Takayama in Ipswich

Went to eat with a friend early Friday evening - the place was buzzing ! Great atmosphere. The food was delicious and reasonable priced and the service was good

Had been very much looking forward to trying this restaurant as a fan of Japanese cuisine. However I found the dishes very much hit or miss it was either really good or awful …. The tuna sashimi was exceptionally glutenous and not a nice texture at all and not from what you expect when ordering Sashimi, the tempura veg were massive slabs of vegetables and the batter was left excessively oily so it was like having a mouth of oil ! The most upsetting part of the meal though was the service was AWFUL …. Not once were we asked how anything was, not one member of staff was smiling and they all felt very unapproachable. Average at best sadly :( On a good note, the Miso glazed ribs were great! X

We’ve been to takayama on many occasions to the old and smaller restaurant, great food and service. Inhad been told that service has gone downhill since moving to the new larger premises and so this seems to be the case We dined on a table for 6 on a saturday evening. The food was delicious in the whole apart from a tough octopus starter. Pumpkin was lovely, sashimi delicious and the duck ramen shows that the chef really knows what they are doing. The problem is all around service and organisation. We had 4 different waiters, one of them told me i had to order all my food in one go because thats how we do it, one messed the drinks orders up all night, and the other 2 were great, but not being organised correctly so didnt really stand a chance of providing acceptable service. When the bill came i refused to pay the service charge due to the lack of, the manager told me i had to as it was their policy on a table of 6, i once again refused to and explained the reasons why. There wasnt an apology so at this point i gave a cash tip to the one waitress who went the extra mile and left. I think the manager was still saying ‘its our policy’ as we left. I was so disappointed in what has happened to one of our favourite restaurants and the lack of any understanding from the manager..

I came here for lunch with a new friend as she really wanted to try the place out. I booked a table for two, downstairs as i use a wheelchair and was seated with plenty of space around me. I decided on chicken katsu curry, my friend the pumpkin katsu curry (tried this and actually really good!). Portion was huge for lunch which was really great - chicken katsu, curry, rice, 3 dumplings and a salad and so tasty. We then did it backwards and ordered the chicken yakitori & korean vegan sushi, both delicious too. The servers were so friendly, helpful and gave good suggestions, as we couldn't decide. There is a lift in this restaurant to get you upstairs and a disabled toilet to, or there was from what i remember! Really enjoyed ourselves and more than happy to return :-) Bonus that you decide if you want it spicy or not as well!

We stumbled upon this place yesterday and came down today for punch. Hadn’t booked as it was Friday lunchtime and I thought it would be easy to get in, but there were more people there than I expected. The food was delicious and nicely hot and the staff were friendly. There was a lift to the upstairs, where the spotless loos are. The owner/chef even came upstairs to show me where the disabled loo was, as I’d missed it. This was a lovely place to have a meal; it almost seems to good to be here in Ipswich, but I do hope it stays….we are already planning which friends to bring here.

This is our favourite restaurant in Ipswich. We have never been disappointed. If possible we time our visits to the town centre to include lunch at Takayama. We usually choose mostly Japanese items and they are well prepared and nicely presented. Recently we discovered the black cod - it's a bit expensive, takes time for them to prepare, but is worth the wait. Interestingly it's a separate species not closely related to ordinary cod. I can't understand the few negative comments on this review site. As I say - we have never been disappointed.

Sadly, this really let us down, especially as it was a treat for my daughters birthday. Service was terrible and the waiter didn't really have a clue about the menu nor was he particularly helpful. The sushi was great and also the bubble tea. A couple of dishes failed to arrive - even though this was picked up, they still failed to arrive before we finished our meal. We asked for the bill, it was delivered, but after a considerable amount of time no one came to take payment. Ended up taking the bill and paying for it downstairs, even then no one seemed to want to take the payment. No apology for the missing dishes either. Such as shame as my daughter was so excited to come for here birthday meal. Really wanted to love this place 😞 guess it just wasn't our night.

Visited here for a birthday meal. This was the first time visiting since the restaurant changed locations. The food and service were amazing. I recommend this restaurant to everyone. We will be visiting again soon.

Was really looking forward to eating here, unfortunately we stood inside for five minutes waiting for someone to greet us or acknowledge us until I went to the bar to ask for a table and was ignored and just told to wait. Needless to say, we turned around and went somewhere else.

