What a brilliant pub, went to see what everyone has been talking about. Great pub that is two different pubs in one. Somewhere nice to take the wife and family at the front then meet the mates or misses at the back (don’t tell the wife)

Wow, this place looks amazing. It’s by far the best place in town. The changes are just what the place needed. It’s basically two pubs in one. At the front it’s great for a quite drink with friends then everything you need in the pub in the back for a bit of fun, darts, pool, great TVs with sport on. What a great job you have done. As a Southwell resident I was excited to welcome and support the new Admiral Rodney owners for a couple of drinks after work with the hope of enjoying a great and well needed pub grub delicious meal .......... sadly for new owners the welcome just wasn’t there. And then the definitely not £9.50 a glass wine (apparently “Southwell prices”) was served in dirty dishwasher tasting glasses. The idea of enjoying a pub grub meal was quickly gone by a friend with 2 children coming out advising the food was “a word which isn’t accepted!”what an absolute shame. This pub is in the absolute heart of town with the opportunity of hitting upon not only the local residents plus families , local reguler frequenters, the after work working crowd, students plus The opportunistic passer bys. For me ...... NEVER again and I will not be recommending to ANYONE.

We dined here this evening on the first day open after refurbishment. The staff were very friendly and the food was great quality pub fare at sensible prices. The burgers, gammon steak and steak pie were all delicious. The desserts looked really nice too,but we didn’t have room. The refit is really nice and the sports bar is a great area to watch football. All in all a triumphant return! We will be back soon!

Very friendly- Good Covid secure procedures. Polite and brisk lunchtime service. Good selection of beers and real ale.

Loved our experience at The Rodney. We felt very welcome, with wonderful table service and we felt really safe with all the precautions that have been implemented to adhere to Covid restrictions. The food was delicious, with clean plates all round. I would thoroughly recommend The Rodney.

Overall really nice, lovely staff and a good warm environment. Very good appreciation of the lockdown rules .Had the rainbow burger, great salad and chips and briosh bun, and overall flavour, burger itself was a bit small compared to the bun. Vegetarian version seemed better but on balance good and recommended.

Had lunch with my husband today. The atmosphere was buzzy yet Felt safe. We both ordered steak and ale pie with rustic chips, gravy and seasonal veg. I had a Prosecco and my husband had peroni which was ice cold. Have to say it was the best pie we had both ever tasted and the gravy was rich and flavoursome. The staff were friendly and efficient. Highly recommend the The Admiral Rodney Hotel for a Saturday afternoon lunch Top notch!

Booked Sunday lunch and then ordered our food online. They are taking the Covid safety procedures very seriously and have well organised systems. The service is excellent - friendly, smiley and efficient and the food really tasty. We can thoroughly recommend the roast pork and chicken dishes. We will no doubt return.

My partner and I ate here two nights this week. The first on Wednesday with 50% off and the second on Thursday. Both nights equally excellent value for money. We will certainly be here again if we're in the area.

Went here last night as still giving 50% off food in September- normal portions well cooked and staff very helpful. Young Mann made us lovely liqueur coffees even though not on the menu. A lovely little find in a very pretty town

Tonight was our 1st visit to the Admiral Rodney but I don't think it will be our last. They are doing 50% off food thru September, no skimping on portions, quality or service. Traditional old fashioned pub with stone fireplace & oak beams. The young man who went out of his way to make us 2 Liqueur Tia Maria coffees, was an exceptional employee. We thoroughly enjoyed the evening & rate the experience 5 star

Had a really lovelyevening meal here today and also lunch a few weeks ago. The food is really good, nice atmosphere and the service friendly and professional - and they are continuing with a good discount offer into September which is a bonus. Good measures in place, safe and clean.

Just been well looked after by Val who ensured things were safe and clean, thankyou . Have eaten there three times and the pot roast , pie and mash and prawn risotto were all great , cooked to a much higher standard than expected with good fresh ingredients . The specials menu shows imagination and it's nice to eat food in a friendly place served by people who care about what they do . I would recommend The Rodney to anyone eating out in Southwell

I went here yesterday with 3 friends and sat outside in the sun .. The meals were gorgeous .. I had halloumi burritos they were so nice,served with chips and salad .. The portion of onion rings were fantastic too .. All 4 meals were fab .. The service was so warm and welcoming and we will definitely be returning. Special mention to Clare for looking after us she is amazing a total credit to the company..

