Taste of Bengal in Havering

Not happy as on 2 occasions they have messed our foods up n I’ve had a burning tongue lips cheeks etc . Surely they know who’s is who .. someone isn’t paying attention.. last time I will be going there

We have been eating here usually twice a month for over thirty years. I can say hand on heart that we have never had a meal that wasn't to the highest standard. Jamal, the owner, runs a tight ship, and perfection is guaranteed every time. We visit lots of local Indian restaurants with friends, but we always come back here. Perfect traditional Bangladeshi/ Indian food at reasonable prices.

Very disappointing. Rude staff and food not satisfactory. The bombay potatoes were very spicy and we tried to tell staff and they just ignored us.

I visited this restaurant with some friends recently after not visiting for a number of years. I ordered a vegetable madras with pilau rice. It wasn't so much that the food was bad, it just wasn't overly nice. There was too much coriander in the curry though. With Mustard being next door and Tandoori Lounge just opposite, this place just doesn't compare unfortunately - the other two are far nice restaurants both in the decor and the food quality. The person who took our order really seemed like he didn't want to be at work too. The staff at Tandoori Lounge and Mustard are all very friendly, so it was a shame not to experience the same thing here. I may be being a little harsh, but that is probably because it is so near to the other two - perhaps if it was in an area where there were no other Indian restaurants, I would have looked upon this one a little more favourably.

Best Indian restaurant in the world, amazing food and service! We moved and cant replace this restaurant but we will be back!

Been coming here since the early eighties.Always a warm welcome from Jamal and his team.Food very good quality and reasonable.Any independant restuarant that can survive this long must be doing something right!Dont take my word for it try it for youself.

Went there for Indian with my wife. We ordered 7 dishes between us and they gave us 5 of the wrong dishes. The seats are stained with food and disgusting. Toilets filthy and the service from the staff is appalling. They tried to intimidate us and say they was going to call the police for complaining about the food. When I threatened to call then police and health and trading standards they changed there mind.

Hadnt been here for a few years but went there late may and can say it was,as good as i remember from the food to the great service from owner jamal and team.No fancy stuff on here like all these so called fashionable places around the area,just good old tried and trusted dishes perfectly executed,like they say it if aint broke dont fix it! I have been going to this restaurant since about 1998, in all that time it has never changed one bit and it retains all the things that I love about "going out for an Indian" right down to the tinny Indian music! Jamal keeps this place running like a Swiss watch, it is always clean, warm and welcoming and the food is truly wonderful! I moved away from the area in 2015 and the thing I miss most about living there is this restaurant and that goes for my whole family too! My favourite dish is Madras from the Bengal and I have not found anywhere that can match it. All the food is cooked with fresh ingredients and to your preference. When you get to know Jamal he often very kindly gives his regulars a free drink which I have not found to happen anywhere else. Jamal is a family man and loves talking about his family and is always interested in what is happening in your life. All my kids have grown up going to The Taste of Bengal and love going there and so do I! This restaurant is a wonderful place to go and enjoy life and great food!

Our friends suggested this restaurant for a get together dinner and we were not disappointed. The service was exemplary with very friendly and attentive waiting staff. The food was well cooked and very tasty with minimal waiting time. We would definitely recommend and will be visiting again soon.

Haven’t been here for ages but I will be back again soon. The service was good and the staff were friendly. The food was tasty and it was a good price.

Been going to this restaurant for a good 27 years! Says it all really! Great guys there all frendly and welcoming!,jamel the proprioter is ok but can be a bit aloof when under pressure! Food always nice!,good old fashoned restaurant with a carpet on the floor!

Been coming here for over 20 years but been noticing being overcharged a few pounds on each visit!,jamals not the freindliest of people but the way he goes off at the waiters in front of custermers is not nice as all the guys there are a lovely bunch! Hes getting worse never seems happy never smiles!,will go back but only now and then !,he s lucky to have them

me and my life partner Jerry Adams popped in on a whim and i found the food ok but not a explosion of flavours that Jerry adores. The poppadoms were possible the best thing I indulged in chicken tikka was ok jerrys vindaloo didn't hit the spot not hot at all and the staff are bloody annoying u sit down and they ask u if ur ready to order say no then 30 seconds later they are back like vultures round a dead buffalo I'm not saying it was rubbish but very mediocre.

