We have given it three tries, first, food was OK, short staffed, bad service, 2nd similar but food again was ok, tried again last night, 8pm booking, only us and a table of 4, another couple were then seated, table of 4 had finished. We ordered starters and mains, starters arrived, yes ok, having finished those they were cleared, we awaited our mains, we could see 4 main meals on the counter where the two chefs were as only us and the other couple, they had to be ours, after watching for ten minutes and still sitting there under the heat lamps, I spoke with the manager, he went to them but apparently not fully prepared, awaiting chips ? After about a further 10 minutes they were served to us, no cutlery so we had to take from the next table, the food was dry, mixed grill was awful eggs were now rubbery all meat was dry, salad was warm, the other meal was equally as bad, warm salad and small tomatoes, chicken dried out, sauce congealed. Neither edible, so mostly left. No we didn’t have to pay, but how can Two chefs not prepare 2 meals to come out fresh and hot, it’s wasn’t as if it was busy, total joke, maybe time to replace with a new restaurant team. I feel all there have become complacent. To be that empty on a Saturday evening, something is wrong.

Absolutely awful, food left on warmer for over 15 minutes and when it came to the table it was dry, tasteless and warm . The salad was also on the plate under the warmer and was disgusting . The food was returned to the kitchen , we weren’t charged and we left.

Nice service. Poor food. My classic burger was cold, small, overcooked and served on a bun without any relish. There was a limp lettuce, sliced raw onion and a tomato slice. My side of onion rings were overcooked and they were half cold as were eveyone's fries. We were informed that the restaurant had had no fish delivered that day or brocoli. Ok but what restaurant has no ice cream in stock. What is going on here. Being typically English we politely smiled and quietly left, these problems are not the fault of the serving staff.

Booked a table for 2 to celebrate my birthday, turned up on time and had to wait for 12 mins for someone to seat us. Having been given the menus and drinks order taken it was ages before the drinks arrived and the server went to take our order. The first 2 things we chose were not available!!! Why didn't they tell us this when handing us the menus. I said forget it and walked out. We found a nice pub up the road and had a lovely meal. Easy choice next time.

We had a lovely 3 course dinner menu ( at lunchtime) for my wife's birthday. Joe ( our server) looked after us from start to finish. He was very attentive, and service was at the right pace. The food was excellent and Joe made sure we had everything we needed, including some wet wipes for our chocolate sundaes! We had a 25% off voucher, and I was very impressed with the final bill. It was quite quiet in the restaurant, which was surprising considering the quality and price of food.

We can’t fault the Beefeater for good value and tasty food - we have been here quite a few times and they have never failed us, The chicken and rib combo was delicious as was the Sirloin Steak. Our server, Sarah, was polite and courteous throughout our visit and was attentive but not obtrusive. There were only a few tables occupied when we visited- when we have been here before it has been very busy but with only a couple of people serving which has meant the service has been slower and detrimental to the overall Beefeater experience - if only they employed enough staff at busy times I am sure the reviews would be better!

Booked a table for my husbands birthday well that was a disaster. Walked in to dirty glasses everywhere, (place was not heaving) waited for 20 mins before a little angry woman barked do you all have a table booked we replied yea and she kept walking no hello no sorry for your wait! After another 10 mins an elderly gentleman in front of us asked a young man how long until he would be seated the young man got in his face and shouted they were busy and stressed. The man said well it would be nice if someone had spoken to us. The waiter screamed at the old man that they had and shoved him out of the way. We waited to complain to the manager who said that didn’t happen to which we all backed the man ,she grumbled I doubt it he’s my son and anyway we are stressed and busy! Horrified we decided that we wouldn’t stay and as we were about to leave we noticed one of the waitresses sticking her fingers up to a young girl in the que. ABSOLUTLY DISGUSTING behaviour from all and I’ve logged an official complaint with whitbreads.

Food undercooked, staff slow even when not busy, food undercooked and very pale - they can't even get chips right - basically still firm. Soggy batter on fish. I've noticed it before and it is still the case - some of the staff here are just miserable. I won't be returning. On looking at the 5 star reviews, the two next to each other (below) look very similar - very short and they both name two staff members - I believe the reviews are fake.

The review is more on the service then the food as we never actually ended eating here. Walked in and it was quiet was is not always a god sign but, as we were near by and never been here before we thought we would give it a try. Soon as we walked in the staff member by there door said she would be with us in just a sec, 5 mins later she still didn’t come back. Like I said before it was pretty much dead inside so she couldn’t be dealing with another customer. Found another member of staff and asked for a seat which then they came across as we was a nuisance so we ended up walking out before ordering anything. Will never return, would give zero star for the zero customer service skills but can’t.

