This was our first visit to Edinburgh. We went into The Taste of Scotland (170 High Street) where we bought some Scottish biscuits at £3.99 a pack. The next shop we went into we saw the same biscuits for £4.99 for 3 packets. I returned to T.O.S. To complain, but the staff were not interested. On in its 43rd year The Taste of Scotland Scottish Show was a very nice introduction to Edinburgh. The grounds of historic Prestonfield, originally built in 1687 and visited by kings and royalty, are beautifully maintained and make a welcoming site as you arrive on the grounds and are met by a Scottish bagpiper. The dinner is served in a large formal dining room. It is unfortunate that the management is so concerned with stuffing so many people into the room that you end up feeling like a sardine. There is minimal room for staff to circulate as they deliver your meal. I give them credit for the quality service they deliver under the circumstances. Consider choosing a seat facing the stage or perhaps at the outer edge of the room. The menu includes: first a choice of pate' or carrot soup. The second course is haggis, the third course is a choice of Scotch Beef, poached fish or a vegetarian baked pastry with roasted courgettes and broccoli , tomato and basil sauce grated with Mull cheddar crumbs. The dessert is lemon meringue mousse .The soup, beef and lemon meringue mousse were my choice. Everyone who had the beef raved about it. The show included Three tenors, a female vocalist , a fiddler, dancers, a accordionist, pipers, drummer and a keyboard/pianist. It was a very good show, but a bit long for me. If you choose to sit with your back to the stage, it will become hard to maneuver your chair to turn around and see the show. It was a pleasant experience with the exception of the seats facing the back of the room being a bad choice.

We walked out of Edinburgh Castle at closing time and were famished. We'd seen pastries in the window of this nice shop earlier in the day, and thought they must have good food to go with that. Yep, and it was delicious! We both ordered fish and chips - perfectly cooked, and nice servings. My wife doesn't drink beer, but decided she would try a Thistly Cross cider and truly enjoyed it, while I drank an Innis and Gunn beer - wish I could get this at home! And yes, we took a lovely pastry after dinner and had it later in our flat. Highly recommend!

We stopped in here for a quick lunch while seeing the sights of the Royal Mile. The staff were very friendly and went out of their way to help someone in our group with food allergies. We ordered three different entrees and they were all excellent; you could tell the food was fresh and well-prepared. I thought the vegetarian haggis burger sounded inventive, so I had that! It was a lot better than some of the veggie burgers I have had at large chain restaurants. I thought the prices were reasonable and the selection was good for a place of this size. I was glad that we had stumbled upon it, and I would go back again.

My wife and I popped in to taste of Italy whilst on a short break to Edinburgh . It was quite busy around 7pm so we figured it must be good. We were heartily greeted by a friendly waitress and sat immediately at a table. The atmosphere was brisk with chattering diners and we felt we were in a good place. a chirpy waitress took our order, recommending the house merlot( not wrong there, delicious). I ordered the lasagne and my wife the spaghetti carbonara, with a side of garlic bread to share. The meal arrived after about 15 minutes. My lasagne was piping hot, very tasty and just what you'd expect . My wife's carbonara however was a tad disappointing. Not coated in a creamy sauce as described and rather to aldente for her liking. Now I know there can be regional variations among Italian chefs but this looked like the commis first attempt . The waitress was mortified that my wife had hardly touched her meal. We reassured her in true Scottish style that the food was fine but we'd had a big lunch.

We visited this little cafe after stumbling across it after visiting the castle. Me and my partner both fancied fish and chips so we thought this would be the ideal place. This has to be the nicest fish and chips I have ever had! Could not recommend this dish anymore! Fish was coated in a lovely light batter with yummy chips. I also tucked into the tartar sauce which I don't usually eat. The only problem is that the cafe is very small and there is not much room to move between the tables. Overall, I would visit this place again if we visit Scotland again!

Noticed on menu we would be charged 10% extra for service when paying the bill. We were hungry so ordered mushroom soup for the 4 of us. The soup was tepid on arrival at the table, and all 4 had to be sent back to be heated again. When we paid the waiter assumed we didn't want our change when paying cash, we had to ask for the change having paid 10% extra for service which fell short of expectations. We will not call again

We explained we had and wasn't keen on it he said he would do some of theirs for us to try - on the house. We ordered our lunch and the haggis came out first we tried and it was lovely which the manager said it would be. Seated rather quickly but immediately regretted it as it was the table immediately next to the register. The place is quite small, and had folks standing beside and around our table the entire meal. At one point, two workers exchanged another table’s bill by passing it over our table, right between the two of us. Fish and chips weren’t terrible, but a bit too oily. Unfortunately, this lunch also ended up being the most expensive meal we ate during our week plus in Scotland.

