On a very pleasant day, we sat in the beautiful garden overlooking the cathedral. We were seated quickly and our order was taken efficiently. The service was very good, apart from the staff manager who insisted on barking his orders at the waitresses across the whole garden and often confused them but, that aside, the waiting staff were efficient and polite. The food, unfortunately, was a disappointment. I had quiche which had seemingly only a pastry base and was heavy, damp and floppy as though it had been microwaved. It was all cheese and 2 small mushrooms with a small slice of tomato in the top. For £13 it was a very small portion and quite disappointing. The hand-full of chips was fine and the salad ok. My husband had the sausage roll which was even more disappointing. A small, generic, floppy thing, running with grease which I assume had also been microwaved. Sorry, we won’t be returning for food, despite the setting.

We wanted a hit drink, waited in a queue for 10 minutes, they told us that they were only doing nd drinks and cakes, it was about 3pm and that was fine for us as we only wanted a cup of tea. I checked to make sure that they could serve us quickly as we had to get back on the coach at 3.45, I was assured there would be no problem, but after being shown to a table we waited a considerable time and had to chase someone to take our order we finally walked out without being served in time to get back on the coach for a long journey back to London without having had a drink. Very dissapointing, it looked a lovely place.

I ordered a salmon bagel, I asked for no pickled cucumber and rocket, I was asked if it was a preference or allergy, I said preference. It was November 30th - our 38th anniversary - and we decided to have breakfast at The Almory. We don't regret it. As it was winter, the tables were concentrated in a small, but cozy, indoor space. We expected to find a full breakfast, but those who served us were extremely kind when making suggestions for our special day. We really enjoyed it and tried the famous English bread - Scone - washed down with good coffee and hot chocolate. The restaurant area for meal service is large and very elegant.

We've tried to come here three times. Once they turned us away because of a function, once we were waiting by the "wait here to be seated" sign for about ten minutes and nobody came, and once they said we could come in but they were only doing cakes. Presumably they get enough business that they can be this ambivalent towards potential customers but I would say if you are looking for lunch in Ely it's probably not worth your time trying to get seated here. The appealing seating area with the vaulted ceiling seems to close before the plainer area sometimes and is more likely to be closed for a function so if you're coming for the grand surroundings bear that in mind.

The Almonry is the official café and restaurant attached to Ely Cathedral, and is located within the cathedral's grounds (behind the building). It's small, picturesque café that you can relax at after a visit to this magnificent church. Seating out- and inside is limited, so during peak times you'll probably have to queue for a while to get in. It seems easier to find a table outside, if you're willing to deal with the wasps in the garden, of which there are many. There's a board that warns you of that at the entrance to the café. I found this to be no issue at all, but if you're allergic, avoid the garden. The food menu is mainly confined to various cold and warm sandwiches, which aren't exactly cheap, but good. I had the "Pulled Pork Brioche Burger", which was nice, and it came with a side salad and a dollop of sour apple jam, which greatly added to the flavour of the burger (It's served separately). Yo can also pick from a variety of desserts. Generally good and very friendly service. If you're a beer lover, you're out of luck though: Only a bottle of the dreaded Sharpe's Doom Bar is on the menu.

An overpriced and under-standard meal. We were tired after a lovely service at the cathedral and decided to relax and have lunch at the Almonry Restaurant which looked cool and inviting on a hot summers day. The staff took their time getting to us in the queue and enquired whether we were eating out or in. Then we had to wait until a table was cleared outside; all the while watching a single, inconsiderate young woman in blue with her feet up on a chair, talking on her mobile phone long after her friends had dined and left! it is no wonder that the young girls serving looked hassled and tired! Though we are used to ££ restaurants in London, when the food did arrive we were surprised by the very ordinary, tiny wedge of quiche served with a few boiled potatoes and coleslaw, that my husband had ordered - which resulted in my sharing my prawn mayonnaise salad with him. It wasn't just the size of the portion, but the service and quality of food in such lovely surroundings that was disappointing.
