The Raj in Wigan

Unfortunately the worst place I have ever had a curry. We came today for a curry with our friends. The only good thing was that the staff were great and friendly. However when explaining that it was my partner’s birthday they were told to purchase their own cake from the shops next door! Unfortunately the food was the worst I’ve ever tased, It was like being at an all inclusive restaurant. Which wasn’t great considering my partner is a qualified chef. We had no fault on the starters but We got a ‘chicken Bali bhuna’ this was like sloppy stew, which had no flavour! The chicken Bhuna was like a paste with no flavour. I fully understand that all Indian restaurants have different authentic flavours but this was the worst experience we’ve ever had. We did get offered another meal to compensate but after first taste it was a no. I must say that the starters were the only good thing of the meal. After asking for the bill the staff were not bother about us only explaining that we’d been offered another meal. I must point out. I’m not bothered about any discount on the food my reason for this review is to point out the disappointment of the food. We are from Leeds! We don’t like disappointment but today was.

Absolutely amazing place for dinner, delicious food 🍲

Hi all as a regular this place WAS amazing but the more popular it got the more the standards dropped. Shame as the the guys are really nice and was a lovely place to eat in or out.

Staff are always friendly and helpful too. If you ask to make a change to the meal they will do it, no problem. Food was delicious too and very reasonably priced.

First time here. Service was excellent food was delicious and for a Tuesday night it was quite busy with patrons dining in and takeaways going out. Prices same as other Indian restaurants. The menu had some new sauces I've not seen before. We enjoyed our food, and even though its the other side of Wigan & a bit of drive away from home we have already booked to go back there in a couple of weeks.

We had a family get together for my sons birthday. It was lovely the staff very attentive and food was delicious 😋

Decent meals, but very little heat in my wife's bhuna. I know it's not hot, but it was very very mild. Service was good.

Had a takeaway. Food was delicious, very prompt service, courteous staff and very reasonable price. Hope to visit again soon. Thankyou 😊

My local Indian restaurant. Delicious food with generous sized portions. Relaxed atmosphere and friendly service. Usually have some poppadoms with dips and then a mixed starter, followed by a main dish with rice and a naan. All this under 30 quid per person eating in, and I'm always full afterwards!

Went for tea before the football, really enjoyed. Had a delicious mixed tandoori korma. It was full of different meat and plenty of it. Chapati was good as was the rice and poppadoms. Well worth a visit

Our first visit recommended by someone local to the area. We loved the venue. Staff super helpful. Bespoked a dish for fussy vegetarian which tasted amazing 🤩. Wish I lived closer would definitely be a favourite. How lucky are you if you live in Wigan to have this fab restaurant. Thank you 👍

Another great New Years Eve meal !!! We are regular visitors of the Raj in Springfield, Wigan. Plenty of car parking spaces for those who drive. For anyone who's never been before you'll smell the fabulous Indian food before you get in. The atmosphere is relaxed & comfortable and the food is always delicious. RAJ staff can't do enough to make sure your dining experience is second to none. Our sincere thanks to all the staff including chefs for making it another fab evening.

Indian food is my favorite cuisine, for the past 50 years, I have enjoyed it from all four corners of England and many times overseas, but I can safely say this is the worst food without exception I’ve experienced. The manager came to our table and asked if we enjoyed our meal (we had all had different dishes) we all replied in unison no we hadn’t and politely told him it was very poor, he seemed really surprised and offered us 25% reduction to the bill which basically meant we had only wasted near to £80. In fairness we had dined there approximately 2 years previous on that occasion it was no better than ok, so possibly our mistake by returning which we will not be doing again. I don’t get any pleasure or satisfaction from leaving negative reviews, but feel it’s only fair to leave honest feedback, which hopefully will be taken as constructive.

The food I ordered was Chicken Jalfrezi and it was far too hot to eat. Even when I stipulated I wanted it mild. Also the curries my friends had which was a lamb Karahi and Rogan Josh all looked the same and lacked taste. I was genuinely looking forward to this meal and came away disappointed as did my other friends. The service was ok, but as we were a late sitting felt rushed as they started cleaning around us and with 1 hour to closing this was quite off putting especially when the hoover was switched on. My 1st and last time at the Raj.

