Gluten free heaven - consistently excellent, I love the lemon chicken and the salt and pepper chicken - delicious!

Great option for anyone who needs to eat gluten free, as a coeliac I had a great meal and experience here. We were craving British Asian takeaway food and it definitely satisfied the craving! Service was friendly and quick.

We are frequent customers of Karen's Unicorn and love eating here. It temporarily closed due to a fire for a few weeks. However, it reopened a couple of weeks ago for takeaway. We ordered food here on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. It was yummy as usual with very high standards, best Chinese food in Edinburgh! We ordered the salt and chili chicken, house special curry, aromatic crispy duck, fried rice and mixed starter for 2. 10/10 delicious! Highly recommend due to the service, quality and taste of this restaurant. The staff is always welcoming and even helped carry my food to my car. Thank you!

Cosy spot, revere a table through the website. Hade the butterfly prawns, crispy wontons, duck spring rolls and bao buns for starters. The butterfly prawns were the best oit of the bunch. For main we had the crispy beef. Okay food, not very flavorful but cost place and great staff.

Sin gluten Tremenda selección en el menú de GF y tenía un sabor increíble. Esta es nuestra nueva opción para la comida china y no puedo hablar lo suficiente sobre lo bien que sabía todo y lo seguro que me sentí comiendo la comida. El personal estaba muy bien informado sobre GF y contaminación cruzada, lo que hizo que toda la experiencia gastronómica fuera muy agradable.

Llevo yendo a este restaurante al menos 15 años. La comida siempre ha sido excelente. Generalmente tenemos sopa, cangrejo con cáscara suave, costillas de pekin, rollos de primavera de pato, pato asado, un plato de carne, puerto asado, pescado monje, berenjena, pak choy, arroz, fideos fritos wok . . Con el paso de los años definitivamente se ha encarecido (en términos reales). Pagamos £ 220 por 6 personas (sin alcohol) en octubre de 2024. Las porciones son algo más pequeñas que hace muchos años. Las sillas definitivamente necesitan ser tapizadas. Siempre me ha parecido excelente el servicio aunque algunos de los jóvenes necesitan un poco de orientación. A pesar de estos negativos siempre estoy decepcionado cuando como comida china en otro lugar y, en consecuencia, trato de ir al unicornio de Karen en la mayoría de mis viajes a Edimburgo. Ciertamente he disfrutado mucho cada comida que he tenido allí.

Qué estafa tan horrible estoy Desde Liverpool y quería un scran chino con la señora que cumple años era y fue aconsejado por el personal del motel uno este era un buen chino ( que era mi error de la señora 2 del día ) de todos modos tuvimos que coger taxi a este lugar como estaba lloviendo trató de conseguir una mesa pero estaba lleno ( que era mi error de la señora 1 calle no sonando 1 calle ) jajajajajaja de todos modos pedimos patatas fritas arroz frito de huevo y carne de frijol negro rollo de pollo cosas por £ 39 lo que un disgusto patatas fritas muy horribles donde cortar uñas duro y masticable el arroz frito de huevo era arroz hervido y la guindilla de res no era agradable y podría haber comprado mejor en McDonalds como al menos me hubiera gustado POR FAVOR NO ORDENES DESDE AQUÍ ES IMPRESIONANTE Y BARATO TAKKY SCRAN SÓLO DESPERDICIARÁS TU DINERO EN COMIDA Yuk CARA SI YO FUERA CAPAZ DE ANOTAR CERO NO PUEDO ESPERAR PARA MOSTRAR A MI SEÑORA LO QUE HE ESCRITO JAJAJA

Turned up on Tuesday 8th October at approximately 7:30pm. Doors closed. Checked opening times and it should have been opened. Tried ringing the bell twice, no response. Luckily we stumbled across a great place 5 mins away in Broughton Street.

Went there twice while we were in Edinburgh. If you're in the mood for Chinese food there's not a better place.

Wonderful gluten-free menu (all the gluten eating people enjoyed theirs as well!) Delicious food. Great atmosphere, very friendly and helpful staff. Would definitely recommend it. There are a couple of steps to get in the building.

After a long day of hospital visiting it was easy to park outside. Select from the takeaway menu and have an excellent meal. Must dine in sometime.

