Berneray Shop and Bistro in Eilean Siar

Don't be mislead by the name 'Bistro' and the pictures about the café and the menu including cakes and seating areas. It is not a bistro any longer and you must not stay inside. We mistakenly rode here (by bike) way before the ferry would depart to have a break in the 'bistro'. However, they only sell snacks and coffee to go. As a consequence, we had to wait 3 hours outdoors (the ferry terminal waiting room offers shelter as alternative). The shop and the lady running it are nice though!

Stopped for a "fancy" meal while cycling the Heb Way, great decision. Staff were lovely and food was excellent

Absolutely fantastic shop with a great selection of food and other useful things. Service was brilliant and really friendly - lovely coffee too! A very good pit stop after a walk on the beach.

Outstanding spot - we were staying in Berneray and came into both the bistro nearly every day (as well as the shop). Food was excellent and the service was always super friendly. On a sunny day, we were able to sit outside. Can’t fault it at all!

We had a lovely lunch sitting outside in the sunshine (with the dog). The menu was varied and the food was good quality. We would have returned the next day, but unfortunately the bistro doesn't open until 10am and that was too late for us to get something to eat before our ferry when we left!!

We were staying on North Uist and enjoyed 2 lunches at the bistro. The weather was good enough for us to sit outside - it's a lovely location! Service was welcoming, menu offered a good choice, food was served fairly quickly. Coffee was good too

Perfect stop off if you're in Berneray

Nice little shop, and they do evening takeaways too. Had a pizza on saturday night, really nice and a reasonable price too. Recommended

Stopped for coffee and cake but didn’t stop long the waitress was in a hurry for us to leave very unwelcoming service. Called back again and had Take away fish & chips great very tasty

Arrived at 2.35pm to be told lunch stopped being served at 2.30pm. When we asked if it was possible even to have a bowl of soup - this wasn't possible either, which was disappointing. The next and last ferry of the day was at 4pm. We ended up with cake and coffee, which was nice - then we watched a baked potato and a burger and chips being served to the next table. They must have got in, just before the deadline!!

Visited the Bistro twice when staying in North Uist, excellent food & also enjoyed their Friday Fish & Chip night. Staff were very pleasant too. The next door shop was also well stocked. For the size of this place they are doing something really good, we wished we had had more time to visit again during our stay.

We arrived on Berneray late afternoon and had booked the bistro prior to travel. Saturday we were told is pizza night which was fine as they also did gluten free options. The seafood special was superb with a super base and the gf option had loads of choices and was very tasty. Service was excellent and two staff dressed up as pizza slices to surprise an elderly customer and danced around to “that’s amore” by Dean Martin. Sounds cheesy but it was very funny.

The food was good, enjoyed the location by the sea - seals sightseeing spot close. I would recommend this place if passing through north north Uist. Also it can be very busy so I would reserve if you want a table

We went here for dinner and we got the last spot, we were really lucky! I would definitely recommend to make reservations via phone before. It was so worth the visit, the food is freshly made and absolutely delicious! The store across the hall has everything (and when I say everything, I mean it). It was a lovely experience, the healthy dinner was absolutely perfect and we got stocked up with more than we needed via the store. Thank you!

Dropped by for some rolls after visiting west beach, Ruaridh was helping in the shop (one of the owners who is usually doing the fishing for the fresh seafood in the restaurant) what a legend of a guy, so friendly. Can’t wait to come back and try the food as we couldn’t manage this time. Great wee shop with a lovely bunch of people running it!

This was a brilliant place to spend time before boarding the ferry to Harris. We had breakfast rolls and traybakes and it was all fantastic - I was sorry we couldn't have stayed to enjoy the lunch menu! We also used the shop which has an amazing selection for such a small place (including a great selection of non alcoholic grown up drinks!!). The lady behind the till was great with the kids so they were delighted too.

Nice stop if your waiting for the ferry. My bacon roll and coffee were nice.

Lovely place to get some food, rest and restock for the rest of your trip. With a good wee market and a great outside deck (we were lucky to get a bit of sun!), it serves great seafood sandwiches.

Great place for lunch - good selection of food.

