Taste of Bengal in Wigan

We ate here with friends last night, for the first time in about 11 years. Must say the food was indeed very good and we had a great evening for sure. The mixed Tawa was excellent, as were the mixed starters too. Well done to Ali, Horque and the team, see you again soon.

We have been going here for 20 years. Not every week but on and off. The meal tonight was really disappointing. The guy on the phone was abrupt, telling us that he wasn’t going to write side dishes down first in a curt manner. Does that really matter??? The saag paneer was awful, tomatoey, spicy and hardly any spinach in it. The naan bread was hard and burnt around the edges, the korma had 6 king prawns in and was sloppy and tasteless. Won’t be going again which is a shame.

We have been to this restaurant now several times and my parents have been a couple of times and honestly I could not fault this place once. The staff are impeccable. Inam and Hawk especially, they could not do enough. From start to finish every time in interacting and recommending dishes and being attentive with ordering food and just general conversation honestly each visit has just been impecable. The food is incredible, the starters we have had are the lamb chops, chicken wings, fish and chicken pakora and different bhuna, tikka, biriyana dishes and all have been excellent. I have a nut allergy so have to be especially careful and they have a section in the back of the menu with a key that indicates every allergy which is really good. We can’t wait to go back again. Ordered a takeaway at 6pm to arrive at 7pm. Phoned the restaurant at 7.20pm to find out where the order was, they said they were very busy and it would be another 15-20mins. 40 mins later, still no food. A whole 2 hours since the order was placed, no food. Don’t bothered ordering a takeaway to be delivered!

Some of the best south Asian food I've ever eaten! You can tell it was cooked with love. And really pleasant service with a personal touch without being over bearing. I couldn't recommend this place enough.

Ate here on Saturday and took the waitors reccomendation for a dish, it was fantastic - many thanks !

Wow another fantastic meal, eaten in many times and had takeaways. Food consistently good over many visits. Service is superb and always friendly and welcoming. So lucky to have such a fantastic Indian restaurant on our doorstep. Can't recommend highly enough, we will certainly be returning again

Had a meal few days before. Went back last night worst meal ever. Tasted like cat food. Got meal wrong. And was told to go and and sit in corner.. naughty step? Take your custom else where. Don't waste your money

We normally rave about the food from here but not this time. Last night we had a takeaway and four of us had tandoori chicken tikka as mains. Unfortunately, some of the chicken pieces were tough. This isn’t the first time it happened and it does make me wonder how it is cooked. Also the onions were undercooked. Other than that, everything else was good.

We've been coming here for what must be 20+ years. The food and service are always fantastic, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone.

First time ordering from Ajmeer Manzil. Ordered online. Easy to order and food arrived earlier than suggested which was great. The chap who delivered the food (who obviously worked there) was smartly dressed, incredibly friendly and extremely polite. Fantastic customer service and full of manners which is rare to see these days. The food its self was incredible. Ordered the chicken Tikka balti and was cooked to perfection and piping hot. Chicken was succulent and overall the dish was so flavourful. Deffo ordering again!! Great food and customer service wins every time!

Been coming here forever , fantastic range of quality dishes , often tweeked to suit my Veggie wife . Nothing too much trouble , we have our staff Christmas here . My Brother-in -Law eats here most days .

Cant reccomend this little restaurant/takeawy enough. Whether you eat or or takeaway food is always 100%. Always so fresh and of the highest quality. Pfices are reasonable and staff are lovely too. Always a warm welcome

The best Indian we’ve sampled in our area. Service and food excellent. Would definitely recommend if your nearby or passing through Standish. Couldn’t fault it and will be returning soon.

Table booked for 6pm and quite a few tables already taken, this slowed our order being taken but the food and the rest of the service more than made up for this. Food was hot, fresh and tasty. We all enjoyed the food and the atmosphere and service was very friendly

We had takeaway one Saturday night. Put in order and 30 mins later went to collect. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the food was. We had poppadum's and the usually dips all very good Starters and my chicken jalfrezi was excellent. The chicken was freshly cooked and I usually rate Indian Restaurants on how well they do their Peshwari nans which didn't disappoint. Will definitely order again and perhaps when Covid rules have relaxed we will book a table and eat in.

Yummy takeaway food and lovely staff - what more can you want :) Extremely reliable and punctual service regarding takeaway too plus massive portions ! Our favourite!

Obviously, we can't visit the restaurant at the moment but the take away service is superb. We had three appetisers, three starters and three main courses and every one was perfect. Free local, friendly delivery, really well cooked food. The perfect treat when you can't eat out. Can't recommend this place enough.

