Masalla Merchant in Birmingham

Went for a meal with family. Unfortunately the staff don’t know much about vegan food so couldn’t direct us properly, the menu was unclear too. An allergen menu should really be available. One waiter was extremely rude to my sister and very passive aggressive when she simply was asking what she could and couldn’t eat. However, Noah was SO helpful and a real pleasure! He saved our experience and deserves a raise! Food was fine, would like to see better vegan option

Family run for over 20 years. The staff are amazing, really customer focused, and friendly. The restaurant was 50% full of loyal customers by 7pm. Mains are around £10-£12. I had my usual chicken biryani. Jahl Bhat, it was seriously hot, tasty, and full of flavour. They dare you to try this special dish created by their own chef. Keema Naan, Prawn and chicken jalfrezi. Bring your own booze. Nice tray of treats to end the meal followed by a FREE brandy or baileys. Attended with my disabled friend who found the restaurant easy to navigate. A wonderful evening.

Lovely food, good ambience and amaazinggg hospitality. Food was very mild without much spice and lovely flavours! A must visit restaurant!

Definitely won’t be going back. The staff were rude including pushing one of our party and saying “move I’m trying to take orders”. The food didn’t come out together so we sat with our mains without any rice or naan, and we were charged for food that we didn’t order nor was ever brought to the table. When questioned, we were told “well that’s what I wrote down” without any acceptance that they may have screwed up. They served poppadoms and chutney without asking if we would like it so we assumed it was included but then were charged. Overall poor experience which is unfortunate because the food was actually very good.

This place is great, the food is great, the staff are warm and friendly, this place is a class act beginning to end, we will definitely eat here again.

Just ordered a takeaway from here and wow absolutely incredible from the food to the guy who delivered it, absolutely amazing stuff will be ordering from here from now on 10/10!!

Ate here this evening with a friend. Staff were friendly and gave a warm welcome to all of the customers, new and old, they couldn't have been more attentive! I'm coeliac so always a little wary of being 'glutened', but the waiter serving us knew his products well and was able to advise me which dishes would be gf and reassure me. Would thoroughly recommend! Food was delicious, very generous quantity (we couldn't eat it all!), beautiful fresh decor with good lighting and as I said before, the staff here are lovely 👍

I like this place even though the food is hit and miss. If you go for one of the 'classic" curries it should be good. Some of the more unusual choices or lesser known dishes can be not so great.

I called up and gave them my opinion on my £30 in the bin. Stale poppadoms, uncooked chips, and the Currys was absolutely disgusting. Mine was a tub of oil. My wife's Tikka Masala was worse. Tasted like a tub of sugar. Only decent thing was the Naan bread. To be fair they offered to rectify but I declined. No thanks! We went and got a KFC instead. Never again!

Great for large groups. There were four Birthday parties going at the same time. The food was very nice the staff were helpful. They only sell soft drinks so bring your own or buy it from a local shop 2 minutes walk away. Ps 2 bottles 330ml coke cost nearly £6 this was the only downside

I have ordered a number of takeaways from here, most recently last night. Every time, the delivery has been prompt, the food warm, and of exceptional standard. The price is excellent, and far more reasonable in comparison to other local establishments - the quality better as well. The complementary drink and starter was a lovely touch, and shows how the New Masalla Merchant value their local customers. Keep up the top work!

It is Curries, not Curry's. Learn to spell it before cooking it. Nothing but disdain, contempt and resentment recieved. Pretended to be the curry place I was looking for and said no one had turned up from church so I missed our church party. Was looking for an entirely different place. Nonetheless, the staff are poised for contempt, this experience hasn't put me off the food but the entire race. We will never be equal in their eyes. Save England while you can. Stop funding the destruction of our once fine country. You are welcome. Humbug! With immeasurable resentment and denunciation, Bahh! Humbug!! We have dined st The new massala merchant and had takeaways for years and the food and service is always second to none. The staff are really friendly and so attentive so I am surprised at a couple recent reviews stating otherwise.

