I have been popping into the Abbey for a pint and the odd meal for the last 25 years and have seen it go through many incarnations and owners. It has a great reputation for its large selection of beers and this visit was not a disappointment excellent. Now to the food review hmmm where shall I start? Food is about passion love fun and encouraging conversation what we were served was food with the cook's attitude all over it. My meal stared up at me and it looked grim the last time I had a meal this bad was at a Hong Kong street food market and what was dished up was still smiling at me. I think a conversation with the Kitchen staff would not be a miss. Standards have slipped for all the cheap offers and fancy menu it means nothing when served something that would have caused a riot in a prison. Marks out of 10, 0 must try harder.

We reserved the table we normally use 2 weeks in advance when attending the quiz. we checked by phone on the Monday and Wednesday that it was available and were told it was. When we arrived we were told we couldn't have our table and couldnt reserve a particular table but the table we normally have was reserved for someone else who had booked it a week after we had booked. Even though you can't book a particular table ?????. I have MND at am wheelchair bound. The rest of the staff are normally very accommodating due to the difficulty in accessing some tables. There wasn't another table reserved. Eventually this was resolved. We had our meal which wasn't great. There was then problems with another quiz team with the same problem as ours .We were then confronted by a member of staff very rudely and humiliatingly in front of our guests who had joined us. We were accused of writing a bad review, which (then) we had not. We were rudely told we are barred. If we had been taken to one side and discussed things that would have been fine. To shout at us in the middle of a busy pub is totally unacceptable. We have witnesses on ours and the next table that we hadnt said anything to warrant such a viscious outburst. Such a shame as we all enjoy taking part in the quiz. A local landlord has kindly invited us and other teams to join his quiz.

Arrived for dinner and despite a busy Service we’re made welcome. Drinks served with aplomb and food order taken. Despite the number of people ordering the food arrived without delay. It came on HOT PLATES and was well cooked and presented. The people looking after us were very busy but went out of their way to assist everyone. A credit to their craft. Some additional people behind the bar/delivering food would benefit the atmos. A brilliant selection of real ales compliments the food as well as available wines. The menu is extensive and good selection. We dined on Friday. See you again soon. Many thanks!!

Really disappointing Sunday lunch. Quick, friendly service and you get unlimited yorkies and gravy but…all 3 meats incredibly overdone and dry; veg was really awful-old carrots and parsnips and greasy roasties. Mash had obviously been under the hot plate for ages as a plasterer would have struggled with it! Everything tepid too. I did complain politely to the waiter (who was really friendly) but he just said he’d ’let the kitchen know’. Should have been offered some refund.

The service at the bar reasonable, I ordered a mega mixed grill, the steak meant to be medium rare very tough to cut through, and over cooked ,as for the piece of chicken, not sure when that was cooked, totally inedible, dry and tough neither were eaten, but I'll admit the gammon was excellent shame about the rest

Been many times before, visit regularly when in Shrewsbury and always had good food and the real ale is excellent. However, tonight the menu has changed and is now the same as any other chain "pub grub" burgers, steak etc etc. We had lasagne....miniscule portion (ok for me) but seriously small for a normal eater!! My dad had the Hunter's Chicken with chunky chips....burn offerings and skinny fries...not good. When we mentioned this we were told that we should had said to ask for chunky chips....it's in the menu description! Overall, I would say its gone from being a really nice pub/ restaurant to the same as any other....boring.

Called in there & ordered 2 curries, price now over £13 each, they arrived fairly quick but the portion of curry was really miserly, finished it in under 10 minutes. No one asked how the meal was, also ordered chunky chips, think these were around £3.50, about 12 chips, have used this establishment fairly regularly but wont be eating there again.

We have been going to the Abbey for over 2 years to thier quiz night and we have always had great fun, that is until management changed. The previous manager Sam always had a smile and made a real effort to engage with customers. Not so now, rude and disinterested staff and not enough of them, you can wait 20 mins to be served at the bar ,with a little organisation this could be remedied. People however continue to go because the quiz is very good ,however I've witnessed many grumbles over the last few months about rudeness attitude etc. This week we dared to complain about a 20 minute wait for drink, apology? No ,the manageress suggested we leave it we didn't like it,yelling at us like a fishwife!! How incredibly rude, you're not customers at the abbey merely an inconvenience. Abbey pub If you don't like the quiz then just stop it, then try and fill your pub to capacity on a mid week night. Such a shame ,but after all this time we won't be returning until things change. Abbey sort your management out.!!