Decided to go with family to Taste of Bengal last Sunday evening 24th Feb. Curries were good ie chicken curry, jalfrezi and tikka masala. Good fun evening.

Warm and welcoming with a traditional decor, on a cold winter night but unfortunately the food was average.

Went to this restaurant with my friends on recommendation ordered my food they came over didn't put the rice down chucked it on my plate when I was sharing sorry but I like too put my food on my plate myself. Also because I had a few drinks they overpriced our dinner when I went home I worked it out to be £30 over the original price won't be going back.

I have been going here with my family off and on for thirty years, other Indian restaurants have come and gone, the owner Jamal has been there as owner as long as we have been going. You can always guarantee a welcome, the food is always good, the staff are friendly and helpful. Jamal has always kept to the traditional Indian way of cooking and a more honest man you will never meet. We have never had a bad meal or bad experience there yet in over thirty years. Jamal runs a tight ship and is always on hand to make your experience a good one. Reliability is his game, never disappoints, sometimes a piece of nostalgic crockery will turn up on your table which makes us laugh, last night an old style quiche lorraine dish used as a tray for the lime pickle etc, fantastic. Surroundings are comfortable and spotless, prices more than reasonable. And yes he still plays the old traditional Indian music, just as it should be.

Went there about 10pm it was full of drunk people who could not put a sentence together without swearing. Not really a family environment and not a quiet place for dinner. We had starters which were not nice, after this we asked for the bill as it was too rowdy. We will not be returning.

No booking but seated and ordered within a reasonable time. Food lovely, service and drinks all good 👌🏻

I went there with few friends despite the reviews being bad, the food was ok but when we asked for the bill it was overcharged by £13, we queried it and they wasn’t happy, I was told by someone not to go there because of this, I ignored it but when it happened to me I was shocked. If you do go there please check your bill before paying

I have visited this restaurant on and off for over 30 years however last nights visit left me totally amazed. The food was average nothing special, when we were presented with the bill it had a third round of drinks on it (we only had 2 rounds). The empty glasses were still on table at this point, we queried it and after an argument with the short man in there with a beard he was insisting that he had removed glasses from our table which was a lie. The bill was then adjusted, we made payment in cash and was expecting £5.05 change, the change came back at £4.05, when confronting the same waiter he did not even look at the change on plate and pulled a £1 coin from his pocket and dropped it on plate and walked off out to the kitchen. I will definitely not be visiting again and would urge you all to carefully check your bills.

This is a restaurant i use to visit as I child, went the other with family, nice and cosy. Would recommend, prices are very reasonable, nice and friendly.

Visited this place on a week night after previously eating here of a lunch time some years ago. The sauce was over oily bordering on watery and the chicken from our Madras was chewy like it had been overcooked for hours. The place itself is very 1970s and could do with a refurb but the staff were friendly and the service was good. Unfortunately I wouldnt return to this place where years ago you could get a good curry.

this place only survives due to the fact it's the only place open late late to eat... but I'd never advise any one that's not already had a drink and prepared to just eat anything to ever have a sensible meal here. Other then the massive rat problem the place is filthy food is discusting and it's over priced. Do not try this Indian.

Lamb was a bit tough,but when you've had a skinful and need grub till 4am you can't whack it. Staff also very quick to distribute Cobra 🍺

En el 27 mi familia regresar a casa de vacaciones, así que todos estamos de acuerdo en que un buen ol cena india.

Este es mi favorito y curry house fiancés come aquí una vez a la semana con sus amigos. Después de unas copas en el Firkin decidimos comer aquí. Teníamos 2 y 4 cebolla bhajis poppadoms para entradas y para los principales, teníamos pollo dhansak pollo con arroz pilau shaslik y hongos y 1 de arroz con manteca chappati. Para mí el dhansak no fue suficiente aunque el pollo picante era encantadora y tierna. Compartimos una botella de calle. Emillion. También compartimos un profiterol helado para el postre. La cuenta fue de £42, que es una fantástica relación calidad-precio.

De nuevo otra visita, esta vez con mi prometido. Shashlick de pollo y pollo dansak. Ambos muy sabroso con arroz de setas, todo ello regado con una botella de calle emillion.

- Llevar muy agradable, rápido y fácil el servicio, la comida tan sabroso como normal un solo punto - necesidad de garantizar que los platos no son muy aceitosas. Aparte de eso, muy bueno. Como siempre muy atento personal y acogedor.