Lovely food with lots of selection. Clean toilets with a sofa which is handy for when it’s busy. Good selection of starters and mains and thoroughly enjoyed my meal.

Honestly amazing, unparalleled service and great quality food, if you’re debating it just do it.

13 of us went for Xmas lunch and it was an absolute disaster. They obviously booked too many in and did not space the timings right. It was over 3 hours by the time we had our main and our 4 year old had fallen asleep by the time it came out. It was also apparent that they spent more time attending to the regular customers, giving presents to their kids but ours did not get any. This was not fair! We all paid the same amount at the end of the day. Never again!

What an incredible experience. We booked in for the Christmas lunch for the late sitting and I’ve never been happier to have eaten out. The staff were so incredibly attentive making sure we had everything we needed for a comfortable experience. The food was exceptional, I could have said boo to my lamb shank and the meat would have fallen off the bone, my wife opted for the duck and was so succulent and flavoursome. Whilst my lad went for the lamb balti and having been before, knew exactly how good it was gonna be. All the staff worked exceptionally hard to ensure everyone was well looked after, that everyone was having a great time and for me, made for a perfect Christmas Day. You guys were awesome! Can’t wait to come back again, as you guys really are the best curry house around!

The jewel in the crown of Indian restaurants in Stirchley. The staff are welcoming and friendly but not overbearing. The food is fantastic, great selection and generous portions at a very reasonable price. Ample parking around the corner.

Tonight (3rd November) my partner and I visited your establishment with the intention of dining with you for the evening. Unfortunately we were met with appallingly rude and discriminatory service from the moment we entered. After being met with an unwelcome look from the greeter and guided to a table in the corner, we were shocked to be told by two members of staff that we would not be able to eat with you unless we kept our jackets on. We can only presume this was due to our tattoos or choice of garment, neither of which could be seen as offensive to any fellow diners. I have seen from your social media that you frequently allow others with similar clothing and tattoos to dine with you without being instructed to keep themselves covered up. There is also no ‘dress code’ stated on your website or anywhere in the restaurant that you may have decided to apply to your premises in recent months. My partner and I have been repeat customers with The New Masalla Merchant, both in person and via takeout delivery, for years. Neither of us have ever witnessed this discrimination based on our appearance before, and as such we shall no longer be dining with you. I left shocked and disappointed by the attitude you have shown us as customers tonight, and I feel compelled to inform my friends and family about this experience, as well as anyone who may ask for my opinion on where to dine in the future.

I believe that 2 recent reviews are there to deter diners from going and are malicious. I've been a customer for many years and find the staff go out of their way to provide an enjoyable experience. The food is excellent. I wouldn't take these negative reviews seriously

Nice as always go here on a regular basis with my Grandson never had a bad meal and great service.

This place has been recommended by a few people so we tried it on a busy Saturday. We sat down for 20 mins and had to ask for menus, service throughout the night was very slow. We were there nearly 3 hours! Starters were nice, chicken tikka and the kebab were very good, lamb a little tough. We weren’t a fan of the curries, murgh e azam had no spice at all, mrs had a recommended prawn dish which she didn’t like. We tried a couple of other curries in our table but wouldn’t choose these either. Naans were nothing to shout about. We loved the big menu selection so would try something else next time! Unfortunately disappointed with this visit but will give another try!

