Ondine in Edinburgh, City of

Our visit was neither bad nor great, just okay. Food was fine and we didn’t have to wait too long for it. There were some annoying elements to the evening, we were served bread but it was just one slice cut into 2 pieces. We were asked if we wanted more, this time more than one slice between two was provided but at the end of the meal we’d been charged £4 for the extra bread. I don’t recall seeing that on the menu. Seems a bit tight. We had waiting staff unnecessarily add and remove cutlery several times during our visit which just didn’t need touching. Overall it was an okay experience but not one I’d go back to.

Met up with an old rugby teammate from 39 years ago who was up in Edinburgh with his son, visiting his potential choice of university. He said why don’t we try Ondine. Lovely I thought, I’ve been before. We both had oysters cooked differently. I had the oyster tempura and he had buffalo oysters and his son had the squid tempura with the delicious Vietnamese dipping sauce. We were informed of the lemon sole special, by the hostess and it didn’t disappoint. Tow of us decided that it was a day for steak so we plumped for that, it was delicious one medium rare and the other medium well. Cooked to perfection for us both. Now for deserts. 2 cheese cakes and 1 cheese board to finish with. We were the last in the restaurant with no fuss from the staff just diligently going about their duties. The bill was settled and we disappeared into the Edinburgh night. I found the staff to be very friendly, professional and nothing seamed too much for them. I can/ will and would recommend this restaurant to everyone from a casual visit to takings friends colleagues and guests. 5/5 from us.

Service was very attentive & lovely staff but unfortunately the food was not good at all. Overpriced food & not good quality. £230 for 2 courses with 2 aperols each. The building is all getting renovated too so meaning it’s very dark inside & was very quiet on a Friday lunch. Won’t be returning unfortunately.

We had a very disappointing experience at Ondine.The service was first class but the food experience was third class The scallops were overcooked and the lobster Thermidor was overcooked/bland and missing its claws This was explained as being mixed in with the rest of the lobster which seemed at odds with the miserly portion Overpriced at £195 for two people/two courses Will not be back as Edinburgh has so many other top class restaurants

Friday night in Edinburgh place was rammed, we weren’t massively hungry so went with oysters to start followed by smoked salmon, fish soup and crab on crumpet. Fish soup was average rest yummy

Overall we had a nice evening. The service was good and the food was tasty but we personally felt it was extremely expensive for what it was. We won't be returning.

We went around half 5 when the restaurant was quite quiet and was greeted very quickly and showed to our seats. Our servers were all outstanding, particularly Joe, every other was equally as good but never caught their names. I am a very fussy eater but can safely say that Ondine is the best fish and chips meal I’ve ever had in my life. My partner had the oyster happy hour and lobsters and couldn’t rate them any more than 10/10. 5 out of 5!

The first thing we saw as we entered the restaurant was a member of staff smiling and greeting us warmly. This set the tone for the whole experience at Ondine, where the service was warm and the food was prepared simply and well. The attention to detail was second to none - inedible bits of my lobster removed before being served, pea puree and tartare sauce beautifully made. Oysters wonderful and langoustines fresh. Our server Joe made our evening - a friendly and warm man who looked after us impeccably. Thank you to all for a lovely night. Can’t wait to come back.

Had such a lovely valentine’s day dinner here and it was topped off with amazing service, the name on the recipe said it was Rory that served us but all the staff that served us were so lovely and attentive. Made my night xx

We visited for a birthday dinner on a Friday night. Service was perfect, some lovely wines but we all felt as though the food was a bit of a let down. Under seasoned and lacking any sort of wow, especially for the price. We eat out a lot and very happy to pay for great food but we all felt that Ondine just missed the mark slightly. We will return but won't be rushing back.

Visited Ondine Friday night and what a fantastic experience. We had plenty of wine and some of the best seafood ever! Spending half of our time in Thailand certainly raises the stakes when it comes to seafood, but I have to say this takes some beating in my opinion, the Buffalo Squid was great also. Try it, I will definitely be going back when I’m back in Edinburgh. Thank you all for a great evening.

Another super experience today at Ondine - I’m a regular customer here but it wouldn’t stop me saying if things weren’t of the usual amazing standards. Just love the whole experience and the beautiful food is enhanced by the service shown by Craig, Kerry and Kate. I can’t keep away!!

After nearly 3 years of external work the restaurant is still hidden behind the scaffolding and plastic. Worth finding, however, for elegant cooking and great ingredients. Atmosphere a little lacking due to the subdued natural light but crisp and efficient service with good fish dishes.

Smart environment with great service. The oysters were the best and freshest I've had in the UK - Lindisfarne, truly delicious. The smoked salmon was excellent. My partner enjoyed the potted crab, but the crumb topping didn't work for me - not sure what it was but there was a strong allium flavour, chive oil maybe? The main of lemon sole was cooked really well - we went for both on and off the bone dishes. Sadly, though, both plates were completely lacking in seasoning, which put a bit of a dampener on things. We should have been confident enough to send them back for the kitchen to assess, but didn't. Nice atmosphere, and the wine and whisky list is good too.