Don’t make an effort to visit this place. I had the misfortune to have to have my 40th birthday here last year on a Sunday (I didn’t want to but it was more convenient for the other people attending so I don’t have good memories of my 40th). Most of what was served was poor quality frozen stuff. I’m here tonight and was hungry so I ordered the Paprika Chicken which was like rubber which you think means it’s overcooked but no, it stank and was pink inside. The manager asked me if the meal was okay and I told him it was horrible. He replied with something like “haha, we aim to make it as horrible as we can” I imagine that he thought he was being funny. I don’t recommend this place for food.

We chose not to use the restaurant again as the condition of the property left a great deal to be desired. The exterior is quite run down and the interior decor is very shabby. The carpeting is beyond cleaning and needs to be replaced. However, the place was busy and it was a Monday night which means that there are a lot of people who do not put as much emphasis on the appearance of a property as we do. The door did not have a lock so I just pushed it and placed my bag up against it. When i went to exit the toilet I could not move the door it was tightly lodged against the wall tiles. I tugged on the handle and tried to get out. I luckily had my phone on me and a signal I managed to ring my friend who was nearly home by then. She came back to kick the door open. Went there yesterday to get a meal from the Albert Beefeater yesterday, what a calamity. We needed a table for seven which we booked , in hindsight a mistake , should have asked for a threee and a four, but was strange because there appeared to be plenty of room in the restuarant. We were told the wait was forty minutes, given we had travelled by train, we thought we`d better stick with it. Next we tried to get our orders placed in advance of our table being ready, couldn`t do that, too many covers already for kitchen to handle.Obviously the staff were having problems as they kept disappearing out of sight, obviously well trained in complaint minimisation, if your not there you cannot be complained at.Eventually get hold of a menu, nearly £12 for fish & chips, I`m sorry that is just ridiculous.I had a pint of real ale , which was althought visually acceptable tasted like it had been pumped out of a ditch. The gents although not the worst I have ever come across left somthing to be desired and the hand drier didn`t work, hence people using loo roll to dry their hands. We gave up in dispair, I feel if we had peservered we would still be there now.....If it was rammed you could expect to wait , but it wasn`t.The resturant staff were turning other punters away because of the time.We will not be back....

Popped in for lunch somewhat against better judgement as we took my parents here some years ago and had a pretty poor meal - should have known better. I ordered the smoked paprika chicken salad with house dressing, Mrs D the warm steak sandwich with caramelised onions and sausage & chips for my daughter. Meals came out slowly and when they did it was not good. We should always start with a positive and my daughter's sausage and chips was fine so the chef can use the fryer adequately. That was as good as it got. My salad came without any of the advertised dressing so I went to the bar to ask for some. It duly arrived and for some chopped veg, chicken and a dressing it was OK - it's a salad in a Beefeater after all. While awaiting the dressing Mrs D was becoming increasingly concerned about the voracity of the claimed crisp baguette, warm steak and onions as what appeared was a soft, doughy, sickly anaemic white arm of bread with some slices of cold steak and no onions at all. I called the male member of staff over to complain and showed him the deeply offensive sandwich and he said he would speak to his boss about the problems. Ten minutes later and with no sign whatsoever of him reappearing, I took to my feet with my wife's plate in my hand and took my place in the queue at the bar. After he finished serving his customers he appeared to be surprised that I was still there and was now asking to speak to the manager in person. He went behind the scenes and while in earshot I got to hear "Well, what's his problem now?" from the female manager followed by "He's at the bar…" from the gormless bar hand. I explained to the manager after she appeared of the problems with service and the meal and she graciously (so graciously) agreed to refund my wife's meal which was only fair, as she hadn't eaten it. Please do yourself a favour and drive on the next 200 yards to Maccy D's as at least the food is consistent and the staff act like they might give a toss about you even after they take your money.

They do not answer the phone to take reservations, the online booking doesn't work either. They do not serve bar meals on a Saturday afternoon/evening ( my experience on Sat 25th.Jan 14)It's only pub grub, MacD's with a knife and fork... nothing more.So until Whitbread sorts the place out and re-introduces the concept of customer service, my only recommendation is, spend your hard earned money at one of the many fantastic independent restaurants in Colchester.

