Great that they don’t take reservations and that you can order at the till when you’re ready but the food was only average. We had a roast beef Sunday lunch that was bland and the sea bass which was a small portion of weirdly put together ingredients of baby onions and bacon. Puddings were ok too but nothing was really tasty. This is the kind of restaurant that’s great in the summer when you can sit outside and have a bottle of wine and some nibbles and then go elsewhere for dinner.

Spent one night here just after Christmas in lovely spacious and stylish Room 6 .....very comfortable and with a good en suite. Staff very helpful and friendly. Thank you. The only improvement would be the complimentary beverages tray which had not been refilled so I used the last and only coffee bag. The note saying to call reception for the milk was annoying....some included UHT milk capsules would have been better.

Stayed here for one night while visiting family in the area, we usually stay at the sister hotel ‘The Pier’ in Harwich but this one was closer and £20 a night cheaper but by the time we added the two dogs to the bill at £35 EACH we wished we had stayed at the Pier. The rooms at the pier are fab in contrast to the rooms here, the room we had here was ‘small’, I’m glad we didn’t bring the cat as there wouldn’t have been room to swing it! The room was so hot, even turning the radiator off made no difference, we couldn’t open the windows and the Dyson type fan they provide was no use. BTW, those Dyson fans aren’t ‘fans’ they’re air purifiers!! We had the bathroom light on all night so the bathroom extractor fan would suck the air out. When we stay at the Pier we get a dog bowl, dog treats, poo bags, here for the extra £70 there was nothing. The Pier provide a King size bed, here a double, the night’s sleep here was awful, not noisy, but probably the worst night’s sleep in a hotel we’ve ever had. We had dinner, which was a bit strange, you’re given a pencil and a pad, write down what you want and take it to the bar, At these prices I’m paying for a service! I expect someone to take my order and as I order they can answer my questions about the menu, can’t the waiting staff write? If you don’t want the staff to interact with your guests then install a McDonalds type drive through system!! There was no roll and butter at dinner but the food was OK, apart from the illiterate waiting staff the overall service was OK. What saved this place from being marked as a poor was the breakfast, self service, the sausages are to die for and there are not many UK hotels that serve American style crispy bacon, I love crispy bacon, found out where they get their sausages from and I’m getting then delivered! Fabulous sausages! The parking here is better than the Pier but if the Russians ever invade, I’m coming here because they’ll never find the place! The signage in the dark is terrible!! When we checked out we weren’t asked about our stay, they just took the money. Would we stay here again or have an evening meal, No! Would we have breakfast here, most definitely Yes!

I booked this hotel as a birthday treat but found it all positively average I’m afraid. There were works taking place which I realise can’t be helped but we were not notified. The room was not practical at all given that I had booked downstairs for someone with mobility issues. The room was dark and dingy and there was only a shower over the bath which my partner was unable to get into and so was unable to shower PM or AM during our stay. The room was a little cold but we were able to adjust this to make it warmer. The staff in general were not what I would call friendly and efficient given the cost and reputation of the hotel. I think I expected the best and was therefore disappointed. The arrangement of a courtesy car to take us up the road to the Talbooth was very helpful and the lady that did this service was so lovely so a big thank you to her she helped make our evening. We were very disappointed to be served a buffet breakfast, again I thought that this hotel would have been table service. However I have to say the breakfast was very nice, a great selection and all kept very warm and well replenished. Overall from a celebration and value for money perspective we were both disappointed and as a result when we visit the Talbooth again (which was excellent) we wouldn’t stay here again.

We have been coming to dine off and on for years, but unfortunately last night, the service was poor. We even cleared our own table of dirty dishes, and had to wait far too long for drinks etc. Also, £6.50 for a roll, and £37.50 for a bottle of Prosecco, the prices are way too high, and the standard of food and portion sizes did not reflect this. Shame.

I understand the no booking etc. and it was the weekend, however - one and a half hour wait for a table then another hour and a half after ordering for starters is too much. When I went to ask where our food was I was met with the most smarmy man I have ever met who told me that I hadn’t ordered the food three hours ago! I know. I turned my back on him rather than punch him in the face. Overall we were there for 4 hours for two courses that were nothing amazing, absolute disgrace with no apology or warning of the wait. I’m never going back. They were busy serving a party in the separate room but never told us. Also, please don’t send out teenagers to face the music because your senior members can’t deal with it. Terrible.

