustrated with my wait, and being ignored by the staff, I walked into the restaurant, and up to the coffee area, where I enquired as to the whereabouts of our order. The staff preparing the coffee orders seemed non-plussed, checked their screen, and (following the penny dropping), said ‘We’ll bring it right out to you’…!! 10 minutes later, accompanied by profuse apologies, the order appeared. It had obviously been overlooked somewhere along the line. Now here’s the thing!! Was our experience a one off? Apparently not. Other reviewers have more for less said the same thing, about the indifferent attitude and performance of the staff. My bill (without my asking) was reduced by 50%, which was an acknowledgment of the issue, but not what I wanted. I just wanted a timely cup of coffee. Whether the management will note these constructively made and factual comments remains to be seen. I hope so. In the meantime, if you are a potential customer, I hope you won’t be in too much of a hurry!!!

Long time since I visited this place for food and I was disappointed. The sandwiches on offer were boring. I had tuna and mayonnaise. It came with chives on the menu but I declined them. The tuna was poor quality. Not flaky chunky pieces, a mush. With lovely bakeries in Ely why was the bread such poor quality? No malted seeded etc. Yes, The view is lovely but I would not go to eat there again. Coffee was ok. Sophie served us and was lovely.

Visited the tearooms this afternoon as family/friends of 5. We were advised they were full but that we could wait for a table, which we agreed to do. Several other (larger) parties came in who also waited, however there was no system to the waiting and 2 other parties were given a table before us, which was a little frustrating. Once seated and looking at the menu I noticed it was a Sunday menu (it wasn't Sunday!) And asked about this, i was advised the chef had called in sick and this was a limited menu. We were not very happy with this as menu as the choice was much reduced, however as already seated we decided to stay. We ordered 3 x jacket potatoes - 2 served ok but 1 cold . 1 x pulled pork bun - this was tiny (size of a mcdonalds hamburger) and very disappointing and a mozzarella/tomato pasta (tasteless). No desserts or hot drinks offered, basically ignored by staff. We didn't want to cause a scene so paid the bill and left. As I was leaving a young female waitress shouted 'excuse me, have you paid', I was quite taken a back but replied that yes I had paid, she then asked me 'was I sure', this was in front of an awful lot of people and was very embarrassing. I went to what appeared to be the till point to prove i has paid with my receipt (wholly embarrassed by this point) to be casually told it was the servers error. At this point, without any apology, we left. Definitely won't be returning here.

Firstly the positive - beautiful setting and nice decor. Then it goes down hill. Arrived for lunch with my daughter and 18 month grandson. Shown to a room and told our table is behind the door and he promptly left us to be seated and no other communication, never asked if we needed a high chair which were available, just outside the room we was seated in, No menus given- although these were on the table. We waited about 15 minutes for the waitress to arrive. However, staff had been in waiting on other tables with no acknowledgment to ourselves and they looked very unimpressed with serving other customers. When the waitress arrived we asked if there was a children’s menu. Only to be advised that it was the same menu just half the portion. As there wasn’t anything suitable and no offer of providing a more simplified meal we decided to leave. I was extremely disappointed that this was the case. We felt it would be a lovely place and setting to eat, but clearly not for families. Such a shame that this venue doesn’t value all! We then went to a different restaurant where I think it would be a good idea to send their staff to see how service should be done.

Your staff need intense customer service training. We arrived to be met by a flustered man at the door who had zero smile & greeting. Come back at 1 pm he said ! We duly arrived back at one on the dot , no one on the door so we stood there waiting to be seated. After we eventually got our table, no one came to take the order, you would be better putting numbers on the tables & letting customers go to order themselves! We looked around & I fetched a young lad over, he said , we have been very busy! Not acceptable I’m afraid. Waited quite a while for our food, which was very nice, the glass for our mineral water was however hot, must have just been washed. You need to have some better systems in place & allocate a set of certain tables to one person instead of staff just wandering about . Also a follow up visit to customers to check on any requirements & if the food is good. There were a lot of customers I noticed looking around while seated at tables, that body language indicates they require something. Also , you need to have a decent float in your till, I was short changed as a result of no coins in it! Will not be going again I’m afraid.