This place is always good.Chicken dansak and a chicken polak, very good meals. My only thing is that the sag paneer was quite thick and pastey.Depends what chef is on.

Went lunch time 10th October ( Sunday )Lovely clean restaurant. Very nice welcoming manager who was very professional.I had Chicken Shaslick ( clay oven cooked ) my husband had Tandoori King prawns- all cooked great, well spiced as were our popodoms, rice and bread.They even made our daughter a nice Vegan take-away which she enjoyed.5 worthy stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️We will return soon !!!!!

We went mid week at around 9pm and it was great until 14 drunk and very loud men came in. The staff were excellent however and our food was delivered as ordered and on very hot plates. I had chicken and spinach main course which was nice. The mushroom bhaji and vegetable naan I wouldn't have again, the bhaji wasn't as nice as I've had elsewhere and the naan was very oily. Others in our party had the mixed starter plus another / side dish; next time I will have that instead of a main course. Give the place a go. If you choose well you'll enjoy your food. I'd be happy to go back.

A Monday evening visit for a birthday curry and as expected a quiet night in the restaurant. Service was good, the food likewise. There was nothing outstanding but nothing much to complain about. All I will say is that dishes that you expected to have a bit of a kick such as a Madras or my Dhansak didn't deliver. Would I go back, yes, but I would probably try a few others for choice.

I am never disappointed when I visit this restaurant. It is definitely my favourite Indian restaurant in Hornchurch. The staff are friendly and welcoming.The food is always fantastic and reasonably priced.

I've tried all the curry houses in Hornchurch and this one is the best by far ... It's a traditional curry house and the prices very reasonable. The food is the whole reason I go there !! It's not the hottest curry around but it's the tastiest !! Don't expect a free drink at the end like its competitors but the food is excellent ...

In all the years, probably around 25,I have been using this curry house I have never had a bad meal. Staff are friendly and attentive and food is good. Not the poshest place in town but comfortable and reasonably priced.

After a Saturday afternoon of drinks in Hornchurch, 12 of us arrived at the Taste of Bengal restaurant on the spur of the moment early evening. Although we didn’t have a booking they managed to get us all seated on one long table. We all chose a variety of starters and main dishes plus side dishes and of course a few Cobra beers to wash it all down with. The food was very good both tasty and plentiful, I didn’t hear of any complaints from anyone. Service was also very good, we didn’t have to wait very long for our dishes to arrive. Prices were very reasonable too.A pleasant experience, I would certainly use again.

Visited this restaurant on a Friday night, staff was very pleasant but as the restaurant was busy we had people sitting at our table who we didn't know what ended in a full scale punch up due to clash of personalities and everyone in this restaurant being extremely drunk.Food was below average, I had a simple Chicken Curry which was very bland with Mushroom rice that arrived lukewarm and Naan bread. A bigger disappointment was my food arrived 5 minutes after my friends. This was totally unacceptable.When the bill came we had been overcharged by £30 we pointed this out to the staff who then returned with a bill with £12 added to it. Then the 3rd time it arrived with £15 overcharged. After sitting there with a calculator we then agreed on the correct price.Listening to people who were also in the restaurant this seems to be a regular fiddle they try.AVOID!!!!!!

I often go to the Taste of Bengal after an evening in the pub with my friends. We are always impressed with the service & friendliness of the staff and always enjoy ourselves here. The food is good and portions generous - do not hesitate to give it a try!

Value fior money, good food and attentive staff. Never had a bad meal in over 30 years of visiting. Give it a try I am sure you won,t be disappointded.

i've been going here for many years and most months and the last meal was not up to scratch. Unless my friends insist I won't hurry back! Shame as the service, hospitality and food has always been better. There seems to be restaurants nearby that have gone up a grade that are better.

This restaurant was great,from the food to the staff and service!!!! The flavours of all the dishes were perfect and the naan breads were so tasty!! Service was prompt and efficient and so attentive.I cant fault anything,even the price was more than reasonable!!! If you fancy an indian meal,this is the place to go!!!!!

Went to the Bengal with the missus late after a dance at Oliver's. Great little restaurant with lively atmosphere. The place has been there for years so must be doing something right. Food is nice and cheap and open till late! What more do you want.

