Shimizu Sushi in Exeter

This place is a gem! Order each item as you intend to have it arrive at the table rather than all at once. This is my favourite sushi east of the Pacific coast. I highly recommended the stir-fry beef and mushroom it exceeded expectations greatly.

Nice place with authentic Japanese food. Chirashi don is a rice bowl with a variety of sashimi on top. Enjoyed Takoyaki balls. Tea choice is very limited. At the end was disappointed about 10% service charge, just don’t be shy to ask to remove it.

First time I went there I wasn't sure what to get and asked them to surprise me. They make me a chicken katzu I think it's called. Bloody marvellous. Reasonable prices aswell. Spent around £20. It may not look alot but trust me, it fills you.

Forcing people to order food through an app then forcing them to pay service charge is not fair when no service is provided!!! This needs to be reviewed!

I used to order from here all the time however this time I ordered a platter and I asked if they can change octopus Negri to salmon they agreed on the phone however when we picked it up, they refused and changed it to crab sticks. They said we put random fish on there and they’re not able to change it. I wouldn’t mind so much if they said that they can’t guarantee what they could put in there but they completely agreed on the phone that they would change it to salmon. I did ask her are you sure? She said yes no problem. As you see on the pictures, the ratio of rice and salmon avocado is the same as the supermarket. we used to highly rate this place not so much anymore. definitely gone downhill Compared to Jindoou Exeter the sushi ratio of rice, salmon and avocado is way better.

We have eaten here a few times in the last 2 years and it's actually on our roster of restaurants that we would always go to. Overall our experience was good, except for our last visit, it was terrible. Sushi as always was good but tonkatsu was so bad. I complained that the pork was not fully cooked. I actually ate almost a third of it because I wanted to make sure that the entire meat was not fully cooked as I didn't want to complain (I don't like complaining at a restaurant unless it's really bad). But alas I complained and they insisted that it is not fully cooked. Maybe for them, it was, but it tastes so off for me. They insisted repeatedly that I was wrong which is quite a bad service for me. I had tonkatsu in other places, including Japan and I know what the taste of not fully cooked meat is. It is the most awful tonkatsu ever. I did not eat it after that and still paid for the entire thing. Suffice it to say, we will not come back nor order takeaway from this place ever again. Also, I am already nauseous, my tummy is hurting, and I am on the verge of vomiting after an hour of eating it. Awful experience, will not recommend it.

This hidden gem is undoubtedly my favourite restaurant in Exeter. The vibe and food are unmatched and unrivalled. Coming to Shimizu Sushi has become a staple in my life. Whilst it is hard to go wrong with food choice here, I would highly recommend: Kimchi seafood udon pot Yokozuna sushi platter Rock shrimp tempura. Delivery is also fantastic. Fast, hot, and very nicely packaged. I’d give 10 stars if I could, but 5 will have to do.

I constantly either order food from Uber eats or dine in, it’s a lovely small Japanese restaurant. The sushi is fresh and very reasonably priced, the menu has a wide variety of options for sushi and hot food. Definitely recommend.

Great little restaurant Having visited Japan last month I can honestly say the food I had was on par with what I had there. I didnt get photos of my boyfriend's food as was too busy eating my own. The ramen was delicious as was the Karage. I will most definitely be going back again and again

We so appreciated the food gift for my daughter's birthday. Both of us liked the QR code method of ordering which made adding dishes or drinks easy & efficient. We are looking forward to returning for another meal!

I can't believe that I can have a delicious Japanese meal in Exeter.

The sushi itself is good but the customer service is where it lets itself down. I ordered food from them tonight and as they deliver themselves through Deliveroo everything is done less officially. I was waiting for my food to arrive and saw a car drive away so I rang up to see if they just got lost getting to me, where I was told that I already had my food( I didn’t). I explained about 7 times to the lady that who ever she has given the food to was not me as I was standing there empty handed and all I had back in response was someone had said “Annie” and picked up the food and that I shouldn’t try to scam them for food, which was repeated to me multiple times. Where I kept saying back whoever you have just given the food to wasn’t me. After a while I had to give up as the lady just wasn’t listening to me and instead preferred to just shout down the phone. After later inspection someone came to my door saying they accidentally picked up my order and she was picking up for someone called “Maddie” I understand the names sound similar but the restaurant need to have more trust in their customers as I was just being told I was trying to scam them when in actual fact THEY had given my order away to someone else. Not impressed.

