The Abbotsford in Edinburgh, City of

Lovely pub just behind Princes St and conveniently near to M & S!! We were visiting Scotland and wanted to try some proper Scottish Whisky but were a bit daunted when we saw the amount of different whiskies there were to choose from!! The barman however was fantastic and talked us through what price we wanted to pay and what kind of taste we liked. He then picked 2 whiskies for us within our price range. He even came back over to ask what we thought and give a bit more information about them. First class service meaning we will definitely return.

Restaurant combining a typical pub and a warm restaurant where the food is typical and delicious, I recommend the Haggis. This is a place to go when visiting Edinburgh

A warm and friendly traditional bar with a great selection of drinks

We are pleased that we found this place. We ate upstairs in the restaurant. The atmosphere was calm & friendly. We were greeted by a young man called Glen. Abbotsford, he is a credit to your pub & restaurant, a very pleasant & helpful young man. The food was hot & tasted amazing. We enjoyed the place so much, that we went back the night after. Had we not had another nearby Italian restaurant booked for our 3rd night, then we would have gone back to the Abbotsford. We wished we had!

It was a great experience, and if you happen to find yourself in Edinburgh City Centre, this is your sure stop to enjoy quality meal and drinks.

I love this place , it's welcoming and the food is great , we had the haggis. It's the third visit I've had and I'm never disappointed.

Food was good had bangers and mash but it was such a small amount and it was literally just the bangers and mash no veg or anything else. Could have been more onion gravy

Stopped for lunch, wouldn’t come back had Fish and Chips wasn’t nice fish was very oily and greasy and the batter was very pale, very overpriced won’t be back

We thoroughly enjoyed our stop at this restaurant. When we came in downstairs, the bar was quite busy, and we almost left until someone told us about the restaurant upstairs. While it is not a very large place, it is very quaint with a great atmosphere and lovely staff. If you are wheelchair bound or have restricted mobility, whereas you can not climb stairs, then you will want to stay down in the bar. As I do not believe, there is a lift to help you to get to the 2nd floor.

We lucked into finding this gem of a pub on our first night in Edinburgh. It had been over 30 years since I last had fresh and delicious haggis, neeps, and tatties in Scotland and I had a craving - boy did this place deliver. The whisky sauce was another level. We dined upstairs as we had our son with us and it was quiet and cosy. Highly recommend.

An historic Edinburgh bar, with a brilliant range of beers and knowledgeable staff, located centrally. It's just great and if you're a tourist it's a must.

Haven't eaten here, but a really atmospheric town pub

My wife and I were visiting from Texas and I decided to order the Cajun chicken burger and it was soo good. My wife ordered the haggis, neeps and tatties and she really liked everything. The service was great the atmosphere was super chill for a relaxing dinner.

Haggis estaba delicioso a la hora del almuerzo y pastel de ternera casero era igual de sabroso en la cena. La comida estaba caliente y sabrosa. Personal agradable y atento. Esperamos volver a Edimburgo pronto y sin duda volveremos a comer allí de nuevo.

The Abbotsford was our 5th stop in a tour of over 17 pubs around Edinburgh. Here we had Zentner IPA and Black GOld as well as a meal of Scottish Angus Beef Burger and Landed Haddock and Chips. Of note is the massive and beautiful wooden bar.

My partner and I went in to have a Wisky, we saw online that they have a great variety and at a good price, and as soon as we entered one of the waiters at the bar began to treat us in a derogatory way (there were 3, the other 2 were very good and polite), he did not want to tell us where we could sit, he looked at us very unpleasantly, on top of that we were sitting at the bar and therefore we were not comfortable at all. But to make matters worse, he starts to put dirty glasses from the bar in front of us (in the image, the ones you see on the right on one side are set aside by me personally), of course we finished what we ordered and left. I consider that they were not at all appropriate ways to treat clients, in the end what you want is to have a pleasant time and to have a worker screw you up... we sense that it is because he saw us young (we are 25 years old), but still no To be a justification, we behave just as (or better) than more adult people and we pay the same as everyone else.

Amazing haggis - my burns night dinner in our nations capital did not disappoint at all. And the staff member who served me could not have been kinder. ( he had long hair in a ponytail - just lovely! )

A decent pub in the city centre. Old fashioned a d traditional with a great range of beer, gin and whisky.

Excellent meals and service in the restaurant upstairs. Fish n chips with peas and salad was awesome. As was the bangers n mash. Haggis entree very tasty. Have a pint or two of Leith juice to wash it down. Heaven. Waiter was super friendly and had a nice chat. All round great experience after walking around sightseeing.

