The Alice in Oxford

Poor service. Noisy venue. Food mediocre. Bill had VAT and service added to advertised prices. Expensive even before that.

Nice atmosphere, nicely decorated, great big chandeliers. However the white curtains in the Alice room were grey and dusty. The food was very expensive for the microscopic portions. I am glad I had a good breakfast as the main dish was incredibly small and disappointing. I had the cod with olive crust. It was not hot but also dry around the edges. The waiter did not describe the dishes and seemed uninterested in the food he served. However the service charge was automatically added to the bill. Overall, not impressed especially as it was a special occasion.

We enjoyed the afternoon tea in The Alice. We are 3 adults and 1 kid. We spent 117gbp for two tea and three-layer snacks including cakes, scones and sandwiches. Also we ordered a main course of cauliflower dish.

Loved the fun/vibrant/traditional decor and super attentitive and warm service. £29 for 2 course very good value and some creative combinations. Feta and pea shoot salad very nice, gaspacho excellent. Seabream and potato also very good with clever mousse. Fish very slightly overcooked but still nice. Would def recommend for a quiet Sunday night meal!

Food and service excellent. Note that the menu prices on the table menus do NOT include VAT. This was an unwelcome shock when we received the bill. It slightly spoiled our birthday/anniversary treat provided by our son and family. It felt unnecessarily deceptive. Not at all what we would expect from a prestige Oxford Hotel.

The Cream Tea was amazing (specifically the scones!), and our server Shared was the best!

We had a lovely meal at the Alice Restaurant at The Randolph Hotel. The food and service were excellent. Our server, Aiden was extremely attentive and enhanced our dining experience.

Came here on Thursday 29/8 for afternoon tea. The atmosphere was lovely and we loved the food. However the service was awfully long for such establishment. Felt ignore most times we asked to place order and bill.

We adore the Randolph Hotel and the Alice Restorant… They are our home away from home when we are in Oxford. What makes everything that much more special is to have a friendly and professional server such as Prathamesh who welcomes us with a nice smile and a good cup of coffee!

Beautiful place and food was ok, but expected more from a place like this especially for the price. I ordered the steak and it took over 50 minutes to arrive and when it did it was not cooked correctly (it was well done and I ordered it medium rare!) A real let down and will not be returning

Beautiful setting, wonderful location, let down by poor service and okayish food. Went for afternoon tea with my family. Despite the reservation there was no table set for us, which had to be set while we were at the table. Ordered a cocktail, never arrived. No offer of water for the table. 30 minutes later the food arrived. Had to help the wait to clear the table to make room. Sandwiches were dry, scones were decent, petit fours were excellent. During our afternoon tea it was hard to find someone to give us more hot water. It was not a busy day at all, seemed like the staff were quite new. At the price point (40 pounds per person plus service charge) and location (5-star hotel) this is inexcusable.

Starts and mains okay - not going to blow your minds. What ever you do don’t order the cheese platter for dessert- it is just a mickey take - wafer thin cheese, completely offensive for £16.

Had an awful night at the Randolph. Started off with them not finding my reservation. They forgot our side dishes with the mains. The food was not that good either.and sides are extra. The band does not play jazz. The singer could not sing and the drummer was rubbish. Obviously a group of students trying to make some money. Then at the end they put £15 surcharge on the bill.

Omi did a very good service. She is kind, smiling, and soon response to my asking. Good job.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of service and of the set lunch menu. A really great experience.

I had afternoon tea here and it was disappointing. The sandwich was awful, the scone had a strange wheat smell, and the dessert was not good. The only thing that was good was the strawberry jam. The service was terrible; no one came to check on us. The bill was very slow, and we had to wait until everyone else left even though we finished first. £40 for one person is ridiculous pricing for such bad food and service.

My friend and I enjoyed a spontaneous lunch on a Sunday. The setting is fantastic - spacious, with great natural light. The food was superb, and excellent value (I had the 3 course set menu). The lovage emulsion with the sea bream was a particular highlight. Service was excellent: thanks to Joao who took such good care of us.

After a recommendation I booked The Alice for a friend’s birthday. The room and seating were very good, we chose our starters and main course with additional vegetables the starters arrived and were superb mushroom & tarragon soup & English asparagus salad and looked forward to our main course based on this introduction, The main course arrived without the extra vegetables (which were needed). The sea bass was excellent but as said needed bolstering with the extra vegetables which didn't arrive in a timely manner so were cancelled. The lamb can best be described as underwhelming or poor. Desserts were fine but the overall attention paid to our table of four can best be described as well below standard for the price paid and the hype in the advertising. Pull your socks up!

