This restaurant’s main attraction is the amazing view across to Taransay. The food was ok but not memorable. Maybe in choosing the haddock and chips, we went for the wrong thing. The chips weren’t fresh but rather frozen fried off the catering delivery truck and though well cooked and nicely presented, it wasn’t the absolute best we’ve ever eaten. They weren’t especially good value either. More off putting was the long list of dog rules sellotaped to the tabletop. We were accompanied by our well behaved retired guide dog and were seated at one of the two available dog friendly (or should I say dog tolerant) tables. This really isn’t necessary. The service was friendly enough. So, yeah, good and bad points. However it gets four stars for the outstanding views and the excellent service.

Wonderful view of the coast, super friendly, polite staff, clean facilities. Delicious granola with yogurt and berry compote and a bacon ciabatta.

Pros: lovely view, casual, pleasant service by jovial young people, very good food, bright atmosphere, clean, good sized venue and parking. Cons: extremely expensive (it’s casual canteen style and our lunch for 4 children and 2 adults was £86), because it’s an island and service times and availability is unreliable there are times (like a Monday when we went) where other options aren’t readily available and we felt they took advantage of this with the prices, my husband said his take away americano was undrinkable. I do hate to write a bad review as there were a lot of positives which I tried to include. But when you feel you’ve been price gouged, it is hard to leave with a positive feeling.

Delicious food in an incredible setting. The staff were very attentive and friendly. There were 6 of us and 2 had the Thai curry, 2 of us had the chicken tagliatelle special, one of us a burger and the other had fish. All beautifully fresh with very generous portions which meant sadly none of us had space for a cheeky pudding! Next time on Harris I would definitely go back.

We loved this visit to the community operated restaurant with an outstanding location. The lunch was excellent and catered for all dietary needs. Special mention to the maker of the fabulous cake maker. Delicious. Also very good and friendly service.

This restaurant has views to die for. Although it was fully booked, the manager fitted us in early and even allowed us to take our dog. We shared a delicious starter of smoked salmon and beetroot, followed by the Talla na Mara house salad and a fish and chips. All delicious. Then we could just roll down the hill to the wee campsite below. Heaven.

We were looking for dinner on a Monday when many of the island’s restaurants are closed and we found this through an on-line search. We are so glad that we had booked as during our meal, five unbooked parties were turned away. We had an excellent welcome despite arriving half an hour early and were seated right by the window with a spectacular view towards Taransay. The restaurant is situated in a modern community hall with enormous picture windows which lead onto a large deck overlooking the Sound of Taransay. All the food was excellent - generous portions and beautifully cooked. Afterwards we had our coffee on the deck outside. When we visited the west coast of Lewis last year, we ate at a very well known restaurant near where the ‘Lewis chessmen’ were found. The view from Talla na Mara was comparable and the meal was far better. It was also about half the price of last year’s despite 10% inflation! So yes, I thought that Talla na Mara gave very good value. We would have liked to return for another meal during our stay but sadly dinners are fully booked for the rest of the week although I don’t think that booking is so essential at lunch time.

As it was my wife’s birthday we decided to go for dinner at this restaurant. The view from the front of the restaurant is amazing looking out over the Straits of Taransay onto the island The meal was excellent I had the pork belly and my wife had the beef both beautifully presented and perfectly cooked. We both had the Cranachan, again which was lovely would definitely return to this restaurant when next in the area Thank you for Judith and her team for an excellent evening

Beautiful location, friendly staff. We were a group and had ordered our lunch ready for arrival, but also ordered coffee and cakes at the end of our meal 🙂. Table nicely set up, staff attentive. Relaxed and community feel.

We have had 2 lovely meals at The Talla Na Mara. On the first occasion we had haddock which tasted really fresh and was the best fish and chips I've had in as long as I can remember. The second time my husband had beef which was really tender, and I had gnocchi which was lovely. The soup was good on both occasions, and the crannochan was divine. The portion sizes were good, and the staff friendly and attentive. The restaurant is spacious and comfortable with the most wonderful view over the sea and beach. It is highly recommended, and we will be sure to return next time we're in the area.

I am a Tour Guide and a Tour Agent specialised in local produce in Scotland. During the Easter Break I took my family for a half family holiday/half business oriented Fam trip to the Outer Hebrides and I was so happy to discover this restaurant at the very last minute. Under new management and located inside the Local Trust Building, you can tell how much passion and effort Judith and her team are putting into their new business. I was really impressed by the attention to detail, the locally oriented menu, the service and the presentation. I am looking forward to send over plenty of my Italian and Spanish clients exploring the Outer Hebrides for a tasty dining experience and to come back during Seafood Season 🤩

Our B and B host suggested this restaurant, and since having brunch there, also had lunch and dinner different days afterwards. Judith the manager has things wonderfully organized even though the new place has been open only a couple of weeks. She is a delight, and even remembers us from the previous visit. It feels like personal service. The food reflects the local traditional food with a beautiful presentation that is a feast for the eye as well as the taste buds. AND the view is as good as the food. Below the restaurant is the Atlantic Ocean and a long white beach. Both stretch as far as you can see. Truly a must.

We stopped here in our motorhome, there are a number of places with electric and showers etc. We didn't know we could eat here. We decided to eat in the restaurant and it was tremendous, great food, good drink selection and the staff couldn't be more welcoming and attentive. We would recommend this place to anyone, great food and fabulous views.

Don't be mislead by the name 'Bistro' and the pictures about the café and the menu including cakes and seating areas. It is not a bistro any longer and you must not stay inside. We mistakenly rode here (by bike) way before the ferry would depart to have a break in the 'bistro'. However, they only sell snacks and coffee to go. As a consequence, we had to wait 3 hours outdoors (the ferry terminal waiting room offers shelter as alternative). The shop and the lady running it are nice though!

What a great visit! Smooth and flavourful coffee, amazing range of attractive baked goods - I went for the red velvet blondie - and a friendly welcome too. Busy little place, seemed to work for families as well as me with my book in the corner. Thanks so much.

A good cafe for breakfast and lunches serving basic fare ( everything with chips !) and home baking. Open from 8.30 am until last food orders at 3 pm. I had a bacon and black pudding roll which contained a substantial slice of Stornoway black pudding. Waited 20 minutes for it despite the cafe being almost empty. The cafe has an outdoor deck with views over the sea and it is adjacent to the Kilbride campsite. It has free WiFi.

Mac and cheese, whilst nicely served lacked flavour… no salt and pepper on table. Waitress delightful. Partner had the steak, nicely cooked, asked for mustard… none available.
