MORE AT TripAdvisor

We went here on a Tuesday to have a meal for my birthday. We were seated at a table and were there maybe 45 minutes when the couple at the table beside us finished their meals and left. We were 3/4 of the way through ours and a staff member asked us if we'd finished yet. We hadn't. There was a group of 4 people at the door (not unusual for the place) and a few minutes later I saw the head waitress indicate toward us to another waitress. Again we were asked if we'd finished and we hadn't. I noticed the waitress repeatedly glancing toward us while serving other customers, as we were trying to enjoy our meals. It was clear they wanted the two tables for the group at the door. There were plenty of customers who'd been there before we came in who were still talking and enjoying their evenings. The moment I'd finished eating the staff member asked to take my plates and my friend reluctantly gave up her bowl, which still wasn't quite finished. I asked the waitress if there was some sort of problem and she said no, just that they had a group of four at the door that they wanted to seat here. Quite simply, there was more money waiting. Our table hadn't been reserved by anyone, for the record. Instead of enjoying our evening on what was supposed to be a special night, we had to hurriedly finish and then leave straight away, because another customer had arrived. Instead of enjoying conversation we had to exit into the cold. It's normal that restaurants get busy in London, but the fact that we were one of the last customers in and the first out simply because the table beside us had opened up is pretty unacceptable.

Firstly I was in the queue for 40 mins. Waiting for a table for 3. People that came after me were seated first because they were 4 or 2 people. The waiter told us we would be seated in 10 minutes then offered us the bar, we wanted a table. Finally we were seated at the very back and cramped by the kitchen and near the back door with a cold breeze. The server was rude. The food was mediocre and bland. Do not believe the hype because there are people queuing. Possibly the worst Japanese I've ever had.

The waiter forgot to submit our order and when I asked where the food was the staff made a big deal about apologising… but only to my boyfriend. They even offered him complimentary drinks! But not for me even though both the waiter forgot to submit order for the whole table and therefore both our food dishes were very late. One member of staff was better though but the others really only apologised to the guy. It was shocking behaviour to be honest. The food was good but due the rudeness I will not be going back.

Great food and really value for money (chicken bento boxes are a serious affair and would only recommend double portions for those Man V food challenges). Just be prepared to wait a little while for your meal as service can sometimes be a little slow - give you time to build up an appetite ! Riso cotto male, come incollato. Verdure insapori.

No volveremos

I went to go eat with a friend after work. We felt like Japanese food so decided to go here. This branch of Taro is quite small. The tables are closely packed together. We were given the menu and in my opinion I found the selection not to be as good at the other branch located closer to Tottenham Court Road. They didn't have the vegetable tempura dish on the menu or the octopus balls - Takoyaki. The other branch offered this. When we were ready to order the waitress came. She did not smile and seemed unfriendly. The ordering took quite a while as there seems to be no system in how they take down the orders. We asked for the tempura salmon avocado roll. She did not once ask if we wanted the 4 or 8 pieces. When it came she assumed we wanted 8.What was nice was the tofu don dish was nice and the karaage chicken. It was lightly golden brown and cooked just right. The bento box was a good size. It's a place to go to if you don't mind a small selection to choose from. I don't know whether I will return but it's a good basic Japanese restaurant that offers some authentic dishes.

Myself and 4 friends popped into the restaurant to meet some friends who were already eating and joined them at their table. Most of us had already eaten, but one guy wanted some food, so we were just looking for a meals for him and some drinks. The waiter came over and took the food order and the drinks orders from the rest of us, and then informed us they couldn't sell us drinks without food. He didn't state why this was, he just kept stating we had to order food. One of the drinks was alcoholic so I presumed it could be a restriction on their licence, but I have since checked their premises licence and found no restrictions regarding the sale of alcohol in that way, so I'm presuming it must be a company policy. There wasn't a notice on the menu to say drinks could only be ordered with food or anywhere visible within the restaurant. I'd understand if we had just popped in, took up space at a table, and just ordered £10 worth of drinks, but our friends were already using the table and therefore we were not causing loss of business by sitting on the other spare spaces on the bench. This wasn't the main issue we had, or caused me to write this review. We were trying to work out what snacks we could order alongside our drinks and asked the waiter to return in a few minutes after we had decided. We looked through the options and decided what we wanted to have, but the waiter never returned. Our friends then finished their meals and we left as there was no point trying to order and then holding them up whilst we ate. We then had to go to a different restaurant so the member of our party who hadn't eaten was able to get something. To top it all off, the same waiter then tried to charge my friend a £5 something service charge.

My family and i were hungryIn the street, it was difficult to make a choice due to the number of restaurantsThe only one where there was not queue in the front was TARO so let s go for this one.As starter, we ate vegetable gyozaAnd for main: noddle for my brother, ramen soup for my mom and a bento for me. For noddle and soup it was not a discovery, the dishes has been finishedMy bento was colored. It looks like not enough but finally,i was completly full. Each compartment (sushi/maki, carott, soja, rice and duck) was good except broad bean because i dont like it usual^^The restaurant looks like a canteen but we did not eat the same way in it :)

As ever polite, prompt service. Food was excellent with a good selection. The on tap Kirin beer was very refreshing and when the food arrived it was hot and tasty.Love this place, always has a positive friendly atmosphere.

A departure from the craft-menu-on-a-clipboard, bearded wazzockery of modern Soho, Taro is unfussy, with an extensive menu and good waiting staff. We went on a Monday night, were seated, served and fed quickly, and had a generally very positive eating experience. Our waiter (young Mediterranean lad with glasses) was attentive and helpful, sat us in a good spot and helped to advise on the menu (including that the Miso was not vegetarian). The food was prompt, and tasty. I had the tofu don which was in a light tempura and accompanying sauce (My only criticism would be that the sauce to rice ratio meant that there was a bit of dry rice left over) and the edamame, and my partner had the Teriyaki bento box which was, by all accounts, exceptionally good. I would recommend this restaurant if the quality and value of food is more important to you than which graphic designer wrote their menu and which scandinavian prog-disco they have playing on their ipod over the restaurant speaker. Recommended, and we will return at some point.