We reserved a table for 4 of us. We stood in a queue outside for 20 minutes, we were then shown to our table waiting for the other two family members to arrive. We waited and waited until a waitress appeared to take our order then 45 minutes passed with no drinks. The waitress appeared flushed and apologised saying we could have the drinks for free. Fair enough. 45 minutes after no main course. My daughter left the table to find the waitress who said it wasn’t on the system. The food appeared 20 minutes after that. By the time we finished our food the restaurant had emptied and the kitchen had closed. Our next course and the waitress had failed to materialise again. We told another very apologetic waitress who was clearing that we were leaving as we had really had enough. She went to call her supervisor who took another 10 minutes to arrive. The supervisor apologised and waived the bill. She said they were very busy outside. We mentioned we found our waitress chatting when we were forgotten. We are so disappointed as this was a special family meeting. Yes we didn’t have to pay but it was an awful experience, not to be repeated. Better planning, more staff and someone to meet and greet at busy times.

The food in the restaurant is good, but I can't understand in this day and age why they don't have any booking system on line and don't respond to emails. Surely it must be better to know how many covers they are going to have in the restaurant, so they can react accordingly. Tried to book today. Had emailed as there wasn't any booking system on line; no response to that email from yesterday, and had to call about 4 different times and when did get through, told just walk ins. Disappointing.

The Almonry is a traditional restaurant for light lunches, with a cathedral attached. It has a period charm about it which sets it above most of the places in Ely. There are plenty of outdoor tables in the garden for a fine day. The staff are extremely polite and helpful, although occasionally difficult to find. The light meal we had -- tea/coffee and Coronation chicken baked spud -- was a long time coming, and the spud was cold. The tiny pat of butter never melted. We only got a small jug of milk between us for a pot of tea and a large coffee. As a result the actual food and drink were disappointing.

The Almonry is the official café and restaurant attached to Ely Cathedral, and is located within the cathedral's grounds (behind the building). It's small, picturesque café that you can relax at after a visit to this magnificent church. Seating out- and inside is limited, so during peak times you'll probably have to queue for a while to get in. It seems easier to find a table outside, if you're willing to deal with the wasps in the garden, of which there are many. There's a board that warns you of that at the entrance to the café. I found this to be no issue at all, but if you're allergic, avoid the garden. The food menu is mainly confined to various cold and warm sandwiches, which aren't exactly cheap, but good. I had the "Pulled Pork Brioche Burger", which was nice, and it came with a side salad and a dollop of sour apple jam, which greatly added to the flavour of the burger (It's served separately). Yo can also pick from a variety of desserts. Generally good and very friendly service. If you're a beer lover, you're out of luck though: Only a bottle of the dreaded Sharpe's Doom Bar is on the menu.

I have written many reviews on Tripadvisor and have never felt the need to leave a terrible review. This is the first one. These people simply should not be in business. After a warm welcome by the young man on reception, we were taken to a vaunted ceiling area. There the issues started. 3 waitresses went past: did not not stop, not even when signalled to. We eventually had to walk back to Reception to get the young man who had greeted us to take our order. One course arrived first, leaving three of us waiting. When I asked the blonde waitress, the response was that she did not deal with drinks or cream teas, as they came from a different part of the restaurant! I chased another waitress, who brought the remaining meals. No drinks though! So another round of getting up and chasing the waiter. Drinks eventually brought by another waitress who said they had been happily cooling on the side as forgotten by the first waitress. No sugar with the tea. Another chaser, and eventually this and our water materialised near the end of the meal. Should not call themselves a restaurant. The staff simply do not understand what a waiter is.

Upon arrival we had to wait outside for a table to become available which was fine and we didn’t have to wait too long. Staff were very apologetic and friendly. We then got accompanied to our table in a side room with four tables (all occupied), got given a menu - and that’s where it ended. Nobody came to take our order. After about 25 minutes we chased someone which In current mask world is quite painful anyway. We overheard that the table next to us had placed an order which then didn’t go through to the kitchen so had to wait forever. So, my tea arrived but I had to call the waitress back to get sugar. My Mum and my friend had food but didn’t get any cutlery, napkin or sauces. Everything has to be chased which really spoilt the experience. Nobody cane to check up on us or even to clear anything away. The bill had to be chased too. Due to all this we spent a lot more time than anticipated- so the queue outside is even more unsurprising. All in all a disappointing experience with a lot of potential if it was more organised and staff were better trained. Due to the beautiful location it feels like a tourist trap. A real shame.