I still ate nearly all of it as I didn't want to wait for another meal to be made but when I informed the waiter that I thought at least one was still frozen in the middle and the others not warm or melted either, there was no apology whatsoever, I was just told they were freshly made and not frozen. We are locals and have visited many times over the years. Recently the standard of the food has really gone downhill & doesn’t reflect the higher prices on the menu. We were served a room temperature bottle of white wine which we had to ask to be changed for a cold one - the duck tacos were nice as usual, however, the chicken Kiev was dry and was floating in a watery, tasteless stock & the brownie was so dry it crumbled to pieces - we didn’t even eat it. It’s such a shame as the setting is beautiful and the staff are lovely but we really can’t justify spending the money on such substandard food & therefore unfortunately we will not be returning. The food used to be so much better.

When you think you will treat yourself to a meal willing to pay more money for it but I was so wrong. We were sat down with the main menu without the small special menu so we picked from the main menu which was the only one given. Being asked whether we dined there before and I said yes and aware of putting in the order ourselves meaning not much of a service. Funnily enough, the staff next to us was offered to have their orders taken by the staff, maybe they are either generous tipper or regular customers 🤷‍♀️ We both had the soft shell crab and it was okay but my rice with the duck was extremely salty. I sent it back and the manager came to explain to me about there isn’t any salt in it but soya sauce and I was brought up with soya sauce so I know it is still very salty. Come on, if you don’t know the saltiness of the sauce you use, it is not used for colouring which in this case, the rice was very dark hence over seasoned with soya sauce. Very disappointed and been offered to have either chips, new potatoes or mashed potatoes. Honestly it wasn’t what I wanted but well, I chose mashed potatoes and was presented back to me with the duck and a pot of soya sauce with mashed, it was laughable really. The cheese board was okay but not keen on those fancy cardboard crackers. To say the least, don’t think I want to spend another £28 for a main again. That’s one restaurant off my list

Sunday lunch. Beautiful location. Lovely weather. My chicken Caesar salad starter was ok, not sprcial with a few outer leaves (why?) Limp to spoil it. Main was roast serloin beef with roast potatoes, yorkshire pudding green beans and Is cauliflower. The beef was full of sinew. We tried steak knifes but it was too chewy. They tried replacing a serving but it was the same. £25 for the main is totally not justified. The manager asked if we realised it is serloin. I felt insulted perhaps i should have pointed out i have had it 100s of times. No real effort to follow up. I think they know the food is substandard, and dont care. Roast potatoes soggy, green beans barely cooked. Yorkshire pudding crispy but no body to it. Chocolate browny pudding a little dry. Plus points. Proper napkins. Cheerful service. Lovely gardens.

I stayed for two nights in a standard double room. Warm friendly reception. Walking up the stairs to my room, I couldn't help but notice how tired it looked. The carpet is very warn and stained, the bannisters are in real need of a paint. It looked grubby, shame because this could be improved at nor much expense. My room was very clean and inviting. It overlooked the car park with distant views of the landscape. The only problem was the blind, I could not keep the blind up for some light as the windows are quite low and people arriving in their cars could see me. A venetian blind would be better, to adjust for privacy, but also keep the light in. The bed was comfortable although the duvet was lumpy and the cover to big for the duvet. The pillows were nice. The en suite shower room was perfect. Big cubicle, lovely elemis products, and nice towels. Soundproofing was a real issue. Let's just say I could hear guests in their bathroom, sounded like they were in my bathroom. I don't know if it was just my room with seriously poor soundproofing or a problem in the whole hotel. Breakfast was good and Dinner was average, I expected more given the price. Every member of staff that I met were friendly and could not do enough for me.