Top notch. The service was classy and attentive. The food was stunning. My third visit here. Will be back. The restaurant is nicely done out. Can't imagine there are many better restaurants in Ipswich

Wow, what amazing food! I don't think I have ever had some of these delicious tastes before. The Pork ribs were to die for, so succulent. And although it was very busy mid-week, the service was still very good. One of the best restaurants I have ever been to, highly recommended.

My friend took me out for a birthday dinner at Takayama. This restaurant is actually my favourite restaurant, but I have actually never visited n person before, due to a combination of ill health and disability. The restaurant has excellent disabled access and facilities. There was enough room for my wheelchair, without it causing obstructions. The decor was modern and ambient. I loved the cherry blossom trees indoors. The food was as delicious as always. I had the Sashimi. Our waitress was sweet and attentive ( she also reminded me of my younger self, with her elegant stylish billowing sleeves). The rest of the staff also really friendly, with only one exception, the gentleman who brought the card reader. In fact, he snubbed me completely when I spoke to him 😬 and only addressed my friend, causing me to completely forget about tipping, whilst I pondered why! 🫢 This was a genuine oversight on my part, so I am leaving this review in lieu of that tip. I wasn’t sure if the snub was discriminatory, which did cause distress on reflection. 😔 It may not always be possible, but I would recommend to the management to have the waitress who served collect the payment, so that she can be tipped for her excellent service, rather than sending a rude stranger.

We have eaten here many times before and again in the new premises on St Nicholas St; a much improved venue for this town centre eatery. Food is excellent. A fusion of Japanese and other Asian cuisines. Staff are friendly and well informed and happy to talk you through the menu. The menu is large so there is plenty to try on each visit or just return to your favourites. Booking is essential.

It was the worst meal put of the year so far. Beef was red raw teriyaki sauce was awful and watery. Will never go back.

This really is an amazing restaurant, a real gem in Ipswich. Exceptional food and friendly, discreet service. It is our favourite family restaurant in town. Highly recommended!

Some of the best Asian food we have eaten out of Asia. Both my husband and I have been fortunate enough to travel for business and leisure extensively in Japan and Korea and thought the food at Takayama was fantastic. Fresh, tasty and simply fabulous. I just wish we lived nearer, we would be back every week!

Had lunch here, food rolls both soft crab and tuna and avocado. The bugogi roll was not very nice. Good aubergine with miso as well as eel and tuna nigiri. Service attentive.

This was our first visit to Takayama since the lockdown.We were pleased to see the staff taking the additional safety measures seriously (temperature check before being seated, and tasteful dividers between the tables, plus thorough cleaning when tables were vacated).Food was as good as ever - I like the fish main courses (cod teryaki etc), while my wife revels in the choice of veggie dishes from the main menu and also the vegan menu.On previous visits we had sometimes had 'inconsistent' service - this time the staff were on the ball and friendly at all times. We visited on a Tuesday evening - pleased to see that the restaurant was reasonably busy. It should be - it is one of the best restaurants in Ipswich.

We just had lunch here. Ultra fresh sushi, light tempura, perfectly grilled yakitori all washed down with warm saki and green tea. We finished with a great combo of mochi matcha ice cream and banana fritters. Wrapped up a wonderful meal on a wet Sunday in Ipswich with a smooth Japanese whiskey. Excellent food, perfect ambiance, great staff and very COVID friendly. Would have cost twice the price in London and probably not as good. Best meal all year!

My husband and I are huge fans of Japanese food so we decided to book a table for lunch, and we are so glad that we did. This is the best Japanese restaurant that I have been to in years! We ordered the sushi platters which were delicious - the quality of the fish was outstanding.Customer service was fantastic with excellent Covid-19 measures in place. Tables were separated by screens which actually made the dining experience more cosy and intimate. There are temperature checks, hand sanitiser and a track & trace scanning code at the door. All staff in masks and visors. The whole place was very clean so we immediately felt relaxed and comfortable. We will definitely visit again!

Let me just say this restaurant is the best chioce in Ipswich if you're looking for top quality food, service, and an overall amazing experience. All the staff are amazing but specifically Raj for me was outstanding and polite beyond expectation. Thank you. As of now, its the only place I'll be going.

My husband and I have been here 6 or 7 times we travel from harwich because this place is worth it. The food here is always so delicious, fresh and well presented. Weekend visit from London. We enjoyed our dinner here but felt food wasn’t deserving enough of all the rave reviews on this site, as have had better. Very pleasant service and setting.