Very welcoming pub with excellent food and a good whiskey choice. Had very good haggis and an excellent steak pie at a very reasonable price . Cannot comment on the upstairs as we sat in the bar

We did enjoy our bite to eat, nothing fancy and reflects the price. Did get put off my meal by hearing the waitress talking to her colleague about her vomiting on her night out recently and the bad language being used. Overall it is a nice quaint place close to the centre but there are other places to visit.

The best food I had in Edinburgh! I ate food like haggis, stew + pie, and it was so delicious!!!! I was worried because I heard people had likes and dislikes for Huggies, but it turned out to be a John Matang... The beer was really, really delicious too!!! The first floor is a pub that only serves beer. There is a restaurant on the 2nd floor, but I went there without making a reservation, but luckily they let me in right away!! Next time I come to Edinburgh, I want to come again🤤

Good food and decent service. Was very busy down stairs but easy up, had a decent meal.

Ordered 2 soups and 1 chicken tenders for 3 people. One soup came after the other 2 had finished their food, no apology. The chowder was basically a bowl of cream with potatoes, hardly any fish. The bread was hard/stale. The chicken tenders were tiny, only 3 small pieces which was v poor value. Disappointed 😞

A great taste experience to discover a good part of Scottish gastronomy, and at rather affordable prices. The restaurant, located upstairs, is very cozy, well decorated, putting you in the atmosphere of the country. It is also well located, close to other attractions. The dishes are delicious, well prepared and complete, served by a wonderful team. The local beers are good and plentiful, and make the craft work well. This restaurant is located above a warm and lively bar, but you are not too bothered by the noise if you want peace and quiet. Thank you for this experience and I look forward to coming back if I come back to visit this beautiful city Edinburgh!

The Abbotsford Bar & Restaurant is located in Edinburgh city center on a street parallel to Princes Street. It is spread over two floors, with the bar at the bottom and the restaurant area at the top. Unfortunately the service wasn't very attentive and there was no cask ale. But the atmosphere was very nice.

The food was perfectly cooked and presented pub grub. The upstairs restaurant is well laid out and the friendly young girl serving couldn’t have been more pleasant. Overall a lovely couple of hours spent with good food and a bottle of very decent Prosecco. Price for two mains and the Prosecco £62

Not the best in town either, but good. - prices are a little expensive, but not the end of the world. - great variety of craft beer too. - toilet available - a touristy place, not too much for locals. - booking in advance is recommended

The first pub I visited in Edinburgh left a lasting impression. As soon as I stepped through the door, I was welcomed by a lively, inclusive atmosphere, with people of all ages and backgrounds enjoying themselves. I’ll never forget the Stuart 80p beer I had—it was smooth, refreshing, and perfectly suited to the vibe of the place. The pub had a great energy, and it’s clear why it’s a favorite for locals. A fantastic introduction to Edinburgh’s pub scene, and definitely a spot I’d recommend to anyone visiting the city.

Excellent experience! The prices are really affordable for the quality. The atmosphere is very pleasant: a warm bar on the ground floor and a cozy restaurant upstairs. Tried haggis here for the first time and it was a perfect experience. I'm not a fan of liver, but it didn't taste how I thought it would and wasn't a strong flavour at all. 10/10 Got the cauliflower cheese soup of the day too which was nice and simple. 7/10 Jazzy music, classy decor and knowledgeable fun and friendly staff who wear waistcoats. There's not a lot more I could ask for, I only wish I were a local.

Marvellous old Edinburgh City Centre pub at ground floor and ist floor levels. Fantastic decor. During the day it's more of a restaurant these days rather than set up for having a few pints. The ceiling is a fantastic piece of traditional decoration. Didn't have food on this occasion but the place was very busy with diners. Excellent standards of service by the staff.

Beautiful historical pub with a wonderful old wooden bar with craftsmanship seldom seen nowadays. Friendly helpful staff and the food was great. I visited on a Wednesday afternoon when it was quite busy probably due to its location. Reminds me of how a traditional pub should look like, proper food, proper flames in the fireplace and great service.

Excellent experience. The restaurant is located on the upper floor of the venue and remains quiet, away from the hustle and bustle. The furnishings are particular and help create a nice atmosphere. The prices are affordable, the food was exquisite and the waiter's service excellent, I have never seen so much professionalism and friendliness. Super recommended

Nice venue for drinks all around 6 pounds a pint , Some of the pints and in fact halves were not poured very caringly. The staff seem to deliberately make the lagers extra frothy to put a big head on them . Is that a local thing or a way of getting less beer in your pint?