Visited here whilst on holiday and passing through/sightseeing. Restaurant set in beautiful surrounding grounds of Ely cathedral and which on a sunny day was even more glorious. As the garden seating was full, we opted for an inside table and so didn’t need to queue for more than 5 minutes. All COVID systems were strictly being adhered to which was reassuring and staff were found to be very accommodating, professional, polite and helpful. We were shown to the downstairs area which has vaulted ceilings and was extremely pleasant to be seated in and given how warm the weather was, it was once to be out of the heat and in a cooler, relaxed atmosphere. The menu was quite varied and reasonably priced. We opted for a jacket potato/tuna, mature cheese/chutney sandwiches/salad/crisps, water and black Americano coffee. The waitress took our order promptly with food/drinks arriving in good time, hot and very tasty. Once finished we decided to have a cheese and fruit scone (which we asked to be warmed up, which they duly did and so was a nice touch) with another Americano coffee. Again, all served in good time. It was nice not to be rushed and overall enjoyed the experience very much.

By that time I had developed a really bad headache from the sun, so was glad to get inside and have a glass of water, but as this option was available to them, they could have taken this action sooner rather than left us all standing out there. However once seated, in a very nice room, we had a pleasant tea and cake/biscuit etc and service was of a reasonable level (although we had to go hunting for someone to pay the bill). I can imagine that if on a less busy day it is quite possibly very nice to sit there and relax with a pot of tea as certainly the decor and grounds were very pleasing. Went on a Friday lunchtime in a party of 6. No one meal was worth a good review. It's a cafe catering for coach and society groups doing Ely for the day. The sausages were billed as " local ", so I thought immediately of that excellent pork butcher barely 200 yards away, Edis of Ely, whose bangers best the original Newmarket sausages into a cocked hat! We have been here numerous occasions. We enjoy the tea and scones while sitting outside and enjoying the view of the cathedral. The sandwiches are not full of flavor but the soups are good. The staff can be a bit rude at times.

Sunday morning - stepped one step inside in order to look/ask if there was a table for morning coffee. A very rude young woman "shooed" me out stating that a sign told me to wait to be seated (a sign I hadn't seen). Politeness and good manners are extremely important to me so I walked away and found a much more amenable cafe.

Called in by chance one Saturday lunchtime. Although they were busy the youngman on duty was so friendly and attentive. Food was served quickly and was delicious. I had fish cakes with poached egg. Five star treatment. Five star food.

Delightful location over looking the cathedral and charming room and terrace. Lots of home baking going on - don't arrive too early if you want the maximum choice for things as they clearly are made on the day. Good coffee. A local meeting place with a very pleasant atmosphere

Friendly staff, great view of the vintry garden and cathedral and the scones were almost as good as my mother in laws which is high praise indeed. There was a tempting display of cakes and the meals that were delivered to surrounding tables looked very appetising. The room is bright and was buzzy and welcoming on a damp Friday morning. The outdoor seats in the summer must be very popular due to the setting and the quality of the food on offer.

Visited Ely for Christmas Fayre but due to dietary issues, chose to eat at the Almonry. Extremely helpful, jacket potato was perfectly cooked, smoked salmon and salad. Had 2 x gluten free sweet dishes, had the Millionaire Shortbread, very nice. It was a busy place, had to queue but well worth it.

We had a lovely time at the Almonry during our visit to Ely. My son (age 7) had the ‘specialty hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows’ which he says was “AMAZING!” The rest of us had tea, coffee and scones with jam and cream. The scones were very fresh and tasty. There was also a good selection of cakes, puddings and other food which looked delicious but we didn’t try them. The service was fast and friendly. We highly recommend visiting here when you’re in Ely.