Staff were polite and friendly but unfortunately the whole service was very slow, we waited an hour and half just for our main course, in total we were there for 4 hours, I have a feeling our order got lost as there were bigger groups of people who came in long after us and they had finished 3 courses and gone. We had to eventually ask the waiter where our food was .One of the main courses we ordered was the milsom burger, which was not edible at all, it came out black and hard, I personally would not have sent it out like that, so I was very disappointed and it was not cheap either, but they did refund us the money for it. On a better note the rest of the food was lovely, there were 6 of us and we all had 3 courses. We sat outside and there was a beautiful garden for the kids to run around in, so that kept them occupied. The whole grounds were very pretty. I would like to say I would give milsom a second chance, but I'm just not sure.

My family and I stopped for some lunch at milsoms Hotel on bank holiday weekend , there was a nice selection of food on various different menus (gluten free menu-desert menus-kids menu etc) however about five minutes in the whole restaurant had a power cut which seemed to cause the managers to go into panic mode as they all ran a bit around the restaurant trying to figure out why the lights went off, then they came back on and the light above our table flicked, it felt like I was about to have a seizure! We were reassured by our lovely waiter Ollie that the lights would go back off and on again as it was on the generator, shortly after this did indeed happen and the electric was fixed, for the rest of our experience our waiter was very friendly and accommodating and made sure we were always happy and looked after, my daughter wanted to sit at the large table at the top of the stairs however there was only three of us, dispute this he was extremely accommodating and let us sit there, I hope my compliments get passed on to him as he made us all very happy

How long is acceptable to wait for a starter? We waited around 35 minutes which I find unacceptable. We arrived around 7pm and did not receive our starters until around 8pm, the general manager dumped our food on our table and made a brisk apology about the chef burning our bread. We’d already asked two waiters when our food was going to be served so perhaps this is why the manager served our food. The rest of our meal was ok although but because the delay we ended up ordering extra drinks. On leaving we spoke to a waiter about the poor service, this fell on deaf ears so when it was time leave/pay I spoke to the general manager and stated that the service had been unacceptable and that I would would not be paying for the starters. The bill still came to around £100 which is was happy to pay. Almost immediately the general manager said “if you don’t pay for the starters I’ll call the police” to which I said no problem I’ll explain to them if necessary, the general manager then proceeded to call the police causing embarrassment to my daughter and partner. The police were not particularly interested. I held my ground and the manager billed me for the meal minus the starters. The whole experience was not great and in future I will be spending my money at other local (and superior) places such as The Sun or The Marlborough in Dedham. Had my daughter not been with us it’s possible I’d have not been so assertive but the poor service meant it was getting late and we had a drive up to Norfolk following the meal. I don’t usually complain or write reviews but this was an exceptional experience and people should be warned of what to expect if they have the audacity to complain of clearly poor service.

Lunch here at Milsoms was very disappointing for me - it was my first visit and probably my last. My first course of truffle and mushroom soup was delicious and I expected similar quality for mains. However, I was soon to be disappointed with the fish course, with hardly any flesh on a small piece of plaice, accompanied by three roast jacket potatoes but with raw samphire scattered over the whole assembly. The waiters seemed unapproachable and surly. My companions had staple fare of burgers, chips, scotch eggs and the like and they were happy with what they had been served. Coffee and ice cream were good. So, good café food but definitely not a quality restaurant. I think this place has unrealized potential but will need an improved approach to realize proper cooking.

Very disappointed in the quality of the food. Prawn cocktail starter wet clearly defrosted prawns that were small and no flavour - service slow. So sad to see what was once a lovely place to go is now very average - will not to going back disappointed as it once was a lovely treat

My husband booked the private dining at Milsoms for my 60th birthday celebrations and we also stayed in one of the deluxe rooms. From the first welcome at check in when we arrived through to checkout, nothing was too much trouble and the staff made every effort to ensure that things went smoothly and that we all had a good time. The library where we had our celebration meal was beautifully set up , the menu had plenty of vegan options at our request and the food was delicious. The consistency of the service was brilliant and our experiences at the bar, at breakfast and in the restaurant in the evening were all excellent. I highly recommend Milsoms, it is beautiful, busy and relaxed and for us it was the perfect weekend.