Food is very average. Overcharged at checkout. First time overcharged by £7.5. We told her we hadn't order for that dish then she calculated it again, this time adding a service charge of £2.76. We were in a hurry and didn't ask her what the service fee was. I was thinking there is no need to waste time for a few pounds. If they want a good business they need customers trust They definitely lost my trust. Won’t go back there again.

Probably the best japanese food I've had outside of Japan. Prices and portion were all very reasonable. Small restaurant but I loved that, it felt very cosy and staff were attentive. Highly recommend the Beef Gyudon and Takoyaki!

Always come here for Donburi beef pork and eel. Tried many many Japanese style restaurants around Devon, and this is definitely the best.

Stumbled across this little gem on a walk! my lord the sushi here is good!! I only stopped in to try it out. A full belly later id tried almost half the menu. it was very tasty and I will be back!

I took my grandmother here for her 91st birthday! She wanted to try something she’d never had before. The staff were super lovely, and attentive. Even received a free dish as it was her birthday! She loved the experience, and really enjoyed trying all the new food. My mother is vegetarian and enjoyed her Vegetarian Roll, Goma Wakame and Agedashi Tofu (pictured). Highly recommend the Red Dragon Roll, and the Mango and Cream cheese sushi, but everything looked delicious! The food was brilliant, and served very quickly! We went all out as it was a birthday, but it was affordable! They have their menu pictured online. If only I lived in Exeter, I’d be here all the time!!! Genuine hidden Japanese gem! Thank you 😊 🙏

everyone come to this place! they have a wide range of japanese food, not just sushi. they have noodles, rice dishes, fish dishes etc and they taste amazing! i’m not even a fan of fish but their sushi is great i really recommend. Updated review: I come here regularly to eat in and for takeaway and it’s great to see a small private business be so busy all the time. they really care about delivering the food at the best quality to the tables and to the doors! the owner is really friendly and i regularly see her interacting with customers, overall good customer service. the food is always really good too. please give them a chance and support their business, they try their hardest.

Ok so this is my first time here and I was disappointed. I asked what was in the miso soup and the waiter skipped over what was in it. When we recieved the order it had no taste and it was luke warm. I ordered a wafu salad, and the only way to describe it was a salad from lidl with what I can only describe as a either a satay sauce or a peanut butter sauce. The mains were nice, I.e treyaki chicken and sizzling squid 🐙 but could have done with extra sauce with both. Looking at bill adding an extra surcharge was ridiculous. I norm round up when paying but I didn't feel like l should have to as it was not great. Won't be visiting again.

As someone that eats out a lot. This was the worst sushi I've ever had at a restaurant. This definitely budget sushi. Made in batches. And using frozen fish. The tako yakinis also the worst I've ever had. Bonito flakes looked like they were going to give out. They were not the crispness you'd expect . The takoyski itself was soft and like it had been microwaved instead of it being cooked fresh there and then

An experience for sure. Most importantly, the food was delicious. My friend and I had some Sushi and some Ramen, and they were both excellent, the 2nd best in Exeter. If my review was on food and drink alone, it would be a 5 star. However, some of the service and menu was hard to communicate and not clear, which resulted in a miscommunication and costly bill. However, mistakes between people happen, and so this was not a be all and end all. The worst part for me was the attempt to sneak in a mandatory 10% service charge, which is not displayed at all until the final bill. Consequently, I asked to have it removed. Eventually it was done so. Overall, great food, but better service, ie, coke instead of diet coke, and a more clear menu, especially the sushi platters, would aid the restaurant, and leave service charges up to the customer.

I’ve been happy with everything we’ve ordered so far. It’s good quality food, prepared well. It definitely hits the spot when I’m craving sushi and although slightly more expensive, I’ve found it’s worth it. I love the seaweed salad and the variety of the menu means there’s something for everyone.

