As our youngest is enjoying the natural beauty of Tasmania and our eldest is deep in degree studies and earning a crust, simultaneously, in Manchester Christmas and New Year/Birthday for 24/25 were destined to be just MrsC and I to share. Fortuitously a gap appeared in our eldest’s hectic schedule and we agreed to meet up, halfway, in Birmingham on the day after New Year’s Day. As she has good friends in the city she was able to recommend past venues for lunch; of the options given we chose Tamatanga for both its vegan choice and its proximity to Birmingham New Street station. We all met up around 11:45 wandered round the shops than ended up at the restaurant around 1:00pm. It was relatively uncrowded when we arrived but filled steadily as we enjoyed lunch. Front of house was efficient and warm and guided us to a table set for three towards the rear. It was explained that, similar to Wagamama, the food came when it was ready rather than conventionally. For us this wasn’t a problem; probably/possibly because it was so lightly populated all of our food arrived timed to suit us all three eating our ordered mains at the same time. Both MrsC and eldest ordered the lunchtime special of curry/main and drink for £15; MrsC going for a veggie byriani/sparkling water and our eldest opting for chickpea curry/sprite both supplemented by the addition of a generous basket of excellent light papad and three interesting pickles. I went for the Thali (wryly smiling at the price whilst remembering previous excellent examples in Suva, Fiji and a Vadodara street side stall that both came in at a princely round pound apiece). MrsC and Eldest both voted their meals top notch. The thali was definitely generous; comprising my chosen curry ( Bangin’ Baigan), rice, papad AND a small vegan naan alongside a single pickle and then a further four curries/dal. All were interesting if a little over spiced and it would have been nice to have the selection identified before tucking in. As one had kidney beans I’m assuming that was “Dal of the day” and was a form of Dal Makhani (veganised?), there was another unsuccessful dish of battered cauliflower florets in a chilli sauce with the cauliflower overdone and the batter made less than crispy by languishing in the sticky sauce. The other two curries were both on the hot side but tasty enough. Probably my mistake/expectation but the curry I chose, as it highlighted a Smokey flavour, was expected to be in the style of Baingan Bharta from the Punjab but, though pleasantly tasty had neither the smoky punch I was hoping for nor the texture. The salad/slaw was a tad meagre and disappointing too. It’s a good vibe in the restaurant and there’s a buzz about the place as it packs out but we were still able to enjoy a lengthy catch-up chat. I’d recommend you try it but couldn’t qualify where it sits in the hierarchy of great Birmingham curry houses though certain it’s a good new addition. If we went again I’d follow the lead of our eldest and take the meal deal over the Thali. Good atmosphere/vibe just need to up the ante on the food.

Food, service, experience, cleanliness and location... all 10/10. My partner and I were served by Seimarah and what an excellent host she was. Seimarah made us feel relaxed, explained the menu and gave some great suggestions to suit my partner's dietary requirements. The homestyle chicken curry was very tender and very tasty. The keratin lamb curry was delicious. Oh and the three dips that come with the poppadoms, just wow! We will definitely return and hope to be served by Seimarah again.

Tamatanga used to be a favourite of mine, but recent visits have left a very sour taste! The portion sizes have reduced drastically and prices have increased. I get one or the other, but both don't go hand in hand. Quality and taste of food has decreased also. I always have the railway cabin lamb. Last two times the meat has been chewy and tough, as if it had been sitting around for a while. The sauce was ok, but had one spice which was overpowering. Not the usual standard. Both recent visits have been extremely disappointing. That said the service has been ok and the atmosphere is nice too. Sometimes the wait can be a bit long but suppose that's to be expected at times. Unfortunately may not be visiting again anytime soon.

Amazing Indian food at great prices. Highly recommend the Tamatanga thali and Lamb chops- which even though is listed under starters is a full meal in itself accompanied with a small bowl of dal and rice/naan/chips. Service by Neha was impeccable who was very attentive towards all our needs. Will definitely visit Tamatanga again. :)

Fantastically designed restaurant. We went for an early dinner and it was quite busy. Despite this, our food came out extremely quick and the wait staff checked on us regularly. I had a nice window seat in the corner where I could people watch. I’ve had better Indian food but the meat was succulent in the curry.

