Tall Ship in East Hampshire

Nasty fish, rubbery jelly like skin left on fish and barely and white fish. Chips looked liked they had been reheated and greasy.

Travelling back from Poole after visiting family we decided to have a chippy supper. So we stopped at the Tall Ships and as we have eaten there before we knew what the food was like. The food was excellent hot well cooked and full of taste and flavour. I had saveloy and chips my mother had steak and kidney pit and chips. the chips were golden crispy and very tasty. the saveloy was spicy and very nice. all in all a very pleasant meal and i would suggest this place to any one who wants a chippy.

We were looking for something to eat- pubs in the area close at 6pm (yes, 6pm) on Sundays- some even earlier. Looked on line and found this chippy. Lovely, friendly staff serving us. Offered salt and vinegar on f&c. Quick service. Would highly recommend as fish was great (cod) and chips were crispy and tasty Picture shows my empty box

I am a regular user of the Tall Ship for cod and chips. I have always been completely satisfied, over a period of many years. I use the telephone ordering service and collect the order at the requested time - No Problem. I rate this as more than Five Stars !!!!

I preordeded fish chips, peas & curry sauce. Got home & not the usual grease all over paper you sometimes get. Fish tasted fresh & batter was crisp as were the chips.Credit to the person doing the frying! Will definitely be using again. 😋

We eat here quite often and it’s always decent. Golden, well cooked chips. Knocks spots off anything else in the local area.

A month or so back I used this chippy. All good apart from the savaloy was way over cooked and had exploded - a common complaint looking at these reviews. Ruined the meal funnily enough. Tried again this evening. Large chips were definitely a small portion, didn’t taste particularly nice and the battered sausage had a very thin layer of batter. Won’t be back anytime soon.

Have been going once a year for 10 years hoping it would improve as it is the only chip shop in village. Unfortunately worst visit yet. Food in the past has normally been ok except for chips which are always greasy. This time I ordered haddock, chips and Saveloy. As per usual chips were not edible and were slightly undercooked (not sure how this is even possible) they were so greasy you could pick up a handful and squeeze. The Saveloy was so overdone in the microwave it had exploded and looked like it was missing its top half. It was dry and inedible. Fish was also dry and disappointing. Would recommend driving 5/10 miles to next village and getting chips from them. Never had such bad chips from anywhere. Am not going to give them another chance as I am tired of wasting my money and feeling sick after. They should be shut down. Staff are nice and friendly though.

I was a bit shocked opening the box.... this is a medium cod, it’s about 10 cm! I cannot imagine a small cod, maybe it would be a prawn instead... Maybe it should be renamed now, The Small Ship, for a small fish.

All the negative reviews are a bit of a mystery. I've been using this fish n chip shop for about 18 years and very rarely get a bad meal. Very rarely someone new behind the counter hasn't quite learned to get their act together, but its the exception rather than the rule. Maybe there is such a thing as a bad day of the week to go. In busy periods the wait time can be 20 minutes, but its not excessive. I will continue to use them. I can think of a Devon and Cornwall based fish n chip shop I use once or twice a year that gets 5 stars.

I really don’t know where the bad reviews come from. We are regular visitors and the quality of food and service is excellent. They will cook to order and are very efficient.

Stayed overnight locally and called in here for Fish and Chips. Thoroughly enjoyed a portion of fish and chips each and would certainly call in here again if passing through. Friendly staff and quick service.

Had Cod & Chips while staying in Four Marks on Monday. Was cooked fresh to order and could not have been better. Fish batter was crisp and the flavour was wonderful!! Highly recommended.

This place seems to delight and disappoint with regularity. Most times we've had great fish and chips, but we've often been left feeling we've gone to a different chip shop.

Taste all round was poor. Chips soggy, cod tasteless. Worste I've ever had and I have been to many. Suspect poor oil condition and bad technique. The cooks vary so you may be lucky and get someone who is a little, and I mean "a little" better. Not to be recommended.

I’ve ordered from here now on three separate occasions when working away from home (out of necessity most of the time, and each time trying something different) and each time the food has been disgusting.Tiny fish portions that taste odd. The chips always taste like they’re old, or are being cooked in dirty oil, I’m not sure which but it’s the only chip shop where I’ve ever had this happen...During what you’d expect to the busiest period (around 6pm) they’ve always got a sorry looking display of leftovers in the counters that look like they’ve been cooked a week before.Battered sausages have hardly got any batter on and taste like they’ve been there for days. Pie crusts are so hard I had to count my teeth afterwards.I have now been enough times to know that it wasn’t a one off and on that basis will not be returning.Can’t help but think they’re very lucky to have a bit of a captive market, as if there were competition near by they’d have to up their game very quickly to survive based on my experience to date.