I waited for one month to give review in order to look at what occurred to us in a neutral light. After cycling 100km my dad and I were looking forward to a cold beer at the bistro. The weather was sunny and nice, we saw the wind protected terrace already from the road and our spirits got high. The red haired owner (?) asked us for a reservation, which we did not have. In that case she found the table furthest at the door which had almost no view. Outside sitting was forbidden. She actually said so! Because she was alone in the restaurant (not true because we saw also a man working there) and it was forbidden to take anything outside by ourselves. Strange, but we were thirsty after 100km on the bicycle and wanted to order one cold beer at the table she gave us. Alas, it was forbidden to only drink beer. We must eat something as well. We were ok with ordering one portion of starters. In that case she would give us also only one beer. One portion of food - one beer. She also did not sell us cold bottled beer from the shop because it was forbidden. I did not know that Scotland is such a sad country where so much is forbidden - or is it only the owner who is sad? Addition to response: I‘m a sales manager and travel to foreign countries 50% of my time. What is this discussion about? We friendly asked for cold beer, you rudely explained the Scottish law, finally we left with warm beer because apparently Scottish law also forbids to sell cold bottled beer. I experience a lot all around the world, the law may be the law, but please trust me that your behavior is out of the ordinary.

A quick pit stop pre ferry but definitely wins the award for the best lunch stop over 10 days in the O.H. - Lebanese Shwarma wrap if I remember correctly - DELICIOUS! A little flustered with service for a group but good more than made up for it. Thank you!

Very friendly staff and delicious food! The menu is great and also offers enough vegetarian choices. It's a shame that we only discovered this place shortly before departure on the way to the ferry.

A nice bistro in the center of the village. Very nice staff, you can buy here a wide range of products from grocery to souvenirs.

A:lovely place with very nice lunch options. Very Friendly and clean. The shop next door offers the most you need on the island. A nice drive up to Berneray and further to the Eastbeach. Pretty little villages or houses. Colours of the water unbelievable.

Great that this little bistro was still open as many other local facilities all closed at the end of September. Great choice of lunch dishes, fresh local lobster a bonus . Coffee and cakes also available. Staff friendly and helpful. Definitely worth a stop off here.

We stopped here for a late lunch, on an unassuming Saturday amid the drizzle. So glad we did! The lovely waitress recommend the lobster hoagies, and they were outstanding! We decided to share a portion of chips, even though neither of us are particular fans, but these were absolutely the best chips either of us had had! Decided to push the boat out by having a couple of glasses of Prosecco too, coz why not? Sat there, using the WiFi, with our lobster & chips, hearty hoagies, fizz & fortitude, feeling like absolute champions! Delicious coffees to round it all off with too. Highly recommend 👌🏽

Wow..... what can I say about this place. We went for dinner and lunch. The menu is to die for and the staff are so friendly. On my first trip they had the wheelchair ramp ready for me and couldn't have been more helpful . The shop is well stocked and they even had a vegan magnum ice cream...I am slightly allergic to milk etc so for the first time in ages I was able to share an ice cream with Clare. Can I suggest that the bistro maybe looks at a vegan/dairy free ice cream range aswell,this would be a great addition. Booking is advised as this place is so popular and you can see why. Brilliant x

Fabulous lunch here. We hadn’t booked and turned up at lunch time. We were lucky to get a table so I’d recommend booking! The staff were very helpful, friendly and efficient. The food was served quickly and with a smile, which is always nice. We had lobster roll and a smoked salmon, lemon and dill brioche, along with some fries. It was all very fresh and delicious. As an added bonus, they also served local gins! All in all, a brilliant, impromptu lunch.

First trip to Berneray, sunny day & abfamily ice-cream stop at the Berneray shop/bistro. Unfortunately no ice-cream on the cafe menu, so a quick stop at the shop. 4 ice creams and £30 of wee bits and bobs later, we sat out in the almost empty outdoor cafe seating area to enjoy our frozen treats. Almost instantly we were very rudely advised that unless we had purchased at the cafe we could not sit at the outdoor area. We took our Berneray shop purchases and sat in the car to eat our ice creams before heading home. Really disappointed as we had heard many nice things, a policy rethink would make this a much nicer experience.

Easy to book and with a great, friendly welcome. The food was excellent, decently priced and was also served quickly. The staff were friendly and readily on hand to help with refills etc. The only issue we had was listening to other customers moan about getting a cheaply priced take away coffee and expecting to also use the restaurant facilities. Some people! We will be back!

Take away vegan deep fried cauliflower & chips was DELICIOUS! Absolutely loved it. Friendly service, quality food, good value.