Went there for late Sunday lunch, 7 family members, got there at 1530, we were sat at a already visually used empty table with only 5 chairs, ordered our food, no Sunday roast meals available of which there had only been one meat choice anyway, no vegetables to order as a side order, ridiculous, only 4 of us ordered a starter, it was nearly 2hrs after our arrival before the main course was served to us, mine and another’s was only luke warm. We all had ordered pretty straight forward type of meals from the poor remaining choice, 2 Burgers and chips, 2 sausage and mash, then one veggie and 2 others one of which apparently not very nice. Deserts didn’t seem to be a problem. The restaurant tho sees to have lost it ways. One member is returning this coming week with another group, I shall be interested to hear how that goes. To be fair the staff were all polite. The men’s toilets were in a poor state with both urinals out of order. This restaurant has in the past been viewed as very good but this my 2nd poor experience in a row in recent months. The previous time I had just thought it a one off bad day. I do not intend revisiting.

Absolutely wonderful restaurant with great menu selection catering for all. Unhurried even though they were busy and unique style of writing your choices down and handing to waiters. Really prompt food delivery. Excellent flavours and portions. A bit more seasoning on the steaks and chops would have made ours perfect but that was easily remedied with condiments and sauces. A bit tricky to find as very dark on the approach in the evening and a couple of sharp turns so drive carefully

It is a well known venue, drop in , no booking which is fine. The quality of the food was as expected, my colleagues Beef Pie looked great, I was jealous ! My Fish Pie was a bit average, heavy on the Potato. The room struck a little cold.

i should have called before i went to check how busy it was , i didn't really think about it being end of jan and everyone using vouchers that run out at end of jan , we got a taxi so too late to change mind when we got in and realised we would have to sit in the heated outside area a bit chilly although they have heaters also not quite the same atmosphere you feel a bit neglected , food was good , but they forgot a couple of drinks we ordered , i feel its not so bad out there in the summer as all the doors are open and you dont feel as closed off 😢

Please change your dreadful menus. They are crumpled and dirty. The clip board needs to go - it’s like going on a school trip with your worksheet! No style here. The food was a little better today, the fish was particularly good. Lots to commend but the menus - please consider a complete change.

It’s been a while since I last visited. I left after 15 minutes, never to return again. A really shoddy experience. Exceptionally poor staff who ignored us even though there were few other diners. Not allowed to go to the bar. A very limited and overly expensive menu for the cuts of meat offered. I remember this as a thriving enjoyable experience - not anymore. We won’t be back. If the staff can’t be bothered to serve us I can’t be bothered to come again. Think twice before you visit ….

Thank you to the welcoming, helpful staff at Milsom’s for making our Christmas lunch, evening buffet, stay overnight and Boxing Day breakfast such a wonderful experience. Third time lucky as we’ve had 2 prior Christmas trips - to stay with this group at Kesgrave or Dedham - cancelled due to Covid. Huge compliments to Cameron as he was a polite, professional and has deservedly won the Staff Member of the Year award! Well done to the kitchen for getting everyone served promptly with a delicious Christmas lunch. Thank you so much for giving us a Christmas to remember.

We had a very nice lunchtime meal with decent portions and good quality ingredients. The only thing that detracts from the experience is the notepad and pencil used to order the courses - fine for a cheaper establishment but when most of the mains are £20+ it seems a little wrong that someone can’t come over and take your order!

Went for lunch on a Friday. Lovely location, atmosphere and decor. Started with duck tacos and bao buns, both really super yummy. Mains were a burger and steak and kidney pudding which were very nice. Had ice cream and sticky toffee pudding for afters and was disappointed with the sticky toffee pudding as it was pretty dry, tasteless and solid. Came with sauce, but not nearly enough! Overall was a nice experience and we would return, but it's an expensive restaurant and for the price point was expecting a bit more of a wow factor for the food, as well as perhaps a more attentive service. This might have been because when we visited the restaurant was full and they seemed a bit understaffed.

I have been in this Wagas about six times since it opened. Of those six visits, three times I was told they didn't have the ingredients to make my favourite dish, the 72, Katsu curry (including on my most recent visit on the 24th of March.) They maybe lying and it is a staffing issue, not sure. Never had this issue at any other Wagas though, which is why I mention it here. Clearly it is not managed as well as it should be.