I went here on the 9th oct with my wife and my 4 and 5 year old. Was abit nervous with the kids being at the table and not able to get up because of social distancing. The staff very friendly the food was delish. The staff gave us the WiFi code for childrens tablet.

Ate here recently during the Eat out to Help scheme and pleasantly surprised at the quality of food and service. So much so that we returned and whilst the restaurant was quieter the food and service was just as good - a great deal @ £12 ish for 3 courses I think Sunday to Thursday but even so worth a weekend visit because the food is so good !!!!

We have eaten here for many years and it has always been excellent. Unfortunately, yesterday, this was not the case. It’s a lovely small restaurant and service cannot be faulted. However, we could not say the same about the food last night. Whilst the quality was high, the meals which were supposed to be medium strength were all far too spicy hot. So much so that we couldn’t taste it. We had to ask for yoghurt and cucumber to cool our mouths. Even the chicken chat was hot. We did report the issue to the waiter who said he would discuss it with chef later. We dined under the Eat out to Help out scheme, so didn’t make too much fuss but it’s made us wary of eating there again. We didn’t want mild dishes but we don’t want a repeat of this. Maybe the fresh chillies they use were different from usual ones and were a particularly hot variety?

For a 4 course meal it only cost £13, the Danzak curry is the best curry I ever had, they also do a lovely masala, the starters are very tasty too.

I've been eating here for years. Since the revamp last year and new menu, I have noticed the food has gone from good to great.

Having eaten at the restaurant before Covud-19 showed up. One's taste buds required a re-introduction. A quick search showed AM to be open and delivering! Food was chosen, a quick phone call, order taken. Arrived a little late, contactless delivery. Food was hot, very tasty, matter of fact, down right beautiful. What a lovely little Indian in Standish! Came with friends for a long overdue catch up on a Friday night. Luckily we booked as people were being turned away at the door. Not many tables inside which is a nice touch! Ordered popadoms and chutneys, 4 different curries & sundries and 4 garlic breads. All came piping hot and beautifully cooked! Bill came to £91 for the 5 of us which is really reasonable. This included 5 Gins, a shandy, kopperberg and a Coke. Would highly recommend and will most certainly be returning! Ps sorry if one member of our party was loud, she was just very excited to see us haha!

We came here with friends to be greeted and shown to our table. The waiting staff were very friendly and hospitable. The menu is extensive enough to provide options you may not have seen elsewhere but also reliable enough to include the usual Indian favourites. Our food throughout was excellent as was the table service. This is a place we will be more than happy to return to.

I havent been here for a long time, long before it was refurbished. It now lovely and cosy, with a warm atmosphere. The food delicious! Chicken so tender. I think it is also reasonably priced. Glad l came, wil be returning...x

Have eaten here couple of times recently, once midweek, and the other on a Saturday night. Very busy on the Saturday, half hour wait for a table, but not a problem. The foods very good, my wife wary of lamb dishes, but nice and tender here. Reasonable prices as well, don’t sting you for drinks like some others do. Definitely recommend.

I went for a meal with my son and the food was excellent. I had tandoori chicken starter and mixed tikka balti. The food was piping hot and ingredients were obviously freshly prepared. The service was excellent. I will definitely be going again.

We had arrived home from a trip and decided to order in a takeaway. Their menu has an unbelievable choice and our meal was delivered very quickly.On checking, an item was missing. A quick phonecall and the driver was back with the missing item - what service! It then got even better, the food was fantastic.

Just fancied an Indian meal and Ajmer Manzil fit the bill for a good standard Indian restaurant. Tasty dishes, nice selection. Naan bread spot on (but much prefer it not cut up and served in a little bucket).

Really very good Indian restaurant in Standish, great friendly staff and top drawer food. Only slight gripe is that there isn't a lot of room for tables so would recommend that you book in advance, especially at weekends.

OK, so you are visiting in-laws in Standish, a village on the edge of Wigan, and you need to eat. Not very hopeful you might think? But you would be wrong, because we found the most wonderful Indian restaurant (well Bangladeshi actually. This place was amazing. Decor good, service wonderful, food to die for. Lucky Standish I say!

Local Indian close to home. Our 4th visit in a month and not had a bad meal. Great variety and served piping hot. With a pint of cobra you can't go wrong.