Menu advertised 6 types of fish of sashimi for £22 but then arrived with 3 types instead of 6 (the majority being prawns, about 6 in a line). I asked about this as it was falsely advised on the menu and certainly wasn’t worth the asking price by ash stretch of the imagination. I ate the meal as I’m too bloody polite to send it back. Enquired about the price after as it was only 3 types of fish and was told that it was only 3 types because of import troubles so tough luck - I was advised that the price was the same because I ate the meal and I “should have sent it back”. I can’t believe how scummy this place is for a Japanese establishment, as if I should have known that they were going to rip me off beforehand?! Bear in mind that there was another meal on the menu for 3 types of fish for much cheaper. They should have said that BEFORE the meal was served or even ordered (not “oh I should have told the server, my bad” hoping that I wouldn’t notice) Really bad experience, scummy place, avoid.

Forced to pay 10% service fee at the conclusion of the meal. When asked why, was told that the restaurant needed to pay 20% VAT so customers needed to pay 10% to cover them. No notice of this policy was written on their menus or outside their door. Felt bullied to abide by this illegal practice. Shame they took this approach as it ruined an otherwise nice experience. 😕

We visited Shimizu, for our first time, after a recommendation from very good friends. The restaurant is small and tucked away on a side street. However, after 30 minutes inside it felt like the main business was more inclined towards a takeaway/delivery service rather than a restaurant. We were really looking forward to our lunch on a bitterly cold day but have to say it did not give us the "wow" factor. It was very cold inside, so much so that I never took my coat off. The "service", 1 lady, was friendly. The menu is big and varied with great choices, athough unfortunately they had no Tuna on the menu. The portions are very generous but there was little sauce on the Chicken Katsu Curry Don to soak up the huge portion of rice. My wife loves Sushi and has had it all over the world but she was not impressed here. The food was acceptable but nothing special. A couple of other things which we found disappointing. We ordered 3 Green Teas for which we were charged £6 for 1 small teapot with 1 teabag! Obviously the tea was very weak. To our surprise there was a 10% service charge added to the bill. This place is by no means The Ivy, Lympstone Manor or Mickeys at Exmouth, all of which we have visited several times and the charge is 12.5%. We expect to pay a service charge at a high end restaurant but we would not have expected it at this type of establishment.

Rather unprepossessing but really good, authentic sushi. Unusually for a Japanese restaurant, it has a surprisingly good choice of vegan and vegetarian options - the Chilli Soya Tofu was excellent. Not the cheapest, but in life you sometimes have to pay for quality. The likes of Well Street and Sidwell Street are a refreshing change from the sterile chains in the Guildhall and Shimizu is well worth a visit.

Don't know where my previous review went, but I've gotten delivery from here twice now, both times the unagi don & agedashi tofu because they're delicious. The don portion was quite small the first time but increased the second time! I like that the takeout container is UK-made, too. Would definitely get food from here again.

Had a delivery while staying on holiday in Exeter. A great selection of food on offer, it was reasonably priced too. It was delivery speedily and with an easy, non-contact delivery driver. The fish looked and tasted nice and fresh, the soft-shell crab tasted a little tough, but I think this was due to travelling and sweating in the container during delivery. Would recommend.

I have ordered food from Shimizu many times without any issues. Ordered a delivery for my son's birthday celebration just after 6.30pm via Uber Eats. Update said the food will be with us between 8.05-8.25pm. Bearing in mind it's a Saturday night we thought the nearly 2 hours wait was ridiculously long but understandable. At 8.44 I called for an update on our food which was at this point an extra 20mins past it's the 2 hour delivery estimated time so I called the restaurant and asked where our good was? I got told the Uber Eats app was not working, which was not true. I asked what was going to be done about my order, whether there was going to be a complimentary item in my food. I was told no, the kitchen was swamped and it was impossible to get anything complimentary. I was told by the man I spoke to that I will get 15% off my next order. The problem with this solution to a very poor service is, because there isn't an independent competitor for this Sushi restaurant they can be as shoddy as they want and assume I will come back to order food from them again. The food when it turned up was the worst I've ever had. My Japanese rice was cold, my daughter's beef was shredded and stringy. We spent £60, had cold mediocre food and no one actually seemed to care. By the way, our delivery time got extended to between 8.45-9.15. food eventually turned up at 9.02pm. 2.5 plus hours after we ordered. Just not good enough.

The food is great. But when we ordered on Deliveroo the restaurant used its own driver, who refused to come up to the flat, asking us to come down. He left the order in front of the apartment building on the ground! Shameful really.