Excellent food with a great real traditional country English pub style backdrop. It is located in the centre part of the Southwell Town and gets many walk in's.

There was six of us, including three grandchildren and as it was a warm evening we booked a table outside. The service was amazing. Nothing was too much trouble - the girls all chose slightly different takes on the menu. The food was fresh and well cooked and delivered with a smile.We felt very safe - visors worn by staff, details taken and hand sanitiser available on entrance. The waitress took us to our table and all food and drink was brought to us. For value, service and quality we couldn’t fault it.

Great location, good food. We booked via the app (very smooth experience with plenty of availability). The Rodney is somewhere we have wanted to eat at for over a year but never got round to it. The government discount scheme enticed is out and it was worth it. Beautiful salt and pepper squid for starters and fish and chips for main. The batter looked a little over done for my liking but still very nice. The burrito went down well with our son, not too spicy but great flavour. I’d welcome the chance to come back and try other parts of menu as the range seemed a little limited compared to what I remember seeing advertised in the past. Service was good and tables are well spaced out and marked up when clean. It felt a safe experience.

My cousin and I had a lovely lunch today at the Admiral Rodney. I had booked a table on-line, which was no problem and as the weather was better than expected we sat outside. Food was delicious, staff are very friendly and welcoming and they had in place all COVID-19 safety measures. It was the first time that we had been out to eat since lockdown and it was great.

The quality of the Sunday Carvery was exceptional - the meats are supplied by Stoppards Family butcher. I had the beef served how you like it - for me medium rare. I also had the pork which came with the most delicious crackling.

A great selection of food with pub classics and some fancier stuff. As seafood lovers my wife and I particularly enjoyed the white bait (starter) and mussels (main course). Service by Josh and Claire was excellent.

The food here is simply outstanding. An amazing Sunday carvery and they offer a full alternative menu too on Sundays. The service was equally good. We met the head chef who's a great guy and the food is brilliant. Large portions & absolute quality. They cater brilliantly for kids too. Excellent value. Looking forward to a return visit!

We booked into the restaurant for a large family birthday meal and all 12 of us loved it. Fantastic, tasty and hot food. The chef is a very talented person. We will be visiting again. Highly recommend

there were four of us all wanting something different. No problem. Because of the low prices, I expected small portions, I was wrong, in fact there was too much, but it was so good I kept eating it, knowing it would impact on my evening meal. I was right. The chips i had were crisp and perfectly cooked. I had Hunters' chicken, well most of it, the portion was really too big. The staff were friendly, the place was clean and well ordered.

So booked a birthday meal at 6pm a few days before going. Was asked whether we wanted to eat in the restaurant( but we would be the only ones in there) or the conservatory(part of the bar). Was advised that the Rugby would be on in the bar and that it may be noisy. Said we would choose when we arrived. When we got there we were shown into the conservatory which only had 3 tables as the rest had been taken out by the rugby watchers. We asked to go in the restaurant. We were then told that the restaurant was being used for viewing the Forest game and that reservations were for 7.30pm onwards.I told them we had a reservation for 6pm n judging by the response they clearly hadn't realised that. They said sorry but we could use the restaurant if we wanted to but the football crowd mite be a bit loud. My overall impression was that they would rather have a room full of football guzzling drinkers than a restaurant n that they were clearly not used to looking at their reservations. Consequently we left as it was clear they were not bothered about us.My advise, forget about this restaurant as it's clearly an after thought n u are not guaranteed a meal in peace. Very poor organisation n as a local I feel very let down. My custom will not be going to this place again nor will I recommend it.

Popped in after a visit to the minster for a decent pint, and then returned later for meal and a few more ale's.Very busy on a Thursday at about 7.30 for food, every table occupied, waited in conservatory for fifteen minutes then tables became available in main body of bar. Small, cosy atmosphere with 8 out of 10 burger. Nice lady serving, would recommend.