We decided to take advantage of the MARCH50 offer and visit the Abbey. It was a bit chaotic as lots of people were also taking advantage of the deal. The food was fine nothing exceptional but hot and reasonably well served. However when we paid the bill the 50% reduction was "forgotten" but was corrected when they were reminded, this also happened to a friend also eating there. The next day I remembered I'd paid a £10 deposit when booking which hadn't been deducted from our bill either! I haven't been able to get back to the Abbey about this oversight so I emailed, heard nothing, emailed again and still have not received a reply. Feeling that I'm being ignored in the hope I'll go away. Feel a bit peeved so probably won't return.

Have eaten here a couple of times recently and have been impressed with the food and service. The staff we encountered today were helpful, friendly and attentive. My husband and I both had pies, we had been travelling all day and just needed some good honest pub food and it didn't disappoint. I had the steak and ale pie and I can honestly say it is one of the best pie meals I have ever had! The veg was broccoli, carrots, cabbage and cauliflower (you usually just have peas!) and the pie was so tasty (a proper pie encased with a crispy pastry) as was the gravy. Thank you for a wonderful meal after a long day on the road, we will definitely be back!

We booked a table at the Abbey 2 months ago - the first time we have eaten out on Christmas Day - a real treat - we thought. We couldn't have been more wrong! We were sat in the corner opposite a pile of boxes , junk , unused Christmas decorations and an old dog bed . A little off putting - but we hoped the food would make up for it . How wrong we were ! Half an hour after sitting down at our designated table - decorated with a piece of wrapping paper and a spring of artificial foliage ( classy!) a woman with a clip board came over to check our order and told us that we must pay the £100 for our food before we had eaten it ! An unusual request and concerned us . Our starter arrived after an hour - it was tasty but the soup was tepid. We sat waiting patiently for 1 hour 40 minutes when my partner asked the woman with the clip board how long our main meal would be . She went to check for us and came back stating that the nut roast was not ready and took longer to cook ( longer than turkey ? Not when I cook it at home!) I was shocked , very hungry and frustrated - after all they had had considerable time to prepare . I said to the woman that I understood why they had taken the money beforehand because we would have left if we hadn't already paid ! There were 2 men serving - one smartly dressed , one in casual clothing , filthy trainers and a cloth and cleaning bottle hanging out of his pocket . I told the woman that they were obviously short staffed as they had got a cleaner to help serve - she stated there was no cleaner serving . She disappeared again - I assumed to chase up our order - wrong !!!!! The next thing we knew was this oaf of a man with a beard - the 'manager' who slammed £30 on our table - ' your £30 deposit you need to leave as you have disrespected my staff , adding , your barred ! ' disrespected ? I was simply stating what I had observed ! I obviously protested -but this man was aggressive , threatening and I will not tolerate bullies , nor want to return to such a awful establishment ! He needs to listen to his customers not to exaggerated claims from his staff ! So no Christmas dinner , £100 out of pocket ! Intimidation ! Disgusting ! Thank you so much for ruining Christmas ! Seemed to see fair amount of staff on, plus management. Been to the Abbey few times, so to observe very clearly. Only two members of staff were working. Doing - bar, taking food orders, clearing tables, bringing food out. They were 2 male staff (one with glasses other goatee beard) both young At one point management and the other staff in a group talking behind the bar. Not impressed with the management, did commit to lad when came on to the bar to serve. Management clearly wasn’t happy with my commit. To be honest I really do not care. There was also a hygiene issue with body odour. Well done to the two young lads. As you both were working so hard. We want to give only you both a tip. But not to be split with other staff

We booked a table for 7 people to enjoy a “Festive Menu” as a pre-Christmas family get together. What a mistake! Our table was reserved ready for us. Drinks ordered and all looking good. We were presented with the standard menu, to be advised that the Festive Menu was not available. Given that we were just 1 week away from Christmas, this was somewhat disappointing. No worries, there’s plenty to order from the normal menu (we thought)! No steaks available! OK, let’s go Gammon… nope!! Burgers / Pies / Fish…. Very festive (not)! PHONE AHEAD TO CHECK WHAT IS ON / NOT ON!!! What we did eat tasted good, but a far cry from the “Festive Menu” that was advertised to be available. There appeared to be a staff shortage / inexperience, but the staff were friendly and were working hard.

Reading the reviews I think there is something strange happening. The place was super busy and we struggled to get a seat as we hadn't booked. The staff were lovely and very friendly. Food took about 30 minutes to come out but seeing as it was busy it was kind of expected. My partner had the steak and ale pie which had a crunchy pastry with mashed potatoes and gravy. I had the fish and chips which was crispy and hot. We had a great chilled night and the place was decorated for Christmas. The tree looked amazing. I did feel sorry for the staff at one point a group of people were making a fuss, however it was dealt with quickly. Will be back 😊

We use this pub quite often, have had the Chicken and avocado in the past, when it arrived it was such a large portion, but just looked as though the whole thing had been dumped on the plate. Said avocado but it took time to find this. Lettuce, could have been fresher I feel, the dressing is very nice, other family members had the scampi and this was enjoyed. Sticky Toffee pub and crumble a hit.

