Found this place after parking our car in the shopping hall to collect something locally. Looks like a very traditional, well established place, with extensive menu. We ordered the roast of the day and a steak & kidney pudding. The cafe was very busy but it was still too long a wait for our food. The s&k pudding came out eventually, but my roast was about 10 mins behind it. Food was home-cooked, tasty and a good portion. But they do need to speed up service and bring all meals out together. They seem to have lots of staff, so not sure where the problem lies, perhaps the menu is too big. Liked the place overall and would go again, but not if I was on a schedule!

Used to eat here once a week prior to pandemic. Have only been a couple of times since. Went today and we were looking forward to our snack. Firstly, all prices have increased ridiculously. Over £12 for 3 slices cheese on toast, 2 teas & 1 apple pie. Waited 30 mins for the cheese on toast & when it was plonked on the table the waitress looked furious when we said we'd asked for crusty, not sliced, bread. No apology. She could be seen having a go at the chap who took the order. He came & told us it wasn't our fault, it was his! After another wait we were brought the replacement- smallest slices of bread possible. We will not be returning- shame. Always like to support independent businesses but we'd get better value & service from one of the fixed meal chain restaurants. Can accept mistakes but not rip-off prices & miserable staff where you're made to feel uncomfortable.

Visited with my daughter & 2 grandchildren. Ordered 1 fried egg Roll, 1 fried egg sandwich,a bacon sandwich with chips, sausage & onion sandwich with chips and some drinks. Egg roll& egg sandwich came up promptly. Waited and waited, by this time the children had finished & we still never had our sandwiches. Went and asked where the rest of our order was, was told it was coming. Received bacon sandwich & chips but still no sausage sandwich. Enquired again, was told any minute now it was being sorted. 5 mins later sausage sandwich arrived but was told waiting on chips..chips came along another 5 minutes later. Our order was not large and far from being complicated. Other customers behind us when ordering had their orders full completed while we were still waiting. I find this totally unexepctable... If the staff was more interested in serving the customers rather than gabbing and chatting aor even really busy I could understand the wait, but not the inconsistency of filling our order. I will not be visiting this café in future, which rally is a shame, everyone USED to be so on the ball.

Don’t order a childrens meal unless ur feeding a newborn.. prices are extortionate for the tiny portions you get! 4 potato smileys and ONE turkey dinosaur? Since when did a simple ham and cheese toastie cost like £7? A cafe I once loved that I will not be visiting again! There’s inflation and then there’s out right ridiculous.

The standard of cappuccino has really gone down. I think the staff need a bit of training on how to make one. You end up with an awful milky coffee. Perhaps they should have some "Barista" training otherwise they should not advertise it as a "cappuccino". I will go elsewhere for mine in future.

There are still places for proper English food but you have to go to the right places because they are getting scarce. The Teapot run by the third generation is an amazing place to go and the options they have on the menu are impressive like old school bovril tea, four choices for puddings served with custard and the breakfast menu named after the Royals. I had Prince Phillip which was a posh egg, bacon and bubble for 2.95. The poached egg was amazing as it was smooth and tender. The bubble was memorable because it had broccoli and peas as most places use cabbage so it was really tasty. Overall I am so glad I visited.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

Visited this cafe one weekday lunchtime as four adults and one toddler. It's one of the places where you order your food, get a number, and then wait for this to be bellowed out before shouting "bingo!" and having it brought over to you.Tables and chairs are set very close together, meaning it's not ideal for parents with buggies or pushchairs, and there's not really much in the way of space to set yourself up if you have children with you. The "Sholley" is very much in evidence here too, blocking gangways and making life difficult in general.Food-wise, there's very little to say; standard tea / coffee and fish fingers, beans and chips-fare. Adequate, but nothing special. This restaurant is situated in what used to be called the "Old Rumford Shopping Halls", and from my experience and what I've heard from others, tends to be favoured by the elderly in the main, and people who do not like "coffee bars" or theme restaurants. Those wanting a simple "plain" cup of tea or coffee and chips with everything as standard would be at home here in this typical Essex "greasy spoon" cafe, but it's not a place I would go back to in a hurry myself. The one coffee I had there was bitter and unpleasant. My parents (in their eighties) "love" the place because it serves "good plain British food" and "plain coffee", to which I think that means instant coffee with cold milk, rather than something with steamed milk.

I didn't get asked if I wanted the tea or coffee that came with the breakfast. All in all not impressed as apparently the waitress was in training. And won't be back again I can see why the breakfast scene is getting smaller each day if the service is poor .