Came here on a whim as I was rather hungry. I ordered bangers and mash with a fanta for the total value of £13.20.The service was quick. My food arrived, being 3 small breakfast pork sausages, chunky slightly undercooked mashed potatoes with a drizzle of beef stock with water. The only highlight was my fanta. The wifi didn't even work and when I gesticulated to the waiter that I wasn't satisfied with the meal, she returned moments later and dumped the bill on the table before walking off.I paid the bill, with who I assume was the manager, approached me and asked what the issues were which I outlined. He responded by telling me that it's the way they're supposed to be cooked.I was left furious with this shockingly bad meal, so I walked out before I said/did something that I would later regret. The portion wasn't big enough to feed a child! You'd receive better food in a hostel made by someone who isn't a trained chef.Do not come here unless you're desperate to avoid the lags hanging around outside.

It would have been cheaper to take out the food but as it was raining we decided to sit in. the cafe is very small and narrow, the staff pack the diners in. If you need to get in or out of your chair, you have to shimmy past the person at the next table while they are eating. the toilets (one single toilet), are right next to the kitchen so if there's a queue on you are in the way of staff taking food out. It's a pricey Tourist Trap, however it's got very high overheads in this location so no surprise there. We were at the Edinburgh Festival and very hungry with every eaterie full to overflowing. The manager was genuinely friendly as were the staff. We did hurry them up, but they were pretty quick anyway. It has a feeling of a transport cafe about it.The decor, seating, tables etc had seen better days and a thorough maker over is long overdue. The menu was as in the name and the food was fine, nothing great, but tasty and filling. Prices were steep and £42 for fish & chips for 2, 3 soft drinks and a shared slice of cake was a surprise. We didn't notice the 10% service charge as the waitress skipped over the facility on the card machine. We got good service and gave them another gratuity - they probably do well from folk who don't realise that they have already been charged handsomely for it.Toilets - sliding doors with a seat next to a table for those queuing and its the same narrow corridor to the kitchen.

Ventured into Taste of Scotland after visiting Edinburgh Castle. What a mistake! We were greeted by a less than enthusiastic waitress and shown to our seats. It took 10 minutes for our order to be taken and a further 10 minutes for our water and orange juice to arrive. It was just us and 2 other tables in the place so completely inexcusable! Our order was 2 soups and 2 ham & cheese baguettes with chips which we received 50 minutes after we arrived. Soup was ok, baguette was atrocious and we couldn't find any relish that was listed on the menu, chips were frozen and laced with salt. We asked for the bill and ironically it was brought to our table straight away - service charge automatically added - no mention of this on menu or table! Queried with waitress - received blank stare, mumbled response and shrug of shoulders. Such a shame because I'm sure there are plenty of proper restauranteurs in Edinburgh who would give anything for a place in this location. It's clearly wasted on the current occupiers!

Me and my girlfriend went for lunch as you do when your fresh off the train and feeling peckish, we went here as it looked like a good place for lunch. It was busy, but the staff were quick to give menus and take take orders and we weren't waiting longer for food than any other place back home . The food was divine, the Haggis Tatties and neeps in whisky sauce was so good it has now placed haggis firmly on top as my most favourite food, the drinks were very different to anything you'll find down in Lincolnshire, the Innis and Gunn beers and Thistly Cross ciders are worth trying. The only two drawbacks were the price, which while not much higher than anywhere else you might find on the mile was quite steep for what we had, almost £30 for two mains and two drinks! The second is a COMPULSORY service charge of 15%. I don't think the service, basic as it was, was worth paying for, never mind making it compulsory. The food is amongst the best I've ever had at a resturant, it alone saves what is otherwise a very pricey bistro.