Not sure how this establishment is getting more than 2 stars from other reviewers. That was definitely not our experience. Seating was very uncomfortable - one of our chairs had an extra cushion attached to the top with some strings/rope, to offset the missing upholstery. Service was slow - multiple staff standing around chatting; only one young gentleman was doing the work of waiting tables. Food was inedible - we ordered the fried rice, spring rolls and battered chicken among other things. Spring rolls were extremely greasy with no flavor/taste. The battered chicken for the kids was worse than what you could get from the frozen food section at your local shopping. Of all the lovely places we dined at in Edinburgh this was a mistake we are trying to forget. (We chose this place because of the online reviews - we were clearly misled)

We were looking for a nice Restaurant and came across this one on Saturday evening, what a gem, we arrived at 6.30pm and it was quite busy, but they has lots of staff going about, for Starters we ordered Chicken Satay Skewers and Vegetable Spring Rolls, good size portions, and for our mains we had Beef Chow Mein and Chicken Curry with Wok fried noodles, I must say this meal was outstanding, the best Cantonese Restaurant we have been to, next time we are in Edinburgh we will be back.

A wonderful Cantonese dinner with Son 2. He selected 4 starters to share and 3 mains, a mix of beef, chicken, fish and prawn with egg-fried rice. Everything was superb as ws the ice-cold Tiger beer. The service was prompt and efficient. Will def return.

Best gluten free Chinese I've been to yet! Loads of options staff very friendly and helpful. Got a takeaway and it was first class will be back for the dining experience!

This is the best Chinese I’ve eaten in a long time. Shredded chicken was crispy and well cooked, egg fried rice was the best I’d tried. The atmosphere was nice and the decor felt authentic. All staff lovely

Best Chinese food I've had in a long time. Service was prompt and efficient even keeping the table and settings clean between courses.

Could only give this place a 4/5 because the portion sizes were quite small. Any main plate is really for 2 people, not more. And for the cost, it's quite expensive. The service is amazing. The staff is incredibly attentive, I believe the owners were there too and they were very kind. Would recommend just remember the price is quite high for the size of dish.

I wouldn’t even recommend this restaurant to anyone, I came up from England to spend some quality time with my siblings the service was slow, we ordered grey goose drinks instead got Smirnoff , the staff member lied about saying it was the right drink even though we seen them pour it out at the bar. We received a metal scourers in our chicken curry and when we showed it to the manager she was being very rude she replied back by saying “that happens often and I’ll take the curry off the bill”. Instead of showing a little compassion and be polite about by saying I’ll give you 10-20% off the bill, she just stood there shouting what do you want me to do! We will definitely not be going back to this place, food quality was very very poor and manager needs a little bit of training when it comes to service or resolving issues. Absolute joke!!

Back here after a few year and it was Good now as it was then...dumpling starter was lush and husband had salty and chilli chicken followed by beef in oyster sauce and sirloin steak in a sauce was lush...bottle beer a bit expensive..but meal was divine

We decided to try Chinese for the first time in Edinburgh and we weren't disappointed. A good range of food and wine, including many GF options (a whole separate menu). We didn't order anything particularly fancy, but the food was fresh and well cooked. Our waiters/waitresses were both efficient and friendly. They also have a cool digital ordering system in the entrance hall for takeaway.

Been here a couple of times, once with work maybe eight years ago and more recently with family last week. I had an excellent impression from my first visit and happy to say it was consistent with our experience recently. The service here really is impeccable. Very friendly and just the right balance of attentive but not invasive. The food was as delicious and fresh as I remembered and there was a wonderful lively atmosphere on a Saturday evening. This is the place to go for Chinese food in Edinburgh, so good!

Although this restaurant is ‘off the main drag’ it’s well worth checking out! Not many Chinese restaurants over an extensive gluten free menu but this does! The regular menu is excellent too with loads of quality choices

After reading reviews we booked on a cold Wednesday night and glad we did. I had a chicken meal and my wife had a vegetarian dish, both were very tasty. I would go as far and say my dish was the best Chinese meal I have ever had. Nothing fancy decor wise but good food reviews and that's what counts in my book. We will be back next time we are in Edinburgh.

Love this restaurant. Being gluten free it’s tough trying to find a decent Chinese restaurant, let alone a great one. Service is fantastic, just hope they make it bigger in the future. I would say value for money compared to othere chinese restaurants in Edinburgh it is not brill (portion is pretty small), hence knocking down a star.

We ate here 2 nights out of three during our trip to Edinburgh- that in itself will tell you how much we enjoyed it. Excellent food , big portions , excellent choice / variety on the menu. One of out group is gluten free and they has a separate full menu of gluten free options which was excellent. Staff are friendly. Would recommend booking in advance We were lucky to get in both nights.