I have visited Tamatanga Birmingham multiple times. However, my recent visit on Saturday evening left me deeply disappointed and frustrated. I had booked a table for 9:30 PM for myself, my mum, and my aunty, hoping for a relaxed evening with good food. Unfortunately, the experience was anything but enjoyable. Upon being seated, we were immediately pressured to place our order for starters. While I understand it was a busy Saturday night, just 2 weeks before Christmas, the service was shockingly poor. We ordered 3/4 dishes, but instead of being served together, they arrived one by one within five minutes. This left us awkwardly waiting for the rest of the food to arrive, which was frustrating given that we were sharing. As soon as we finished one plate, it was hurriedly removed from the table, and the staff insisted we place our main order. It felt incredibly rushed, and we hadn’t even had a chance to properly look at the menu. This pressure to order food escalated by 9:55 PM, I finally placed our order, after being approached at least 8–9 times by the waitress and once by the manager. When the mains arrived, they too came out one by one, and the entire meal was served by 10:05 PM. We finished eating and by 10:25 PM, the waitress brought the bill and informed us that the table was needed, and that it was time for us to leave. The entire experience felt like we were being shoved out of the door as quickly as possible. This was particularly disappointing given that we had travelled a long way to enjoy what we hoped would be a pleasant meal. Instead, we were made to feel unwelcome, hurried, and ultimately dissatisfied. The food, which I usually enjoy, was also not up to its usual standard. If we had been given the opportunity to relax and enjoy our time, we would likely have ordered more food and drinks. Instead, the rushed and impersonal service left a sour taste in our mouths. I doubt I will be returning to the Birmingham branch; we were better of going Nando's.

The food was delicious! Although being an Indian, I would say the spice level was not upto my personal standards but the overall taste was worth every penny. Ambience: Ambience is like any other restaurant. It is quite good. Music plays constantly so it is not noisy due to people. Washroom was clean, odourless and well maintained. Drinks: Oh drinks were beautiful! Yeah you read that right.. Beautiful! See the pic in the review. Food: It is definitely worth every penny. The Amritsari Fish was crispy on the outside but melting in my mouth on each bite! Definitely one of the best fish starter I had. Thali was quite delicious. My wife enjoyed it. Naans were soft and buttery. Loved every bite. Can work on spice level though on request.

The staff is incredibly welcoming, helpful, and friendly. The restaurant is very clean and the atmosphere is great! Regarding the food: Butter Chicken: The portions are generous for the price (£18). While the flavor is good, the chicken pieces could be smaller and the gravy-to-chicken ratio could be adjusted for a more balanced dish. Overall rating: 3.5/5 Lamb Biryani: This dish is more accurately described as a Kabsa, as the rice is cooked together with the lamb gravy, unlike a traditional biryani. Additionally, the meat used doesn't seem to be lamb but rather mutton or beef. Overall rating: 3/5

No fuss indian street food. Quick but excellent and friendly service. It's very busy but tables turn around quickly so my 25 min wait was actually less than 10 and i enjoyed a drink at the bar while waiting. Food was very good, tasty, hot, nice and fresh. It is a chain so while the food is consistently good, it lacks that wow factor that you sometimes get at independent restaurants...and it's quite pricey for what it is, but i wouldn't say ridiculously so. I'll definitely return when i'm next in the area, it's perfect for dining alone due to the busy atmosphere and quick turn around.

Amazing experience! My friends and I booked a table for 10 at Tamatanga for a birthday meal and we had a really lovely time. We received a warm welcome at the door and were given a little time to settle in before we ordered. Lizi did an amazing job of looking after our big table despite how busy the restaurant was (it was quite a lively Saturday evening). All of the staff were really friendly and attentive throughout the meal— especially when they brought out a cake & candle for our friend to make the night extra special! Our food was delicious and came out so quickly, as each plate arrived as soon as it was ready. As a vegetarian, I was really happy with the selection: the menu listed vegetarian and vegan options in their own sections which made it really easy to compare all of my options. There was also a dedicated gluten free section, which must be very helpful. My Saag Paneer was incredible, as was the side of Chaat Bombs that I split with a friend (the sides were a great size for the price). I've added a photo of the Delhi Lamb Curry which my friend really enjoyed. Alongside our food, there was a range of fun cocktails to choose from— all with great presentation— while the soft drinks were similarly varied and refreshing. We were so full after our desserts, despite walking into the restaurant absolutely starving, and our bill was really reasonable. I can see why it was so busy! Thank you to everyone at Tamatanga who worked so hard to make our birthday meal special, we'll be looking back on this happy memory for a long time :)

The food is delicious but the service isn't. From the moment we walked in we didn't feel like very welcomed. The tables were very close to each other. And on top of your food they charge you extra 10% which isn't mentioned on the menu or beforehand. If you're looking for going somewhere to get food with family, I don't think it would be the best option.

