The Albatross in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

So we stumbled across this restaurant while wandering the streets of St Ives, after reading about a certain fish and chip shop in the harbour and some mediocre reviews we decided to eat there. The place is lovely, clean and has a very nice vibe to it. We went for the lunchtime special Fish and chips with a cup of tea (but you could have had a glass of fizzy drink too) all for a £14.95 per head. Portions were really good we had to take a takeaway box in the end to take what was left over. Chips were nice and crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside and let's not forget about the fish it had a nice thin crispy batter not drenched in oil, and the fish was light and flaky just hit the right spot. Overall we were really pleased with our experience and the only shame was the fact there were not too many people there as it was a bit off the harbour, bit sad as the food was superb and they deserve more customers.

Very friendly staff and so helpful. Fish and chips superb, lovely crispy batter and the fish pure white, chips crispy and food piping hot. Service was excellent and would highly recommend a visit.

Lovely meal and staff very knowledgable and accommodating for gluten free guests with a separate fryer and even gluten free curry sauce and vinegar! Friendly servers and even dog friendly! All food was delicious and so many options!! Couldn’t recommend more!

We came at a quiet time and easy to get a table. We had the Tacos which were excellent and the lunchtime special fish and chips (which represented good value). All freshly prepared to order.

Got takeaway fish and chips, ordered on line and collected. Piping hot, ready on time and delicious, best curry sauce ever and lovely crispy batter.

Looked up best fish and chips in St Ives and By The Sea had good, and some great reviews, so when we finally found it up a narrow street (Chapel St) it was disappointing to see only one table taken. Wasn't sure that was a good sign, but based on the reviews we went in: great decision! Nice welcome and after a beer and a glass of wine to whet our appetites, we elected for the lunch time special of battered cod, chips, mushy peas, tartare sauce. We also ordered a portion of curry sauce. The menu had a good selection of other dishes but we were on a mission to get fish and trips. The food arrived in short order, all freshly cooked, piping hot and a very nice portion of food it was too! The fish was lovely, chips just right and nicely accompanied by the sides and sauces. At £14.95, including a cup (well a mug actually) of tea it was a bargain, not least being away from the throngs of tourists on the harbour front desperately looking for somewhere to sit and eat. They were all missing out on this gem. This is definitely somewhere to really enjoy your fish and chips. Happily, the place started filling up, so that was good and they would all surely enjoy the fare!

As a fan of his previous fish restaurant, I was excited to see that Chef Ovi and his wonderful wife had taken over a local takeaway... Needless to say, though the premises has downsized, the quality has not. Amazingly fresh Cod, perfectly cooked chips, moreish homemade tartare sauce, and service with a smile from the great Front-of-House team! I will certainly be telling people about this new venture and I can't wait to return. Steve

I can definitely recommend the Cod and chips which I had with curry sauce. Most enjoyable and cooked very well. The batter was crispy and thin which is the way I prefer it cooked.

My husband and I came across this little gem when walking from the car park to the harbour. We ordered cod each and one portion of chips. Very friendly staff serving and gave us a pot of homemade tartar sauce on the house We found a bench near the harbour and tucked in - absolutely yummy and the best battered cod we have had for a long time, generous portion of chips and plenty for two. Really enjoyed the tartar sauce.What a great find and no hesitation recommending this take out

After seeing fab reviews about this place really have started to wonder about what people see in places and food as frankly this place was awful; not only very expensive but poorly cooked food; chips are supposedly shaped pieces of potato soft on the inside and crispy on the outside; these were more like scrap ends left over after cutting chips that when fried just became an oily mess; fish was flavourless with batter undercooked and underwhelming; mushy peas had no seasoning and obviously not home made out of some plastic bag as was the curry sauce; so not only appalling food but over priced; get yourself up north lad learn how to make proper fish and chips or go back to school as frankly this was awful.

Best chips in St Ives!! I have been coming to St Ives every year for 24 years and this year decided to have chips from the Albatross. They we’re cooked fresh to order, so crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle Loved it so much headed back again the next night and they were just as good!!

