Without a doubt the worst Chinese restaurant I've ever been to. Apart from the host, everything was awful about the place. Our waiter was curt, hurried and rude. The food timing was appalling. The food itself was tasteless at best and offensive at worst (the duck rice and beef were hideous). This place is quite frankly a rip-off joint. If people want nice instagram photos, I recommend Harvey Nics, and not some lousy Chinese gaff with paper blossom and naff cocktails overflowing with smoke, but not alcohol.

A Confusing Experience with Style Over Substance Our visit to Tattu Edinburgh was unfortunately marked by a series of missteps that overshadowed the meal itself. Upon arrival, we were subjected to a surprisingly personal and persistent line of questioning from the staff about why we had chosen to dine there that evening. The tone felt less like a warm welcome and more like an interrogation, which quickly became uncomfortable. It later became clear that the purpose of this questioning was to stage a surprise “celebration” moment during dinner — something involving sparklers and staff theatrics. This seemed designed to draw attention to tables under the guise of a special occasion, but it felt intrusive and performative rather than thoughtful. Watching other diners caught off-guard by this spectacle only added to the awkwardness. As for the food, we had selected a sharing menu that clearly stated each guest would receive dessert. Midway through the meal, we were informed that the listed dessert was no longer available, but were told we could each freely choose from other dessert options — and that only one would be charged due to the substitution. However, when the bill arrived, the most expensive dessert was listed as an extra charge in addition to all others already included. When we questioned this, we were initially told it was a language barrier and that we had misunderstood. After some back and forth, the staff eventually admitted the logic didn’t hold, and removed the extra charge. This interaction felt both confusing and poorly handled. The food itself was average — passable Chinese-inspired dishes, but far from memorable. Desserts were overly sweet and overpriced. I ordered an espresso to go with dessert, but it arrived well before the sweets and was cold by the time the food came. When I asked for a fresh one to accompany dessert, the replacement was sloppily made, with broken crema and odd texture. The overall concept of the restaurant leans heavily into dramatic visuals — faux cherry blossom trees, marble surfaces, and mood lighting — but there’s a sense that it’s all decoration over depth. The food is presented as high-end Asian cuisine, yet is made and served by local Scottish staff, and feels disconnected from any real culinary authenticity. All in all, this was a strange and disappointing evening. Tattu offers a highly stylized experience that seems more interested in Instagram moments than genuine hospitality or quality dining.

From the moment we stepped into Tattu, we were completely captivated. The interior is absolutely breathtaking—every detail thoughtfully designed to create an elegant and immersive atmosphere. The staff were warm and welcoming from the start, and the entire experience was exceptional. We had a reservation (which we highly recommend, as the restaurant fills up quickly), and were lucky to be looked after by our incredible waiter, Lewis. He was not only friendly and professional, but truly outstanding in his service. Lewis took the time to walk us through the menu with genuine enthusiasm, offering helpful suggestions and always appearing at just the right moment. His attention to detail and personable approach really elevated our evening. The food was phenomenal—every dish beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. Even the vegetarian options impressed, with generous portions ideal for sharing. The cocktails were equally divine, perfectly balanced and creative. And to top it all off, the sticky toffee pudding was one of the best we’ve ever had—absolutely unforgettable. We would return to Tattu in a heartbeat, and can’t recommend it enough. A definite must-visit, especially if you’re lucky enough to have Lewis as your waiter!

We were warmly greeted when arriving at the restaurant. The cherry blossom trees and the interior overall was very nice and cosy. It started of with some prawn crackers, these were unfortunately quite tasteless. Secondly came the gyozas, I can’t recall what they were filled with. I do recall pork but could be wrong. These were light and very tasty. Then the star of the show, the sticky beef short rib. That must have been sent down to earth by some higher power. The taste was amazing and the beef just fell apart. The sauce was sweet but not too sweet, it was perfect. The green beans were very tasty too. The broccoli had too much truffle for my taste. The service we received was fantastic too.