Since the change from taste of Bengal (TOB) This place has started to struggle. They no longer had the set meal option, and if you have chicken tikka rather than just chicken, the edges tend to be rubbery and sometimes crunchy. In my opinion cinnamon just further up Preston Rd is much better quality, the hottest selections are more spicy and the set meal option makes it a really good price. The Ajmeer has gone backwards, which is probably why we were the only people in the place

Went as a family and we all really enjoyed. The place as been renovated since our last visit as now quite smart. The food was excellent from the starters to the main courses. We had 2 mixed starters and 4 different mains and we ate everything. Would visit again.

It was my birthday so the lads took me out for a curry. We chose a local curry house, and chose well!

We went here since the change of name to Ajmer Manzil , and refurb and were delighted with the food.

This restaurant now offers Extensive Food Menu and a Extensive Wine Menu. There is also a large selection of Gin's on a dedicated Gin Menu. The Place has been revamped to make it more cosy and comfortable and ensure a good night out for you and your family. Mr Miah is still the Head Chef and still dishing out his usual mouthwatering dishes and also. There are also a large selection of Signature Dishes which he created over the last year.

Curries are amazing, Excellent texture, quality went down a real treat friend's. We've had curries in lots of places, this one has that "X-factor" taste .. Our host Jamal was a lovely tho accentric guy, lots English style banter .. Very funny hardworking guy, asked us and other people in the restaurant for any other assistance, like top up's, wine, beer, fresh icy water. side plates of food, like onion Bhajis. Popadoms, etc. Service was a complimentary with the high standard of food.

The Bengal in Standish is our favourite Indian restaurant in the Wigan area. The food really is superb - my favourite dish being Chicken Tandori ‘ on a the bone.’ Staff are friendly and prices very reasonable.

Visited with 14 friends and the service was 2ND to none. The food was excellent and all 14 of us got exactly what we ordered at the same time too. Especially enjoyed the tea and coffee course. Would definitely come again

Had a friends birthday meal tonight at TOB absolutely fantastic, 10/10 meal and 10/10 service. Would recommend to anyone! Tea and coffe was a lovely extra 👌🏽

The taste of bengal has been around for ever and is a bog standard curry house serving a standard menu with a few different specialty dishes. It is not expensive and worth a visit if in Standish and dont want to take a taxi to what are better quality restaurants in the area. A no frills curry house but reasonably priced and at the side of a taxi company to get you home if you have been on the lash

Had heard good reviews about this Indian restaurant, was not disappointed, had a lovely meal, staff friendly and helpful with choice of menu.

De ided to go for tea here an what a good choice. Serbice was exvellent and food amazing woukd recommend. Only down side was resturant was a bit cold bitbthat could be because it had just ooened.

Really excellent 6 course meal for an incredible price, really love this place! I'd recommend the mixed tandoori starter and the chicken Jalfrezi.

Was in Wigan for surgery at wrightington hospital, so the night before my brother recommended this restaurant. All I can say is wow, we were served by reubal (not sure if this is spelt correctly) he was attentive and made sure we had an enjoyable meal. This place is a gem, not to be missed if in the area

Got called to meet sister in Wigan as she was in hospital early following day, I told her once she got off the train at Wigan she would be amazed by how friendly the people are.

A great Indian restaurant that we are lucky to have on our doorstep. Lovely food, good service and the set menu is excellent value. I love the lamb soup.

Decided to give this Indian a try after our usual was booked up.ToB is unlikely to win any awards imo and has a generally drab feeling and the food is pretty average, it reminder me of a Tesco ready meal to be honest.After ordering a mixed curry dish and specifying chicken and lamb, the lamb turned out to be beef, however this was disputed by the staff who insisted it was lamb.Can't say I'll be rushing back.

Looks are very deceiving. Small place and very busy. Staff were busy but still managed to be attentive to us. Food was excellent, very tasty but not overpoweringly hot (spice wise). Did not feel rushed to leave

From the outside Taste of Bengal is an odd mis-match of old and new. Old tiles, old windows with faded menu's and a new modern sign that reads "TOB" which strikes me as odd.Inside the place is quite modern and fresh and is larger than it appears. The staff were friendly and welcoming and the food was nice, it tasted fresh and had just the right amount of spices added to my food.We came in during a busy time, a party was in and the waiters seemed a little stressed out but all in all a good experience. I'd recommend coming here if you're local to the area and want something new to try.

Visited for the 6 courses offer, as this restaurant had been shortlisted for Wigan curry house of the year. Big portions but slow service and average food. One of our poppadoms was rancid. Overall, the meal took just under 2 hrs, despite there being only one other table in the restaurant. I probably wouldn't return.

