Tay Tar Thai @Harpenden in St Albans

We had a lovely meal at this restaurant but they really need to do something about their metal chairs. They need thicker cushions on the seats. It spoilt the evening by being very uncomfortable.

Sadly the food we ordered was very poor . We have eaten at the restaurant and had takeaways from their original restaurant and now the new one. This evening all the food was very poor, tasteless and bad quality . I feel bad making this review about an independent restaurant however it was so bad that I needed to write this review to express my dismay

The most attentive lovely service! Food is sublime and authentic. Looking forward to our next visit. Red duck curry is the best I've ever had. (Been to Thailand a number of times).

I come here almost every week. The best Thai restaurant in the area. Great food, ambience and amazing staff.

Sat for 40 minutes before being served then waited another 10 minutes for our drinks. It was a very busy 8pm Saturday night sitting but they clearly didn't have enough staff to cope with the influx of diners. When the food arrived it was very good but the slow service has left a bitter taste. Very quick to bring the bill though!

Great local as we are walking distance. Family friendly business and they have turned the restaurant to thriving compared to previous Italian. Portions are getting smaller and the deep fried chilli squid used to be chunky and curled, now it’s just small strips. Don’t get the same bite, but still quite tasty. Not sure why it changed. Staff are mostly friendly but some occasions when busy there is quite a waiting time for drinks and food. Very good location as just near station and car parking is also convenient round the corner there’s a car park. Highly recommend but better service and good week days like most places.

Best Thai in Harpenden (yes there is more than 1)

The food, atmosphere and staff were amazing. The premises were very clean and tidy. The starter sharer was adapted for three of us with ease. Sticky rice excellent!

The food and service were OK, but not great. We were sat at the back of the restaurant where it was so noisy we had to shout at each other across the table to be heard. We won't bother going back: plenty of other great local restaurants

Everything was delicious. The staff was very kind and attentive. I will definitely come back.

Never been to a restaurant where they made it so obvious they wanted us out so quickly. Admittedly we were late by 10 mins but we must have spent no more than one hour in the restaurant. The food arrived so quickly and the minute we finished the main course we were presented with the bill without being shown the dessert menu and then immediately by the CP machine. The manager then admitted they wanted the table for a large party and offered to put us somewhere else which we declined and left in complete disgust.

Really outstanding food but it was absolutely stone cold when delivered by gogetters. I phoned to complain they said I should talk to gogetters. I contacted gogetters and they said I should speak to the restaurant. Since the restaurant is only six minutes away by car I cannot help but assume that the food was not hot when it was packed. Because the restaurant washed their hands of the issue, I have no recourse but to leave this negative review.

So much better now they have more room in their lovely new restaurant on Station Road. Food was always amazing, authentic tastes of Thailand. Service is so friendly and they couldn’t do enough to accommodate the novice tastes of our son. Always busy at the weekends.

Thought I would try a new restaurant on my way home so collected a quick take away from Tay Tar Thai harpenden. I must say I was disappointed by the meal to the point It was binned. Flavours in the pad keemai non existence, a sea of oil and chilli was left to linger in my mouth. I thought at least the going talai would give a refreshing kick however it was clear the prawns were not cleaned properly with the black wastes string remaining…binned. Lastly the paper corn, well there was no flavour to really comment on. I’m a lover of Thai food however tonight had no authenticity in the meal what so ever

We were really looking forward to dinner at their new restaurant in Harpenden and had nothing but glowing reviews of their first smaller restaurant. 5 people asked us if we had finished our starters as my husband was still eating his. We wanted to relax and take our time and asked for a break between starter and mains but that didn’t happen. We couldn’t relax. Were rushed all the way through. They clearly wanted the table back. The food was just ok. We complained about the £12 papaya salad. Will give it another go midweek next time with a change of menu selection and see how it goes. But we will never return at the weekend again. I resent handing over good money and feeling rushed out the door.

The food is tasty, hot, and cooked fresh. I have been many times and the level of good food and atmosphere has stayed at the same high standard. Happy birthday being sung there is an experience.

Have been a couple of times since they moved to the larger premises on Station Road and food is as good as before if not better! Tables less crammed in now and have had great service both visits. Soft shell crab and mixed starter platter a big hit. Great authentic Thai food and lovely buzzy atmosphere.

Awesome, authentic Thai food. The flavours are amazing, the menu is vast. The staff is very friendly. We had a team dinner for 10 people and everything we ordered was excellent. Will definitely revisit.

This was such good food for an amazing price so I could pay for me, my girlfriend and my wife as well as my dad so will be coming again

Amazing food and friendly staff. I recommend the salt & pepper squid, Tom Yum soup, and the spare ribs from the starter menu. And then yellow curry from the mains... I'm making myself hungry just writing this.

We were a family group of 10 dining on a very busy pre-Christmas evening. The food was delicious as always, divine ribs and soft shell crab highly recommended. Service was good although a little slow clearing the table after the starters.

Tiny portions, still hungry after! Id probably eat the free prawn crackers if they have you any! Bland food even though I asked for an extra spicy larb gai, I had barely 1 chilli in which is meant to be a spicy dish to start with!! Chicken fried rice super bland. Waste of £30

Bijou Thai restaurant with good service and excellent food. Highly recommended.

