Taste of South Street Bar & Kitchen in Exeter

Came here with a friend. I didn’t order anything but my friend got some dishes and drinks. I had a caffe nero cup with coffee and the worker started harassing about and threatening me that she will throw away my coffee if I don’t pour it in another cup. What is this?? The workers, especially an older woman were really rude. My friend called her out on her behaviour and she called me and my friend dirty idiots…

Not very comfortable, staff doesn't seem very motivated, price/performance is out of proportion

Great bar in the city centre. A great night for the Rewind reggae night there.

A good place to study or do work but the food wasn’t amazing, I would definitely come back for drinks and nibbles though! The service was great and they had a wide range of drinks.!

Always great service and a chilled atmosphere. Great cocktails too!

At the Christmas market, called in for a drink and a quick bite, really excellent food and service.

Popped in for coffee when the Christmas market was too crowded, ended up having the garlic mushroom mac & cheese - it was very tasty and the portion size was generous. Service was good and the prices reasonable for such a good location and service. Hoping to go back and enjoy the live music next time.

Do not go for breakfast. Took an hour even though it was empty, came out freezing cold, clearly microwaved as there was a sausage that was so rock hard we couldn’t even cut with a knife. Offered a new one which took a further 25+ minutes to come out. Cold poached eggs and basically everything undercooked. Absolutely vile and a total waste of money. Avoid!

Slow service and awful hot chocolates

Waited 30 mins for food and it wasn't busy. My wife's smashed avocado on toast looked like green jam and it was cold. My scrambled eggs on toast was cold too My grandchildren could have done better. They also use a dumb waiter for both deliveries and dirty dishes at the same time. Got a refund but won't be going back. Awful

Absolutely wonderful food, excellent staff and amazing atmosphere. Has a good range of vegan, vegetarian, gluten free options suitable for even the most complex dietary restrictions like myself. Has great wheelchair access with a very roomy interior and excellent wc set up (no bins or other furniture placed in wheelchair transfer space). Would definitely recommend and will definitely be returning.

We love coming here as they have very reasonable prices for decent food in the centre of the city. The service is always great. The drinks are decently-priced and in a very convenient location within the city. Our only issues are the (sometimes) random closing times and the fact we've been there twice now and we haven't been able to have a drink to due to them cleaning all their lines at 12pm in the day! They've lost money due to this as we've had to find another place to drink. We really want to support this business as we really like it but feel sometimes they make it harder than it needs to be!

First time for breakfast and it was top marks . Would definitely return and recommend.

Andy was absolutely amazing with 1st class customer service. I was delighted with the choice of Gluten Free dishes. I would definitely recommend the chicken breast burger 🍔 😋 Delicious.

Been here a few times and all was good but today was particularly unimpressed by the attitude and rude responses to a polite request about wanting a drink topped up (it was at least 3cms from the top and looked very much short of the mark). As I was rudely educated on the making of a cappuccino by some gen z teenager I literally could not believe who she thought she was talking to. Literally just wanted the cappuccino topped up and could have been an easy fix but instead was spoken to like class A c***. I am not one to kick off or complain but that customer service was embarrassing. Won't be so polite next time that's for sure.

Lovely clean cafe in a good location with friendly staff and student discount. I had a carrot, coriander and sweet potato soup (the soup of the day) and it was marvellous!!

Food and service good. Old couple beside of us peeing their pants not so much. Not what you want. Our food and drinks were great. People next to us wetting their selves terrible. They didn’t even have the decency to tell the staff they did it. Just disappeared. Disgusting! Poor staff having to clear it up. I felt so sorry for them.

Fantastic place for lunch or just a hot chocolate, very friendly atmosphere, great staff, wonderful hot chocolate. Easy to get to, great view of Exeter Cathedral from the window.

Friendly service. Burnt coffee. My flat white was very hot and bitter, it was almost undrinkable. It had obviously been over extracted in their espresso machine at a high temperature. Go in for a friendly chat, but not for the coffee.

Staff so friendly and looked after us. Stumbled over this place and so glad we did. Thank you for a fab experience 😊 we didn't have any food just drinks but upon a return visit I hope to taste what's on offer

Visited for coffee and very nice cake on a busy Saturday morning on our way to the cathedral's Christmas Market. Quick service. Friendly staff. Everywhere else had long queues.

Hidden gem, restricted menu due to staff shortages, but good food and well made range of coffees. All at a reasonable price for a city centre. Some students meeting up and course working; groups of older people and old gits like me, so it caters for every one. Only downsides are the toilet on the top floor (but disabled toilet on ground floor) and a bit cold for old gits like me, but in warmer weather you can also sit outside.