I would highly recommend this curry house, excellent starters soft thin lightly crispy bread, curry itself was very tasty just the right amount of flavours and spices. Rice was excellent to. Will definitely go again very soon. Kind regards Steve

Can only say food was terrible. Ordered south Indian chicken, it was vindaloo hot with no flavor. Chicken was tough. Rice was clumpy. Won't be returning. Can make a better curry myself.

First time we've ever been there. Food was brilliant, everything fresh and very tasty. Parking onside, staff were very helpful. Definitely worth a visit again.

Not happy with our last visit. The food was not good. Normally you expect one dish to be below average but with a score of 7 out of 10 below par it has made us determined to avoid this restaurant in the future.

Are here the other week after myself and a group of friends went go-karting in the area. Booked over the phone with minimal hassle. Overall had a great time here. Food prices were reasonable, food was delicious and generously proportioned and staff were warm and friendly. Would eat here again if we are back in the area.

Delicious food, reasonably priced, and wonderful service in a beautifully atmospheric restaurant. The Raj never fails to impress even the most discerning customer. We had the garlic mushrooms starters and the JalaJule curries, one chicken, one lamb. The curry was as hot as advertised, but still full of complex flavours not hidden by the chillies. Both were absolutely delicious, and beautifully presented. The service is impressively discreet yet attentive, even though we went at quite a busy time, when it was almost full, and the portions are too big for one sitting, for most people, with takeaway leftover bags offered as standard. The Raj gets many local restaurant awards, and it’s easy to see why. Absolutely recommended.

I met a friend to catch up over a curry. Both our mains looked identical even though we ordered completely different dishes. The similarities continued through the night. Both of us suffered stomach cramping and bloating. Something wasn't quite right. A shame really. The food and service were very good. We won't be returning.

I was put off my food by many of things but one that was most concerning it had only just opened at 5.30pm and one waiter had clothes on that looked liked they hadnt been washed in a long while and been worn time and time again covered in food stains he served are food at the table which put me right off the place didnt smell very nice either my husband says it smelt of damp smelly mop but am not sure that was the smell if am honest but was off putting too which left us leaving almost all our food as my mind did start to wonder about many other things on the way out we paid and i noticed someone come out the kitchen no uniform with his track suit bottoms tucked in his socks and didnt look clean either just think dealing with food and serving customers in a restuarant staff should be clean daily in fresh clean ironed clothes and kitchen staff should also be wearing clean aprons hats etc Indian food is my favourite and have visited many in my life and never left a bad review about any till now yes i may not of liked a certain curry from a different restuarant in my time but everyones cooking is different with different flavours and spices but i could still not give them a bad review just because there curry flavour is different but ive found them all to be clean and fresh clean uniforms and no smell in the restuarant its self hopefully this changes but i will not be going back here ever sorry

This is the fifth time I've been to The Raj in Wigan. Service was great and the food excellent, you won't be disappointed.

Nothing extra ordinary food was not up to the mark , ordered chicken tikka came as chilli powder with chicken awfull taste and two of mates got food poisoning Basically avoid this place

excellent service as always, food was fantastic and big portions, everyone so welcoming and friendly make you feel like family, they even dropped me wife and 2 kids at home fantastic place 100% recommended.

Belated birthday dinner for my daughter. We were a party of 6 (11 to 50+ yrs). We had 5 staters. All 5 were varying mixed plates. They scoffed the lot. Mains, I think, was: Korma, butter chicken, chicken tikka massala & balti chicken. 5 pilau rice & 1 mushroom rice. Varying naans. I tried the sauces from everyone's dish & they all tasted amazing. All washed down with beer to appletiser. My daughter had a Ferrero ice-cream with candle & an obligatory birthday serenade. The lads who served us were really lovely & made us feel very relaxed. So, between food & service? It's crazy not to stop in here for a celebration dinner, even a romantic meal or just for a weekend get-together. Highly recommend The Raj

Me and my husband have been here before and it was lovely. We brought our children here for the first time today and they were so kind with them. They were even very patient with my eldest who is suspected to have autism we can not fault this place at all

Really Awreet Jackbit. As good as it was back in 2002. The consistency of high quality Bangladeshi cuisine is perfect. Never disappoints. Chef like his team of choice, World Class.

