Do NOT go here for roast dinner. That (Terrible) Tea Room was an absolute joke. Forget a 15 minute wait for tap water, or even the 40 minute wait for the "food" - Do not advertise Sunday Roast if it isn't. Slimy, cold beef served with a dry yorkshire pudding, 2 roast potatoes and a "selection" of steamed veg and greasy mashed potato. We walked out before even attempting to consume what we'd been given. SO poor. No problem with the servers, it's not their fault - but goodness they seemed way out of their depth. Stick to cakes and sandwiches chaps.

What an amazing tearoom this is. Nothing is too much trouble for the very friendly staff. The food was amazing, we will certainly visit again. My husband is disabled & in a wheelchair but no problem here, they seated us at a table that the wheelchair could be situated & they helped me to get the wheelchair up a small step. Hats off to them, the places that do that are very few & far between, usually we're classed as second class citizens & a nuisance.

5 ⭐️ Quality We visited at the weekend and had the most amazing lunch. This place really is a gem in Howden and am thankful it’s right on our doorstep. If you’re nearby please drop in and support a really great fantastic local business. We have eaten here about six time this year so far and the food, atmosphere and staff are fantastic. I even commented how fantastic it was to see ladies sanitary products in the toilets to use. With a teenage daughter aged fifteen this really does mean a lot 🩷

Booked over phone. Nice welcome as we entered. Service was very nice and the flat bread meals are fantastic. Great value. Wide menu. So tasty. Loose leaf tea. Been here many times but sometimes it’s months apart. Haven’t reviewed for a while so thought it would be helpful to do one again. Consistently good home cooked food. Never disappointed. Thank you.

Two of us popped in without reservation for a quick bite before my train n from Howden to London. Greeting was a bit of a kerfuffle with nobody sure which tables were free. We headed upstairs to an area opened specially and ordered a sandwich, leek and potato soup, fruit scone with jam and butter and cheesecake with two teas. Service took a long time and tea came but was way too weak though it was leaf tea which I appreciated. The sand which was nice but the soup was dreadful. It was basically cream with a few flecks of leek, very little potato and no seasoning and the croutons weren’t - they were a few bits of toasted bread so just went soggy. As time was ticking away we asked for our cakes. The table next door asked for hot water twice. The cakes came minus the jam which required another wait (except I started eating the scone as train time was fast approaching). Sandwich and uneaten soup were cleared with no enquiry as to what was wrong. We headed down to pay to be greeted with, “I’ll be with you in a minute”. We didn’t have a minute but waited whilst the staff finished whatever they were doing before they processed the bill. Customer service is lacking here as is organisation. The soup was awful. We wouldn’t return given stiff competition in Howden.

Came here for lunch but I found service was very slow. Ordered food and just waited far too long and left only having tea to drink that we waited ages for. Might go back to see if it improves but would rather go somewhere else first. Sorry for the bad review, but said it how it was and others that day had waited sometime for their food orders as the waiting staff apologised for the lengthy wait.

Called in just before Sunday lunch started, thinking we would just have something little (until the specials board came out that is!). My partner had the steak and ale pie and I had a roast beef Sunday lunch, we were not expecting the quality or quantity of food that arrived.. you would’ve thought we were in a high end restaurant. Beautiful presentation, incredible taste, excellent service and friendly faces. You can tell that the staff genuinely care about and enjoy where they work. It was lovely to see regulars walking in and being greeted on a first name basis, that’s certainly not something you see very often now. We got cakes to take home and I can hand on heart say, we had the best Victoria sponge and lemon cheesecake we’ve ever tasted (and we’ve tried a fair few!) Thank you everyone at That Tea Room, we will be back soon!

The strong tea I requested was like dishwater! Also too weak for the rest of our group. I ordered strong tea, double checked my request was noted, then checked again when it came.. if I hadn’t taken the lid off the pot and seen a few leaves floating around I’d have assumed they’d forgotten the tea! Come on folks..it costs only a few pence for a spoonful of tea leaves (and I don’t mind paying for extra tea leaves if that’s an issue ). Shame, as the breakfast was good (except for the wafer thin black pudding) and the staff friendly. Please please learn how to make a pot of tea!

Use this Tea room as a stop over on a 2 and a half hour journey to Scarborough. This is a hidden gem. The quality of the food was outstanding. The staff were brilliant. I would recommend booking in as you don’t want to be disappointed. Loved all the tea pots hanging from the ceiling. People in my party had the soup of the day and I had the ploughman’s sandwich. Just amazing. This is a Five star tea room any day. If I could I would give it a six. Great value for money. Great parking nearby, just a short walk. The town is also lovely to have a walk around.

Called in with my daughter and baby grandson on the off chance that we could get a table. We was in luck! We were sat in the back room with a ceiling full of teapots. I ordered a ploughman’s sandwich. It came with an homemade sausage roll, homemade scotch egg both tasted lovely, picked onions, mini beetroot, salad and crisps. Everything was so fresh and tasted beautiful. There was so much that I had to bring half the sandwich home. We bought pudding to take home too. Mine was the best scone that I’ve tasted. You could taste the butter in it. Absolutely full marks to the tea room, the food and all the hard working staff.