Once we were seated, it took a long time before waitress came to take our order. However, it wasn't too long a wait for our food. Afterwards, I had to finally ask for our bill. It was not busy. Pricey, for small meals. Wouldn't recommend,

Visited for lunch as the menu looked enticing. We both had ham baguettes which came with chips, but no side salad, which cost us around 9 pounds, the most I've ever paid for a sandwich! The baguette was lovely with some good flavours but not worth the price. The service was lacking, with minimal conversation. Although they were quite busy for a little place. What did annoy me was the service charge they added on automatically. And so I ended up paying 23 pounds for two cans of drink and two baguettes. This put us off having one of the delicious looking cakes in the window afterwards! Disappointed.

Even if you do nothing else in Edinburgh, you must try the Haggis, Neeps and Tatties in Whisky Sauce, it is quite possibly the closest thing to a hangover cure in existence. The desserts are scrumptious too and they have a great range of Scottish drinks (my personal favourite being the Thistly Cross Cider).Good service, clean facilities and a pleasant homey atmosphere.

We were looking for a quick light lunch as we had just finished a tour of the castle and wanted to keep sight seeing. I will admit this place caught our eye because of the Trip Advisor sticker out front. This is a very small restaurant with few seats - the place was about 3/4 full. It was just the two of us and we took our seats quickly. After that, we thought the waitress forgot about us. It took a very long time before she came back to take our order and it took even longer for the bowl of soup and bowl of seafood chowder to arrive. Both the soup and chowder were good, but then again, trying to pay for our bill at the end took too long. A bit surprised to find 10% service charge on the bill. Staff could use some training in how to be friendly to customers.

My wife and I had just visited the Castle when we spotted the Taste of Scotland whilst strolling down the Royal Mile. The prices drew us to this restaurant, being slightly cheaper than other restaurants we sawnduting the afternoon. The dearest main course was the steak at £12.95.The starters ranged from £3 - £5 and the desserts were about £5. We decided on the steak which was a 6oz sirloin with chips, onion rings, fresh tomato, mushtooms and a whisky sauce. I had my eye on the chranachan for dessert. The food arrived in reasonable time and was piping hot. The food was gorgeouse and the whisky sauce was to die for. I've read some of the other reports and I can honestly say that the chips were fantastic, even if they maybe frozen. Whilst looking around, the fish seemed quite large and the chowder smelled lovely. The portion size was large enough for myself and my wife not being able to finish it, and desserts were out of the window. Ithought the girls were very friendly and efficient. I can certainly recommend this gem of a restaurant if you are staying in Edinburgh. It might be small and nothing special to look at but it's cozy and serves excellent food. Thank you for a lovely meal. John E

Went for traditional fish and chips, chips were clearly frozen and tasted like oven chips from tesco. No sauces on the table. Service was terrible, barely spoke to us and we were charged a 10% service charge on top of our food. Fish was tasty but the portion was on the smaller size.

The food was good, but certainly not spectacular. It is a good place to stop for an quick lunch and simple meal on the Royal Mile, the service was fine, but fairly ordinary.

The menu on the window appeared authentic and no line-ups like the other pubs in the area so we went in. Just the 2 of us, ordering a light meal. Waitress spent more time flirting with the bartender than with ensuring that our meals were delivered correctly and in a timely fashion. Never again!

We were near this restaurant and decided to drop in. The food was great and we enjoyed our visit. They were not too kind and seemed annoyed when I asked for my bill. They seemed to cater to others and ignored us. Not for sure if it was because we were Americans or what? Eventually a more kind waiter took care of us and we moved on our way.

Had lunch here with my family. We were just passing looked in and thought we would try it for lunch. This was a great discovery the fish and chips were great, service was excellent. The price was ok expected in this part of the town. The service charge of 10% is automatically added to the bill. I did not mind as the service was good, but had it been poor would have asked for it to be removed.Would go back.

Although the restaurant was in a great part of town and pretty clean we were more than disappointed by the not so happy servers. It is a very busy time of year but they spoke unkindly and rushed us. Food was okay but not that good for the price. They took no credit cards and didn't tell anyone that on there entry, they waited till you tried to pay your bill. Although food came quick the drinks for three in our party came halfway through the meal and for one never came at all. Over all I wouldn't bother with this one. You can get better fish and chips cheaper anywhere else.

My wife and I visited Edinburgh to get a taste of the atmosphere of the Edinburgh Fringe and whilst there we went to Taste of Scotland restaurant (cafe??). The food (fish and chips) was ok but the bill for 2 x fish and chips and 2 soft drinks including service charge came to over £28. i realise that this was peak season but feel that Taste of Scotland takes unfair advantage.

