The Alice in Oxford

Unfortunately, we waited over an hour for our food. When our food arrived it was lukewarm. We did mention this to the waiter, who was lovely, and he offered to warm up the food but as we had waited so long we were running late to meet with friends post dinner. We received a discount on the meal which was a nice touch but it unfortunately doesn't take away from the experience. The interiors and styling is beautiful.

The food and room are great - but for the second time running - the service is poor. It takes ages for the food to arrive and you have to keep asking … it took more than half an hour for the mains to arrive today… and the restaurant was only 20% full. Staff get a little stroppy when you ask when the food will arrive…. The food is great… the prices are London level… the service isn’t….That is what let’s the place down

High tea? More like low-T. *British guffaw* Stale sandwiches, scones from M&S and bagged tea. Should have known better when we were the only ones in at tea time. The beautiful setting was the only bright spot in an otherwise grave misuse of £50. Per person. Please avoid.

Cute store. It's irresistible for Alice lovers. Also, the staff was very kind. When he realized that I couldn't speak English, he explained it to me using his smartphone's translator.

The Alice es la cervecería del hotel Randolph. La habitación está preparada para el desayuno y luego el almuerzo, el té y la cena. El ambiente y el servicio es excelente. Alpha is the best! Great service from him and the rest of the team. Food overall was really good, considering the price / venue I’d say it’s a touch below perfect but the chips are absolutely amazing!

I would say the food and wine are fantastic, but perhaps edging towards a little too pricey compared to other nearby locations. That being said, we always return because it is both friendly and consistent!

Shout out to Alpha, he made us feel very comfortable for the time being, but his shift ended not long after we arrived. He gave us good wine recommendations and made us feel welcome overall. I rated the atmosphere 3 because, we were the only black Africans in the room that day the awkward stares from the other white people made us feel somewhat uncomfortable. They made it look like we were not worthy enough to be in a restaurant like that. I rated the food 3 because the stake was dry and mashed potatoes wasn’t well mashed. Presentation was low as well. Please do better!

The decor is beautiful, but the quality of the food was poor, and the service was inattentive. My duck was salty and tasted past its best date, and the soup was lukewarm. My fellow diners were not impressed either. A shame, as I would've liked to go back thanks to the surroundings.

We were celebrating Christmas and bidding a farewell to our neighbor who will relocate back to South Korea after Christmas. The food was amazingly delicious especially the slow cook pork chop, duck breast was absolutely tender, juicy and tasteful. Won't regret if you choose either. Wine recommendation was a wonderful pairing choice to all our selected dishes.

I am Diamond guest celebrate our 21 Anniversary checked in upgrade to Oxford suite. Hotel right in city centre. Room was excellent traditional English style. We had excellent food and service in restaurant. We also had drinks in Bar. We will definitely back again.

Stopped to have a quick bite before catching the train back to London. I had the mushroom risotto followed by passionfruit sorbet.

We had a great time here as a group of 5 and a baby for afternoon tea. The staff were attentive and friendly, food was great and the drawing room for afternoon tea was beautifully decorated for Christmas. The offer of complimentary refills on sandwiches was much appreciated although we were too full after round 2 of sandwiches to finish our sweet treats! Luckily, our server was able to give us a lovely takeaway box for those. Would thoroughly recommend.

One of the rare high-ceiling restaurants in Oxford; but sadly, the property is let down by the restaurant management. Food is solid by Oxford standards but the service is painfully sub-par. There are enough serving staff but they don’t seem to have been sufficiently trained to offer an efficient service. A lot of walking around / coalescing instead of being discreetly attentive to guests. You have the sense that the staff are weary of the guests and they can be overwhelmed very quickly. They try their best (so no shade) but whoever is responsible for running this establishment has a lot to answer for. At 30% seat capacity, my order couldn’t be taken because it might overwhelm the kitchen. My stater plate was empty for a good while before someone asked if it was finished (appreciate the asking but there was nothing on it). I signed up for a promotion from the restaurant which the staff hadn’t heard of. It took me 10 mins to locate the email and then clicked through to the website with a member of staff to prove that a discount was due. I’m a regular guest at the hotel so I have breakfast at Alice as well. The serving staff’s struggles are the same. You need to spot them to get help and service is slow. The heated plates are so hot that you need to hold them with a napkin. They probably waste dozens of small glass jars (containing jams to condiments) each DAY rather than offering a more environmentally sensible solution. I can’t understand why anyone would run a restaurant with such indifference. What a waste of a stunning space - a real shame! PS - 3 stars mainly due to the venue

