Sunny Saturday afternoon - dog walk on Carsaig beach. Went to the coffee shop for a coffee - once in we fancied a bacon roll - can't go wrong - right?. To be fair there were a number of customers ordering toasties etc. They did say "we are very busy and it might take a while" What does that mean?" "ten minutes probably" Well sitting in the sunshine and looking out over the boats coming and going is no hardship. After half an hour we got a bit impatient and were assured that they are just almost there! So, after 40 minutes we were delivered two dry rolls with crispy bacon which falls apart under pressure. Dry as a bone inside and greasy outside? That's quite a trick! My labrador enjoyed it anyway. Why are we so hopeless at hospitality in Scotland?

We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch at the cafe, the food was excellent. The burger was very tasty and the cheese toasty perfectly cooked. Service was swift, there are signs up saying it isn’t fast food, which says more about the impatience of our modern world than the service in the cafe. Great value and a beautiful location.

Not as good as it was ! Staff v friendly but attention to detail and quality of ingredients not good enough. It’s pricey and I don’t mind that as the location warrants it (no better view) but food needs to match it. It’s been excellent in the past so really hoping it can be again.

The cafe is in a beautiful spot but that's really all it has going for it. The staff seem unable to cope when it's busy and it was a long time before we were served a watery hot chocolate. They're lucky they are the only place in town.

We loved the old-fashioned general store and the wonderful view from the cafe terrace. We had tasty soup and bread for lunch; not cheap but higher prices are to be expected in out-of-the-way places like this. The staff were friendly and efficient.

Fantastic little general store - great produce displayed with care and attention and very friendly owners. The coffee shop attached has the best view ever but we were slightly disappointed that the food and service was not up to previous exceptional standards. Nice little cafe with great views of Tayvallich harbour. However, you are paying for the view really. Over £20 for 2 cheese and bacon toasties and 2 cans of coke is too expensive even with the view. So only gets an average score therefore

I suspect the only reason they’re still there is the monopoly they have! I was there on holiday in the village and popped up for a coffee and bacon butty! Yes the setting is nice but it’s phenomenally expensive for a badly made coffee (heat milk for longer guys) and a dry and average bacon butty. The staff really don’t come across as enjoying themselves at all!

Staff are unsmiling and ignore you, service is incredibly slow, I appreciate it’s not fast food but 50 mins to get 2 toasting seems a tad extreme. Coffees served way before food so weee cold by the time the food eventually arrived. Poor. Sour faced staff don’t make for a pleasant lunch.

Where to begin? On the 19th July, we were told that the coffee machine had broken down, Fast forward almost a month & the problem has still not been rectified...not a good look for any cafe!!. Our only option was filtered coffee at £2-80p per cup. Not so long ago, an americano here was £2-10 . Our so-called lunch was a disgrace. The choice was minimal. My partner had a cheese & tomato toastie, made with 2 pieces of the cheapest white bread found anywhere, which had barely touched the toaster, a tasteless cheddar and 2 tiny bits of tomato (50p extra) . My tiny chicken tikka panini was barely toasted, had lashings of sauce, covering almost NO chicken whatsoever, accompanied by a joke of a salad that had no dressing, a couple of pieces of limp greenery and one solitary vine tomato These 2 snacks cost £15-40. The toilet was a disgrace, with water all over the floor which was also covered with a white liquid, which could have been ice cream, or who knows what! Finally, a word about the staff. Mostly young, clearly inexperienced, no real training, disinterested, sullen, unfriendly, almost haunted.. I suppose having to wear muzzles for hours on end, means they have lost their zest for life.

We stayed in Tayvallich for a week and visited numerous times for essentials as this is the only shop for miles. The staff in the shop were unfriendly and rude and couldn’t acknowledge us despite greeting everyone else. We then decided we would go to the cafe to try it out and we waited for 10 minutes whilst staff walked passed and completely ignored us, we then heard the way they were talking to other customers with no manners or enthusiasm so decided to take our custom to the Tayvallich Inn, where the food is suberb! Considering there is only 2 places in this village this is a shame and a total let down! Hopefully they can take this criticism onboard and improve their customer service as we were really disappointed.

We've often been here for a 'coffee and cake', but it has been a while since our last visit; all previous visits had been thoroughly enjoyable, but this was frankly a tad disappointing. A tea, coffee and scone was ordered (not a vast spread....) the tea was (apparently) not very nice, my coffee was cold and the scone was... at best described as 'interesting' - I've certainly not had the like before, and I won't have another, a peculiar concoction of seeds, not what I had in mind at all.

There was no garnish on the paninis and the filling was insubstantial. Our small grandson had a cheese sandwich, nicely cut into quarters but it was "garnished" with four whole tomatoes!

Went here once for breakfast on Wednesday Morning I had the vegetarian 'Full Monty' option my mate had the normal 'Full Monty'.Now, Full Monty where I live means a plate full of breakfast type food, not a portion that barely fills the holes of my teeth. Please if you're going to call it a Full Monty then provide it, not a tiny amount even on a small plate.

We called in for a snack! They served us a nice smoked haddock soup/chowder which was very good. The service was fine and waitress was friendly but I thought the cost of the soup was a little excessive - £6.75 (?)The views over the Bay were wonderful - presumably this added to the cost of the soup!!!

I call it Debbie's place - you'll know it when you see it! - said several of the locals on Islay. A large group of us visiting the island had spent the morning dotted across it doing various different activities. I'd asked in the brilliant Islay Natural History Trust where locally we could grab lunch and was directed to the Bruichladdich Mini Market. The place itself is run by Debbie, her mum and her sister. It's the ort of place that is the lifeblood of islands the world over - half grocery shop, half cafe - all welcoming. Debbie's sister was in charge when a group of 15 of us rocked up unannounced. This would normally not have been a problem - plenty of outside seating - but that particular day the ferry had been cancelled, along with much of the stock for the shop and cafe. Undeterred the staff there made us feel welcome and pulled together a lunch which went down very well with all - children and adults alike. Think sandwiches and toasties with great coffee and a good choice of cold drinks. They also serve some amazing cakes - I'm told the rocky road was fab, I know the chocolate cake was! Although initially under pressure when we all turned up, the staff seated us happily and we had all eaten within about 15 minutes of arriving.

Visited to celebrate a friend’s birthday. The setting on the shore of Loch Fyne overlooking the ruin of Castle Lachlan is stunning and we were able to enjoy a bottle of fizz outside our shepherds huts where we would be spending the night. After a late afternoon stroll to the castle ruins we were ready for our dinner. The tasting menu served in the evening is locally sourced and is probably the best I have ever tasted. We chose the wine pairing which was excellent and presented beautifully. After a great nights sleep breakfast is delivered to your accommodation and this is another delight. Cannot fault this place
