Portobello Beach Bistro in Edinburgh, City of

Two waiters were extremely rude. Anytime we’d ask them something they’d roll their eyes right in front of us. When we asked for a second cup for the tea, one of them refused to serve us saying that one pot is one cup even though we didn’t ask for extra hot water. We didn’t even have a chance to say anything as they genuinely looked like they’re done serving people. I get that hospitality is one of the most difficult areas, but if you made a choice to work there, please make damn sure you’re at least fake nice.

Hopeless moody girl as our sever, she couldn't give a toss about us. Absolutely the worst plate of soup I have ever tasted, in fact you could not call it soup. very disappointed with this place. Cost j£13.00 for two plates of dishwater.Roberry!!!!

The two girl waitress clearly know nothing about basic rules of human communication. When we walked in, they rolled their eyes right away and refused to serve us just because we asked for a second cup for the tea to share.

Sadly i have nothing positive to say about this cafe. Walked in here to avold the cool wind hoping that the ambience on first going in would get better but no, the girl who served us was utterly miserable and just grunted, I understand that we all have bad days but a communication of a hello or something would be good. We ordered soup with artisan sourdough bread. We got a bowl of tasteless broth, no consistency dishwater with no seasonings whatsoever and 2 slices of half toasted bread from a normal loaf. One flat glass of rola cola and one super weak green tea. When the girl took the full plate of " soup" away i just said the truth. There was no flavour or consistency and it was the wrong bread to which she shrugged and walked away and all this for the sum of £19.70. Such a shame but I don't think they think they need to bother as people go in because of the view. I only wish I had read some other reviews before I went in. Save your money and go to one of the other lovely cafes on the prom of which there are many.

Mediocre at best. Been in here a few times over the years always with the hope that the food will have improved but alas. It's overpriced and unimaginative. This place seems to be riding purely on its location, it's certainly not on the friendliness of the staff who always seem like they'd rather be elsewhere. Much better options further along the prom.

My mum insists you can tell the quality of a place by the cleanliness of its toilets. This place has very clean toilets. And nice food too.

Been there today with some friends and because we already had lunch somewhere else, we were looking only for a warm place to sit and have a coffee. Been welcomed by someone who you could clearly see she couldn't be bothered working and could barely speak english - as non native British I do understand the struggle, but then hospitality is not the right job for someone who can barely have a conversation with customers. We sat down and ordered a flat white and 2 cappuccinos. I didn't want to be the Karen so I never complaint to them but I had a sip of coffee and tasted like Dish soap. I didn't drink it. But still paid £4.20 for such a disgusting coffee. Left really disappointed and quite annoied for paying something tasting so bad!!! None of us managed to drink the coffee. Food might be good, I don't know as I didn't have any but cakes on display looked awful and coffee was the worse thing I ever had! If you are looking for a coffee, DO NOT COME HERE!!!

Had breakfast. It was freshly cooked to order!! Really tasty, can't fault the food or service. Will definitely eat there again.

Booked a table for 2 here for my daughter’s birthday treat. Cajun chicken and chips ( large and tasty) followed by chocolate cake with ice cream and iced coffee. Food was excellent and very filling. Loved the large chunky chips. Place is a hidden gem.

Nice seaside with almost unlimited views

A cute little restaurant right on the promenade. You have a very good view of the sea. The food was very tasty and the portion was generous. The staff was also very friendly.

Its a beautiful place, calm and peaceful. Serving is great, food delicious. If you sit outside you are literally few steps from the beach. Everything here is just perfect! Higly recommend trip to Portobello and visit this small piece of paradise :-)

The behaviour of the man at the till was disgusting. Very mean and very rude. No wonder the cafe was empty. Please learn some customer service. Very disappointing. I obliged to give 1 star because 0 star wasn’t available. Also the ice cream was probably expired, my sister had diarrhoea after having that.

The man at the till was extremely rude and was on his phone all the time. Had to call him 5-6 times to get his attention.

We had a very tasty vegetarian breakfast. Service was good. This place is at the end of the promenade so less busy.

This was a lovely place to relax after a walk along the promenade which was extremely busy aswas the beach but with a bit of a walk got to less busy areas and the Bistro was surprisingly quiet. It was a beautiful sunny day. I just had a pint of Stella Artois which was rather pricey but understandable. But £6.50 is almost London prices and more inkeeping with city centre prices. None the less it was a very pleasant visit. I will definitely call in again next time I'm in the area.

The place is nice and the staff too. But my breakfast wasn't worth it. I would have liked a whole tomato, two sausages and a bit of toast added for the price I paid. Even if it was all organic it would still not be more than 10 pounds for the amount of food. I don't mind that there are limited options for vegans but at least make it worth the money for us. Hopefully in the future they will adjust it a bit.

Mi esposa y yo vinimos a tomar un trago y un aperitivo. Pedimos dos botellas de cerveza y una porción de patatas fritas. La camarera tomó el pedido y preguntó si queríamos ketchup o vinagre. Dijimos que sí y veamos poner la mesa en consecuencia. Las cervezas se proporcionaron rápidamente, pero no había señales de las patatas fritas. Después de 30 minutos decidí pedir la factura y expresé mi decepción por no recibir las fichas. La persona que estaba en la caja tomó el pago de la cerveza y preguntó al otro personal que tomó el pedido original. La camarera admitió que era ella, le dijeron que no había hecho el pedido a través del sistema y ella dijo “mi culpa” y se fue. No recibimos una disculpa o explicación, simplemente continuaron como si este terrible servicio fuera normal. No te dejes atraer por la ubicación, este es un café de mala calidad que pretende ser un bistró.