Dear Team at The Alice, I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to share my feedback regarding my recent visit to The Alice on Sunday, where I had made a reservation for seven people to enjoy Afternoon Tea. This was a special occasion for my family and me, as we do not often have the opportunity to gather in such a setting, and I had been looking forward to it greatly. Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly at the reception, and I must commend the staff member there for his professional and courteous service. However, unfortunately, the experience took a downward turn shortly thereafter. A waiter came to take our tea and coffee orders but did not ask whether we wanted the traditional or sparkling Afternoon Tea, nor were we offered any champagne. As a result, we did not receive the full experience we had expected. Once our teas were served — albeit after a considerable wait — we noticed several issues. First, we were not provided with teaspoons, which should have been placed on the table along with the cups and saucers. Additionally, the sugar bowl was nearly empty, and the tea pot itself was unclean, with sugar residue stuck to the inside — certainly not the standard I would expect from a high-end establishment in Oxford. I attempted to locate a staff member to request teaspoons, but unfortunately struggled to get anyone’s attention. It seemed as though there were insufficient staff available, and even after asking twice, it took some time before we received the teaspoons. Furthermore, my teapot was cracked on the inside, and my grandmother’s coffee was served half-full. The delays continued when it came to our food. When it was finally brought to the table, it was presented without any explanation of what was on each tier, nor were we asked if we required additional drinks. Additionally, while cream and jam were brought for five of us, my partner and I had to wait an additional five minutes before our portions were delivered. By this point, some members of our party were already midway through their sandwiches. I am left wondering why the service was so delayed and why certain elements were not prepared in advance. Overall, it seemed as though the staff lacked a sense of urgency, and the service did not meet the standards I had come to expect from such an esteemed venue. Given that we spent nearly £400 for this experience, I was disappointed with the overall quality of service, particularly when compared to my previous visits where the staff went above and beyond. I would appreciate hearing your thoughts on this matter and would be grateful if you could advise on how this issue might be addressed and rectified. Thank you for your attention to this feedback. I’m unsure if the service we received was on account of my thick Welsh accent, or the fact that we ordered the steak night offer and not from the a la cart menu (purely because I am an incredibly picky eater), but I have never in my life had such poor service, it went past the realms of appalling and firmly into personally offensive. I am acutely aware that we were treated as if we are the poor relation, it’s unacceptable, it’s prejudicery when there is no basis. I overheard a waiter say that they only had 20 tables for the whole night - so why was our starter forgotten 3 times? Why did we receive lukewarm meals? Is it again, because we do not seem affluent, or once more the fact that I ordered something on the cheaper side? I’ll again reiterate that it’s on account of my eating habits, but that shouldn’t even be something I have to justify. All in all I have hand on heart received better service in Wetherspoons, and that’s something I never in my life expected to write. I requested that the service charge be removed and am a polite enough person that I said I didn’t mean to offend. No one approached us once to ask if we were happy with our meal, or if they could help us with anything. I think they were glad to be rid of us as they felt we brought the place down, but all I did was leave nearly in tears. I, in fact, am in tears now. I am hurt, and I wonder now if this is how people not as fortunate as I am have been treated whenever they went to have a meal in a highly regarded place. Needless to say we won’t be returning, I am glad we didn’t book to stay in the hotel, not that it matters. I will warn my family members and colleagues to not book despite the fact they have talked about it, on account of the fact that we as a whole don’t seem to fit despite our actual circumstance, your managed ought to be ashamed of themselves and take a long look in the mirror, hospitality is not a word I’d ever use in regards to this place.