A Pretentious Scam Disguised as Fine Dining Rating: 1/5 (because 0 isn’t possible) I’ve eaten at plenty of restaurants around the world—some bad, some mediocre, and some truly special—but Tattu Edinburgh is by far one of the worst dining experiences I’ve ever had. It’s not just overpriced—it’s a blatant scam. What they serve is not Chinese food. It’s generic, low-quality dishes slathered in sugary sauces, dressed up in fancy descriptions, and presented in a nice interior to fool you into thinking it’s gourmet. Don’t fall for it. Our bill came to £221.34 for two people. That’s with a mandatory 12.5% service charge—which is audacious, considering the service was rushed, unhelpful, and frankly rude. The staff seemed more interested in upselling than actually serving us. Examples of their deception and culinary crimes: We were casually asked if we wanted “some shrimp chips to start”—sounded complimentary or minor. Turns out that meant £11 for a few stale rice crisps you could buy at any Asian grocery for 99p. The cocktail we ordered (billed as high-end and elaborate) tasted like a half-glass of pineapple juice. It cost £35. Yes, £35 for juice in a fancy glass. The "Sesame salad" was just bland coleslaw, no sesame, no flavor. And that was £10. The “Sticky Pork Belly” was described as slow-cooked with Chinese flavors. What arrived was dry, oven-roasted pork in a cheap BBQ sauce—£15 for something worse than pub food. The beans (meant to be garlicky and savory) were drowned in sugar and burnt garlic—absolutely inedible at £10 for a tiny portion. The seafood clay pot was supposed to be in a ginger-spring onion broth. What we got was four frozen shrimp, a few bites of rubbery fish, and a pool of sickly-sweet soy syrup—£28 for something that would be unacceptable in a food court. The pepper beef was the least offensive dish, but still drowned in some unmentioned sauce that made it a weird, cloying mess. £32, and we didn’t finish it. The fried noodles were such a disaster—broken into tiny 2–3cm pieces, flavorless, soggy—we sent them back. Even the white rice was undercooked and sticky in the worst way. It’s literally shocking how badly they managed to screw up plain rice. Scallops? We got two tiny ones, drowning in their terrible pre-made XO sauce—£16. Oh—and £5.25 for a bottle of water. In Edinburgh. Laughable. Every single item was grossly misrepresented on the menu. Not one thing we ate matched the flavors or descriptions. If this place used honest language, it would read more like: “Cheap ingredients, sugary sauces, aggressively upsold, ludicrously overpriced.” They are not a high-end restaurant. They are a high-end con. This place is a masterclass in style over substance. Flashy decor, Instagram bait cocktails, and zero culinary integrity. It’s food for people who don’t actually like or understand Chinese cuisine. I wouldn’t recommend this place to my worst enemy. Save yourself. Literally any other Chinese restaurant in Edinburgh will be a better experience and 1/10th the cost. Tattu Edinburgh is a scam. Avoid it at all costs.

Outstanding food and service, what a wonderful and memorable evening! We enjoyed the short ribs and duck pancakes to start. Our mains were the wok fired angry bird, caramel soy beef filet and duck fried rice. The chef does an especially fabulous job with their preparation of the duck and beef dishes. It was hands down our favorite meal of our time (over 10 days) in Scotland. We can't wait to enjoy their London and/or Birmingham locations when we next return to the UK. We came to Tattu for an experience and omg it did not disappoint m! We received vouchers as a wedding gift and decided to go all out. Upon arrival every single person was so attentive but not over the top. Our waiter Kieron was amazing! He explained everything on the menu for us and even recommended a few things. We decided as it was our first time to go for the modern sharing menu and it was to die for! Full of flavours and the amount of food you get for two people is amazing! This restaurant was massively hyped on social media sites and we were looking forward to the dining experience. Unfortunately the food was bland and unappetising. It was also priced extortionately. Two soft drinks a starter and three mains was 86 pounds! Also did not like the waitress insisting that two mains was 'not enough' (it was) and the fact that there were four of them in such a tiny place. If you are a hipster and want to believe the 'Emperors New Cuisine' then go for it...

Best sweet and sour pork I’ve ever had. Slight mix up with the order number, totally my fault, many thanks for sorting it out. The food was incredible, very glad I waited!

We ordered the takeaway as the dine-in restaurant is still closed! Quick service and most importantly there was a gluten free menu which had loads of options! The food was authentic, we had the chilli ribs/soft shell crabs/egg fried rice/sweet and sour chicken/beef in black bean sauce. The location is great and the staff were kind. Highly recommend, especially great place for a gluten free friendly chinese restaurant!

Excellent Chinese restaurant. We have visited several times over the years for family occasions and the experience has been consistently good. Lovely decor and ambience, very friendly and efficient staff, food was all delicious. Thoroughly recommend.