And thrn the smell went whilst walking thru so I jsut thought it was me and we seated on the upper part and could smell it again. It was very potent so we moved tables and the the waitress I think was laura looked like she was going to explode that we mved tables. We ordered and it took 45 mins for a couple of bbq salads. The drjnks came within seconds of being seated...by lewis....me and my oartner thouht lewis was running the whole show! We could only see him running back and forth when no one else was on show?I dont think ilbe going back as I keep recently seeing eco lab vans and some kind of environmental healtlh van maybe? vans in the front car park aling with the over flowing bins and skips Over all not good I dont recommend this smelly messy looking pub.

Clearly an example of a venue living off of brand recognition. Beef eater used to be at the forefront of dining but now its just lagging clearly, and this particular branch shows it tenfold. £11 for a 8oz burger? Rediculous. The patty wasn't even that tastey and the all you could chips were not forth coming as they was never any staff to ask for a refill. Also I have no idea how it takes 45mins to cook two burgers? I don't think I'll be back any time soon.

I really used to love this place. But this year it has been awful. I have been 3 times this year and each time the wait was far too long and the food nothing special. I accepted the first time, it was very busy, so gave it another go, this time it wasn't busy and was bad, so this month (Nov 2013), thought we would give it another try, and have to say, will never go again. As we came it, around 1pm, a couple were leaving, complaining as they left about the waiting times. Didn't think much of it, I like to see for myself. Waited over 10 mins to order a drink and then anouther 20 minutes before they took our food order. I don't mind, I have worked in restaurants and have more patience than most, but there was absolutely no reason for this length of wait. The food then came after half an hour. Far to long to wait for a glorified burger and chips. Most of the people in the restaurant were waiting to either be served or have their plates removed. I could see the food being cooked, it was placed on the serving area under the lights and there it sat, some of it was sat there for around 20 minutes. Shockingly bad service, and could see absolutely no reason for it. They were not busy, I could have managed that number of tables on my own, the food had been prepared but was just left, I have no idea where the staff were and what they were doing. I would rather have gone to McDonalds up the road. The food was awful, having sat waiting for someone to serve it. The service was awful and the staff actually seemed resigned to the fact that everyone was fed up and complaining, it really made me cringe.

Oh dear - six of us ate here because we were staying in the hotel next door and thought it would be handy for a quick, reasonable meal on the night of our arrival. Wish we had gone into town! Chicken salad with barbeque sauce was a very sad salad topped with a dry chicken breast and a massive dollop of horrible sauce, the chicken pasta was similarly a bowl of tasteless pasta in a tasteless sauce topped with a dry chicken breast. The burger, surely should be ok in a beefeater pub but was one of the driest toughest burgers ever eaten (though in fairness the chips and brioche roll seemed ok). Prices would have been ok - £10 approx. per main meal if the meals had been better but for what they were seemed very pricey. Especially when compared to the Prezzo meal we had the next evening - same price per head but with better food by far and better wine too! waitress was nice and friendly though and when she told one of us the cod fish and chips had just sold out she did bother to go to the kitchen and see if they had the cheaper white fish from the lunchtime speacial menu avaialble instead. It was the cooking that let this place down - we weren't expecting much from it but were disappointed anyway!

My mum and Dad went here the other day for lunch, only four tables running, they were told 15 minute wait for table, and then at least another half wait for food, due to the fact they are often "short of staff at lunch time and can only manage four tables"...so they left to go elsewhere that could do a better job....dear, dear Albert, wakey wakey !

"Beefeaters" is the name prominently sported outside this pub and restaurant serving steaks, grilled meats and basic pub food. Meat was good and tasty, and reasonably lightly salted. Side orders were OK, including soup and garlic bread.Choice was good for meats, quite basic beyond that.In the pub section, prices looked a bit high to me - if I have limited experience with steak restaurants here and elsewhere. Service was good, including a nearly successful effort to get us a second thought order at the same time as the other dishes we had ordered some five minutes before - nice.

We visited twice: the first time we shared a toasted cheese and ham sandwich and a cream tea, with a fabulous hot chocolate. The second time we had lunch of a mixed ploughman’s and a sausage baguette with tea and fruit juices. All the food was excellent and service was also very good.

Staff lovely! Muffins I’ve tried on several occasions pretty bland was very disappointed . Considering the name of the shop you would think that muffins would be special!

Normally it is u get what u pay for, which was average usually. Today had a large mixed grill and gourmet steak and both were spot on. Presume they have a new chef? More of a 4* food today than ur usual wetherspoons. Well done chef and staff and presumably new meat suppliers?