Very dissapointed. Food was luke warm. I Sent mine back. Curry was watery. Not much flavour at all. Everyone of us had a poor meal except for my daughter. Wont return at xmas time. Too many people to cater for.

Visited Christmas Day. The wall next to our table had curry marks on it, we had to clean it with wet wipes. The food was of poor quality and had no flavour. The food is usually good at the restaurant but we was very disappointed with the quality of food for the price we paid on Christmas Day. One meal was cold and had to be sent back. The others were watery and tasteless. The waiter did kindly give my son an extra meal to take home free of charge because we complained but I won’t be visiting again any time soon. The meal had to be pre paid in cash only so we only had to pay for the drinks in the day but was overcharged for this but this was rectified when we mentioned we had been over charged.

The food is absolutely mouthwateringly delicious!!! However the staff is more interested in watching Football on the TV than making sure if you need anything. We are still going back because of the food. Best authentic Indian food in Wigan.

Stumbled upon this restaurant from driving past a few times, myself my partner and our two children dined here, food was lovely, portion sizes were spot on and overall price was brilliant for 4 of us! And that was including all having poppadoms and starters as well as mains and extra, will definitely be returning in the future. Staff were also brilliant friendly and fab with my 2 kids

Lovely meal from the poppadoms to oh I'm stuffed, great choice & the flavours in the food we ordered were delicious, the guys looking after us were very attentive, helpful & friendly, we'll be returning very soon & highly recommend.

Excellent food, lots of flavour and super comfortable for my coeliac wife as they were very competent in their knowledge of what she could have. Even dishes that contained no gluten, but we’re cooked in the same fryer were highlighted to us.

Four of us went to the restaurant on Saturday evening. Lovely atmosphere and great service from friendly staff. All the food was delicious. The best butter chicken I’ve ever eaten.

Ive been to the raj lots of times and its always been just perfect. The staff are professional and very friendly and the food is great. The general vibe of the place is relaxed but smart.

I’ve left this place feeling humiliated and disappointed. We come here every week and have never had an issue other than minor things. I’m not one to complain at all as I’ve worked in customer service myself, the food didn’t taste as good as usual. Which I understand may have just been a bad day as we all have these. When asked how was my food I told them my honest opinion when one man understood and apologised. After paying my bill, another man came over and began to question my complaint. I believed that I found plastic in my food however I was told that it was garlic - although it wasn’t chewable and tasted nothing at all like garlic lol. After being told once I just dropped it until another man came over laughing telling me it’s just garlic. I just feel it’s very unprofessional and definitely not how you should respond to a customer complaint. The chicken tikka Massalla had virtually no sauce only chicken where I was told I have to ask for extra sauce? I really didn’t know that was a thing. And after complaining but also being understanding I wasn’t even offered any money off my bill whatsoever. Anyway rant over, I shall not be returning.

Staying in Wigan looking for a curry fix found this great little restaurant. Good to see two other tables occupied and a few people waiting for takeaways when we entered( about 18.15 so quite early) took this as an endorsement. Food did not disappoint but...

The food here is always perfect. Its so fresh, hot and tasty. Staff are fantastic. The only downside for wheelchair users is the entrance is tight and there is a threshold. Also the loo for people with challenges does usually have a pile of spare chairs in the corner. 🤣 That said whenever we want asian food it's the only restaurant we will go to.x

Poor food quality, chicken tandoori dry and seemed to be warmed up! Children’s chicken tikka masala was very watery and tasteless. Childrens korma was ok but again tasted watered down. Mango chutney was like dish water! Definitely will NOT be going back!

Frankly, the only reason that I gave them one start is so that I can write this review. They don't deserve it. People from work invited me there for a Christmas curry. Arrived at 7:20. Food was put in front of me a 9. At one point I thought, if I phone a taxi now, and Just Eat a curry, will I be eating food, sooner than if I stay seated in this Indian restaurant and ask them to feed me. They do realise that it is their job to serve me food.,right? Don't answer that. I found out last night. He treated us like an inconvenience. Food was alright though.