U am one fussy person with chips and there chips were lovely perfect infact my kids loved there chips and sasage n gerkins unfortanitly no were to sit but food was lovely

We have been coming to Cornwall for the last 10 years and have visited St.Ives for the last few years and have to say the Albatross is definitely the best fish and chips in town! The batter and quality of the fish is finger licking good and the chips?! my goodness absolutely delicious!! 10/10.They also top it with excellent customer service.

Very bad food! Chips were very hard, surprised they served chips in that state! Not worth the money!

In the area for a week and tried this Chippy on a Saturday night. It turned out to be a good decision as these were some of the best Fish and Chips we have had in a long time. So good that we went back later the next week. Definitely recommend this place rather than a large chain type chippy experience.

We had just arrived in St Ives and fancied some fish on Friday. Round the corner from our holiday let was Albatross. Not wanting to walk to far, we gave it a whirl.My cod and chips were delicious and I savoured every mouthful, perfect!My only gripe would be, they should use a good gravy rather than instant. As we wasted £3 on Bisto.Highly recommend the cod, cooked well with delicious batter.

First visit to the Albatross but won't be the last. We had take away haddock and chips with mushy peas. The fish is cooked fresh when you order, so you may have to wait a few minutes, but it's worth it. Decent sized portion of chips, and lovely big fish. The fish is lightly battered, just how we like it. The staff were both friendly and chatted with us while we were waiting. Nice clean chippy, will definitely visit again when we're in St. Ives.

Absolutely exquisite cuisine served by two strapping young men who were very professional and polite. I shall make my return to this establishment posthaste.

It was the annual raft race in St Ives tonight, and we fancied fish & chips. All the usual places along the front were rammed, but being local I know of Albatross (which is off the beaten track along Chapel Street).I was served within minutes. I haven't been there for a while, but was aware there had been a change of ownership. It's nice to see that it's fallen into the hands of someone with a bit of business sense. For example, largely printed menu boards now above the counter (good marketing as people can see options when they are closed), they also now sell ice creams and coffees - brilliante for those that so often are waiting for buses in the square and they have retained close to the same menu which is fantastic for locals and regulars.The fish was the best I've had from there ever, and the chip portions were generous.I'd recommend a visit for sure.

Needed a quick takeaway and this was ideally located for us, opposite Co op and near the taxi ranks.First thing to note is they cook your fish to order, for me a real plus.We had 4 to cater to, ordered scampi, regular and small cod and Haddock.Batter was light and not as crunchy as traditional chip shop- I prefer it this way, my wife prefers the crunchy style.As it was cooked fresh all 4 dishes were excellent.Scampi was a good portion and succulent, Cod meaty but the star was undoubtedly the Haddock, very large and amazing taste.Service was adequate-teenagers in a chip shop will never kill you with kindness!.Took about 15 minutes to cook fresh, good portion of chips and all served in individual boxes.At £29.50 with 2 x mushy peas and a curry sauce very good value.Just enough time to dash to the chaotic Co Op for a few bottles of wine.Will be going back before the end of the week and doubling up on the haddock I suspect.

We placed our order for 20 take away meals including cod, haddock, jumbo sausages, chicken nuggets, mushy peas, curry sauce & large portions of chips with 1 hours notice. Our order was ready on time & it was all well cooked & hot. The fish was delicious being very fresh with big white flakes. The batter was perfect with just the right amount of coating. We will definitely be placing another order on our next holiday in St Ives.

I walked passed this chippy earlier in the day & decided to get a take out that evening. Ordered & paid, then waited whilst it was being cooked. I like that you have to wait because it’s then fresh & hot. It was worth the wait the chips were delicious & the fish a good size. We will definitely go there again. The staff were polite & friendly.

We happened to stumble across this quaint chip shop in St Ives after a long day and felt a very warm welcome the moment we stepped inside. The prices were very reasonable and the chips were crispy & not dry. The fish had a light batter and was cooked to perfection. We left very satisfied and enjoy chatting to the owners about their products. Rest assured that despite living in Falmouth and having the Harbour Lights I may think again where I go for such reasonably priced and tatsy chips!!