Went there on Friday 12th of November 2022 and had a lovely evening. They kept the kitchen open slightly longer than normal for us and we were very grateful to them. Food was amazing, very well cooked, well presented and a good size portion. Everything was very tasty and there was four clean plates at the end of the meal. The price was very, very good. With so many other places making it too expensive to eat out it was good to see a bill we could afford. Big thanks to all the lovely staff there who made us all feel very welcome, will definitely come back next time we are in Exeter.

All very well going back to basics and have industrial floors, walls and ceilings but very dirty, looked drab. Particularly around doors. Looked like the dirt and rubbish from outside has found a home inside. Customer service was great! The food lovely. Had a latte and a flapjack. Just atmosphere was the opposite of cosy.

Came here for brunch in a sunday, the food options were quite limited and for £6.50 the wraps were quite small, but still tasty. The chai latte here was really good with 15% NHS discount it was only £2.12! So great price. The vibes here were very good aswell

Travelled in from London for work and was very hungry! Came across this place and the seating outside attracted me (warm sunny day). I ordered the vegan breakfast, gobbled it down asap. The service was excellent. I was still hungry so ordered another vegan breakfast. Good stuff. If I’m back in the area, I’d definitely eat there again 👍🏾

Bad experience overall. No one attends when I first came in, sat at a four person table as the restaurant is less then half full, was asked to sit on a smaller table as it’s “lunch time”, the two person table were next to the toilet, bar and the bar stool table had flys on it. Therefore have to sit on the two person table next to the toilet. (Later found them seating a lady of one to the big table, opposite to what I was told earlier on! I guess that explains the lack of customer during their busy lunch-time). Waited about 40 minutes for a breakfast, later saw another Chinese customer asking for their food order as they have waited 50 minutes for their food, the lady say “well you can ask for drinks and food to come together”..... Food was less then satisfactory, ordered English breakfast, toast was very thin while sausage was harder then the table. Talked to the waitress about it and never got a sorry or apology what so ever. Below average food with bad service, would not recommend!

Great cheese and red onion chutney toasties. I could see some lovely lunchtime meals coming out for customers.

Friendly helpful staff and very nice coffee. Food wise all I can mention is the BLT sandwich. Which was excellent!

Brilliant service - stopped for breakfast. They could do anything gluten free, the food was great, and the staff were friendly and helpful. Fab tables outside in an old fashioned courtyard.

I hired the bar for my 30th birthday. The staff were all lovely and the venue was perfect for the evening! Rose was great and very helpful.

Just had a lovely breakfast here. Food was very tasty and the coffee was also really good. We were planning to go to Cote but thought we’d check out this place instead. Half the price and the food much nicer!

Really good place for spend time

The food wasn’t as good as last time we visited (new owners). Dry meat. It was OK, but not great. Service was a bit awkward.

We had an amazing experience here today, the staff were really friendly and the food was amazing all homemade and amazing with accommodating to my daughter will definitely be back!

Nipped in for a quick cocktail and I’m so glad we did. The staff were friendly and the cocktails delicious - would recommend the espresso martini!

Place was clean, tidy and Covid friendly. Food arrive without any delays, it was tasty and well presented with plenty of it. Staff were friendly and helpful, would recommend a visit.

Best chicken burger I have had in a long time!

This used to be a great little restaurant, now it is rubbish. From walking in it felt like no one cared. Took ages before anyone asked if we wanted drinks, then took ages for drinks to arrive. We actually watched and heard the lad taking stuff to tables say that the juice I had ordered was 5 days out of date, 5 minutes later it was brought to our table along with a completely flat coke. At this point we got up and left. Total shambles with the staff wandering about aimlessly, no leadership in the restaurant at all. Note to owners, if you don't sort yourselves out you will be another restaurant that goes bust. Put a decent manager in the restaurant who sets some standard's and leads the team. Clean environment, a friendly welcome, sit people at their table with a menu, ask if they would like drinks, if not come back a few minutes later to take a drinks order. Bring the drinks promptly, take the food order, bring the food, check in after 5 minutes that everything is OK and if anyone needs anything. Not rocket science.

Waited ages for food. Asked us to pay before food came. When it eventually came it was luke warm and ordered skinny fries and got chunky fries. When we said this we were told they had no skinny fries! I would have asked for a refund but we are too polite. I have never left food in a cafe but really couldn't eat what we had. Cheese toastie..looked and tasted as though it has sat for half a day on the table. Macaroni cheese did not taste cheesy , more like aniseed. Several weeks later and no one has bothered to even reply to this review.

Just wanted to say how disappointed we were with the service at the Taste Of South Street ...... it felt like nobody wanted to serve anyone and the ale offering was poor .... very disappointing .... left a sour Taste in the Mouth !!!!
