The people here are really friendly, and I had the fish and chips, which were amazing—crispy, and perfectly cooked. Although the queue was long, it’s understandable because it's such a popular chippy. The location is also a highlight, with a lovely sea view that makes the experience even better.

Great spot to visit near the waterfront in Edinburgh. We wanted to supplement our full lunch order with one additional item from the next door and they raised a huge stink and told me we couldn’t eat items from other establishments. While it is understandable to draw a line on outdoor space given its scarcity, the fact that a large order was made them seem a bit petty. In fact, they soured the entire experience despite their food being wonderfully prepared.

I had the opportunity to visit the Fischmarket, and I have to say it was a fantastic experience! 🐟🍟 The fish was incredibly fresh and its flavor was simply breathtaking. The fries were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, just as they should be. The service was fast and friendly, and the environment was welcoming and clean. I can't wait to return to enjoy these delicious dishes again! If you are a fish and chips lover, this is the place for you. Absolutely recommended!

Had high hopes for the best tasting fish supper in the city, but this failed to live up to expectations. Scallops were overcooked, battered fish was dry, curry sauce did not taste like the usual chip shop curry and tartar sauce lacked freshness and dill. Overall, not a bad restaurant, but just not the hype that people make it out to be.

When asked where to get the best fish and chips in Edinburgh, our hotel told us this restaurant. - The journey by tram takes a long time, but we were not disappointed. The fish is really big ("large"), crispy and, above all, not drowned in oil. The pea puree was also delicious and there was nothing to complain about with the fries. You can tell from the location that it was a former market hall or something similar. There are also outdoor spaces with views over the harbor. We were there in December. If you are sensitive to the cold, you should choose your table carefully - the seats near the door are a bit drafty.

The food in this place is really good. Can't fault it, the service however is really bad. We went during oyster happy hour and they took our order at 5:58 and we asked if it would still be OK during the happy and the waitress said it would be. We only found out when we got the bill that they charged the full amount. The waitress said it was because she entered it in their system after the hour ended. Fine. But tell us before giving us the bill? Probably just a bad waitress as she was quite young, but the manager didn't help much either. Proper scam.

I have been to The Fishmarket many times and have never been let down - it is simply the best Chippy in Edinburgh. The food is cooked fresh and the service is friendly and efficient. To be honest, I have never sat in, as I tend to go when it is nice weather so that I can sit closer to the sea - fish always tastes better when you are as close to the sea as possible. I always have the fish - which is always flakey and tasty. But my partner has often had the squid which comes with a wonderful dipping sauce (so much so that my Nephew kept a piece of the squid in his pocket whilst he played on the park so that he could have it later).

The fish & chips was great and the service was also good. The only problem was that the place was boiling hot. Obviously they are frying fish etc so this is going to generate heat but I did notice they had A/C so could have controlled the temperature in the restaurant if they wanted. A shame because we would have spent more time and money but the temperature was way to high to stay.

We called in on spec and were lucky enough to get a table, only just surfing the formation of a queue. Really affable, friendly staff. Attentive without being intrusive, enquiring without pressurising. And now, onto the best bit, the food. We had the monkfish curry. It was, without doubt, one of the most pleasant curries we've ever had. Tasty, spicy without being oppressive and full of fish. Having this with some bread meant we couldn't find room for a dessert. I’ll be honest, the fish and chips were really good, we really enjoyed them and the place is lovely. I don’t believe the hygiene rating for this place is accurate though. The cutlery had hair on it and did not look clean, and the waiter who swapped out cutlery was openly wiping his snot with his bare hands. Seeing that made me really regret having lunch here. It’s such a shame since the food was really good. If that’s going on in front of customers, I can’t imagine the hygiene standards in the kitchen. Would not recommend.

Absolutely cannot fault. Pricey, yes, but worth it. We went for standard fish supper (so, fish with chips), mushy peas and a single portion of haggis bonbons. Everything was steamin' hot, the fish was meaty and a reasonable portion of chips that were perfectly seasoned (few places get the salt:vinegar ratio correctly but he definitely did!) We ate them on the picnic benches outside with lovely, misty/harr-y views over the Firth of Forth. A short walk the tram stop (end of the line at Newhaven) and well worth the travel.

Overpriced, fish not fresh and overall a sense of being taken for a ride. £14 for some squid rings was a complete rip off. There are far better fish and chip shops for locals and tourists to go to at much less cost. Nobody goes for deep fried lobster, monkfish etc and tend to go for haddock or cod and chips - standard chip shop fare so it’s a place built on hype by the internet and has become a con, in my opinion but we have seen this before many times.

I chose this particular place with the hope of trying Scottish lobster (but East Coast lobster was available). The entrance to the restaurant is quite unclear (first you have to choose the right entrance, one for takeaway food, another entrance to the restaurant, you have to press a button to enter). We came about half an hour after opening, the restaurant was full, so we had to wait 10 minutes for a table to become free. We were seated at the bar (but it was for the best as the barista saved the impression of this place both with service and cocktails) . The seafood was not bad, but the fries that came with them were not tasty and dry. It was the first time I spent £60 per person and left the restaurant hungry.

My favourite chippie in Edinburgh without a doubt and certainly my first stop when friends visit. Beautiful harbour location can’t be beat and outdoor seating with heaters and umbrellas for half the section usually means we have somewhere comfy to enjoy the fish and chips. Takeaway: downside is you’ll often find quite a queue and that’s because everything is fresh and made to order. Would like to say the queue moves fast but I’ve definitely ended up waiting an hour in this line before - which can be unbareable on a sunny day as it heats up like a greenhouse. Pity they can’t make the pickup order system work. Staff are usually super busy and straight to the point (I would be too if I had to explain the menu to every tourist tbd) but great people overall. Food is simply amazing with perfect batter. Look no further for a prime fish and chips experience. Restaurant: pros - you don’t have to wait an hour in the greenshouse. Cons: somehow convinced the food doesn’t taste the same if it’s not in a paper box but might be my own biased. But seriously, somehow manage to triple what you end up spending next door with drinks, appetisers and all that getting involved.

The Ship on the Shore is a relaxed, informal seafood restaurant in the Shore area of Leith; it’s on our doorstep, so we can be forgiven for visiting twice in as many weeks. Our second visit was at Hogmanay with a friend and the restaurant was full, with many diners elegantly dressed for the occasion and something of a party atmosphere. Fortunately, we had booked weeks in advance. The food was outstanding - I ordered the special: tarragon butter lobster tail topped with red caviar, vegetables, and a romanesco and champagne porcini sauce. It was so good, I could have licked the last remaining dribbles of sauce off the plate! My partner had the traditional haddock and chips, and our friend chose the monkfish tail in a Thai curry sauce. The service was friendly and attentive, the food delicious, and the prices very reasonable. For anyone visiting Edinburgh, the Shore area in the Port of Leith, is Edinburgh’s ‘foodie’ quarter with many fine restaurants, including fish restaurants: the Ship on the Shore is definitely one of the restaurants that is not to be missed.