We had an absolutely superb meal here. Steak night Tuesdays! Aidan was a fantastic waiter, and also helped me sort the table booking earlier in the day! Superb service and delicious food!

Oh dear - this is a cynically and delibrately overpriced restaurant. The food we were served for lunch was mediocre at best. Oxford is blessed with many excellent restaurants - this is not one of them.

Arrived early, so went to one of the snug areas to enjoy pre-dinner drinks. The place had become quite busy when it was time for our table (reservation advised). Very good drinks menu and well priced set menu. A la carte had a few more options, particularly on the meat side. Food was very good as was the service. The vibe of the place was very good too, being busy, but not loud. Very enjoyable.

The afternoon tea was excellent. The food was delicious and plentiful, worth the cost per person. The only issue we had was the service. We waited ages for our bill and finally had to go to the reception desk to ask to pay. Also, after our initial round of food and tea delivery our server never stopped back by. They have free refills on scones and sandwiches and tea. If we had been more hungry we would have been upset since we were never able to order any, since our server never came back.

Invited for dinner, I was excited to finally try this restaurant for a special occasion with a friend after hearing so much about it, but unfortunately the experience fell short of expectations. Despite open tables and no visible reservations, we were asked to wait at the bar until 'ready' and then had to remind ourselves to the waiters to be seated after 30mins. Once at our table, while the food was enjoyable, the wait was unexpectedly long and the waiters rather indifferent, especially considering the simplicity of the dishes and the fact that we had mentioned our rather tight schedule due to the initial unexpected wait. We also had some problems paying cash, which added to the overall inconvenience. The atmosphere may look chic and comfortable, but unfortunately the experience didn't quite live up to expectations, leaving us disappointed.

The restaurant is understaffed for its size, and the skill level of the staff is lacking. While the food is delicious, it takes too long to be served.

We went for a dinner after graduation. There were 7 in the booking and it was a Saturday night so expected a la carte. We were given the set menu and told there was no option as we were a group. We specifically chose the restaurant as we had 3 vegetarians with us and they had good choices for starters and mains for veggie options on the a la carte menu online. As it was they had one choice, and the food was very nice, but we weren't offered bread or any side dishes so actually left hungry. Other tables had the a la carte option and the restaurant wasn't particularly busy as we were eating at 6pm. Not impressed and won't return, and we would have spent a lot more money if we had the chance to order enough food. Very pretty and obviously a lot of money spent on it, but the service was so so and they really should tell people that if booking in a group they will limit choices of what they can order.

I booked the Alice for my daughter's 9th birthday months ago. Three days in advance I called to confirm and ask for something special for my daughter (a little cake with happy birthday on it). I was assured by a nice man that everything was fine. Turned up this afternoon to be told that our booking had been bumped by a group event. They eventually sorted it out but I had to yell at them. We won't be going back. The cake is OK. They didn't provide anything special for my daughter.

Nice atmosphere, nicely decorated, great big chandeliers. However the white curtains in the Alice room were grey and dusty. The food was very expensive for the microscopic portions. I am glad I had a good breakfast as the main dish was incredibly small and disappointing. I had the cod with olive crust. It was not hot but also dry around the edges. The waiter did not describe the dishes and seemed uninterested in the food he served. However the service charge was automatically added to the bill. Overall, not impressed especially as it was a special occasion.

We enjoyed the afternoon tea in The Alice. We are 3 adults and 1 kid. We spent 117gbp for two tea and three-layer snacks including cakes, scones and sandwiches. Also we ordered a main course of cauliflower dish.

Me encantó la decoración divertida/vibrante/tradicional y el servicio súper atento y cálido. £ 29 por 2 platos muy buena relación calidad-precio y algunas combinaciones creativas. Ensalada de brotes de feta y guisante muy agradable, gaspacho excelente. Besugo y patata también muy bueno con mousse inteligente. Pescado muy ligeramente sobrecocinado, pero todavía agradable. Sin duda recomendaría para una tranquila comida del domingo por la noche!