Maybe they were having a bad day but I went late after a night out with friends. only had boiled rice and chicken tika that suppose to come with salad well don't think they wanted to give me as checked I wanted salad which I said yes to. well when it came it was so so small. also to top it off we had poppadoms for starters which the waiter poorer all the sauce down my mates fur jacket. They were aware but think they do a great trade, good it's open so late but they do seem to take advantage thinking everyone's drunk.

We've been coming here for over 30 years and love it. Jamal even remembered the names of our children, who moved 10 years ago! The prawn butterfly was beautifully presented and so tasty. The madras and jalfrezi were delicious. Can't keep away!!

Visited Hornchurch and fancied an Indian and so went here assuming that as it was still trading all these years later, it must be good. Turned out to be a correct assumption. Food very tasty, the boss still friendly and it remains good value. There is no fancy decor, just great food at a great price in a friendly environment.

Been going to taste of Bengal hornchurch for years now same owner, tried many other Indian restaurants but keep going back. They must be doing something right.

As in other review I have tried many other Indian restaurants in Hornchurch but I always come back to Jamal and the Taste of Bengal. Jamal always remembers my name even if it is a month or so between visits and the food is always exceptional. We are going again this coming Friday. keep up the good work Jamal and all the staff.

This little indian restaurant has been around since I was a little girl. Always loved coming here, I was upset to read a recent review, which stated the place is terrible, this is not true and you will find majority of people who are writing reviews about this restaurant feel as I do that it's a little gem. The management never rush on weekends, they are always busy late on weekends. Prices have always been very reasonable and should I dare to say very cheap compared to other indians around. Hope they are here for many years to come.

I regularly go here and have been for approximately 14 years. Food is always of a consistently high standard. There are a number of Indian restaurants in hornchurch but this one remains one of the best in my view and lots of other people.

Visited this Saturday just gone with a group of friends, visited earlier in the year and again we weren't disappointed, staff were attentive and I though the food tasted very nice, we all got what we ordered and didn't have to wait too long for our food to arrive, a good atmosphere as well, will go there again when in Hornchurch

This restaurant has been in Hornchurch for many years and has always served its customers well. The food is very good and the service and respect they give all there customers is excellent. We have tried all of the curry restaurants in Hornchurch and this one serves the best food.

Went to this Indian for the first time a week ago and will be going back for sure. The service is good and the food is amazing. There are some good Indian restaurants in Hornchurch but this is the best by far. Give the chicken tikka jalfrezi a try, you wont regret it.

Usually used by me and my mates after out for a few beers in Hornchurch and always get excellent service & lovely meals.I have also been with family and have never been let down as yet - must recomend their chicken madras - very nice

Just had another very good meal at the Taste of Bengal, Always good service and food. Nothing but good everytime I have been.

The staff here are alway helpful and happy. This is our local indian me and my boyfriend have been eating here for over 3 years. They open late and are always having people eat. The food is cooked quickly but taste amazing the value for money is great too.

Depends what you want but this place is not pretentious or posey but serves an extensive menu efficently and quickly. Great to take my Australian kids to a far more authentic experience than Aussie curry houses and at half the price.

This is definately your typical ' I've had six pints and I've got the munchies' type of Indian. Food is what you'd expect, probably over seasoned and full of -er- additives. I had a chicken masalla- balti- jalfrezi...a bit of everything, and it wasn't bad. Good value and service

Only visited ToB because Dream curry,just up the road, was disappointingly closed .Unlike years back,when this place would have been packed to the gunwales,it was only reasonably busy & we had no problem getting a table.Apart from the owner,who is always friendly,the staff were an unhappy bunch of the "I wish I wasn't here " variety.Our meals were delivered very rapidly,no waiting about here.Sadly the food was a shadow of it's former self.Both our main meals were so sweet as to be almost sickening,perhaps they're sponsored by Tate & Lyle?Also the Chana Masala was served covered in a pink sauce,in the style if Chicken Tikka Massala & was also very sweet.As others have mentioned the ToB does seem to be a little less expensive than the numerous other Hornchurch Indians,& if this is your main concern then perhaps this is the place for you.If, on the other hand, you are looking for quality Indian food then I suggest you look elsewhere,unless you have a very sweet tooth.

good food good price very popular we had a pleasant evening the servive was very good not noisy like most of the places in hornchurch. mixture of young and old, worked out at seventeen poundsn a head with drinks and1 desert.will go again

This indian is ok, but not my favourite in Hornchurch. It gets quite busy on a friday and saturday night.
