Tang's Chinese in Southampton

Food came cold. Egg fried rice was just boiled rice with maximum of 3 bits of egg with the rice. Prawn toast burnt, Two whole king prawnd in the K Prawn chow mein. Everything was disgusting. Never order again on a Monday when you're go to Chinese is shut. Absolute waste of money.

The food was amazing. Such a lot to choose from. Every dish was cooked fresh and was so flavourful. The staff were very helpful and friendly. We will definitely be going back again and again.

Unfortunately, if someone would like to use the buffet themselves, this is not possible. I was refused entry. At other Tang's this is not a problem. I do not recommend.

The environment is clean and comfortable, with soft music playing and dining relaxed. Reasonable prices and various styles. The taste is also very good. Will definitely come again.

Gluten free option for some dishes, that was a plus.(well done to check with chef) Food was awesome, nothing too complain. Staff and service was allright, happy to help and provide information about main dishes. I did not try sake but next time I will be open to try it. Atmosphere is quiet and calm, not very crowded.

Food was amazing and the staff were lovely! Food comes in decent portions and can get more if wanted (great quality too) plus great quality food for the vegan/vegetarian costumers. And service was very knowledgeable and welcoming. I can’t express how brilliant this place really was! Really recommend this place! 🤩

We went to Tangs as couldn’t get into a local Chinese nearby. First impressions are that it’s very bright! A warm welcome inside, friendly and accommodating staff. Menu clear and concise, great choice both for meat and vegetarian diets. Food came quickly, tasty and well presented. A little pricey but a city centre restaurant so realise running costs are high. Quality ingredients and hot and flavoursome. For a Friday I’d have expected it to be busier so some tips for the owners; When you’re sat at the tables in the window it feels like you’re in a goldfish bowl. The windows need a blind or curtains to break up the glass, the lights are too bright and too many of them. It’s not good to eat whilst people can see in from the outside. Very off putting. That said, the food was very good and we’d go back but would sit away from the windows. .

We had a reunion here last night and had a thoroughly enjoyable time, the food was epic, the service was just right, by that I mean no was hovering around like a pack of wolves trying to take your plate away before you had finished, the staff just let us take our time. As for the atmosphere, we became friends when we were 4/5, when we started school, we're in our 60's now, to be honest we could have been on the moon and the atmosphere would have been brilliant. But the staff were kind courteous and jolly which made the evening even more special and enjoyable. Will definitely be recommending to friends, family and returning again.

Great food and service, good value too. Lovely little place

Tangs was an emphatic experience, mr tang himself was extremely pleasant and so were his staff members. Left with a very full and happy belly. I will be back.

All for food was from the deep freeze. We ordered the £13.50 menu of two courses. First course was 1 x vegetarian spring roll. The vegetarian rolls were 4 small rolls with a sauce. The ordinary roll was one 7cm roll with same contents as the vegetarian roll and very greasy. I asked for a bowl of warm water to wash my hands. The owner said that he couldn't provide this as it was unhygenic and I should go upstairs and wash my hands in the bathroom! I had also ordered sweet and sour pork, and my friend ordered Bean curds (I cant remember exact name but it was vegetarian). fter we'd eaten the starter, I was told they'd run out of the pork and would I like the sweet and sour chicken. All meals were heated up in the microwave. The plain rice was was lumpy and dry. My friend was unable to eat her meal as it looked and tasted like square sponges. What a disappointment! I gave ane star for the waitress, she was excellent.

We went here for a lunch and enjoyed the very good value lunch buffet menu. Friendly staff who were happy to advise on gluten free options for my father, and we all had plenty of choice. Would definitely go here again.

Tangs has supposedly been part of Southampton for twenty years or more by this point. They have a buffet style menu, lazy Susan tables and they were fairly busy on a Saturday evening. The decor is looking a little dated but the food did not disappoint. I had the prawn chow mein and salt and pepper squid which were both delicious and fresh.

We missed “home cooked food”and was hunting for one close to home and we found Tang’s after few attempts. When they served me and I looked at the texture of the rice and I know this is the right one! 1. Their ginger chicken with rice and vegetable soup for lunch are super good and almost 100% close to our home cooked food. Highly recommended!