We booked for an evening meal and there were four of us. The staff were lovely and our young lady waitress friendly and helpful.I had the mushroom and onion pie which was delicious. The others had beef pies which were nice but one had scampi which could only be described as mediocre. The chips were very overcooked and in the case of the scampi order were very hard. We had gravy to soften ours but she had to leave most of hers. The puddings were fine and nicely presented. The food was not anything to get excited about and we would not go again for that reason,. Also for what it was it was rather expensive. The staff were the redeeming feature and should be given full marks.

Writing on behalf of the Southwell Running Club Committee. We had an amazing Christmas Party evening at the Rodney. 40 of us in total and all fed extremely well with great quality food. Good service, will certainly be booking here again for our 2020 Christmas Meal.

Back in the UK for a holiday from New Zealand, it was great to have such a well cooked, & well presented, tasty Sunday roast at the Admiral Rodney.

We hired the function room at The Rodney for our works Christmas Party, and had one of our local bands to play. The room was cosy and inviting and perfect for anywhere between 40-60 people.

I was intrigued to try food at the Admiral Rodney as I had seen a variety of vegan options and even a special vegan night on Thursdays. I ordered the soup starter with bread which was really tasty and for main course I initially tried to order the burger yet interestingly the burger bun is not vegan as it is a brioche bun? I thought this was odd so thought i'd try something else instead. I ordered the vegan sausages with hash. Big mistake. I have tried most plant based sausages available and have never tried any like these, as they were really soft and just tasted like onion. As this was the centre piece for the dish I was disappointed so asked for a refund. The employee was really understanding and I was offered an alternative meal but I no longer had time so got a full refund for that dish. I really wanted to enjoy the food in this local pub but was really underwhelmed and will skip the food next time.

Excellent Xmas meal for our theatre group. Service a little slow but worth the wait. Good value too I had smoked salmon and salmon mousse with foccia for starters husband had pea and feta tart, table raved about tart, my mousse wasn’t a mousse was mixed with cream cheese was fine but too large a portion of cream cheese. We both had turkey only ‘complaint ‘ too much!! Deserts were delicious. We all enjoyed the evening

A cold day yesterday in Southwell so decided the Admiral Rodney pub with its lovely warm fire was the place to be .My husband had the steak and ale pie I had the pork and crispy crackling ,both from the main menu. I honestly don’t think I have ever tasted pork so tasty or tender in my life, my husbands pie was just as good .The staff were wonderful nothing was too much trouble thank you all .

The pub was incredibly busy, but the landlady (forgot her name, sorry!) was moving around with incredibly efficiency, making sure everybody was well looked after. Didn't expect to get table service, especially during a football match, which was a nice surprise.The food was great. Really nice pub, thoroughly recommended.

Stayed in southwell for a few days and spent most of it in the admiral Rodney.

Our first visit to Southwell and so we went in here by chance. Food was good and service friendly, if a little slow - 30 minutes for 3 baguettes and a burger - which was a little annoying as we had a long journey ahead. However, would recommend it as a lunch venue in Southwell.

We visited the Admiral Rodney in September, choosing it because it's website advertised a Sunday carvery. Four of us ate in the restaurant and the carvery was wonderful, service was friendly and nothing was too much trouble. We returned to visit Southwell today and chose to eat at the Admiral Rodney again. This time we chose to eat in the bar area which had a lovely atmosphere and a log fire to warm us up. We were served by Val, who was friendly and helpful, and we ordered a range of dishes from the menu. We couldn't fault any of them - I particularly enjoyed the rhubarb and apple crumble! Look forward to a return visit!!

Live in Southwell but never eaten here before. Missed a treat. Excellent food and service. Will definitely be coming back. Valerie who served us was exceptional. 5*

A few weeks ago my husband and I popped into The Admiral Rodney for a lunchtime drink and snack. I mentioned to the staff, Val and Hayley, that I have diagnosed coeliac disease. They suggested things I could eat. I ordered the pate...but they returned to say that the chef, Wayne, was not totally happy to serve me this. He then, without being asked, came out to see me. He discussed my requirements...a snack...and put together a delicious meze board for me.

Thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon with the family and friends. Table service by Clare was amazing and very friendly helpful service by Dom and Hayley. Would recommend and visit again!