Had a terrible 😪 experience at this restaurant, was my first time visiting the establishment. Onthe eveing of 21/10/2023 our table was booked for 7:30 om.I was there with a group of friends a party of 14, we ordered our drinks and then starters. I ordered Mussels in garlic sauce and the rest of the table ordered poppadoms. The drinks were brought to the table and them the poppadoms, my starter however was never delivered. Soo.....ages later, when the rest of my party has finished their poppadoms. The server comes back to get orders for the main, that's when I ask him where my starter was, he proceeds to accuse me of eating poppadoms and states that's why he never delivered my starter. We argue back and forth with me saying look at my empty plate does it look like iv had anything to eat, I was just waiting for my starter. He takes the rest of the orders for mains including mine. When he returns with my starter it has the words, " I LOVE FOOD" written on the plate with the sauce. I'm in shock at this point, he stands there with his black teeth, snickering and laughing and turns and leaves. I was soo humiliated and in such shock I tried to play it off as if it was OK i didnot want to ruin the night for one of the girls who was celebrating her early bithday, and be further humiliated by drawing attention to the situation. In my shock, i did not take a picture, i regret not doing so, but that was something i did not want to remember or have any memory of. suffice to say the rest of the night was no fun for me at all I wanted was to spend some time with my friends and have dinner. I barely touched my food. As I was going to pay, he again tries to add the poppadoms to my bill. This establishment has very very rude staff. If you're looking to have a fun evening out with good service, I'd pick somewhere else.

Terrible. Take away order, sent wrong food - insisted it was correct even though it was all meat (we are vegetarian). Refused to correct or refund. Avoid avoid avoid!

Outstanding service and food. We received a really warm welcome. The food was excellent and the staff were just lovely. They went above and beyond. We will be back.

What a lovely meal on a bank holiday Monday evening. We were greeted with smiles upon our arrival and seated in our own little booth for four. Within a minute we had been asked if we would like some poppadoms whilst we perused the menu. We ordered soft drinks and starters and when they came it was a lovely touch to see that the sauce accompanyibg the bhajis had been used to write little motifs on the plate: Good Food, Good Vibes, I ❤️food and Eat Well. The food was flavoursome, prompt and plentiful. The service was friendly and thoroughly exemplary. We were even offered a complimentary digestif at the end, which really was the icing on the cake of our thoroughly superb evening.

It has been a while since we crossed the threshold of The New Masalla Merchant as we have tried most of the other local "established" restaurants within a 5 mile radius. With covid and it's aftermath, we were keen to re engage with our love of curry. We went on a quest to try and find an Indian restaurant serving as authentic a curry as we could. Having grown up in the early 1960's and having my first curry in 1971 it was going to be a task and a half to find a decent enough curry to satisfy my taste. After spending hours and many ££'s trolling around the local established restaurants which mainly served brown soup which they dared to describe as madras or pink slop which was supposed to be tikka masalla (not my choice) we revisited The New Masalla Merchant. It was our 40th anniversary so what better choice of food than a curry! Lets face it if it was our 1st anniversary, we'd have skipped the curry, had a few drinks and celebrated in a more energetic way back at the ranch! We took our own drinks as only soft drinks are served. We were greeted with the same friendly smiling faces we remembered pre covid which was reassuring and took our seat on the left hand side "alcove" tables which are only a quick sprint to the loo's. (you'll all suffer the same plight in the end) I had a Sheek Kebab to start which came out sizzling on a platter as it should be served with the kebab surrounded by sizzling onions. The waiter brought 2 plates with salad and garnish and the minted yoghurt in a seperate bowl. DELICIOUS! absolutely DELICIOUS! With a decent enough space between courses, the main course arrived - Chicken and vegetable balti madras with extra garlic, vegetable pilau rice and a garlic naan. Now not being a lover of garlic (LOL)................. The food was a delight to eat, everything cooked fresh and the curry had the madras heat I loved. It was not anything like the curries we had back in the 1970's which is a shame but having tried many an "Indian" restaurant this was far better than I expected and far exeeded anything locally. I don't think I'll ever find the curry taste that we had back in the day but this sure is a fantastic alternative. Service was great and the waiters friendly, helpful and chatty. Restaurant clean, well decorated. Could we please have a bit of Ravi Shankar playing in the background? Loved It and we'll be back!

Love this restaurant they are reasonably priced but the food is nice aswell. And they always look after you . Whatever I order , they always put extras on the take away bag . I wouldn’t use anyone else. I have done once or twice but have learnt better the devil you know . Won’t get better 🫶👍

Food quality is very poor. I ordered a biryani, what they served is nowhere near that. If you never had Indian biryani, then don't judge biryani from their food. They can't cook. Waited over an hour for food.