I had one of the best lobsters here! We were super lucky to be able to get a slot by walking in. Strongly recommended by a chauffeur, we were very pleased to try the food and loved it! Scallops and lobster was the highlight of our meal!

Ordered seafood platter which was nothing special and not much to it. Consisted of a few mussels, clams and crab claws scattered on ice with one languistine and scallop each! Very disappointed as we paid £140 and were left feeling hungry and asking for extra bread!! Felt a bit like a canteen. Expected better & wouldn’t recommend.

Everything about Ondine was exceptional. Wonderful service, incredible food and lovely atmosphere. The mussels and the goan curry were excellent, beautifully cooked and the chocolate parfait dessert was delicious. Paired well with vinho verde! Would highly recommend. Not cheap but worth it!

Very touristy, overpriced and a little stuffy. Staff was very nice and helpful. Both food and drinks were overpriced. The soup was blended and had no seafood pieces in it. The smoked salmon was delicious and really the star. I had the lobster thermidor and it was ok, salty and came with nothing. I think for the price and portion, something should’ve been offered as a side. I would skip this place on our next visit.

Really nice food, oysters super fresh! As many others have said Ondine is over priced and the food is average at best. This would have been more acceptable if the service and ambience had been exceptional or even good, but sadly, they were not. There are much better places to eat...

The food is excellent, but they massively inflated our bill (~£100) by adding 4 starters for each that we ordered. Also, inflated a sharing platter by 50% despite clearly stating that it would be enough for 3 people if we ordered many sides and starters. They did adjust the bill, but left a sour taste. They never really apologized for the error, but expected us to be grateful we paid for what we actually ate! Our water was refilled once over a 3 hour sitting, even for my friend who was only drinking water. Some wine we’d ordered during the meal arrived along with dessert. We’d been to the restaurant a few years ago and really enjoyed it, but won’t be returning. The table behind us had a similar experience. Maybe it was just understaffed on the night.

Per farvela breve: abbiamo aspettato 50 minuti per l’antipasto, abbiamo voluto prendere il piatto di pesce per due persone da 120£ e la quantità di pesce era troppo poca per quel prezzo… per dolce ho chiesto una pavlova( sono pasticcera) è stato portato un piatto con tre more tagliate un pó di salsa è una meringa con pochissima panna dentro questo per 12£ !!!!! Per fare un piatto del genere il locale ne avrà spesi all’incirca 2£ !!!!!(ovviamente l’ho mandata indietro) abbiamo speso quasi 300€ per una cena che non ne valeva 200€….. RAGAZZI ANDATE A MANGIARE DA UN ALTRA PARTE.

Well, went there last night, first night in Scotland in 39 years. Sat at the bar, for 15 minutes, the bartender and waitstaff walked by us multiple times , never acknowledged we were even there. We got up and left.

We didn’t have a reservation but we were lucky to get a table. The service as well as their attention to my gluten intolerance was great!! Thank you.

Obviously, the food served is good, the fish and seafood well cooked so the food in itself is really fine, but terribly overpriced for what it is compared to other fine fish restaurants. For example, fish is sold for £40-50 without sides. We're willing to pay rather high prices for fine restaurants but here we felt it was not good value for money. We were nicely welcomed and the service was irreproachable but we were a little put out when we left and no one answered (but clearly noticed us) when we said goodbye.

The food is great I can say that much. The atmosphere is buzzing so that’s great. The food arrives at the right time however it’s very pricey. I knew it was high end but £8 for an additional plate of bread is extortionate. However two things happened towards the end of the meal which spoiled it for me. First was the squabbling over the service charge which wasn’t included in the bill when it arrived but for me I was going to tip anyway. The staff then swiped the bill from the table before I looked at it to replace it with another bill with it included. I already seen it so being sneaky wasn’t needed. Furthermore having spent £350 as it was my wives 50th birthday she didn’t even get a complimentary glass of wine or a small dessert. The ending made me think they are a bit tight as a company. I gave it 4 stars because of this when I would have given 5 as the food is first class but didn’t want to give less incase it was an off night

Good fish - totally in two we had a portion of oysters, a portion of scallops and a portion of musles, an ice cream and a pavlova plus water, 1 coke, 1 cider - but very high prices in relation to the quantity / quality (146 pounds). However, generally speaking, in UK restaurants are more expensive than in the rest of Europe. About 1/3 higher, ceteris paribus. Kind and professional staff. I would go back to try the fixed price menu. It seems advantageous over the à la carte menu

Food is fine. Same for service and ambiance. It is appreciable. On the other it is just the minimum for the price charged to the guests. Clearly overpriced, we expect far more for such a bill.

Service was very slow and inconsistent: it took them 1 1/2 hours to bring out our entrees though we had arrived when the restaurant was half empty. Food; oysters and crab were good, lemon sole was overcooked and the expensive steak was so tough I left haf of it-- but neither the server nor the manager seemed to notice. No time for the desserts we had been looking forward to. We will not return