We went into the sit in coffee area and were told to go into the shop to get our coffee and a person of our family ordered an oat milk latte as we got our coffees back we walked away as our friends were in line behind waiting to order as we left she said to them 'anyone who orders and oat milk latte is a problem' after that we weren't too bothered but we went to sit on the outside tables and were told to get off because the sit in price was different to the takeaway price which was ridiculous as they told us that we couldn't sit in, would not recommend stoping here as they were rude and unwelcoming.

Apparently ordering oat milk makes you a problem customer. Spent over £20 on coffees from the shop as dogs not allowed in cafe which is fair enough. Surprised and disappointed to be told abruptly to leave the outdoor seating area due to the price difference between the shop and the cafe. The outdoor seating was completely empty. No service with a smile in this establishment.

Simple in style but not in terms of cooking. A balanced menu with lots of choice. Everything beautifully presented. Artwork on the walls. The attached shop was open as long as the bistro was serving.Just brilliant.

We stopped while cycling the Hebridean Way. The food was good - we had baked potato and soup and cakes. The service was friendly. The adjoining shop sells a small selection which is useful for campers.

We were told the fish and chips would be good and they were truly the best we’ve ever had any where. Highly recommended. Good value pleasant environment with lovely artwork. Genuinely friendly and cheerful staff who couldn’t have been more helpful.

We stopped off while touring the islands. Excellent menu, caters really well for vegetarians and vegans. Lovely homemade cakes and great coffee! Pleasant, clean surroundings. Highly recommended!

Waiting staff were rude and overheard swearing about our group arriving without booking a table. Only wanted teas and coffees. Made to feel unwelcome and awkward when a few of the group wantws to drink their drinka bought in the adjacent shop at the outside tables. Not a great hebridean welcome. Dissapointed.

We popped in here for lunch on a sunny day and we were so glad that we did! We had the chicken shawarma wrap which was super tasty and not too heavy considering it was a hot day! The service was wonderful and even though they were quite busy, they couldn’t do enough for you! The little shop alongside the cafe is also great!

Stopped by on the way to West Beach and was pleasantly surprised by the vegan options for lunch! Chose the buddha bowl which came with vegan feta - lettuce, cucumber, sweet potato, chickpeas, tomatoes, green goddess sauce topped with seeds. Super tasty and a good...

For the UK Berneray is pretty remote so finding a place with this quality of food is amazing. Lovely surroundings, good atmosphere and full at 7.30! Where does everyone appear from? Food was superb in every detail from start to finish. Not overpriced either.

We booked this in advance for an evening meal as had read reviews online. We were so glad we did. Lovely menu choice with fantastic fresh seafood, Good choice of wines and beers also. Service excellent. Not to be missed!

Miserable 'welcome' when we arrived, waitress was muttering under her breath about table reservations. Also in the time we were there she was rude to another party who arrived late and to the other waitress for getting the table number wrong. Not a pleasant atmosphere....

Had a lovely evening meal recently. Everything beautifully cooked, hot and well presented in a restaurant which was full, but no one made to hurry, as arrival timings were staggered. Definitely recommend.

WE had just missed the ferry and had a few hours to kill so walked up to the shop and bistro. So glad we did. The staff were welcoming and the food was great - just what we needed. We even managed to have home...

Although it is the only place to eat on the island it is a super place to eat, offering coffee and cake, breakfast rolls, lunch and evening meals. Our meal was tasty and there was plenty of choice, not just the usual offering.

After a long walk we visited the Berneray bistro for a coffee and we were delighted what was on offer. The coffee was excellent and the quality of the baking was first class as was the service.

Happy People here. Although we had the "pizza evening" it was nice to stay and eat. We took the fish-pizza. As dessert the chocolat breadpudding. Lovely!

We had the weekly Sea Food pizza, with smoked salmon, tuna and langoustines. Very, very good! As dessert the chocolate breadpudding with ice cream, these kind of dessert should always be there. Excellent and joyfull service, good beer snd a nice whisky to finish. Excellent!

Great local shop Sadly the Bistro was closed . Purchase some of the best shortbread we have ever tasted, only to find that it was made in Our home county of Lancashire.

Lunch on a cold, wet April day but a warm welcome. Lunch of pulled pork wraps with chips and salad, followed by generous slices of cake did the trip. Service was excellent.

Not good service, came off the ferry and wanted two cups of coffee to takeaway, you would think I was asking for their first born child the way they acted. Avoid dont deserve the custom.