We also have been going to The Abbey as a treat every few weeks for there Sunday roast for several years, but won't be going again! Our experience was negative from start to finish. Cash only and no soft drinks on draft (as previously mentioned). Ordered drinks and food, waited ages for the food to come out- eventually did. Not all veg on plates as advertised (no roasted parsnips), discusting now for the price you pay. As we finished our drinks before our meal came went to get more from bar area. Waited ages, even though only about 6 other customers at bar, but staff appeared very inexperienced with prioritising paying customers. As was taking sooo long I chose to go and sit down again until the staff managed the bar area better. When returned a tall bar man was serving a couple but clocked I was waiting, and said he'd be with me next, after leaving to seat the couple and return to the bar he proceeded to serve a group of 11 away from the area I was standing at and I was left! I was not happy at this point so again went and sat down. My partner eventually went and got our drinks. I approached the bar man about not returning to me as he said he would, he apologised and said he was very busy (not good enough)! I have been to The abbey many times and honestly felt this was not a busy time! They used to have brilliant waiter/waitress service who would always remember us when we returned, but decent customer service is none existent now, what on earth has happened to this place, used to be an absolute pleasure eating here but no any more. Also my food receipt I was given had the wrong information on, stating we paid less money than was actually handed over the bar, very odd....

Have been attending on Sunday for a very long time. And today 10th September 2023 was just awful - My friend had the Roast Pork, served with 6 roast potatoes, a decent Yorkshire pudding, a table spoon of vegetable medley and a tea spoon of peas if that. No apple sauce or Crackling I had the triple which is almost £17 As above loads of roast potatoes and small amount of vegetables and peas, no crackling and the meat portion was disgusting for the price I’ve been paying for a long time. Literally like pre packet meat - small, and thin No one seemed interested to check back yet people running in back and forth from the kitchen with big bottles of coke and lemonade which were being charged at full price as per their till system which should be the post mix machine, no selection of soft drinks or juices on offer. Fridges completely empty. And to top it off couldn’t pay by card. Which resulting having to dash out to come back and pay for our somewhat of a Sunday Lunch. New Management Apparently making these changes ie portion control etc And shocking to my surprise at work that evening- I also work in hospitality a couple had said they’d been to The Abbey for lunch and was shocked at what they had on their plate too. Visited Sunday 20/08 for dinner and drinks, new staff member (Allie?) was lovely and very welcoming, she mentioned there was a lot of beer out of stock due to the football service, which is completely understandable. I ordered a pork roast dinner, and my boyfriend ordered a steak, the service was very fast and our food arrived in 10 minutes. I noticed my roast looked stale, like it had been left out for a good few hours, and my boyfriend’s side of peppercorn sauce never arrived… We were waiting to be service checked to report, as I was planning on asking for a replacement dish, but no one checked on us? Despite the table next to us having frequent visits. We both ate half of our meals and didn’t finish, opting to rather eat at home instead. We spoke to the (manager?) Allie, who was super apologetic and understanding, and even offered us a full refund. I have experienced food issues at this location on many occasions with different friends and family’s who have since stopped visiting, however I feel like giving The Abbey the benefit of the doubt due to the lovely atmosphere and recent refurbishments. Disappointing as we were planning on spending the evening here and purchasing more drinks. Thanks to Allie however for reassuring us this wouldn’t happen again if we decide to visit again.

Four of us dinner ate at The Abbey yesterday evening, and two of us opted for the Sunday lunch - the description on the menu made it sound delicious. It was early evening so we weren’t surprised that there was little choice of roast meat, but the meal that finally arrived after a long wait was awful. The meat itself was tasty and plentiful, but the vegetables, apart from the cabbage, were inedible - very rubbery carrots, parsnips and potatoes, and hard peas. No one arrived to check whether we were satisfied, not even when the plates were removed - it was obvious from these that we were unhappy with the food! As we were with friends we didn’t want to spoil our evening with unsolicited complaints, but we would have commented had we been asked. This was an expensive meal - we had experienced a very tasty Sunday roast at half the price on the previous Sunday! The staff were frankly curt! I know these are difficult times for the hospitality industry, but any chef should be ashamed to dish up such a dreadful meal.