Food and service ok. Was excited to come here after lockdown. Social Distancing was good, with staff in masks, tables nicely set out with large dividing blinds. Staff were attentive but different staff asking the same questions around drinks and food. Food was ok, was not as good as our previous visits. Seafood udon a bit of a let down, with tiny and I do mean tiny bits of seafood - probably from a frozen packet and then overcooked to shrink them! Some prawn and umami dishes were good. Overall, just average now. Maybe they have a new chef or maybe our expectations were too high!

We've frequented the restaurant on numerous occasions and been extremely impressed by the quality of the food and the care and attention that goes in to every dish. We were worried how this would translate to take away, the answer is stupendously well! The food was beyond delicious, cooked fresh and arrived steaming hot. It was restaurant quality, delivered to the door, and we'll most certainly be using the service again.

Had lunch with my family and the food was as fabulous as I had remembered before! Super fresh, beautifully presented and great service! Children absolutely loved it and youngest is converted to jasmine tea!

The food was excellent. We had the mixed sashimi which was full of flavour; the tuna just melted in the mouth. For mains we had the beef teriyaki and cod misoyaki. Again both were absolutely delicious. Lots of rich, authentic Japanese flavours. The restaurant felt completely safe in these difficult times and the service was polite and attentive.

We have visited the restaurant several times and it is clearly our favourite restaurant in Ipswich. Very pleased to find they do takeaway so decided to check it out. The food was amazing as always, it arrived promptly, the shashimi was beautifully presented and fabulous as always, incredibly fresh. As a very nice gesture we were also given some fresh fruit from the team. This is still my favourite restaurant and I am so happy to be able to get it delivered during these unusual times. Wonderful.

Absolutely lovely atmosphere within the restaurant when I went in to collect a takeaway order. All staff are meeting requirements for being covid secure, which was great to see.I interacted with 3 or 4 members of staff, all of whom were very polite and courteous.The food was absolutely delicious, and a reasonable price for the high quality and portion size of each item. Overall a brilliant experience and would high recommend this restaurant. Have bookmarked their website as I anticipate ordering from here again.

Purely down to positive word of mouth from many people me and some friends decided to book up for a meal. Don’t be put off by the slightly retro interior and low seats the food is top notch. We loved the appetisers and sushi spread to start. We opted for a different main each to share amongst everyone which is recommended. Can’t wait to return, the sushi was seriously good! As was the highly popular soft shell crab.

Everything was amazing. The staff, decor, ambience and food! The menu is extensive and we were spoilt for choice. Can't wait to go back and try some of the other dishes.

First visit to this restaurant and we were not disappointed. Let’s be honest it’s never going to be Michelin Star but the restaurant was clean and we found the staff friendly and efficient. Vast choice of authentic Japanese and Korean food which was very tasty indeed, There was a good atmosphere and overall excellent value.

I took my step daughter for lunch today. We are the only ones in the family to like that type of food. We had an amazing experience. The place is nice, the staff is professional, the background music takes you far away and is most enjoyable, it creates a proper Asian atmosphere and there is nothing better than when you expect something special and it goes beyond that. We tried both selections of Sushi and Sashimi as that was the purpose of our visit. We were not disappointed. The only thing I would say is that it was perfect. The fish so fresh, everything so tasty, we couldn't ask for better. It is maybe pricey but quality and attention to details based to be at a certain price in a restaurant. We said we will be hoping again, there are so many more things to try

Excellent food and service. Varied and authentic menu. Top value for money - we had 7 dishes between two of us (starter, main, side, dessert) and two alcoholic drinks, all for £52!! Highly recommend!! They even topped it off with a red rose to take away, as it was Valentine’s Day <3 best meal in Ipswich for a very long time!

I’ve only heard good things about the restaurant but our visit last night was very underwhelming and the food well below standard.The good: The place is very nicely kept and clean, the staff friendly and the food well presented. The bad: Waiters did not seem to have had training. Poor knowledge of menu and struggled on recommending food and how to present the sake. Main courses were presented before the end of starters and left on the free table space while we finished. Empty glasses and plates were not removed. Sake was not opened or served. The chilli sauce bottle came in the sort of red squeezy bottle you’d see in a roadside burger van which seemed very out of context to the rest of the place. The starters were fine though the roe eggs were tasteless and all of it a little bland.The mains were really disappointing. Salmon teriyake was a nicely cooked bit of salmon with a only a thin teriyake sauce poured over it and partly served with shredded lettuce - a bok choi or something more authentic would have been better. The bibibmap was stodgy and bland. There were no fresh flavours and it was one of those instances where I would have been disappointed if I couldn’t have cooked it better at home. I love my food and I couldnt find the interest to finish it. I’m sorry to say the food in Waggas is more interesting and vibrant than what we had tonight.