I love this place, I have been visiting for years and in my opinion it has got better over the years. Ali the owner is a great guy and Rubel has done a great job in Ali's absence. I love the lamb chops, onion bhajis and the Chicken tikka madras (not too hot if requested!). Brilliant food, great service and value for your money.

Went in Christmas week with a group of 20plus friends. We had pre-ordered from the menu so we had minimal waiting time and good service. Everyone enjoyed their meals, my special biryani was delicious and I struggled to finish it. The Cobra beer no doubt assisted! Small but intimate venue with helpful staff.

Had a takeaway this week, good choice on the menu,didn't give us any freebies like other Indian takeaways in the area,service slow, but on this occasion they were busy,food always good.

We have had some lovely meals at this restaurant (and also picked up some delicious takeaways when we couldn't get a babysitter!); it's a traditionally styled curry house handily located just across the road from a real ale micro pub. The title of the review, however, relates to two previous disappointing experiences and our most recent visit last night. The first two events are things that just happen from time to time; one involved a (very) long wait between courses when they looked a bit overwhelmed on a busy night, and on another occasion we were given the wrong takeaway order. Both of which are irritating, but small, things that can happen anywhere. Last night, we 'phoned to book a table for later the same evening, left our name & confirmed a time. When we arrived, we were told there was no record of the booking. Again, these things happen. But it's the way in which they are dealt with that makes the difference. It was implied that the fault was ours, and no apology was offered. The suggestion seems to be that we were trying to buck their system on a busy night by claiming to have booked when we hadn't. This conversation took place in a restaurant full of people. No alternatives were offered, e.g. 'We are really sorry, we could fit you in later' or 'could we offer you a takeaway instead?'. This despite them acknowledging us as regular customers. We won't be going back. I'm sure this restaurant will be well patronised because the food is almost always lovely. But anywhere that practices such poor levels of customer service will eventually come unstuck.

We were the first people to arrive on a cold, wet, North Western winter's night and we were predictably ushered to the window seat to make the place look busy - it didn't work, we remained the only customers ... Other reviews speak warmly of this throw back of a Indian restaurant (which it is) and if the food had been better it would have been an unexpected trip down memory lane.Sadly, I've had better meals out out of a packet of Vesta, made myself, as a treat as a teenager back in the 70s. Service was slow and it wasn't particularly cheap.Will we be going back - err No!

Really tasty,aromatic food.The Special Menu at £12.95 is excellent value.There is a chutney and papadom tray,choice of starter and main course from the a la carte menu,plus either ice cream or coffee.Exce lent value and well cooked!The drinks are reasonably priced and the staff are friendly and helpful.

Visited on Saturday with my brother, food wasn't bad, starter arrived without mint sauce, waiter said he would bring some but never reappeared, long wait for our mains, but when arrived not bad at all. Would go back

Just when you thought that the impoverished north west had no decent Indians and that it was indeed the nerve centre of fried food and pizza , you stumble in desperation on a culinary oasis in the Taste of Bengal.A small restaurant located in the high street of Standish with parking at the rear , its advisable to book as it fills quickly.The menu is a little quirky , kidney bean side dish for example and it does beef as well as lamb. However the food is well prepared and it has real waiters who deliver excellent service and advice. The place is spotless unlike Rahmans filthy carpets [ a restaurant I visited recently and not worthy a visit] and a warm welcome is assured. The Dhansak and the Tikka Masala are worth a look. It does a 6 course for 12.95 that includes coffee and works out as excellent value as there are no areas of the menu that are not included in it.Overall an excellent restaurant and worth a visit , a refreshing change for Wigan.

Been visiting this Indian restaurant for 20 years. So what does that tell you? Very clean. Attentive, friendly staff. Great choice on menu. Fresh, tasty food. Always consistently perfect. Nice atmosphere. Would highly recommend for any occasion.

We have visited this restaurant many times and we are never disapointed. Ali is lovely as are the rest of the hard working staff. Drinks are kept an eye on and replenished when needed. Very clean place. Great food and very reasonable.New years eve this is where we go and its always great. Cant wait to visit again

Ok, if you're looking for fine dining, pretentious dishes or uber chic surroundings then don't bother - however, a warm welcome (Ali is a star) ,consistent food at a reasonable price then you won't go far wrong.Lamb chops always a great choice, Tandoori King Prawn both generous and authentic as are the majority of the Bangladeshi menu.If you are looking for memories of Indian cuisine 'growing up' in clean surroundings then I would certainly suggest going here.Not had a bad experience here be it eating in as a couple, large groups or recently, a takeaway delivered promptly - best Indian in Standish!

