I visited the restaurant a couple years ago, food was nice then, however service was awful, and unfortunately that hasn't changed. I went last week, the staff just didn't seem like they cared/were very passive aggressive when I explained I had allergies. Really sad as it could be a good restaurant if management was better. Only writing this because the allergy situation was quite stressful for me as I didn't get much help with what I could and couldn't have - the staff didn't seem to know the allergens.

This was my first time visiting the Birmingham branch of Tamatanga. I can’t lie, it was a bit disappointing. The food was perfect, same as any other Tamatanga I visited which is always great. Food came out fast and I can’t fault that at all. My issue was more of the service. The other branches i’ve been to the staff have gone above and beyond. Checking in, seeing if we needed top ups of drinks, if foods okay etc. but the birmingham staff were more bothered having little gossip session than being attentive to tables. I can’t lie this had put me off visiting here again.

Attached is a picture of the butter chicken dish from their menu, I appreciate that the curry comes with an accompaniment of either rice or naan and a little side salad. The dish is seasoned well and the presentation is pleasing. The service was phenomenal and its a cute restaurant. Value for money is great here.

We ordered papadoms, vege briyani and fish curry. The restaurant looks trendy and service was great. The chutney that came with the papadoms was very nice, you can tell that’s it’s freshly made in store not from jars. Briyani came with a big pot of yoghurt on the side. And plenty of veges in the rice. The amount of fish in the curry was decent. Not a hot curry, but a mild one. We opted for the naan option and it came with a decent sized one.

I’m writing to express my disappointment following a recent visit to your restaurant on Friday, 9th May. I had a table booked for 7:30 PM, but unfortunately, I was delayed due to traffic near Paradise Circus. Realising I would be running late, I began calling the restaurant five minutes before my booking time to inform the team. However, the phone system did not allow me to speak to anyone directly, instead directing me to use online services. I attempted to call again with the same result. Upon arrival—around 10 minutes late—I tried to explain the situation to the lady at the front of house (tall with blonde hair), but was met with an unwelcoming and dismissive response. She pointedly told me my booking was for 7:30 and remarked that their phone had been “ringing all day,” implying that I should have been able to get through. She looked at me in a stern way and also added that she won't be charging the deposit on my credit card. Her tone came across as sarcastic and unhelpful, which added to the stress I was already feeling from the journey. This was my third visit to Tamatanga, and I had brought new friends along based on my previous positive experiences. Unfortunately, the reception I received set a negative tone for the entire evening, and it impacted my ability to enjoy the meal. As a result, I chose not to pay the service charge. I sincerely hope this feedback is taken constructively. I recommend that the front-of-house staff—particularly the lady I dealt with—receive training in customer service and hospitality to ensure other guests aren’t made to feel as unwelcome as I did. Kind regards

I discovered tamatanga during my stay in Birmingham, we had to wait about 15min to get a table which I found reasonable as we didn't have a reservation, the food is good and very tasty the atmosphere as well and the service too. The chicken is Halal but not mentioned, I had to ask the waitress for confirmation before we ordered.

Wasn't too sure what to order. The table next to us had a TAMATANGA THALI so we ordered the same with the Hot Chicken and Hot Lamb dish. Wow wow wow was this nice. Pretty much up there with the best curries I've ever eaten. So much flavour and the right kind of Heat/Hot. I'm from Essex so please please open one down South. You really must try this restaurant. Lovely atmosphere and lovely people. Young Karry- Anne (I think) was suburb.

The food was good, come out promptly. Our waitress was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu, my only remark that some of the servers were dressed a bit inappropriately for working in an establishment that serves food.. (a skirt/dress at thighs high is way to short) But the food portion is regular so I'm disagreeing with other reviews saying that are small.