Waited 25 min for table not bad for a Saturday night! Vast menu options even non alcoholic drinks pretty good! Super tasty food, had to wait quite a lot longer for one dish than the rest but I guess that’s what happens when it’s all freshly made. Really very cramped seating, tables close together, all packed constantly, not great for disabled access at all. Menu stated that a tip will automatically be added for groups over 6, so as a 2 we didn’t expect it to be automatically added. Didn’t feel the service was remarkable enough to warrant a tip over £7 to be honest but it was far too loud and busy to ask to have this removed, usually I’m one to tip a few quid happily. Would probably go back when it’s quieter in the day time

Went to meet a friend , unfortunately I was running late as there was 3 ambulance, 2 fire engine and a police car as I was coming into Birmingham so I'd had to veer of my turning for the car park and come back on myself. My friend was on the phone to me as the server was asking what she wanted to order and i was t even sat at the table, id have liked to have been given a chance to look at the menu myself . However my friend had ordered and we sat in a window seat which was nice. Would say the tables are pretty close together and people were talking loudly given we were talking Iver the people next to us. Have to say the chicken tikka rice and peshwari naan, were well presented and at a reasonable price. The server asked if everything was ok , and the food had only been put on the table, i uadnt even tried it!. The food did taste lovely though, lots of chicken , good size portion would be tempted to go back if I'm in the area. I'd say the only thing that I'd recommend is for the servers to relax, not everyone wants to rush their food experience.

We had the thaali and the lamb curry which was excellent. As a Malaysian Indian i've always been abit skeptical of Indian food in the UK but this definitely hit the spot for my south indian palate - the food was proper spicy and they even had sambal potatoes as part of the thaali which I loved. The only thing was that when we put one of our dishes that we were done with on the empty table beside and apologised to the waiter cos our table was getting really crowded with stuff she gave us an angry face and snatched it off and went off to complain to her colleague abt us which was a slight sour moment. One suggestion is maybe let us have two different cocktails for the 2 for 1 cocktails. We'd be more interested in ordering more if we knew we were getting variety.

Myself and my partner went to this restaurant during our short stay in Birmingham. It was by far the best food we ate during our stay. Full of flavour. The staff were very friendly and provided excellent service. The food was incredible. I cannot recommend this place enough.

Loved our lunchtime visit. Great range of choices for the vegan and gluten free diners in our group. Really tasty meals, generous portions and very friendly & helpful staff. Thank you so much.

Been here several times and it never disappoints. The staff are amazing, attentive and super friendly. My friend and I got caught up chatting, probably far outstayed our welcome but they were so welcoming, and even brought us a drink whilst they were cleaning around us and told us not to rush! Food was amazing - always try different things and not been disappointed yet. I'll be back :)

Tasty food, a chain so not as authentic as some Birmingham curry houses but still really really good and worth a visit

A very popular Indian restaurant in the centre of Birmingham, near the grand central station. Food was very flavoursome and tasty, a great place if you enjoy spicy food too. A good variety of vegetarian options, but there could be more.

Service and atmosphere beautiful, food was mid - should be on the levels of dishoom, but on the levels of no flavour

Wasnt really my cup of tea. Someone took me here, I didn't choose it myself because I don't eat in these sort of places. It's an Indian style restaurant and I prefer Pakistani and middle eastern cuisine. The food itself is halal but they serve alcohol in there so it smells like a pub. That kind of put me off my food. Some islamic scholars say if the environment is haraam and then so is the place itself. I refer to a Hadith which states if you sit with them then you are part of them. So I won't be going 🔙.

The place is very nice, and I have nothing negative to say about the staff—they were courteous and even served tea after the meal. I did find the food lacking a bit of spice, as I was expecting something more akin to Indian cuisine. However, the quality of both the food and service was still quite good. I have pending things to try next time