Food and Service are exceptional. The atmosphere is hreat with a shabby chic feel. Because it is so popular the adjacent tables and couples were perhaps too close for a comftable romantic dinner. But that is the only fault I could find and it really is one of the best Thai restaurants for miles around and that's why we keep going back.

Average takeaway Pad Thai and Massaman Chicken Curry , not very authentic and not good value with one fried rice delivered £31 . Disappointed.

This is a great restaurant for a family treat dining in. We went on a Sunday early evening which was perfect and vert laid back and we were able to relax and take our time. Prompt service. We'll presented food and delicious. I would definitely dine in there again and recommend it.

Not sure I should be sharing this with the outside world as I just couldn't fault the place. The food is amazing. The service was excellent and the atmosphere was just right. It was cozy and felt like a lot of attention had been spent in preparation and cooking of the food. It wasn't cheap but not expensive. I just love the place and will be going back for sure. Very busy at the weekends but it shows how popular the place is.

Been here twice in June as had to come back straight away after the first visit. Forgot how delicious this place is. The sharing platter is a great start, with every element being fantastic. Everything tastes so fresh, and even the fried elements aren’t greasy at all. Tried lots of different mains here; love the curries and the weeping tiger steak. Highly recommend everyone to try this restaurant! Can’t wait to come back.

Small restaurant, but great food

I’ve give few try to this place, but food taste average, small portions. They offer prawns crackers but charge for them. cozy Atmosphere but very tiny place, would recommend in week days. staff is friendly though. Looks good for dates.

Fabulous evening in this compact but central restaurant. Service was great, and the food superb... probably the best Thai food I've ever had in the UK. We went for the set menu which was reasonable at £26 a head, plenty enough for the 2 of us and the Tamarind duck was to die for. Thank you and we'll certainly be back

I visited with my sister and had a wonderful time. The food was really lovely and fresh and the service was incredible. The restaurant is small and can be quite noisy however this was not a concern for us and we loved the lively atmosphere. Will visit again!

Superb food but let down by the very tight configuration of tables and mediocre service. I hope the owners will find a better premises as this is the best Thai food around - it’s just so cramped it spoils the experience. Whilst fairly quiet upon our arrival we weren’t offered a drink for sometime. The restaurant was very hot so it was disappointing. When we were served it was very friendly and helpful - we were just left with no service on a few occasions. We will try it again for the food….even an extra pair of hands might be a big help.

We went here for a Mother’s Day meal for my mum, the food was as very nice indeed however after we had eaten my brother and I asked for another drink and the order was taken. A few minutes later a waitress came up to our table and asked us if we could leave as they had another guest and they needed the table!! I think very rude?… which I have to say pur waitress wasn’t but the manager was!! We refused to pay the full bill and we’re clearly told that the food was ok so they wouldn’t do anything either bill. Well from our perspective the the food is only half the experience, if the food is good but you have bad service then it ruins the experience, however the food can sometimes be mediocre but it’s still a great experience and enjoyable which has not been our experience!! In our view it seemed like they have “regulars” here and they will come first! Just our experience guys but although the food was very good we have eaten at Thai restaurants with equally as good food and good service to boot!!

Whilst the food was generally good - although a dish marked with three chillies was not even spicy - the service was beyond abysmal. The restaurant has far too many seats for the room available and tables are on top of each other and it is very difficult to move around. I dread to think what would happen in an emergency evacuation. I was place right next to a cold window. We pre-booked for 19.00. We arrived on time and were left standing near the entrance for five minutes, before our table was prepared and we were taken to it. It was then a further thirty five minutes before I got up and walked to the serving station asking for the order to be taken - we were not even offered drinks. They failed to bring water as requested. The Proseccos were warm and poor quality. The plates were cold as they were delivered and left on the table for fifteen minutes before the food arrived. We complained and the service charge was left on the bill [which I took off] and no apology was given. Our evening out was ruined. We will never return.

Tay Tar Thai is the best! My husband and I order takeaway from them all the time. Definitely our favourite place for Thai with excellent customer service! You can always expect to be greeted with a smile.

Best Thai restaurant in Harpenden..

Another first class meal for 4 last night at this small, independent restaurant. Particularly notable for the quality Weeping Tiger steaks. Sea Bass and Green Curry also superb. Wonderfully fresh, authentic food that is always well cooked and well presented by friendly staff. Top restaurant in Harpenden.

What a hidden gem and nice to support a non chain restaurant. Only small so would always advise to reserve a table. Food always super fresh and really professionally presented. Staff are all super friendly and welcoming. This place never disappoints!

A Thai welcome with great food. Their green Thai curry is probably one of the best in the area. It's quite good value too as we had a starter, wine and a dessert.

Our new go-to Thai restaurant. Lovely ladies run this place, food is super fresh and excellent. Takeaway is good too. Been here for work do's and a quiet meal for two with my wife. Even taken relatives from Wales here. Every time, excellent. Kap Khan Kap :)

Saw some good reviews and love thai but was quite disappointed. Interior was lovely and staff were nice, but found the food quite bland. Ordered two of the spiciest dishes and found no spice at all with them

We were a 'drop in' early Sunday evening. Very welcoming. Food very good although for us their definition of 'not very spicy' was indeed spicy for us 🌶. Will go back again and take teenage son, he loves spicy food!.