Biryani was undercooked rice mixed in a bland watery seasoning and didn’t come with any curry sauce/gravy as is standard at an Indian restaurant. The lamb curry bowl was good however. Both dishes came with a side salad which I was happy about until I put it in my mouth and was overtaken by its bitter and ‘un-washed’ taste. Service was disappointing, got seated pretty quickly and the host was friendly but we were without a doubt forgotten about afterwards as I watched them go up and down, attending to and cleaning all the surrounding tables as diners came and went and for 20 mins before I had to waive somebody down to take our order.

I will say all that's true.... The food was brilliant. Not too spicy not too bland just perfect for children and adults to order n try out different dishes. However... The treatment they had us because of have a table full of children was beyond ridiculous...! Waitresses eye rolling even when my children were being well behaved. Waiters constantly hawking on us to keep an eye on children not starting a fight or something.... If you really have the preference or age limit please be clear about it before serving customers their tables. Children at our table(including my own we had 4 in total) didn't throw food, throw around other tableware or cutlery, used loud voices or bad speech. Ate their food as well mannered as possible.... I'd probably order take out if I have children under 10 here.

I visited Tamatanga and overall had a decent experience. The service was good and the atmosphere was nice and welcoming. I ordered the home-style chicken curry — it was fine. I also tried the peshwari naan, which I didn’t enjoy much; it had too much coconut and was overly sweet for my taste. Probably wouldn’t order that again.

Went to Tamatanga yesterday( Saturday evening ). It is my 3rd time coming here. Was busy so was told have to wait around 25 mins. Didn't mind as this was to be expected on a busy Saturday. There is a nice seating area by the Bar to wait. Atmosphere and Vibe inside really good. Seating/tables and restaurant in general super clean. Food: Ordered the Bang Bang Chicken starters/Small plates and these were really tasty. Got the Chicken wrap with Tama-Chips. The wrap had plenty of large bites of chicken in it but I found it to be quite dry and not full of much flavour at all which was disappointing. Really enjoyed the Tama Chips which I had last time also. Service: From ordering, food is served quick and waiters check up on you so great service. Overall, I had the same experience as last time I came: Starters good and enjoyed their Tama Chips but the main dish was just lacking flavour and was a waste of money tbh. If I do come back again I will come and order a variety of items of their small plates menu only with their Tama Chips.

Visiting with a few friends, my first time. Menu has a lot of food and drink choice, 2-4-1 cocktails are priced reasonable. As someone who does not deal with spice well, it would be helpful if the menu indicated the spice level of the dishes. I opted for the Thali, which was good value for money, and I liked that there was a selection of different dishes. Service was very quick, although the lady serving us had only been with the venue for 3 days she was very knowledgable about the dishes. My only issue is the service charge that is automatically added to the bill. I feel it should be a customers choice whether they tip or not.

The restaurant has a great atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, which made for a pleasant dining experience. However, I was quite disappointed with the food. I ordered the Thali for £25, expecting a flavorful and well-balanced meal, but unfortunately, every dish on the plate was bland and lacked seasoning. The curries, in particular, had no depth of flavor, which was surprising given the restaurant’s otherwise positive reputation. For the price, I expected much better. While the service was excellent, the food fell short, and I wouldn’t return based on this experience.

I recently visited Tamatanga in Birmingham, and it was a pretty good experience overall! The restaurant has a vibrant, laid-back vibe, making it a great spot to enjoy flavorful Indian street food. I ordered the thali, and it was absolutely delicious! The variety of flavors was impressive, and every dish on the platter was well-prepared with great taste. It’s a perfect option if you want to try a little bit of everything. The portion was generous, and the food tasted fresh and authentic. The atmosphere was lovely—colorful, lively, and inviting. However, the waiter wasn’t in the best mood, which was a little disappointing, but it didn’t take away from the overall experience too much. The food definitely made up for it! Tamatanga in Birmingham offers an inviting atmosphere with modern decor, a clean environment, and friendly customer service. The meal deal, priced at £15, is reasonably affordable for a city-centre establishment. However, while the setting and service are commendable, the food itself leaves much to be desired. The dishes feel distinctly pre-prepared, likely reheated rather than freshly made, resulting in a lack of vibrancy in both texture and flavour. The quality of the meat is particularly disappointing—overly fatty, with an abundance of gristle that makes for an unpleasant dining experience. The chicken, in particular, has an off-putting taste, raising concerns about freshness. Despite its appealing ambiance and fair pricing, the subpar food quality overshadows the positives. Unfortunately, it’s not a place I would revisit.