The menu is very unimaginative, standard pub grub - burgers, lasagne, pies, etc. - and my friend and I struggled to find anything that appealed. Went to the bar to order to be told there was no chicken pie. My friend hesitated as she now had to find something else, to be told curtly by the server that "you've only got 9 minutes left to order". My sausage and mash was poor - tasteless rubbery sausages and solidified mash covered in thick generic gravy. My friend had beef pie which had an overdone crust and weirdly, one large solid lump of meat inside in the same generic gravy. The meat was very odd, some of it gristly and inedible and other bits more tender and OK. Both meals came very quickly and were incredibly hot, clearly just out of the microwave. The server came to ask if everything was OK so my friend explained about the meat, but was careful to say it was just feedback and she would eat what she could. The server said she would tell the chef ( although I imagine the 9 minutes were up and chef was long gone) and we heard no more. I've been awake most of the night with stomach ache, which may or may not be related to the meal, but the thought of the food we had makes me queasy. I sympathise with businesses and their rising costs but this is no excuse for such poor quality food. On the plus side, the beer garden looks very pleasant.

Visited with friends for lunch. Weather great, so sat outside - plenty of room as tables nicely spaced out. Good range of pub food available, reasonably priced, freshly cooked but without long wait. Staff were great - very friendly and very helpful! Really nice lunch!

All the staff have the Covic19 regulations well under control. We felt entirely safe here. Staff were friendly and very efficient. I loved my chicken pie (which was HUGE), the chips were cooked to perfection and the accompanying veggies were great. My husband's steak was cooked exactly to his liking and he enjoyed dunking his chips in my red wine gravy which came with my meal. And all this made so much better with the 50% discount due to the Eat Out scheme.Well done Abbey, keep up the excellent work

We had a birthday celebration and decided to go to the Abbey for Sunday lunch, 2 of us ordered roast beef, on arrival to the table there was a hair embedded in the beef and gravy, the beef was tasteless and colourless, it was like it had been soaking in warm water all day, veg was mushy. The others meals you couldn't go wrong with as they were deep fried straight from the bag. We didn't complain as we simply didn't want the meal changed.

Came here for a family meal of which was rubbish. The service at the bar was atrocious, rudely spoken and no smile. We asked for 3 well done stakes however all were pink and one was bleeding of which we sent back for the long wait for it to be cooked again !! Shocked at our experience and will not be coming back here again, we definatly do not recoment it here !

One star is being generous. Went here for Sunday lunch last weekend, where do you start? Stone cold plates, carrots harder than a horseshoe, more meat on a butchers apron and the pièce de résistance the "unlimited" roast potatoes which looked like they'd been belched out of a volcano (see pictures). This place has ideas far above its station with its fancy menus and inflated prices, but it's safe to say I've had far better meals at a Wetherspoons. Avoid at all costs.

So visited for a family lunch today at 1PM. Ordered a mixture of meals, I decided on a roast pork Sunday lunch. Well to say I was sho ked when it finally arrived at our table is an understatement, the roast potatoes looked as though they had been in the oven from last sunday lunch! They were so burnt I couldn't eat them. Knowing that you could have more roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding I thought I'd give them another chance. Well when the additional roast potatoes came out, would you believe it they were just as bad! There was 4 if us having a lunch but when the waitress came with the Yorkshire puddings she said she could only get three! Joke!!! For the price it's nowhere near worth it, you amount you get on the plate was ridiculous! We had cold cabbage and rockhard carrots! I was starving when I left. Dont bother going, your better off with an Iceland frozen ready meal.

We had a Sunday roast dinner here and were not disappointed it was lovely and so tasty. The bar staff are friendly and welcoming. The restaurant area is large so plenty of space to sit but it is advised to book as does get busy. There are colouring activities for the children to keep them occupied while I wait for a meal. Your roast dinner menu offers additional extras such of more Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, pigs in blankets and gravy which is brilliant. The food was delicious and really filling and a good portion size. Would recommend and if we’re going back for more roasts.

We were attending a pre arranged wake at the Abbey Pub following a 10:45am funeral at the Crem. We started to arrive at the Abbey from about 11:40am. The first people to arrive knocked the door in hope of being allowed in. A member of staff opened the door and said "We don't open til 12:00" and closed the door. They left between 60 & 80 people stood outside in the mist and misle. They could have let people in even if they did'nt want to serve drinks. This seems a strange version of hospitality.

Last visit to my local, The Abbey pub, to enjoy a farewell meal of steak & a glass of red after 23 years as moving out of the area. Over the years I've seen many changes to the pub's decor, staff, food & drink and glad to say it's gone from strength to strength. I was served by Jan, Caz and Nick who were very friendly, hard working and professional. The atmosphere as usual was pleasant, warm and inviting. I shall come back to visit in the future. Keep up the good work guys.

We were recommended this cafe and we weren’t disappointed. My husband and I had the ‘Chocks Away’ full English and as the delivery guy hadn’t been yet we had home made hash browns which were fabulous, and the eggs were double yolkers. Our friends had scrambled eggs on toast and had mounds! Highly recommend this place and the view was great.