Came here with my partner and our friends. It is very popular and you must book on the weekend. The food was overall really good and the service was really friendly and quick. The chicken satay main wasn’t as good as I’d hoped for but everything else people had was good.

The most amazing gluten free menu in terms of choice. The range and extent of the menu was fantastic. The taste is the dishes was incredible, definitely try and make all of your party eat off the gluten free menu to enable to enjoy everything. For starters we shared 4 gf dishes between 6 of us, including peanut satay chicken, salt and chilli chicken (intense chilli taste which was so tasty), water paper prawn (really nice flavour) and seaweed. For main I kept to my own dish of chichen fried rice and stir fried vegetables (in photo, this is just part of the portion) with gf chilli soya sauce which was especially made (again in photo). The taste of the main was to die for. Important to note that there are no gf prawn crackers and you are warned on this when seated. This would be the only improvement I would suggest. Highly highly recommend Karen’s Unicorn for gf food. Also for non gf food treat of party loved their meals highlighting that flavour was immense. Recommend that you book as it is quite a small restaurant if you wish to dine in they also do take away.

This is a restaurant we have been wanting to try for some time so we decided to try a takeaway last week. Sadly it was a huge disappointment. The pork dish we got was full of fat and the sauce lacking any flavour. The chicken curry was also tasteless and the chicken was very soft (a strange texture to it), there was something off putting about it. The curry sauce was watered down and lacking flavour also. Chips were very unappealing too. A terribly poor experience. We had hoped to venture into the restaurant but we shan't be returning now.

Service absolutely awful, appalling! Extremely rude it’s actually unbelievable! No customer service at all within the whole place. Tried to place an order, the gentleman was so rude on the phone and just put the phone down. Another time was in the waitress dropped sauce all over me, she then ran into the back don’t apologise or say anything or give us tissue or try and clean it up. She just left into the back, no one came to try and help clean up or assist or apologise. After this, no one came over to the table at all. At any point we could see the server serving other people but stop serving us. We then had to enquire and a different service started serving us and no point. Did anyone ever apologise for it or help the clean the sauce dropped all over me.

I loved the food here! One of the only GF-catering Chinese restaurants in Edinburgh. Was really good to have crispy chicken with sweet and sour sauce again.

Lovely little restaurant, perfect place for dinner after a few drams at the Whisky Society. The spicy squid was delicious!

Recommended for gluten free customers. Menu is clearly marked and staff were very helpful with additional questions. Remember to book ahead. That this place was busy even in Nov is a testament to the quality.

Super yummy!! I took my mother here last night for dinner, food was hot, fresh and delicious. We ordered the honey chilli chicken, vegetable chow mein and rice. Staff were attentive and not pushy. Definitely recommend.

First visit to this restaurant after a recommendation by friends Arrived without a reservation and the staff couldn’t have been nicer, needed table back in 1hr 20mins and that was fine because service was super quick Food was freshly cooked, hot and quite tasty although we weren’t overly impressed with the quality of the meat in the beef and black bean & the fillet steak Cantonese! Unfortunately I’ve had better many times so probably wouldn’t rush back. Nice enough but I do think there are better Chinese restaurants

Called here on the off chance whilst on a family visit to Edinburgh. Although they were unable to accommodate us straight away, they suggested we return in 45 mins. True to their word a table was available - and it was most definitely worth the wait! Food was delicious, service was polite and efficient. Having eaten in a lot of average restaurants that really could and should do better, this place is a welcome affirmation that some places really can be very good at what they do. Eat here if you can. PS Don’t go for a drink at the pub across the road if you find yourself waiting for a table. £24 for two glasses of red wine that were nothing special (you can buy it for £5 a bottle in Tesco and €3 a bottle in Italy) is daylight robbery.

Been here a few times over the years as the food is always really good. This time was for a family birthday so a special occasion. Have to say, the restaurant really could do with a bit of smartening up - I don’t think it’s changed in 10 years - as it would make all the difference, chairs are very saggy too. The food, though, is still great. Love the crispy duck, and pork dumplings as starters. Shredded chicken and beef mains really good too as there’s a lot more actual meat than you get in many places. Service was a little confused when we were there - suspect some staff were new. Not the cheapest but you get what you pay for.

Simply one of the best Chinese takeaway options in Edinburgh, if not Scotland. Inside the restaurant is lovely, but I can only speak for the quality of the food and it's first class. Bit more expensive than you'd expect but you are clearly getting what you pay for, and that's a top rated Chinese kitchen.