As our youngest is enjoying the natural beauty of Tasmania and our eldest is deep in degree studies and earning a crust, simultaneously, in Manchester Christmas and New Year/Birthday for 24/25 were destined to be just MrsC and I to share. Fortuitously a gap appeared in our eldest’s hectic schedule and we agreed to meet up, halfway, in Birmingham on the day after New Year’s Day. As she has good friends in the city she was able to recommend past venues for lunch; of the options given we chose Tamatanga for both its vegan choice and its proximity to Birmingham New Street station. We all met up around 11:45 wandered round the shops than ended up at the restaurant around 1:00pm. It was relatively uncrowded when we arrived but filled steadily as we enjoyed lunch. Front of house was efficient and warm and guided us to a table set for three towards the rear. It was explained that, similar to Wagamama, the food came when it was ready rather than conventionally. For us this wasn’t a problem; probably/possibly because it was so lightly populated all of our food arrived timed to suit us all three eating our ordered mains at the same time. Both MrsC and eldest ordered the lunchtime special of curry/main and drink for £15; MrsC going for a veggie byriani/sparkling water and our eldest opting for chickpea curry/sprite both supplemented by the addition of a generous basket of excellent light papad and three interesting pickles. I went for the Thali (wryly smiling at the price whilst remembering previous excellent examples in Suva, Fiji and a Vadodara street side stall that both came in at a princely round pound apiece). MrsC and Eldest both voted their meals top notch. The thali was definitely generous; comprising my chosen curry ( Bangin’ Baigan), rice, papad AND a small vegan naan alongside a single pickle and then a further four curries/dal. All were interesting if a little over spiced and it would have been nice to have the selection identified before tucking in. As one had kidney beans I’m assuming that was “Dal of the day” and was a form of Dal Makhani (veganised?), there was another unsuccessful dish of battered cauliflower florets in a chilli sauce with the cauliflower overdone and the batter made less than crispy by languishing in the sticky sauce. The other two curries were both on the hot side but tasty enough. Probably my mistake/expectation but the curry I chose, as it highlighted a Smokey flavour, was expected to be in the style of Baingan Bharta from the Punjab but, though pleasantly tasty had neither the smoky punch I was hoping for nor the texture. The salad/slaw was a tad meagre and disappointing too. It’s a good vibe in the restaurant and there’s a buzz about the place as it packs out but we were still able to enjoy a lengthy catch-up chat. I’d recommend you try it but couldn’t qualify where it sits in the hierarchy of great Birmingham curry houses though certain it’s a good new addition. If we went again I’d follow the lead of our eldest and take the meal deal over the Thali. Good atmosphere/vibe just need to up the ante on the food.

Great service, food not amazing anymore. They give plenty of food, then a tiny nan. A turkey better off not giving one at all

Food, service, experience, cleanliness and location... all 10/10. My partner and I were served by Seimarah and what an excellent host she was. Seimarah made us feel relaxed, explained the menu and gave some great suggestions to suit my partner's dietary requirements. The homestyle chicken curry was very tender and very tasty. The keratin lamb curry was delicious. Oh and the three dips that come with the poppadoms, just wow! We will definitely return and hope to be served by Seimarah again.