Came here on Thursday 29/8 for afternoon tea. The atmosphere was lovely and we loved the food. However the service was awfully long for such establishment. Felt ignore most times we asked to place order and bill.

We adore the Randolph Hotel and the Alice Restorant… They are our home away from home when we are in Oxford. What makes everything that much more special is to have a friendly and professional server such as Prathamesh who welcomes us with a nice smile and a good cup of coffee!

Beautiful place and food was ok, but expected more from a place like this especially for the price. I ordered the steak and it took over 50 minutes to arrive and when it did it was not cooked correctly (it was well done and I ordered it medium rare!) A real let down and will not be returning

Beautiful setting, wonderful location, let down by poor service and okayish food. Went for afternoon tea with my family. Despite the reservation there was no table set for us, which had to be set while we were at the table. Ordered a cocktail, never arrived. No offer of water for the table. 30 minutes later the food arrived. Had to help the wait to clear the table to make room. Sandwiches were dry, scones were decent, petit fours were excellent. During our afternoon tea it was hard to find someone to give us more hot water. It was not a busy day at all, seemed like the staff were quite new. At the price point (40 pounds per person plus service charge) and location (5-star hotel) this is inexcusable.

Starts and mains okay - not going to blow your minds. What ever you do don’t order the cheese platter for dessert- it is just a mickey take - wafer thin cheese, completely offensive for £16.

Had an awful night at the Randolph. Started off with them not finding my reservation. They forgot our side dishes with the mains. The food was not that good either.and sides are extra. The band does not play jazz. The singer could not sing and the drummer was rubbish. Obviously a group of students trying to make some money. Then at the end they put £15 surcharge on the bill.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of service and of the set lunch menu. A really great experience.

Omi did a very good service. She is kind, smiling, and soon response to my asking. Good job.

I had afternoon tea here and it was disappointing. The sandwich was awful, the scone had a strange wheat smell, and the dessert was not good. The only thing that was good was the strawberry jam. The service was terrible; no one came to check on us. The bill was very slow, and we had to wait until everyone else left even though we finished first. £40 for one person is ridiculous pricing for such bad food and service.

My friend and I enjoyed a spontaneous lunch on a Sunday. The setting is fantastic - spacious, with great natural light. The food was superb, and excellent value (I had the 3 course set menu). The lovage emulsion with the sea bream was a particular highlight. Service was excellent: thanks to Joao who took such good care of us.

After a recommendation I booked The Alice for a friend’s birthday. The room and seating were very good, we chose our starters and main course with additional vegetables the starters arrived and were superb mushroom & tarragon soup & English asparagus salad and looked forward to our main course based on this introduction, The main course arrived without the extra vegetables (which were needed). The sea bass was excellent but as said needed bolstering with the extra vegetables which didn't arrive in a timely manner so were cancelled. The lamb can best be described as underwhelming or poor. Desserts were fine but the overall attention paid to our table of four can best be described as well below standard for the price paid and the hype in the advertising. Pull your socks up!

I'm still reeling from the incredible meal I had at this restaurant last night! The chef's creativity and skill shone through in every dish, from the amuse-bouche to the dessert. The ingredients were top-notch and expertly prepared, with each bite a revelation. The service was impeccable, with our server being attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. The atmosphere was cozy and intimate, with a fireplace crackling in the background. I've never felt so pampered and indulged at a restaurant. If you're looking for a truly exceptional dining experience, look no further!

Perfect hotel breakfast. Great variety as you’d expect, but the quality of the food sets it apart from many other hotel breakfasts. Excellent service - 5* feel but nice and relaxed. Special mention for Ohmie, who looked after us with a smile always! Thanks Alice and thanks Randolph!

I was very pleasantly surprised by our dinner. The restaurant didn’t have many guests so the vibe wasn’t too lively. But, the food was amazing! Sid made great recommendations (cauliflower, sirloin, bib lettuce salad). I really loved the cauliflower and my husband was happy with his sirloin !