The food was fresh, the restaurant is so clean and tidy. The only downside is that if you don’t book you are very lucky to get a table.

My first visit to this joint. Once through the door in historic Fore Street a warm welcome awaits. Tuna sashimi was superb, the rest of the meal enjoyable and reasonably priced. Service was excellent. We will be back.

It's not easy to cater for a large (13) booking, but it was well handled - we did have to make our choices in advance, but the food was delivered to the table without anyone having a significant wait, and most importantly, the food was lovely, empty plates all round and happy eaters. Would recommend !

Myself and my partner were really looking forward to a meal here. It’s a restaurant that had been on our list to try out for ages! We decided the perfect time to visit would be our anniversary. Were we wrong! We’d had our table booked for 2 at 8:15 for about a week. We turned up a little early and was greeted by chaos behind the counter, no one seemed to have a scooby what was going on. We were told to take a seat for a couple minutes while our table was being prepared (no problems with this at all - it happens) while waiting, two ladies strolled in, barely said their name and said they had a table booked for 8:15 same time as us and we’re seated straight away! Straight away this put a dampener on our night. 20 minuets later still waiting for our table and we’re finally seated, right next to the front door in the freezing cold! Our food orders were wrong and came out 10 mins apart leaving my partner sat there until his food finally came out. We were not offered any cutlery nor were we offered any drinks when sat down. We mentioned all of this to the waitress and she barely acknowledged us at all! It’s a shame really considering the occasion and how looking forward to it we were. I’m not one to complain about these things but the service we received was extremely poor and I will NOT be returning.

Recommended by a friend last summer I decided to book (important).On entering was completely charmed by the layout , the decor and the genuine welcome.The place was packed and everybody seemed to be enjoying themselves. I was quickly and most courteously attended to and as I waited for my lunch to be prepared I watched other diners who were clearly enjoying them selves. All food prepared to order and mine was absolutely delicious. This is a must for gourmets. One notes it is not gluten free. I've been again a few times and the service maintained the same high standards.I was tempted to delete a star because the entrance needs attention as it's difficult for those with disabilities.Management please note.

I have been here so many times now and it never disappoints. The sushi and sashimi is so fresh and light and full of flavour, I would definitely recommend any of those styles of dishes. Great value for money for the amazing food you get. Can’t wait to go back again.

Visited Takayama on Friday 29th November’19 due to the great reviews.The restaurant is nicely set out with a warm atmosphere and pleasant staff.That is where any positive reviews end.We ordered one of our favourite dishes soft shell crab...we were served a couple of scrawny pieces of tasteless crustacean with a tasteless watery dip.I ordered one of my favourite dishes seafood Yaki udon which again was tasteless and watery.My wife ordered the teriyaki chicken with rice.When it was served there were four chicken thighs with the skin still on served on a watery sauce and a tiny bowl of rice.The meals were also lukewarm.I had such high expectations and was delighted that there was another restaurant on par with Aqua Eight but not so expensive.Well I will gladly spend the extra money for a better quality of tasty food as I will not be returning to Takayama.

Service was quick, professional and the sashimi outstanding. We enjoyed our visit so much we returned the following week and will certainly revisit soon.

A lovely meal with fantastic service. If you like Japanese food it is a must. All the dishes we had were excellent, as was the the accompanying wine.

Great selection of various sushi for starter, I recommend the California roll with soft shell crab best we had ever had. The teriyaki beef came on a skillet sizzling away as it came to the table, beautifully pink cut into thin slices with the thinly sliced vegetables underneath cooking in the teriyaki sauce. Such a great flavour, becoming my favourite restaurant anywhere.

I love coming here because I know I am guaranteed an amazing dinner. My favourite place in town - service is great and the food is just amazing.

Deliciously fresh food from a great menu. Wonderful service from all, especially Rajib. So pleased we finally made it here.

A group of us went to Takayama last week and it was hands down the best Japanese and Korean food I have ever tasted! Our entire group loved everything we ordered and a lot of sharing went on because we all just wanted to try everyone's dishes. There were 2 vegans in our group and they were very well catered for thanks to a special Vegan Menu. Do yourself a favour, get down to Takayama and go to food heaven! The staff were absolutely lovely and knew their stuff.