Tamatanga used to be a favourite of mine, but recent visits have left a very sour taste! The portion sizes have reduced drastically and prices have increased. I get one or the other, but both don't go hand in hand. Quality and taste of food has decreased also. I always have the railway cabin lamb. Last two times the meat has been chewy and tough, as if it had been sitting around for a while. The sauce was ok, but had one spice which was overpowering. Not the usual standard. Both recent visits have been extremely disappointing. That said the service has been ok and the atmosphere is nice too. Sometimes the wait can be a bit long but suppose that's to be expected at times. Unfortunately may not be visiting again anytime soon.

Amazing Indian food at great prices. Highly recommend the Tamatanga thali and Lamb chops- which even though is listed under starters is a full meal in itself accompanied with a small bowl of dal and rice/naan/chips. Service by Neha was impeccable who was very attentive towards all our needs. Will definitely visit Tamatanga again. :)

Food was delicious and authentic Indian taste though a little pricey. We had to wait around 25 min for the table as it was busy. Paid parking available in front. Toilet was clean.

Very busy, very bright and very vibrant. Been eyeing up this restaurant for a whole and it didn't disappoint. Had to try its lunch deal 15 quid for a drink, curry of your choice and rice or naan breads. Delicious I had a sweet potato chicken coconut curry called kerala, mango juice and garlic naans

Fantastically designed restaurant. We went for an early dinner and it was quite busy. Despite this, our food came out extremely quick and the wait staff checked on us regularly. I had a nice window seat in the corner where I could people watch. I’ve had better Indian food but the meat was succulent in the curry.

I have visited Tamatanga Birmingham multiple times. However, my recent visit on Saturday evening left me deeply disappointed and frustrated. I had booked a table for 9:30 PM for myself, my mum, and my aunty, hoping for a relaxed evening with good food. Unfortunately, the experience was anything but enjoyable. Upon being seated, we were immediately pressured to place our order for starters. While I understand it was a busy Saturday night, just 2 weeks before Christmas, the service was shockingly poor. We ordered 3/4 dishes, but instead of being served together, they arrived one by one within five minutes. This left us awkwardly waiting for the rest of the food to arrive, which was frustrating given that we were sharing. As soon as we finished one plate, it was hurriedly removed from the table, and the staff insisted we place our main order. It felt incredibly rushed, and we hadn’t even had a chance to properly look at the menu. This pressure to order food escalated by 9:55 PM, I finally placed our order, after being approached at least 8–9 times by the waitress and once by the manager. When the mains arrived, they too came out one by one, and the entire meal was served by 10:05 PM. We finished eating and by 10:25 PM, the waitress brought the bill and informed us that the table was needed, and that it was time for us to leave. The entire experience felt like we were being shoved out of the door as quickly as possible. This was particularly disappointing given that we had travelled a long way to enjoy what we hoped would be a pleasant meal. Instead, we were made to feel unwelcome, hurried, and ultimately dissatisfied. The food, which I usually enjoy, was also not up to its usual standard. If we had been given the opportunity to relax and enjoy our time, we would likely have ordered more food and drinks. Instead, the rushed and impersonal service left a sour taste in our mouths. I doubt I will be returning to the Birmingham branch; we were better of going Nando's.

1st time ordering a take away with this place .Delivery man was very smart and polite however I ordered a korma and butter chicken ,korma was nice but butter chicken tasted exactly like the korma ,in fact sweeter than korma like a bag of sugar was in in .I phoned to address this problem and was told that butter chicken does taste like that .That is not true in the slightest ,butter chicken is more savory so my daughter had no dinner as she dislikes coconut .I was offered no curry in return and they just said they will inform the chef .I even sent email to just eat with pics and reciept and was refused refund for my meal .Will find a different restaurant who knows how to cook a butter chicken .

Great bean selection for a decent cup of coffee and non-specialty/roastery coffee cafe. It is recommended if there's time left to catch the train.

Distinctly average. Usually order the paneer tikka so went for paneer biryani for a change. Ordered mild for husband, slightly hot for me - the biryani was exactly the same and only the sauce differed. Biryani too hot for husband. Very limited amount of paneer in the dish. I had tarka dal instead of the veg curry - it was very thin and very salty.