We ate here last night and can highly recommend a visit. The food was perfect. Freshly cooked and very tasty. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful. Candles on the table, and room dressed with a welcoming autumnal theme. The chef Wayne came out of the kitchen to tell us all about the menu, where the food was sourced etc. which added to the enjoyment. Claire and the team of waiting staff were excellent too. If you are looking for a venue for New Years Eve then this is somewhere to consider. We had sight of their New Years Eve menu which is fabulous. Thank you to the team at The Admiral Rodney, you work hard and have such a passion for what you do. Much appreciated.

Met friends for lunch today great value, well cooked, good selection, light lunch with free drink. Staff helpful and friendly good atmosphere restaurant at back for larger parties and outdoor seating in sunshine will go again soon

Visited with party of 7 and we all chose something different off the menu. Really good choice. Everyone pleased with their meal. Only downside was we were in the restaurant (only people in there) and therefore atmosphere a bit flat and service slow. Will definitely eat in bar next time.

Called in for a meal on route to are holiday, great food. And dog friendly really enjoyed are visit.the staff were really friendly.

My second visit to this pub and it just gets better. A great side beer garden with a live band last Saturday night inside it was vibrant with a great selection of drinks and enough staff to cope. Odd chairs and mixed furniture lots of different seating areas along with low ceilings make for an interesting layout. Highly recommended

Excellent vegetarian pies. A bugbear of mine is the too common assumption that we'll always want some delicate, ostentatiously middle-class salad from another continent. Sometimes we do, other times we want a hearty pie. Both options available here. Good work. Also: friendly staff, free water refills, cricket on the box, decent pint of Landlord. Well played all round.

Great place to have a few beers or take the family. Clean. Friendly professional staff. Roast beef was delicious. Kids loved the kids portion of mussels.

A lovely meal with friends served by Clare and prepared by head chef Wayne. The restaurant at the back of the bar is lit with candles and fairy lights and accoustic music plays through the speaker in the background. Really beautiful evening and made to feel very welcome. Will be back soon!

Four of us dropped in for dinner food and a couple of pints last night and we were all really happy with it. The chips were outstanding. I played it safe with a burger but I reckon I could have had anything on the menu and been happy given how good the bacon and stilton burger was. Timeless and comfortable pub setting, quality food you wouldn't expect for the price and friendly staff/landlady who was gracious in spite of an embarrassing customer. Highly recommended! (ps, whoever cobbled together that playlist did a stellar job).

On a sunny Tuesday afternoon, I had the pleasure of dropping into the Admiral Rodney. After perusing a menu filled with temptation, both my friend and I chose the Bacon Blue Burger. It was well cooked and flavoursome. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The drop of ale was equally enjoyable. I would recommend this to anyone with an hour to spare and a rumbling belly.

We had a meal with friends, 6 of us including one vegan. We all enjoyed the meal very much. Service was great from Val and Jess the manager was attentive. We will definitely go again!

We tried to order the advertised "pie and free pint" meal, to be told it was the wrong day for that. Am sure Wednesday WAS the actual day, but hey ho. We then ordered two burgers, a gin and a beer. £35 seemed a bit excessive? Especially as the burgers were under £12 each. Food OK, nothing special. Felt a bit ripped off to be honest. Won't be back.

Visiting relatives in Southwell , we went to The Admiral for dinner. The food was fantastic, fresh seasonal and lots of it !

The bar was quiet due to mid week, summer break. However, the service was brilliant, food was freshly cooked by will/Jordan.

This is about out 4th visit to The Admiral Rodney for dinner as a couple and with family, it is a lovely old country pub with a great atmosphere, the staff are really friendly and welcoming.

Although quiet, this is a hidden gem. Staff cant do enough for you and the food and drink are lively.

What an amazing experience at The Admiral Rodney.

I have coeliac disease and sometimes struggle for a large variety of food. The staff was really helpful and went through the menu telling me what was gluten free and asking the chef any questions if they was unsure. The food was delicious and I would highly recommend!

I was over the moon I had won the competition. Me and my friend went, the experience was fantastic from start to end. Valentine was our waitress, she is a joy to be around. We had an absolutely perfect lunch today at The Admiral Rodney. Great service and food. I had the fish and chips and my friends had the carvery which they thoroughly enjoyed. The pub is very welcoming to people and dogs. We had lunch in the courtyard with live music. I could have sat there for hours.