Disappointed. Safe to say if you advertise to vegans on your front shop window you're gonna get them excited to come in. Now you only advertised chips as vegan, but for the sake of you advertising them I thought I'd ask about the sides as some of them were bound to be vegan. This was a good week or so back, but felt it needed to be said for the business sake. So anyway I asked, and hesitantly was told that the mushy peas and curry sauce was vegan (was hoping gravy as well but they'll do). So I ordered the curry sauce. So problem number 1 was one of the lads, skinny fair haired type, didn't seem to enjoy his work. Being only on the other side of the counter it doesn't look good when one member of staff is constantly telling off and muttering to the other lad (and in an unprofessional manner too), made me slightly uncomfortable on the other side of the counter. Turns out the other lad made the mistake of letting me order curry sauce when they hadn't any left. Not the end of the world to be honest. So as the poor fella politely (and professionally) asked me, I went for the mushy peas instead. This wasn't though, before I asked if they were sure no other side's were vegan (really held out for the gravy), to which the skinny fair haired type mutters quite bluntly and carelessly "to be honest mate, I don't even know what a vegan is". At that point I just wanted my chips and to be on my way. It doesn't take much time to learn that vegans don't eat animal products. That mostly covering meat, fish, crustaceans, dairy, eggs, and honey. If you're going to advertise vegan food on your menu front of shop, expect it to encourage vegan customers and for the occasional one to get curious about unlisted vegan menu items. If the fella didn't know, or wasn't sure if the others contained animal products, that's all he needed to say. But him saying he's not even sure what a vegan is, after having already recommended me what he thought were vegan sides, is quite insulting and off putting to be honest. Otherwise I'd have said thanks for advertising your chips as vegan made a nice emergency stop whilst struggling to find a proper place to sit down and eat. And hats off to the other guy (dark hair, wore a man u top I believe) who knew how to do proper customer service.

Sat at the rear of the cafe where there is a small seating area .St Ives was so busy that every fish and chip shop had queues on a summer Friday evening.Once ordering we sat and waited for what seemed an age to get our food.When it did arrive plentiful and really hot.....but the cafe was working flat out and we felt that it took too long to arrive.

Good fish and chips but they did take a while, apparently the chips had not been delivered? Even so they were tasty and “freshly cooked “.

went in to get a take away and was told we would have to wait half an hour as they had a big order to complete, not my idea of fast food ! Went to the Harbour fish and chip restaurant/take away instead and got fantastic fish and chips and brilliant service within 5 minutes.

We came here just before the England game and had to wait for only 10 minutes before our food was ready. Great fish and chips. Hidden gem as we normally go to the front. Just by chance we walked past it and found it.

After a lovely meal at nearby Indian Restaurant I was in need of a palate cleanser and walked past the chip shop which also sold ice cream.

The kids love our special take on “take-away madness” in St Ives and The Albatross always figures high on the list of ‘must haves’.

We found Albatross Fish & Chips on Google as it was near our Holiday Village. Very nice area of S Ives. The shop is slightly hidden in a road but you can easily find it once your out of the car.

Visitors need to support these small local businesses and albatross is off the main tourist streets but worth seeking out. Fab service, friendly staff and great packaged fish and chips. Really tasty and worth a visis

All our food was very tasty and served really hot which was fab after being down the front on a freezing day. Staff very friendly too.

Great local fish and chips behind the cinema. Decent sized portions and all fish wash freshlt fried when we were there. Two fish and chips, ketchup, jumbo sausage and a pickled egg all for under £20. Great batter and great chips

Freshly cooked fish, huge portions of chips, good chat while waiting, always get my fish and chips from this quiet back street place rather than the more obvious (and not as good) places on the harbour front.

Ordered fish, chips, mushy peas and a pea fritter. Could not fault it! Cooked to perfection.

Staff were polite enough but food awful. Ordered 2 cod and chips. Batter was spongy, slimey and soggy. A fish shop in a seaside town should be able to cook fish properly. Truly awful.

It has been a year since we called last time and things have changed, but it still remains a super little chippy, the secret to their success is fresh cooked food that is worth the wait, nice portions and clean.

Conseguimos una salchicha con mantequilla y patatas fritas así como una 1 / 4 de pollo y papas fritas. Cocinados a la orden y era agradable y fresco. Las patatas fritas eran un poco exageradas, pero estaban bien.

No es un mal lugar poco pescado y chip, teníamos salchichas y patatas fritas y un fishcake, todo cocinado allí y luego, de esta comida que llevaba ahí mucho tiempo.