I live locally and this curry house is always worth a visit. Not too up market and just right. Staff are always friendly. Menu is always a little bit better then your run of the mill Indian. Food quality is always good.

Visit here quite regularly and have never been disappointed. Took advantage of the meal deal for £12.95 which is excellent value. Food as always was fresh and well coked. Staff friendly and to be honest I can't believe its not busier.

Our meal was average, we have tasted better Indian food to be honest. There could have been more choice on the menu.

I have been going to the taste of Bengal for a number of years. Don't be fooled by its dated exterior, this place serves great curry and nice, refreshing pints of cobra!Last night was the first time I had visited in a long time but it was a pleasant reminder of what a great place this is. Great offers with taste cards too, 2-4-1 :)I will be back :)

My experience here was always Saturday night after a night out, but last night went for tea. The place its self is small with lavatories upstairs, That doesn't bother me and has never, been here before and many in Southport or Blackpool similar. Last night however, stains on the table cloth were off putting.. There looked to be only one member of staff, that may be why, but should be spotless. Ordered food and my only complaint is the menu. Not that there isn't enough, just that it looks to be the same menu from years ago. Things like Onion Bhajis or Samosa's or not present which is strange. What I did order, Mulligatawny Soup to start: This came red hot as I like it and tasted delicious. Chicken Madras for mains, again no complaints was nice. Garlic Naan no complaints, tasty. Had a bowl of chips between us and these came as french fries. Happens a lot, but compared to a place that serves up home made chips there's no comparison. I and friends used to visit here twice a week. Originally the owner or manager who's no longer there was awesome, everything was spotless and the place was a gold mine, It could still be, new menu, a redecoration and improvements with hygiene and I'm sure many would flood back. A lot more local restaurants now so it has more to compete with. Don't expect too much if you visit, it's not a special occasion place. The food is good and the staff are friendly though.

I have visited a few times this year & the food has been fantastic, last night I went with some friends from Saddleworth & they were very impressed indeed.

Went their last night can say it was horrible sat next to load of drunk people prawn cocktail serve in half pint glass had king prawns for main touch and very chewy overcooked ice cream cheap nasty stuff got told king prawns would cost 2 pound extra bill came 3 pound extra eat two of them 1.50 for each spoke to staff about the rowdy clientel to be told they are ok as they are regulars please people avoid with all costs this was a horrible experience for me and my chap

10 of us visited on a Saturday evening and although the restaurant was not full service was quite slow. The food was ok - nothing terrible but neither was it memorable.

We pre booked a table quoting 'Taste Card' utilising the 2 for 1 offer. My partner and I both ordered a starter and a main course each. Starters were fine and my partner enjoyed his main course. However we both noted the unnatural colour of the Lamb Tikka Masala I ordered. It looked a toxic orange colour. The pieces of meat were so tough and it took some doing trying to saw through them. When I mentioned how tough the meat was we were told because of the different cooking method the meat is tougher than a slow cooked curry. I would have thought perhaps they used some stewing mutton instead of cuts suitable for this cooking method. It had no favour either. It has put us off going back again. Not sure whether by presenting the Taste Card we have actually been 'short changed'. Although we got the 2 for 1 offer (on food bill only), we were served inferior quality food. Very off putting!

Just got home 13/02/2015 from visiting this despicable restaurant. As soon as we walked through the door we was greeted and asked if we had a table booked and we said no he then said wait there and after speaking to one of his colleagues he just waved us over to the coldest table in the restaurant. We then had to wait for 15 minutes to get a drink upon which he brought flat bottled coke. It then took a further 15mins to take our order and then a further half an hour to get oit food. There was no customer service skills from the staff not even a please or thankyou. We half ate what could only be described as cold tasteless food with under cooked rice and just wanted to get out of there! We went to the bar to pay the bill and he simply said sit down he then brought the bill 5 mins later. We was going to use taste card which the waiter clearly seen and he came over to the table and moved the money out the way and picked up the taste card and simply said only Monday to Friday (which it was Friday) we did not say anything as we just wanted to get out of this despicable restaurant. This is probably the first meal we have ever been to that we have not tipped in. And forgot to say the upstairs and the toilets smell of what can only be described as BO. Keep away from this restaurant!!!!!!!

This is a small place but the food is very good and that's what really counts.staff are friendly I've nothing negative to say about taste of Bengal,well worth a visit if you've never been.