Have eaten at the Taro on Old Compton Street many times before over the years, always go for the chicken donburi which is just right for a nice dinner at £7.90, comes with plenty of chicken and rice and there is also a larger portion for a few pounds more. The layout and set-up is canteen style, always get a seat, no need to book, friendly staff.

I came here for dinner with a friend last week and was both satisfied but disappointed. I was satisfied with my order, the Chirashi bowl. It came with a variety of seafood; salmon, tuna, octopus, sweet prawn, cooked prawn, squid, etc. I liked that it included that many different types as well as the sweet egg/omelette, a decent amount of wasabi, pickled ginger and rice! For the price you pay, I think it's worth it but the freshness of the fish just isn't there. Not that it was stale or old, but it definitely didn't taste as if it were cut fresh when ordered.

Myself and a few friends tried out Taro after hearing good things about it, we were shocked by the quality of food, I had the pork Katsu (Don't order it). The service was very bad and they tried to overcharge us by 40 pounds which we very nearly paid, we then had to run them through what we had had as they had forgotten (lucky we are honest). They then added an extra 5 pounds service charge, there was no service involved, it was quick in and get out type of place. We will not be going again!

Great food for all tastes. We absolutely love ramens, especially during cold London winter. Portions are very generous, you even might want to share a soup. Delicious plum wine! Fairly priced. Good service. Would definitely recommend.

I went there with a friend for dinner. We ordered 2 bentos, takoyaky, gyoza and a few extra sushi pieces. Everything tasted so delicious and was served very quickly. The interiors are simple but comfortable; the waiters very smiley and friendly. We booked a table via website but apparently they don't use it, however they apologised and eventually found a table just for us. I definitely recommend it to everyone who likes Japanese food and wants to feel like in Japan for one dinner. Also the price are reasonable and the quality is definitely good. I will go again, again, again :)

We went here on a Wednesday night. It was busy and understaffed. It took 15 minutes to attract the attention of someone to take our orders and another half an hour for anyone to bring us a glass of water. One of our dishes arrived after that. The other one never tuned up, event hough we'd now been waiting for over an hour since ordering and had reminded them twice. Having waited my friend and I shared the one dish (which was now cold) and went to complain to the manager (who was on holiday). The waiter agreed we didn't have to pay for the dish which never materialised but didn't offer any further compensation. I have never left a restaurant before hungry having felt like I had truly wasted my time. Disappointing.

Very tasty food, very reasonable prices. Huge menu too, with lots of very tempting dishes. Only criticism is that it is very canteen-like, so you can expect to be squeezed in pretty tightly with other diners. And the chairs are pretty hard, so you won't want to stay sitting for very long. But if you're after good quality, reasonably-priced Japanese food, this place is definitely for you.

Recommend the Bento boxes as you get loads of food and its very tasty. Sashimi, sushi, big bowl of rice, miso and much more besides. Swift efficient service and though you can't book that was not a problem even on a Thursday around 8pm. Will go again and again!

First thing that stroke us was that is was pretty empty for a Saturday night but we wanted to give a try. We ordered several rolls and nigiri. Rolls were okay for London standards. Except one of them: spicy tuna, which was not edible. Nigiri was bad, too. Last time I try to eat sushi in London. Staff were very nice. It's not their fault, I guess. If you want good sushi at a reasonable price, go to the west coast seaport in British Columbia.

I went with friends to this nice restaurant right in the heart of Soho, serving up delicious Japanese fare within a comfortable setting. I ordered the gyoza and kara-age chicken which were flavoursome and perfectly cooked, however they provide dishes such as katsu curry and dons (rice dishes with egg and beansprout). The restaurant has quite affordable prices and sometimes offer complimentary tea. But the rapidity of the service can change hands.

It's an odd space which feels like a school canteen and has a two storey space which makes for little atmosphere but the staff are friendly and efficient and they offer sushi, bento boxes and ramen at competitive prices, portions are large and they will package up anything you can't eat to take away. The bento boxes come in a wide variety but watch out for one of the rice rolls which has an incredibly hot chilli centre .

You know when you have something so good that you go back to the same place for the same thing a few days later? The tonkotsu ramen here is great - rich broth, tender pork, all the other bits you expect. The place looks a bit cheap and cheerful but the service is friendly and very quick.

I applied for the floor staff recruitment here. The attitude of the elderly Japanese man called the president was too bad. He hung up on me while I was still talking. I went to the store for an interview, but it didn't start even after the scheduled time and I had to wait for about 20 minutes. On the way home, I saw a similarly elderly woman, my wife? I also thanked him for an interview, but he completely ignored me. I made a CV and went all the way to the store, but I didn't hear anything about the results of the job offer. (I wish they would at least say that they would contact you only if they decide to hire you 😯) I don't like the feeling that only my personal information has been taken out. We are recruiting staff frequently. There may be a problem with the store.

I used to love the atmosphere and food at Kurobuta but both were missing when I visited on Thursday. The service was terrible; dirty glasses brought to the table, asked to circle our own items on the menu because waitress had no idea what was being served, wrong dishes sent to us and items we didn’t receive still placed on the bill. The food has also massively gone down hill. Avoid crispy squid, it has absolutely no “crisp”, and the wagyu sliders Kurobuta is known for, were average at best.Staff unfortunately out of their depth and unprofessional which makes the 12.5% service charge unjustifiable.