Albatross is a Fish & Chip shop I have used for several years. It now appears to be under new management and unfortunately it is not as good as it used to be. The menu has been reduced and a very large coffee machine brought in?. Whilst the fish and chips was ok it was nothing special in fact the batter on the fish was quite soggy. The fish was cooked but it always tastes better in crispy batter. Will probably try somewhere different next time I have fish and chips in St Ives.

The food is lovely and defiantly cannot be faulted, it is always great because they cook everything freshly to order. The staff really care about their customers, the taste and presentation of their food too. It's a really pleasant place to be especially after the renovation, and I really enjoyed it there!

This chip shop as had a revamp and is looking great , the staff are very nice and the fish and chips fantastic , what else can you say . try it for your self and you wont be disappointed

The staff are absolutely wonderful! I was served promptly as I entered the shop. The portion sizes are perfect, the fish was beautifully cooked and the chips... oh the chips are some of the best in Cornwall! This place is a must if you find yourself wondering into the beautiful town of St Ives.

Just arrived in St Ives on holiday and we were looking for a fish & chip dinner. This didn't disappoint! Portion size was very generous and the chips were delicious. Would definitely recommend!

Really nice food. Fresh fish with crispy batter. Great chips. The guy running it stayed open an extra 20 minutes so my wife and I could shelter from the rain. Great food, great people.

I read the reviews under the Terrible heading.I can't agree with them. Cod,chips and mushy peas were very good. Not lying in a pool of oil, batter cooked through. Polite staff. Called in as busy at home, no chance to cook, so off to the English takeaway. This is possibly the best in town. And as far as those reports on rudeness, I can only think it's the issue with the customer being a tad arrogant. Have seen and heard of the type.

I visited the albatross fish and chips, to collect some food for tea, and I had the best service along with some high quality food. I ordered cod and chips and the quality and quantity were both high!I wish the best luck to the staff and the shop, as we are going back home tomorrow

This chip shop used to have an excellent reputation. It has since changed hands and is now not only owned by kids but run by them too. They have no experience and do not have any kind of customer care between them. Me and my mate went for fish &a chips mushy peas and curry sauce. The staff made you wait an age to take your order, then kept taking orders instead of serving you. They have changed- now they box your fish and chips saying it's cheaper and when we had our meal the fish was greasy smaller yet more expensive. The chips were greasy and rubbery. When I complained to them the guy behind the counter tried everything to blame the price rise on the boxes they put the chips in and saying the new people were new to the job. Not my problem. When you serve food at that price make sure it's edible and that you treat everyone fairly and don't argue the toss when people complain. Overall very bad attitude toward complaints, bad service, bad good. Never again. 1 star is too generous for this place.

Tucked away from the main tourist roads, this fish and chip shop is well worth seeking out. Appearances are functional, but the product is superior. Delicious fish and chips freshly cooked by young, vibrant staff. Just be careful where you take them to eat - in St Ives the seagulls are equally fond of them!!

This was my boyfriends favourite meal of the holiday... The chips were really good and the battered cod melted in our mouths. Will definitely be using this place again, especially as our meal for four came to just twenty pounds!

Stand and wait while being told will be with you, few minutes later they start to take someone else's order ahead of me. So when I point this out they look at me as if I'm an alien. Anyway took at least 20 minutes for two fish and chips that weren't particularly good and very expensive. Bad experience , we won't be back. Has this place changed hands, or is just because it's being staffed by kids? Used to be best in town.

Called in for a fish on the way out of st Ives - what a delight! Server very friendly and chatted whilst they prepared my fresh fish. I have never tasted batter so light - would definitely recommend!

After a very good experience last year, we looked forward to a couple of visits here. However on this occasion, I found the experience very different (possibly due to changing hands). The service was nowhere near as friendly, and the small fish that I ordered was extremely disappointing. I wasn't expecting it to be the size of a goldfish.

Whilst The Albatross has changed hands in the last few months, you would expect that new owners would put in the extra effort to maintain the standard or even hopefully improve it. Alas, this is not the case. After 3 years of very loyal purchases I am now off to another establishment.