Came with my sister today for lunch after our afternoon tea was cancelled. We loved it! My sister is a vegetarian and they had a vegetarian menu with lots of options. Once the food arrived everything was hot, fresh and and my sister was so impressed with the vegetarian dishes. The portions were huge, bigger than expected ansdtherefore we over ordered! What makes this place great is the staff. The Manager/owner was so welcoming, helpful, funny and friendly and the waitress was attentive and very helpful. Tang's also is quietier where it's a litttle further up from the shops which was lovely when we wanted a nice lunch and not crowded by others nearby. There was nothing negative about this place for me and my sister is thrilled she found a Chinese that caters so well with veggie options. The toilets are upstairs however. This wasn't an issue for us but might be for others. Best buffet I've had in about 10 years.

Two course £13.50 lunch. Spring roll starter very small. Soup so so. Mains decent. Poor tired decor. Carpet revolting. 10% service charge but not mentioned on menu but added anyway. Was poor value without this including 2 flat soft drinks. No doubt from a bottle. Poor value full stop. Avoid. We certainly will in future.

Came here this afternoon for our work Christmas lunch (table of 20), was my first time and can honestly say best Chinese food I have had in a long time! So much flavour, fresh and not at all greasy or heavy like most. Staff were super friendly and welcoming, quick service and asking if we need more drinks clearing all plates and glasses consistently. 10/10 would highly recommend! £19.95 for the lunch menu. Starters top tier and mains very impressed, thank you Tangs!

Great food service grate good price

We recently popped to Southampton for the day and decided to head for Tangs. We weren't disappointed. The staff made us feel very welcome and were happy to stop and chat. We decided to go for the excellent value lunch menu which was 2 courses for £13.50. We had the mushroom soup and salt and pepper chicken wings to start. The soup was was watery but tasty. The chicken wings were delicious I was told. For mains we had tofu szechuan and sweet and sour chicken with rice. The mains are served on a large plate so there was plenty of food. There was a good selection of drinks on offer including Stella on draught. All in all a lovely lunchtime meal.

Had the buffet option in the evening. It’s great because you can try a lot of different things. Also a whole veggie menu. We had 7 starters and 4 mains between the 2 of us. Good size potions and left a good amount of full.

The food was absolutely incredible (ate most of my boyfriend's then had to order my own - szechuan duck and sweet and sour chicken), and the service was so so lovely. Can't recommend highly enough. I genuinely look forward to the next time I can come back!!

Been going here for years and it has a really good atmosphere. Service is brilliant and I recommend it for a good family run restaurant

Had an absolutely wonderful dinner today! The food was scrumptious! So much flavour. The staff were incredibly friendly and couldn’t have asked for better service. Amazing meal!

Texture 3.5/5 - Unbalanced, some beef are soft and some bdef are rough. Peppers and onions are fine though. Excellent service and tasty food. We opted for the buffet (£26.95 each, minimum of 2 people). We went for 7 starters, and then 5 mains; this was a good amount, although I assume they adjust portions depending on how many you pick, but you can order more after if you've still got some room! The duck starter in particular was very good and a generous portion too (see photo). Everything was fresh and had great flavour. Sometimes when having Chinese food you can come away spending the rest of the evening needing lots of water (because of the high salt and/or msg) but this wasn't one of those times, so a big plus there as far as I'm concerned. If you opt for the buffet, order tap water (or anything else without bubbles!) to drink so you can make the most of trying out lots of the different food options. There's plenty of bars nearby to go after for a drink once some of that food has gone down!

Fantastic restaurant! Owner is so friendly and staff always make you feel like the most important table in the room! Food is excellent and very reasonably priced for the buffet menu!

Terrible experience. Manager rude on the phone. Blamed the new staff. The food was cold and hard, look like it was reheated. We booked via Uber and the manger said we should just get money back with them, despite them delivering in sub 10 mins.

Went there tonight for the first time with my partner. We both had the buffet menu. It was absolutely lovely and I would highly recommend it.