A few months back on a Sunday I popped round to the tall ship. I used to go every few months over the past seven years since I moved in to the neighbourhood and I live a five minutes walk from them. Anyway, the shop had an unpleasant smell of off fat which was a bad sign. I ordered a large haddock and chips to take home. When I got home I found that the fish and the chips tasted of rancid fat, it was quite disgusting. I’ve not been back, and will never again visit. I’ve eaten fish and chips all over the country over the past 55 years, and never before had food that was this bad.

A friend came to stay, who moved away from the area. Both decided on Fish n Chips, she had never tried the Tall Ship before. Having had poor offerings from Alton (closest to me, and choice of 3), I had previously dropped into the Tall Ship ad hoc several months before. I was very impressed then, so I had no problem in going back again. The large Cod's were beautifully cooked, the chips seemed like they had been double fried, as delicious! Wonderful! Added to easy parking, clean premises, and attentive staff, would definitely recommend!!!!

Went in last night. Service was dreadful. The two girls serving customers were not relaying orders over to the other lady who was cooking the food. Waited ages for my order. People were coming after me and leaving with their order before me. No apology offered.

I am local to Four Marks and have use the shop before. Ordered 3 medium fish and as you can see from photo this is not a medium fish, only a small part of a fish and only half the size I have had before. Sadly won't be using again and would not recommend. Try the burger van or make a trip to Alton.

Have used this fish and chip shop on several occasions recently due to one near my home being so bad. Picked up sausage/fish cake and chips as not eaten all day and on way home. Easy parking 6pm was served by young lady quickly and politely. Wrapped in polystyrene container so still warm when I get home. Does have lots of menu choice which gets bigger each time I visit. Good price as well.

Always good fish n chips freshly cooked and very quick with orders easy parking right outside the shop.

I was hungry after finishing at the gym and thought I’d try this place on the way home. The shop is clean and the oil smells on the fresh side which is a good sign. My large cod & chips were cooked to order. Perfect chips plus cod with a light tempura batter, not greasy at all. Reasonable too at £6.50. An impressive fish & chips takeaway.

Lovely Fish and Chips - you have to wait a while as everything is cooked to order which means lovely and fresh. The batter is nice and thin and not heavily greasy. Very tasty!

Chips were terrible. Fish and pie generally okay but the chips looked and tasted like yesterday's chips. Not sure why they do this as it has happened so many times before. Shame as it is our local. Will have to go to a different chippie next time!

Ordered pasty, fish and sausage with chips, and a gherkin and pickled egg. Firstly got home and no gherkin or egg to be found. The chips were the most rank thing I have eaten in years. They were obviously yesterday's chips re cooked to an inch of its life. Definitely won't ever go back.

Whatever you do, do not get chips from this place. i walked in at dead on opening time thinking i may have to queue and wait for some fresh cooked fish and chips. I was suprised as it was empty, teatime on a Friday evening . Looked at the chip fryer and it was full of chips that looked to have been cooked recently, with stacks of these already cooked . I ordered a large fish and chips and the young lad who served me opened a closed chip warming storing area and wrapped my food up. Got back to local hotel and unwrapped them, OMG they where the worst looking and tasting chips i've ever had in my life. The chips must have been left over from lunch time and warmed up in the warmer. They were chewy, dark brown and wrinkled to say the least and i can still taste the fat in my mouth hours later. Would say the fish was about the same as well. I will never return to that place ever again and advise future customers to check their purchase before leaving the shop.

I'm not usually a fish and chippie person, but I've been three or four times recently on a Friday. I've had the best fish and chips I've had here, crispy chips and nice haddock. Okay it's basic fast food, not very healthy, a bit rich for my tastes, but nice as an occasional treat and fish is good for you.,

As a returning expatriate, in pursuit of that once British favourite fast food, Fish and Chips, my son and I decided to try this chippy in Four Marks with the imaginative name. Unfortunately, it was not the culinary delight I had hoped for. The plaice was dry and tasteless and the chips were almost cold, mushy and rather indigestible. This sort of offering seems to be typical these days in Britain. During my 2 months holiday I tried several local chippies seeking that perfect Fish and Chips, but could not find any that I could recommend. No wonder that McDonalds, KFC, Burger King and Pizza Hut etc. have become so popular. Are we witnessing the decline of the British Chippy? Wake up, England!