Excellent service, there was one lady on but multitasking was her forte. I ordered the liver which was exceptional! All other food looked excellent and all were very happy.

I arranged a school reunion for the Edward Cludd in Southwell. We needed a good venue with a private room, music PA, good food, outside seating. 10 out of 10 to all the staff and Jessica the landlady! We all had a great time and all went exactly to plan with their help, so can't thank them enough - well done and thanks!

We visited the Admiral on Friday night for tapas and live music, and safe to say we was not disappointed. We was seated in the restaurant and it looks beautiful, lovely decor and very relaxed! The tapas menu had lots of choice, and Josh the manager was very helpful with his recommendations. The food come out shortly after and it was AMAZING! We tried a little bit of everything and it tasted so nice. Wayne the head chef, come and very passionate explaining the dishes to us and how they home grow all their different herbs and spices, he made us feel very welcome and it was really nice. We also had pudding, and as we couldn’t decide the staff offered us a taster board, loved it! Also, amazing gin! All round winner, will be returning in 3 weeks with friends :) thank you

On holiday in Southwell - a town we know well. Only two other customers in the bar. The two staff on duty seemed surprised at our request for a carvery meal. We didn't feel welcome. No mention of a restaurant. Only to say no carvery food left. We felt uncomfortable. Inside and out, premises didn't seem as though the advertised makeover was complete. The food was average and not very attractively presented. £4.95 for a couple of scoops of ice cream presented in a very half-hearted way in a dish was a poor end to our day. We left - never to return.

Excellent Sunday Lunch, offering both a Carvery or other menu items. I had the Carvery, which was with plentiful and well prepared vegetables. My wife had poached haddock and this certainly came up to expectations. So good returning next week, caters of vegetarians, Vegans and those who like meat. Good service and pleasant atmosphere, at a reasonable price and good food!

Jess & her team couldn’t have done more to make our reception any better! Everyone loved the food! The attention to detail, my ´boudoir’, lights, candles, sound system was perfect. The staff out did themselves. Highly recommend this lovely venue!

From start to finish, this was a great experience! I called the day before to book a table for 17 people, was sent a menu & pre-order form via email from Dominique within 20 mins of our conversation! On arrival the following evening, Clare showed me to our table in the wonderful restaurant part of the pub - already beautifully laid out & all ready for our big group. Drinks orders were fast, food was delicious & they catered for our every need! It was a busy Friday night in the pub but you wouldn't have known it - everything was prompt, staff were always welcoming & it ran like clockwork! Thank you to everyone involved & Jess - your team is a credit to you. They ensured that a special meal for a group of colleagues was absolutely gold standard! We'll definitely be back!!

Visited today to escape the rain, and decided to have an evening meal, great recommendation of the linguini From bar tenders Anton and Josh, super friendly guys too. The food was some of the best I’ve ever tried, so hats off to the chefs,Wayne and Aaron that cooked it.

We've had a lovely afternoon with Jess and the team at The Admiral Rodney's Easter Eggstravaganza! There was a free bouncy castle, ball pit, face painting and games for the kids, great live music and tasty BBQ. The atmosphere was friendly and everyone was having a great time in the sunshine. Thanks guys! We'll definitely be back.

The food is delicious with very fast service. The staff are friendly, helpful and professional. This pub/restaurant is well run and they have a lovely court yard. They also do a lovely Sunday roast. Definitely worth a visit. We will be returning!

Called for a drink Sat 13 April lunchtime before wedding. Staff were very helpful and friendly as we had a few questions regarding area. Our wedding hotel in the town told us room not ready for us to get ready which was a concern after having travelled. Admiral Rodney bar staff offered one of their rooms which one of our party took up, staff certainly went the extra mile, thank you helped relieve the stress.

Our visit today was okay, the food was average but not anything special maybe a little over priced but one staff member was so rude. on the few occasions I have been here always received dirty looks and today as soon as we had finished our meal the bill was given to us without us even asking for it felt like they wanted us to leave when we were paying to eat there! So rude!