Ordered a prawn sag balti and naan. Was nice enough. Had to wait a while to be seated even though we had booked. This is a large restaurant which left me wondering if they had enough staff. Had to remind the waiter a few times on drinks as he kept forgetting. Soft drinks only here, no alcohol although you can bring your own. Restaurant is in a pretty grotty part of town. No car park.

The food was delicious and the staff were amazing, very welcoming, kind and efficient. They even presented my granddaughter with an ice cream with a candle on a decorated birthday plate. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Me and my missus ordered last a meal last and we were absolutely blown away by the quality of everything. We will definitely be ordering from here again. They also sent us a small portion of a chickpea curry for free which was a lovely little surprise. Thank you very much. 10/10

I have never had such a terrible plate of Indian food in my life. I ordered the Chicken Shashlik Bhuna but asked for it without the Bhuna sauce. The dish came with a heavy sauce which was a very vivid red. It tasted disgusting. I had to return it. They gave me a chicken tikka to replace which was also pretty inedible. The chicken was very tough and not fresh. I will never go back there. The staff were slow to get drinks too. I was one of 7 and only 2 of our party had nice food. The rest all said their food was bad.

There were 7 of us who attended for my birthday Saturday 25th March the restaurant wasn’t overly busy when we got there (6pm) we were given plenty of time to look through the menu then they took our order, starters arrived fairly promptly, I had chicken shashlik which was nice but very very salty others within our group said similar with other starters too. We then we’re kept waiting almost an hour for our main meal to come, there were other large groups that came in after us who were receiving their main meals before us, my Balti was lukewarm, infact the whole groups mains arrived in dribs & drabs, the nann breads the same, my husband had to send his meal back as it was cold, so not sure if they literally forgot about us as all our meals were not very hot at all. We eventually asked for the bill to have to wait about another 20 mins so when it did arrive we tried to pay, a wait again, in the end we went upto the till to pay. Not the best service at all rather disappointing especially as it was for a special occasion.

We went to the New Masalla Merchant with high expectations having heard very good reviews from customer's who had visited before the pandemic. Our expectations were met and more. We were offered a warm welcome and provided with attentive service that wasn't oppressive - just right. The extensive menu was helpfully explained and we ordered a variety of meals. The food came in good time and both quality and quantity were excellent. Sadly, we had no room for a dessert! The restaurant offers great value for money in a good setting along with some 'interesting' background music! Hope we can go again soon.

First time visiting this restaurant tonight. Absolutely mind blowing. Food was fantastic, sooooo tasty. Best Indian I've had in a very long time. The restaurant itself is impeccable. Staff are very attentive to detail. Very knowledgeable and friendly. This is a must go if you haven't been there before. Myself and my friend have decided to make this our weekly go to now.

Booked a table for 13 for my mum’s birthday. Easy booking process on the website and the table was confirmed within a couple of hours by text and even had a courtesy call to say that it was all booked in. When we arrived the staff were very welcoming and helpful when we needed to add an extra person to the party. They had put balloons and a birthday banner up by our table which I thought was a lovely touch. Very attentive and allowed us to order separately as four groups which made it easier at the end when paying. The staff were helpful making suggestions when ordering as an allergy sufferer. Food came really quickly and was delicious. Good portion sizes including the children’s meals. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will definitely be returning in future 🙂

Great curry's with bring your own booze

I've had a lot of Indian takeaway's in my time living near Stirchley but the one I ordered this evening had to be the worst one I've had. Ordered via Uber Eats for the first time from this restaurant as I saw the reviews on the whole were excellent. I always get a chicken biryani from wherever I order (usually Balti Bites) and what I ate tonight was definitely the least flavourful I've ever had. Even something cooked from a jar would have been much better unfortunately. The food was plentiful and hot which is always nice, however, if it doesn't taste nice then that doesn't really matter. Sorry to say this isn't somewhere I'll be ordering from again.