Despicable This surely has to be one of the least enjoyable experiences I have ever had in a Chinese or any other restaurant Refused to serve me the entry-level Set Meal A at £25, because this serves 2 and I was the only person in the restaurant. I ordered from the menu - one starter (ribs), one main (shredded beef), egg rice, two 330ml Tsingdao beers. £45. No complimentary items such as crackers, fortune cookies or even wipes. No finger bowl for the ribs, no serving spoons, nothing. The food was bland, the atmosphere brash and uncompromising, and then the local drunks started to arrive. One demanded food and was entertained with a 10 minute conversation before giving up and going away. Another two sat at a table and began a belching competition £45, and all I wanted was a quiet evening with maybe a couple of beers. KFC, Burger King, Yates, Slug & Lettuce and a dozen other alternatives are within a minute's walk. £45. Was I mugged, or am I a mug? Probably both, but this is one to avoid.

£26.75 - lunch buffet, expensive for the overall quality ! Starters- very “shinny” oily , in particular the spring rolls . The fried squid was reheated and again, so oily ! From the main dish I had only the 3(!) prawns and little rice. The crispy duck was ok, therefore the 1 star I offered. The cutlery was cheap, too. Service - basic. I’m not gonna punish my health and pocket by eating there again. Avoid !

Ate here Friday 2nd December and had food poisoning. Our food was reheated from the lunchtime buffet, even though we ordered from the main menu. Prices have gone sky high for poor quality food and service. I have eaten here a few times before and never had an issue, but will never eat there again.

High prises for poor quality food. Main came out before starter, starter had been microwaved, so was like eating volcanic lava. Really wasn't worth the money charged Will avoid for future visits to Southampton.

It was my husband birthday there was 6 of us and the service and food was excellent.

All the dishes we ordered was so salty, one of them we couldn’t it. They charged the service charge as well which is not worth the service. We did tell them that all food was so salty and we they replyn was ‘ oh really, sorry!’

Quite liked the space. But food was mediocre (low sample size, only eaten there once). Ordered 椒盐排骨 "Salt and pepper fried pork ribs" for lunch, it was very bad, very, very bad. Ordered stir fried chicken with bean sprouts, plus fried rice and fried spring rolls as a lunch set. Taste was mediocre/okay, but at least it's not too salty which I think is good. Ordered wonton soup. Wonton was quite good tbh. I couldn't tell whether it was from a frozen package or handmade. If it's frozen then the portion would be considered too small.

Really nice dinner buffet! You can order unlimited starters and one main each. Really good for the price per person and the food is fab! 💖

As a black couple, we were never asked if we were ok. The man in charge went round to check on all other white couples and asked if they were ok but not us. We waited if he would do the same to us but no. We got up paid and left. I guessed race played a card here, so ignore my review if you are white as it does not apply to you.

Wow. Haven’t seen Tang and the team for over 14 years and he didn’t disappoint. Amazing food, cheap prices and top service! We went for the buffet……huge selection of dishes and very tasty! Thank you Tang….we’ll be back soon!

Completely Terrible! No Tripadvisor page - they had it deleted. I ordered a Tsingtao Beer and Prawn Crackers as soon as I walked in, to have while looking at the menu. I was given a Gin & Tonic and no prawn crackers. I was then brought a Tsingtao which was flat and 5 months out of date. I didn’t drink any of it after the initial sip. The lady was unclear what I meant so the owner came over and said it was how the beer always is. I ordered a starter of Chicken Satay which arrived. Then the prawn crackers followed afterwards. They were so soft I could bend them. I sent them straight back. I had the starter and then asked for the bill to go and have a main meal somewhere else. I had been charged for the beer and the chicken satay. I refused and finally they only made me pay for the chicken satay. I used to go here weekly a few years ago for the lunch buffet. It was wonderful. I left that night and did tell the owner that I was very saddened to see that standards had slipped so far. I hope they turn things around. I was the only customer in there that night, and £7.50 for a starter and having that customer leave won’t keep the doors open for much longer.