The fish and chips that they advertise was OK, nothing special, especially at their prices. Service was mediocre at best with the staff more interested in chatting among themselves in Italian rather than dealing with customers.

I came to Scotland with a list of food to try and they had it all. Right on the Royal Mile this place wasn't busy and looked nice so we stopped in for a sandwich. After we got menus from the waitress we discovered they had hot food as well. In the end I settled for a scotch pie, without the fried egg, and it was wonderful! Wasn't the biggest fan of the beans, but I'm used to a more 'american' kind I suppose. The gravy was interesting, made with whisky, which I enjoyed but my mother didn't. There was a bit of a shuffle when I was there as I think two dinners 'dined-and-dashed' which put our server into a bad mood but she still did her best. Their card machine was also not working causing everyone to pay by cash. Despite the inconveniences the food was very tasty.

Walking up many many steps to Castle Hill on our way to a restaurant that was found to be too expensive. Happened upon a taste of Scotland. Menu looked inviting and so we went in. So happy that we happened upon this fantastic restaurant. The food was delicious, especially the fish and chips and the Scottish pie. And we got to try banoffee pie for the first time! Would definitely recommend to anyone!

We were on our way back to the train station from the Castle and just stopped in here and had one of the most delightful dining experiences of our trip. We were looking for our favorite cider, Strongbow, but found another very interesting one made in Scotland (of course). My husband had the steak, done just the way he likes it and very reasonably priced, though he doesn't like mushrooms so I got his. He also had a decadent looking chocolate cake for dessert. I had a marvelous and unexpected combination plate of a little pork pie, yummy mashed potatoes with gravy, a fried egg, and baked beans. I ate every delicious bit! But what made the experience so special was a serendipitous encounter with the two servers and another patron, all of whom shared our love of language. I hope the waitress with the degree in Greek, Latin, and Sanskrit soon finds a teaching job, but we loved meeting her and the others.

My friends and I ordered steak. Best are the button mushrooms and oven toasted tomatoes - really good. Just right. Mashed potatoes are ok too. Steak tasted good but we ordered medium well and steak served was well done. It could have been perfect if the steak was cooked right for my taste.

The seafood chowder is heavenly. Absolutely fresh, hot & a balanced blend of all taste. The seabass is fresh, perfectly cooked & refreshing garnishing. The restaurant is quite squeezy & busy. The waitresses are doing their best to serve everyone as fast & politely as possible.

It is a small but very cozy restaurant near Edinburgh Castle with excellent food and friendly staff. We ordered fish and chips and seafood chowder, which were both terrific. The service was great and the staff was extremely helpful. So much so that on the way out I forgot my hat on the restaurant seat. The waitress was kind enough to chase me down the street to give it back to me - and I was already 50 metres away from the restaurant!! So, if she ever reads this, I just want to say 'thank you' again for that nice gesture. It was freezing outside and without my hat, my visit to Edinburgh old town would not have been as nice as it was. :)

This restaurant serve tasty, Scottish dishes with good service, and reasonable prices. Just down the road from the castle, this was a good place too stop and grab something quick before going on a whisky tour (that's also just up the road near the castle) The lady serving was very friendly, and the service was quick. My partner had the "haggis, neeps & tatties" with the whisky sauce - he loved it!I was a bit safer and went for chicken burger & chips - which was good.It was lovely in here.

We went when it was quiet so speed of service and food was good. Service charge added to bill which was fine, however waitress presented us with a laminated card asking for another tip in cash (explaining already added service charge was to cover fraud and credit card payments). A real shame they are so greedy: we had a good impression up to this point: we left feeling very affronted and disappointed.

Ate dinner and breakfast here while we were staying in the hotel. Staff are really nice and helpful, the food was good, not fine dining but not expensive so for the price it is above a lot of other places. I wouldn’t normally go into a hotel restaurant if I wasn’t staying but I would go there again if I was in Edinburgh.

My mum took my two kids today- she was in horror and panic when she couldn't find my three year old because he had wondered off with another family- and was only discovered in the main reception of the commonwealth pool. for your children's safety don't use this soft play. Such a disgrace my heart aches at all the horrific endings today could have had- absolute shame on this so called child friendly venue.