We walked up from the train station and wanted a drink and a snack. We had a slice of cake each which was very nice. My husband had a latte presented in a mug which he said was good. Unfortunately I had tea which came in a pot that reminded me of a tea set I had when i was a child. The cup and saucer were also small. I spent more time pouring than drinking. Very disappointed.

Stopped for coffee & cake & in early October it was warm enough to sit outside with a magnificent view of the cathedral. Coffee & home made cakes excellent & reasonably priced. Plenty of indoor seating & a very tempting Christmas menu - also very reasonably priced. Friendly & efficient service.

Already well known as a tea room The Almonry also does very good meals. We had lunch there today with two friends and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Service was pleasant and friendly and our meals arrived promptly. The food was not 'fancy' but whoesome and well-presented. Our only criticism was that the chips could have been hotter. Pudding were traditional but again good, with plenty of custard on my apple and blackberry pie - always a good sign for me. I would recommend The Almonry for a pleasant lunch with good ambience and in an ancient and impressive setting.

We visited The Almonry today and sat outside in the sunshine with the magnificence of Ely Cathedral towering in front of us. This restaurant is always very good but today it moved into exceptional with a gluten free cream tea..... albeit at ten o’clock in the morning. My sister is coeliac and says she has never eaten a scone so good. Usually gluten free are not brilliant so congratulations to whoever supplies these.

We visited this place with our friends, who were celebrating their wedding anniversary and were looking forward to a nice lunch. When we arrived, it was very busy, including a large party of tourists in the downstairs restaurant. We were asked to wait for a table for 4, which was fine. Whilst waiting, we saw the Specials board in the middle reception area & asked a waiter if these meals could be ordered from any of the three cafes/restaurants. We were told ‘yes’, that was ok.

We weren't intending to have snack during our flying visit to Ely, but the rain encouraged us to pop into the Almondry. We were pleasantly surprised to be greeted at the door by a friendly staff member who escorted us to out seats. Really friendly and efficient service, reasonably priced cakes and drinks. An unusual location, well worth a visit.

Stumbled upon this place whilst exploring Ely and had a very nice lunch with a fantastic view of the cathedral. We sat outside which was lovely (wooden tables with umbrellas for shade) but the inside looked fascinating- lots of little areas with arched ceilings. We had jacket potatoes and wine/Coffee which was all very nice and reasonably priced.

There’s a lovely view of the cathedral from the Almonry gardens. We had to wait quite a while for our order to be taken, a waitress was busy piling crockery and cutlery high onto a tray to clear the tables, with a promise to come back and clean up the spilt milk - she didn’t. The lemon cake was fine, fruit scone was very nice but my coffee was lukewarm. I think next time I’d visit one of the smaller cafes locally where they aren’t so busy.

Well, I’d give zero stars if I could. For what you get, you’re better off getting a microwave tv dinner which is so disappointing as we have been before and it was amazing!!! The menu is very dated, which I can see is part of the yesteryear charm, but the standard of ingredients and cooking is really poor for the price you pay. The starters had gristle and bone in them to an unreasonable level. The gravy with the beef was watery, the meat was chewy and the fish was overcooked to be too dry. I’m sure no one but forethought and planning are to blame, but the roast meat was served with boiled new potatoes as roast potatoes had run out by 7pm on a weekend. The waiter was a cheerful boy, but showed little flare for decent service, and took almost full plates back to the kitchen. No one asked how our meal was, and when we tried to speak to someone, they were all in the kitchen. I had hoped this was a random series of unfortunate events on a night without usual staff, but it appears a new normal having looked at other reviews. Such a shame for a historically lovely establishment with a beautiful location and lovely setting.

I wish they would get on Food Hub and Deliveroo. Always polite friendly female staff, and the food is delicious, I love their large cod chunks, and their homemade fishcake is delicious, chips are always fluffy on the inside, and their battered Sausage has nice flavour. Edited: Portion sizes are smaller now, as is the size of their homemade fishcake.

This pub has new owners and we thought we’d try the food there as the menu looked good. The night we went was pie night, so we both ordered beef in stout pies . Great chips and well cooked veggies, but what a fantastic pie, bursting with slow cooked beef in a great pastry. Looking forward to the next meal here.