I'm still reeling from the incredible meal I had at this restaurant last night! The chef's creativity and skill shone through in every dish, from the amuse-bouche to the dessert. The ingredients were top-notch and expertly prepared, with each bite a revelation. The service was impeccable, with our server being attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. The atmosphere was cozy and intimate, with a fireplace crackling in the background. I've never felt so pampered and indulged at a restaurant. If you're looking for a truly exceptional dining experience, look no further!

Perfect hotel breakfast. Great variety as you’d expect, but the quality of the food sets it apart from many other hotel breakfasts. Excellent service - 5* feel but nice and relaxed. Special mention for Ohmie, who looked after us with a smile always! Thanks Alice and thanks Randolph!

I was very pleasantly surprised by our dinner. The restaurant didn’t have many guests so the vibe wasn’t too lively. But, the food was amazing! Sid made great recommendations (cauliflower, sirloin, bib lettuce salad). I really loved the cauliflower and my husband was happy with his sirloin !

Biki provided us with excellent service. Nothing was too much trouble - he and his colleague were delightful.

The place was packed on a Thursday night but very understaffed despite the jazz night advertised weeks ago. Service was painfully slow and we had to ask for a second menu. I saw two people just giving up and leaving, but when a young solo female walked in all waiters suddenly were at her disposal promptly bringing food and drinks, pouring water. Our table was shaky so I fixed it by putting my napkin under the leg. Food was ok, but I expected a much better service from a 5-star establishment like the Randolph

Beautiful place with great food. Service badly let it down. Great main courses - cod with black olive was excellent, lamb was delicious. Triple cooked chips are great, perfectly cooked. Desserts were good too. Good tea options. Pleasant cocktails. Lovely space nicely decorated. Service sadly was poor. One side dish was not added to our order and had to be reordered and came after our mains were finished. We had to wait a while to order desserts and tea. Twenty minutes after ordering, we asked after our desserts and they hadn't been put in the system. It ended up taking around 40 minutes to get the desserts and tea, and an hour between ordering dessert and paying and leaving. They did deduct the price of the tea from the bill which was nice but felt a bit of a nominal gesture. Cocktail glasses were also never cleared when emptying leaving the table more a bit cluttered for dessert and tea.

We had afternoon tea there yesterday, the bread was stale and we could not eat it. The crockery was dirty and 3 things had bits of previous food on them and had to get it changed but no apology. The service was awful to non existent.

I visited with my family to celebrate Alice in Wonderland Day in Oxford. Given the amount of money spent, I was disappointed that the staff did not even offer a simple "thank you" or "goodbye" as we were leaving. While the food was lovely, the overall atmosphere and customer service were lacking. Regrettably, I would neither return nor recommend this place. In contrast, the service at GBK is far superior, with staff who genuinely deserve tips.

Brilliant location and setting. We went in after seeing the board outside for Steak night. Once we were in we were looked after perfectly. The staff are all at the top of their game. Friendly and efficient. We had starters and then the Steak. The Asparagus salad starter was beautiful, as was the haddock and cheese souffle. The steaks were perfectly cooked and the sauce was one I have never had before, but hope to enjoy again. A glass of house wine is included with the steak night deal, it was also great quality. Keep up the good work.

Tea was mediocre for the price. No savoury tarts as advertised but website not amended. Had better elsewhere. Paying for where it is not quality I’m afraid.

Our meal was delicious and the lamb was a real Hilight cooked by chef George! Australian farmers we’ve eaten plenty of lamb and this was special ! Our server Alpha was a delight.

We had a wonderful afternoon tea in the drawing room. Sid and the other chap working with him were really helpful. Sid was really friendly and chatted to us about the hotel. The food was delicious. Little bit loud at the start of our meal, but our server Sid did a wonderful job—recommended a drink my partner loved—and the food was excellent. A perfect special occasion meal! Would v much recommend if you’re in the market to celebrate something in Oxford. Gorgeous building.

I was on my way to the Ashmolean and was looking for somewhere to have lunch when I spotted the set menu being advertised. The Randolph Hotel is a beautiful building and The Alice looked very stylish, I hadn’t booked, but a table was available. The staff were very welcoming, polite and friendly. Perfect service. I ordered from the set menu - I had a main and dessert. I have to be honest and say that it was one of the best meals I’ve had in a while. Absolutely delicious. Beautifully cooked and presented, and the dessert was to die for. Worth every penny.