My family and I have previously enjoyed several visits to this cafe. However, when we arrived last weekend the barista behind the desk completely ignored us until we had to presume that meant there were no tables. My mother enquired as such and was just told “no” (still no hello). There was clearly an empty table next to the door where we stood with no reserved sign on so I asked her about that one. The response was “sorry we don’t usually let big people sit there”. Now, I thought about this for a minute an last time I checked my BMI was fine and my four year old, although tall, is able to sit on a normal chair not requiring a high chair and would not have blocked the door as she appeared to be suggesting. Maybe our winter coats were not particularly flattering? Whilst I was drawing this conclusion in my head the server had several moments in which to correct herself as I can only hope that she meant “large parties” rather than “big people”. Unfortunately she did not feel this necessary and perhaps - as there were in fact enough chairs at this plenty big enough table and I have witnessed other customers using it before - I have assume she meant what she said. Can I suggest for the benefit of future customers that you run some in-house training on how to greet customers (yes team, say hello and smile even on busy Saturdays!) and if you don’t actually want people to use the table by the door for fear or obstructing said door, perhaps consider removing it?

What a fabulous find this little place is! The quality of food is great and the choice is very wide - breakfast, brunches, hot and cold lunches, afternoon tea to even Sunday roasts! The best thing for me is the choice of cakes which are all home made - the last time I was in I dithered at the counter like a child in a sweet shop because I found it so hard to make a choice! I have coeliac disease and eat gluten free but they are always helpful. The rice pudding is excellent. It would be good if they had some tastier gluten free bread such as Mark's and Spencer brown bloomer instead of the white rather dry one they serve but they are not alone in serving such bread sadly. The range of cakes for normal diets are amazing but sadly they provide no gluten free equivalent which I'm sure they could. Despite this it's a lovely tea room. Just think how excellent you'd be though with these gluten free alternatives.

There were empty tables downstairs but we were greeted by staff with the words "there's a massive wait for food as we've got a large party of people upstairs' we said we were happy to wait, but another member of staff said we really should have booked if we wanted to eat. As we'd only just walked in and were looking at the cakes and scones and hadn't made up our minds what we wanted, it would have been nice to have been offered the choice of tea or coffee and cake etc. Instead we were made to feel we were at fault for not booking, and our custom was definitely not welcome! We called here yesterday. We've visited Howden many times but this is the first time that we've come across That Tea Room. The name is a little misleading as it does so much more. Sunday lunches were in full swing when we arrived and by the comments that diners were making were very good. In my partner's words the salad nicoise is "better than the french make!"

We decided to make our first stop as Howden. I contacted the cafe first and they couldn't be more helpful. Upto turning up late, we were looked after like royalty. The food selection was amazing with great service. Some of us were even tempted with cake! We will be back!

We have just visited for lunch (2 adults and 1 five year old). Had a lovely lunch from the specials board and there is a great children's menu (also a children's afternoon tea). The food is yummy and is very good value. Staff are very friendly and accommodating. Well worth a visit. We will be back again.

My husband & I had a lovely lunch at this delightful little tea room. The staff were very welcoming & friendly. My husband had the Sunday lunch which he said was delicious (really good roast potatoes) & I had the afternoon tea. The sandwiches were tasty & the sweets were gorgeous. Definitely worth a visit.

After trying to get into Kitchen but not hour wait, we thought we would give That Tea Room a try. What a disappointment, firstly there were no other tables occupied bar one, yet we got put in a room alone, not the best start. I ordered the ham sandwich with cheese and piccalilli on brown with a side of chunky chips. The sandwich was presented nicely, however the bread was high street sliced bread, not what you would expect these days, where artisan breads are the usual offering, the filling was ham, no cheese or piccalilli, a real let down, especially when compared to Kitchen which is at a totally different level, no doubt the reason for the different in number of diners. The hot chocolate, which again was nicely presented, was anaemia, to be polite, and the latte equally disappointing. Not cheap either. On this showing I could not recommend a visit.

Went for afternoon tea the other day. Was ok but couple of downs. Some of the Lettuce was old, strawberry tasted of onion presume they used the same knife? Chocolate brownie was like it was scraps scrapped up - The cost was high compared to other places but looked at reviews and people seemed happy. I asked for more hot water for tea was offered another pot of tea. Didn’t realise I would have to pay. Cost for 2 afternoon teas £24 plus 2 pots of extra tea £4.40. £28.40 made it very costly. - wouldn’t do it again - sorry but need to inform the cafe so hopefully same mistakes are not made for other people’s.

Myself & my friend visited today for the 1st time & it certainly won’t be the last. What a beautiful quant place with friendly staff & relaxing atmosphere. I had the pulled pork & chunky chips,my friend chose the gammon, egg & chunky chips. Both meals were well presented, piping hot & were yummy. I also had the hot chocolate with the full works which is to die for.We didn’t have room for pud but both chose raspberry cheesecake to take out which was fantastic.I’d highly recommend a visit to this gem of a place,it won’t disappoint.

We stopped in on a Tuesday late afternoon. There was only one table occupied so it was nice and quiet. We both had double scoop cones. There were loads of ice cream flavours to choose from. Yummy.

We booked into the lodges next to the Gardeners Inn and decided to walk around for dinner & drinks. The venue is decorated for Halloween which I did enjoy and we had a lovely welcome from the waitress. A few item were sold out but the menu was plentiful and the food did not disappoint. I had the sizzling hunters chicken and my partner had Korean Chicken. Portion size was fantastic the side salad & slaw was fresh, definitely the best hunters chicken I’ve had. Banoffee Pie & cream for dessert again it was better than any other I’ve tried. Lovely atmosphere, service time felt right for the number of tables eating and the price was reasonable. Would recommend 100%

First visit to this lovely little restaurant to celebrate 🍾 both Mother’s Day and my wife's 60th birthday and we were not disappointed! The setting in the window table with background music and plenty of space was perfect. We ate off the a la carte menu and we both had three courses complimented by a bottle of fizz. Each course was food heaven and the service was exceptional so we will be returning for the Sunday lunch to celebrate my birthday in April. Thank you