Waited ages for our duck, had too ask twice for it then the manager came to order our mains and we said we were still waiting for the pancakes, didnt seem intrested when we complained at the end of the meal.

We were going to an event at the Guildhall and looked on maps to see what places were about for a pre show meal. Looked at the reviews for Tangs and phoned up and booked as the majority of reviews were good. We arrived at opening time and ordered from the all you can eat buffet menu. The food was excellent! I can’t understand some of the negative reviews I’ve seen. The location and opening time for a 7:30 show at the Guildhall is perfect! Next time we will come here again, the restaurant filled up fairly quick after opening which is always a good sign. Highly recommended!

Really nice piping hot and tasty food. We got one of the set meals for 2 takeaway which had a great variety of flavours. Normally after Chinese you dont always feel great from eating so much rich processed food but I have to say the food here dosent feel too greasy and leave you feeling abit rough after, like other Chineses can. Sensible prices too!

Avoid. Very disappointed as we liked it a few years ago. First of all our food tasted like it was made on very old oil and dirty pan. I & my partner had 2 different dishes and both of them tasted the same bad. (Sweet and sour chicken and pork with vegetable + soups) Second you can see the dishwasher room from the restaurant and what surprised me they wash all by hand with very dirty sponges, I was shocked. And the service is very bad. We asked for chopsticks and got chips instead?! Also the lady who served us didn’t understand what green tea is. It’s sad overall because we really liked the restaurant before. Also, they include a service fee in the bill, keep in mind it’s not mandatory to pay so you need to ask them to take it out of your bill if not satisfied.

Food was not as good as it use to be and price has rocketed

The chicken dishes here are made from frozen processed meat or something just as bad, the taste was terrible. At 3AM I was awake with terrible stomach cramps and I am still ill on the toilet at 6.20am. Avoid

The owner was really friendly. The restaurant is very basic, almost like a small school dinner hall. The starters and duck, from the buffet, was amazing. However the mains for all of us (4 different dishes) were a little overcooked resulting in chewy chewy chicken! The main off putting point though was the cost of the drinks - £40 for 3 vodkas and 1 coke! This will actually stop us returning which is a shame.

Love this place, its been there for years. Not much of a view and the place is a bit small and basic. Food is great, family run i think so again good service.

I have used this restaurant many times over the years mainly at lunch times and once with Christmas party. Ihave never been disappointed with the table service or the standard of meals there is a choice or menus .

I was given chicken after ordering bean curd. Not ideal when you are vegan - tried to call the restaurant and they didnt answer.

Basic British Chinese style restaurant, good Buffet, plenty of choice. Staff pleasant, waited a while for our main to arrive, but it was hot and portion size good. Actual dining atmosphere and decor was not the most appealing but otherwise OK.

Went during the Eat Out offer period. Food was average, nothing special. Drinks are from a bottle behind the bar. Lovely glass of flat coke. The restaurant was crowded to fit as many in as possible.

When back to Tangs last night after restaurants reopened after lockdown. They staff were very attentive, they all had masks and gloves on, they cleaned the table as soon as people left. Food was amazing as always and it was a really lovely evening. Thank you Tangs ☺️

Coke was flat and seemed to be watered down , food was good service was good although the first waitress tried to minimise our order we were also given complimentary prawn crackers so they could finish their own food was asked to give them a few minutes.

I walked over a mile to get to the restaurant,only to find that it is a minimum of two people for the buffet deal. I wish that had been stated somewhere, as I was very disappointed.

Staff messed up our order 4 times...

So disappointing. Went in for fixed price buffet. Starters: Honey ribs full of fat and grissle. Satay chicken was dry and tasteless. Duck pancakes also had no taste. Seaweed was awful. My partner tried to eat some but I gave up after literally one spoon of see weed. We didn't make it to main courses just paid and left and went to another restaurant . Won't be back. Such a shame as staff were pleasant. Very y simple setting and ambiance too

Love this place. One of our group is gluten tolerant and the owner was very accommodating. She didnt go home hungry. Food is excellent. Definitely recommend.