La comida era muy buena y el camarero era excelente. Cuando me puse de pie para irme, mi chaqueta nueva cayó al suelo. Cuando lo recogí había un gran trozo de cartón pegajoso pegado a él. Intenté, al igual que el camarero, despegarlo. Finalmente logramos eliminarlo, pero quedó un residuo pegajoso horrible en él. Trató de quitarlo, pero solo lo empeoró. Aparentemente, debería haber sido retirado antes del servicio. No hice un escándalo, pero envié correos electrónicos y metí la pata, pero no tuve respuesta. Mi chaqueta todavía tiene residuos a pesar de haber sido lavada un par de veces. Ninguna respuesta de la dirección, lo que es completamente inaceptable. Classy restaurant without the upperclass atmosphere or prices! Make a reservation before you go. When you walk in the door, you enter the bar and your senses are taken back to olden days when carpenters and artisans crafted unique pieces that held up through the test of time. The bar is stunning and well crafted! Go up the stairs at the back of the bar room to the restaurant. It's a bit smaller, yet cozy upstairs. There is a smaller version of the wooden bar there and it is equally beautiful! The thistle wallpaper is unique, but interesting. The staff is incredibly friendly and professional. They make you feel like your order is the best thing in the world. They also make recommendations if you get hung up on what to order. The food is spectacular! We ordered the steak and ale pie and the fish and chips. Both were on point and reasonably priced. They also kept our glasses full with beers and ales on tap. I highly recommend this restaurant!

Traditional pub with a great atmosphere and classic English dishes.

La comida estaba bien, y buena relación calidad-precio. Sin embargo, cuando llegamos estábamos sentados cerca de tres mesas (una de las cuales era larga) que no habían sido despejadas y no fueron despejadas hasta después de que nos habían servido. Estábamos junto a platos sucios, vasos, comida sobrante, etc. No es un ambiente muy agradable. Un par de camareros, que no parecían particularmente ocupados, pasaron varias veces por delante de estas mesas pero no hicieron nada para quitar los cubiertos usados, platos, etc. , hasta que otro miembro del personal vino a hacer el trabajo y ella lo hizo rápida y eficientemente.

Great atmosphere in a lovely pub. Lots of people but we managed to get us in at a free table in the end.

For a quick beer at the bar or a more leisurely dinner in the restaurant upstairs, this is the place for you. There are cask ales, lagers and whiskeys. And the team knows their stuff because they actually get trained and therefore stay longer.

A friend and I went for lunch. We sat upstairs, the food was nice and the staff were friendly.

We stopped in before the dinner rush, so we managed to get a table without reservations. It does get packed at dinner and it is not a very large place so I do recommend making reservations for the dinner rush hours. We were seated and I got a cider on tap which was lovely. I ordered the vegetarian haggis with the whiskey sauce which is an additional 2. It was good. The decor is very upscale. A lovely little place.

Good beer and nice atmospheric premises. But the food is below average. Fish and chips were ok but with boring overcooked peas, the burgers were dry with undercooked chicken and beef (we tried both) and boring without dressing. Great place for a beer, but you have to stay away from the food.

Tomé la sopa del día y mi esposo tomó haggis, Neeps y Tatties. Todo delicioso. Desearía haber tenido el apetito de haber tomado haggis pero quizás en la próxima visita. ¡Sólo fotos de bebidas y alrededores ya que nos burlamos de la comida demasiado rápido!

Excellent beer in this cosy bar on Edinburgh's famous Rose Street. Attractive wood panelled bar and a easy going atmosphere make a visit here a welcome one. Not been in the restaurant upstairs, but have heard good things about it. Would come here again.

One of my favourite bars in Edinburgh. Great place to take someone you are showing round Edinburgh. Also great that there is no background music. Hopefully they will start stocking irn-bru again. Also maybe provide a bit more information about the local and Scottish food and drink that is being served. I do miss the Saltire that used to hang above the front door.

The food here was delicious! Our server, Charlie, was the friendliest, cheeriest server I’ve ever had. The staff were so happy and it made our experience all the nicer. The booking was easy, and they accommodated my party of seven people. The haggis was good, and my Steak and Ale pie was delectable. The Monument burger was a hearty fill with well balanced elements, although the haggis wasn’t much of a key element. We had the Raspberry Crannachan and Sticky Toffee Pudding, both of which were divine. It gave the meal a good end note. Unfortunately, I was so excited and hungry that I forgot to take photos 😅 But Trust, it’s good.