The Tall Ships has given us a good fish and chip supper many a time and saved our life on Christmas Eve during a power cut.

I live locally and visit maybe twice a month on average and have done for a couple of years. I've worked out that there is one lady who can fry fish and chips very well and several others that range between average and awful.

... Even better fish. Good, clean chippy with friendly staff and a good selection. Always busy at the weekends which must mean they're doing something right!

We have ordered fish and chips from Tall Ships for at least 8 years now for an annual quiz night with up to 80 covers. The food and service is always excellent ... don't know how they achieve it in these sort of quantities! Thank you yet again!

My first ever visit. Dropped in after playing five a side football and ordered cod & chips. Decided to eat in, the service was excellent and quick and importantly very tasty. Will definitely be going back again.

I have used this fish & chip shop for many years. It's always been good but over the last year or so the food particularly the chips have been really good . I would definitely recommend this take away

A traditional chippy which is a favourite with the family. A local business with great service and good vale for money.

This is an excellent chip shop with lovely food. We had some last week as we had lots of teenagers round for my daughter's birthday. I was amazed how much they ate. We received fast service. Sometimes it can take a while but only because they cook chicken portions to order. Thanks everyone

Quality chips, recent new manager has taken it to an even higher level of consistency - love the double cooked chips.

We moved onto area about 18 months ago and have used the Tall Ship about half dozen times. Very generous portions, good prices and good banter with the people who work there. Perfect friday night treat for the family.

The Tall Ship is a family run business that serves really nicely cooked fish and scrummy chips. They have made a huge effort to double cook them which means the chips are really crisp and tasty. Love them ! Service is good and everything is freshly cooked.

Fish overcooked and dry. Chips very disappointing. Having used this fish and chip shop for many years, over the last 18 months it has gone downhill, we have finally had enough and will not be going there again.

The wait and service were reasonable.However we have visited this establishment on a number of occasions, each time the quality of the food has deteriorated. To the point of my visit on 12/2/17 @ 1915 where it was in fact inedible. The fish was limp and greasy. The chips were like concrete. Never again!

The food is ok, better if it is just cooked and then served straight away, but if it is left in the warming cupboard it's very mediocre. Was very busy when I visited this time and all the orders were fulfilled strictly in order so if you wanted sausage and chips (as I did) it was incredibly frustrating watching the chips just sitting in the hopper and the sausages just sitting in the warmer because the 3 orders before me were fish and chips and the fish wasn't ready! Consequently the chips were limp by the time I finally got my order and got home. A very long half hour wait that definitely wasn't worth it!

Used to use this place a lot but gave up. Quality used to be variable but OK but became terrible. Limp greasy chips, dry grey greasy fish. Even on a busy evening when food should have been freshly cooked. Many better places around.

Freshly fried cod and chips, plus vinegar & salt, and 30 minutes later hunger sated, smile on face, and contentment. Best fish & chips for ages. Thanks to the Tall Ships Team

This is a good fish and chip shop, what more can I say? If you live nearby, do try it and see what you think. Oh, and there is seating inside too.

I recently had a takeaway from this shop and found the food to be great, the chips especially were delicious, i have always used this shop and staff are efficient and polite, i would highly recommend this shop

It's a basic fish and chips nice food, nice people an option to sit down although most people takeaway. Not too long to wait & average price.

I have used this shop off and on for numerous years and I've always found the food to be of a good standard. Staff are polite and efficient but be prepared to wait on a Friday as it can get busy !

I went in around 7pm on a Sunday, the queue wasn't too big and they looked to be getting everyone's food ready quickly even though only 2 of them were working. I was greeted at the counter and the girl who served me was very polite while i waited for my order. The food was cooked perfectly and the size of the portion they gave me was far larger than any other restaurant i've been to. Overall i had a pleasant experience going into the Tall Ship and i would recommend this to anyone just passing by it.

We always get our family fish & chips from this take away and are never disappointed. Freshly cooked food, polite staff and good value for money.

7:30 on a Friday night and we expected a busy shop and a wait. What we didn't expect was inedible food.

It took twenty minutes for them to produce 1 x sausage. The service was terrible and the chips, well, they were like eating dry cardboard.

I purchased some take-away chips at lunch time as I was very hungry. The shop was busy with passing trade. The staff were friendly. The cost of the chips were average and the portion size was average.