We enjoyed fish and chips at The Albatross on the first and last evenings of our recent family holiday to St Ives. While the setting is not the most picturesque in town, it is away from the threat of diving seagulls and we were able on both occasions to eat our "takeaway" at the tables at the front window. (There is also a café area behind, though I don't know how much extra that might cost.)The food was cooked to order and so we didn't mind the short wait to receive freshly-cooked fish. The portions and overall value were decent and the service was friendly and attentive: the lady brought our food over to us, along with extra trays so we could easily divide the portions of chips between the children.The sign outside stated that this café has been going for 98 years, so we left in the hope of returning in 2018 to wish it a happy centenary!

After coming to this fish and chip shop for many years on our annual family holiday I can say that this year the quality has plummeted. Usually my father and I head straight there to get our fish and chips and honestly the food was a disgrace. The chips were charred and almost like crisps and the cod had so much soggy batter around it that I could not finish. Staff seemed very friendly and polite but it's definitely not the place that it used to be!

Called at the albatross for tea after a long journey to St Ives. We sat in the cafe part it was reasonably clean apart from the cobwebs on the walls that had been missed. The staff are all very nice and friendly but it's new management and it just needs managing better. Food lots of it and very nice but maybe a little pricey but worth it.

Came here on Friday 29th July around 3pm after a wander round St Ives harbour. Set back on a little side street we decided our family of 5 would pop in for something to eat and we were not disappointed. The cod and chips were beautiful (unfortunately the mushy peas were really dry and not edible) but my husband said the curry sauce was good. The guys serving were friendly and chatty and I wish I had a chance to go back for another portion before we came back to Nottingham as we failed to find another decent chip shop located in St Ives or Hayle where we were staying. Hoping to be back in Cornwall next year so will definitely be visiting again.

Now I've had a lot of fish and chips in my time and these were right up there. Chips were amazing (tasted triple cooked!) and the fish was perfectly cooked in a crispy batter. Not greasy at all. I'm getting hungry just writing this review. It's a few minutes walk from the coast but we had the food boxed and took a seat overlooking the harbour with a keen eye on the gulls overhead. Doesn't get much better than that!

The staff were very lovely and gave great service. Waited about 7 minutes to receive the food as its cook to order, so pretty quick.Huge portion size and I ordered a small!All in all great hidden chippy.

Visited here on a visit to St Ives. I ordered 4 chips open, 2 cod split into 4, 2 with mushy peas and one with curry sauce. Came to £21 and I waited and waited and waited some more!! After about 15-20mins put food was ready. We were advised not to eat it outside due to the seagulls so we ate at the small tables on the window. The fish and chips were extremely greasy and the staff didn't seem to know what they were doing. There were 4-5 customers who came in and they all waited for their food for ages. Not a good experience

Phoned 7pm no pies or steak puddings whatsoever why advertise we live here an if the place cannot offer what it advertises then time to call it a day

This place is worth a visit. Fish and chips was spot. Portion of mushy peas could be larger, £1 for small tub. Overall good and I would recommend this place.

Off the beaten track in St. Ives, (up by the co-op) in the alleyway, stopped here for a quick lunch while visiting St. Ives with Mother. Smell drew us in first as it smelt like clean, fresh oil and we weren't disappointed as it was cooked to order with crisp batter, lovely chips which were crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle. Friendly service and reasonably priced. Lovely.

This is without doubt the best fish and chips we have ever eaten. We visited last year and enjoyed our lunch so much that we had to return again, this time with Daughter in tow (Who is a fish and chip connoisseur!). She really enjoyed her cod and chips as did my husband and I. Lovely crispy batter, but not greasy. Chips cooked just right. Run by a lovely friendly and helpful lady and her husband (!). Super service and great value for money. Just how a chippy should (and used to) be. What more could you want from a chip shop? We will definately be returning.

My Mrs was suffering from sunburn so muggins was sent out to fetch tea! Found this chippy close by and it was superb. Best fish and chips I've had in ages and a lovely couple running it. Very reasonable and cooked fresh. They were perfect whilst watching the tv, although they didn't quite cure sunburn!!

Freshly cooked fish and chips by the seaside, hard to beat. Lovely freindly place, standard cod and chips is pretty generous, so think before going large.