Not a good person works here. I asked him for a glass of ice. He refused. My friend turned her leg. I told him, ok, at least give him an ice pack. No, he didn’t. This place has no stars. There are many other cafes nearby and the people there are helpful

Very poor service Chip reheated several times Very expensive milkshake not worth it. Asked if they had ice cream in the milkshakes they said yes then when it appeared. No ice cream

Excelente ubicación en el baile de graduación de Portobello, el personal era lo suficientemente amable y una buena opción en el menú. Sin embargo, la comida era bastante promedio, y muy caro para lo que es. Una hamburguesa con patatas fritas bastante promedio sin ensalada lateral era de £ 15. 00 , que es lo que se podría esperar pagar en algunos lugares gourmet. No vale la pena el dinero.

Lieblose abfertigung, Service geht anders. Die angestellten wirkten alles andere als glücklich. Das Essen schmeckte als ob das öl der friteusse schon tagelang das gleiche war. Hatten dannach beide einen komischen Magen. Nicht zu empfehlen

The fish and chips were deep fried with old oil. For that it was way too pricey. The service was mediocre. It's almost at the beach, so that gave some atmosphere.

A nice bistro right at the northern end of Portobello beach. Due to the non-central location, it was much quieter there, which we found very good. The authorities were all very friendly, quick and attentive. If possible, space is also created for larger groups without making the other guests suffer. We had a lovely time there.

Sadly stumbled upon this place at the end of our trip so only managed to visit once for drinks and cake. Lovely cafe / restaurant inside and a nice location overlooking the sea. We only had teas, coffees, wine and cakes so can't comment on the food but the menu did look lovely so we were disappointed we wouldn't get to eat here. The drinks were good, the cakes were delicious and the service was excellent.

Great place. I can imagine it gets very busy on sunny days. Friendly staff and convenient if you are on the beach. No complaints 👌.

Quite rude staff. I was running a marathon and was really desperate to go to the bathroom so I went in and ask politely and (almost) beggingly if I can use the bathroom real quick. A female staff said I can but then I was stopped halfwayby a male staff who shooed me away. I asked again politely explaining the situation but he refused to talk to me and just 'kicked me out'.

Excellent place to eat. I had the seafood pasta, best I've had, great views, busy place when the sun is out was there on 18 May

Fantastic fish and chips, fast service and a beautiful restaurant, definitely would recommend if you want a good meal by the sea.

Terrible service staff especially Indian guy was really rude. AVOID AT ALL COST too expensive definitely not worth it. Beer was flat and food was disgusting

Open very early. Sea views. Dog friendly. The owner always has a friendly attitude. Takeaway coffee counter (& ice-cream) that opens onto the promenade. Child meals are high quality: kids chicken nuggets of whole breast chunks, lightly battered & freshly made. Sunny outdoor seating in direct sunlight available in late afternoon & early evening. Serves evening meals & drinks.

Staff extremely friendly and polite, food was delicious had the soup and panini and coffee's enjoyed the view of the beach nice and quiet end of Portobello highly recommend will definitely go back

First impressions, a very lovely bistro. Service was quick and very polite. The food was delicious, I had the fish and chips. It was cooked perfectly with lovely bubbly batter. The desserts were lovely. Good selection of beer and lots of other drinks. Highly recommend

Incredible food. Came with my partner and our dog to have lunch and a catch up with an old friend. Staff were very friendly and accommodating to us. Got ice cream before we left.

This cafe is gorgeous, right by the beach with a beautiful view. The staff are great and never fail to make you smile!! The food is amazing with many choices. Must try!!!

Great things come in small packages! Had the loveliest time chatting with the owner about his story and how wonderful Edinburgh is! Amazing service, great options, clean and the cutest cafe in the area!

On a quiet early evening we went to the Bistro having read good things about the fish and chips and they didn't disappoint. A good piece of fish with crunchy batter with doorstep chips, peas and a chunky tartar sauce

Absolutely shocking service didn’t understand what we were ordering had to ask for a latte and the bill twice and got our order wrong . The full portobello breakfast was disgusting 🤢 one sausage which smelt off, under cooked tomato a spars slice of haggis and black pudding and one piece of cheap fatty bacon ,On the waffles we ordered with bananas and it’s came with blueberries . When we arrived the table was sticky and when they wiped it down it stayed sticky . A-swell as all that when we were eating they would linger around us eating . And all of this came to an extortionist price. Would not recommend at all had been the worst breakfast I have ever had , don’t waste ur money there !!

Very stale pastry and cardboard flavoured coffee

Visited here for breakfast , not been here in months and it remains the same . Very unwelcoming atmosphere and staff ! There is a very strange vibe between staff overpriced basic food and the cakes were stale. Owner does not seem to care about poor feedback .

Just be aware if you visit this place-could be good for a drink or quick refreshment but you have to face Sticky tables, poor quality of food for a really high price. Awfully waste if money.

Great place to stop for tea and a scone or cake in the afternoon. Service was excellent, food was good, and the location by the beach was unbeatable.

Every Saturday with dad Jimmy and my sister Maureen and Elvis the dog. I am Liz. I myself live in Portobello and have been for lunch. My birthday with my friends who surprised me. The restaurant gave me a lovely cheese cake and three spoons so we could all share. Lovely touch. I will be there each Saturday for breakfast. Jimmy dad going on Caribbean Cruise so it will just be myself Maureen and Elvis the dog. Recommend 10 stars. Thanks. Liz x
