Mahzen Barbeque Restaurant & Meze Bar in Ipswich

My colleagues, friends and I always love to go to this restaurant to celebrate birthdays and special occassion. They have good food, however we will not come back again for the CUSTOMER SERVICE that we had. It was my leaving do. I reserved a table and made a deposit for 12 people (£10/person), unfortunately 8 people only arrived as people were sick (we are all nurses from the hospital). Even though we consumed food that was good for 12 people and the restaurant was not as full on that night, they charged us £40 for the people who did not come in and said that it was for the reservation. My colleagues spoke to the manager, who was resistant and argumentative, saying that the deposit cannot be refunded or used for people who did not attend. Hence, they will be keeping it. It was quite a long discussion until one of my senior colleagues spoke to him, and gave back our deposit. The waitresses were rude and not understanding either, after the discussion happened they did not stop badgering me about the deposit. One waitress apologised to her friend’s friend, who is one of my colleagues, however she did not stop talking and staring until I left. I had a wonderful and memorable dinner with my colleagues, however it ended up badly on how we got treated on this restaurant when a problem arised.

Great food! The steak was the best I've had in a long time, the chicken Shish was perfect for my hungry boys and the wife thoroughly enjoyed the prawns. The service is attentive and the allergy awareness is good. Parking outside in the lay by is free after 5.30pm. Fantastic little restaurant.

Juicy meat, delish and big servings! They are also on other takeaway apps so you can have your cravings in the comfort of your homes.

Moved from London to Ipswich not long ago, our neighbor recommended Mahzen and I’m glad we did give it a shot. We only had a takeout (2 mix kebab) for 3 people, at the and we couldn’t finish it all. It was amazing, cooked to perfection, really good quality meat, the lamb was so tender 🤤 that no teeth were needed to chew it. Reasonably priced. To be honest better than many Turkish restaurants in Green Lanes London, trust me I’ve must have tried them all. Looking forward to try a seat down meal soon. 💪💪

Found this restaurant on trip advisor to coincide with a couples trip to Ipswich. Mahzan did not disappoint. It tasted like I was back in Olu Deniz eating traditional Turkish food. Well done keep up the good work.

My visitors to Ipswich wanted to take me out for a meal, and I suggested the Mahzeen. They weren't disappointed. Reasonably priced, fabulous food,nice decor, and a polite, friendly vibe. What more can you ask for ? .Well, maybe a reminder of great holidays in Turkey. It's totally authentic and a quality place.

The food was amazing as always, we thoroughly enjoyed our evening here. If you have not been, we highly recommend that you book. The atmosphere was tranquil, music was of good taste and not overbearing. The service was second to none. Top-quality drinks and desserts too. The meze is amazing, the mixed kebab is also amazing. X

OMG! The best, best Turkish food we’ve ever had! The Guvec, king prawns to die for, and the barbecued sea bass were absolutely incredible! Chef’s spices on the sea bass were subtle, yet distinctive and totally memorable! We’re coming back to Ipswich and we’ll definitely be eating here again! Recommend 💯!!!

5/5 food is always fantastic, staff are attentive and friendly. Regularly eat here either with colleagues or customers. Platers for large party’s are impressive as are the mez side dishes

Great quality Turkish food and a good selection on the menu. Highly recommended. If you order chips then ask the waitress to tell the chef not to put salt on them. My chips arrived with far to much salt already on them. There's salt on the table and it should be left to the customer to apply their own amount of salt. Chef, please don't put salt on the chips, how can you assume your customer even wants salt on them?

Excellent food!! I ate at the restaurant few times, food, staff and atmosphere were very good. I ordered a collection for an event at home. The food was amazing, all platters were so nice prepared and packed for collection. Very content.

The food is nice but it’s too expensive, you don’t really get a lot for what you have to pay. The sharing platter is £80 and you pretty much pay for salad and rice, it was ok but won’t be going back.

I don’t very often write bad reviews but I felt this was necessary to warn others. The menu clearly shows what symbol means a dish contains gluten - fortunately I double checked and it was only my 3rd choice of dish (all free from the symbol) that I could actually eat. Do not trust the menu!!! Secondly the service was very slow despite having very few customers. Thirdly one of our mains courses was forgotten which wasn’t good on a family celebratory meal. What food we did have was fine. I can’t remember the last time I didn’t leave a tip but I really couldn’t bring myself to do so.

Have been going over the last 6 odd years since it opened. I expect things to get expensive over time but I am not prepared to get less and less as well. Next they will be charging for salt and pepper. Why start charging for condiments that went with the meat and salad such a the salsa or the mayo dip. The food is still quality and tasty but can’t believe that they would skimp on bread and sell old bread. Most of the flat bread we had was rock hard along one edge.. will think twice about going there again

Discovered this restaurant by accident walking to work and decided to book at the weekend. Was very busy but the staff were incredibly efficient and we were seated and served quickly. The food was absolutely delicious and generous portions. Will definitely have to go back as the menu has so many tasty options.

Lovely Turkish bbq. Good fetoush, lovely mixed meat platter. Decent hummus. Good flatbread. Good borek. Didn't have dessert.

The best food and service and ambiance . But the wine sauvignong blanc from south Africa was APALLING really poor quality at 26£+ a bottle I mean seriously?? I mentioned it to guy at desk he just smiled me away . Dreadful wine but lovely food !!

This was my first trip to Mahzen Barbeque Restaurant and Meze Bar. It was absolutely amazing! The food was outstanding and beautifully presented on the plate. The portion sizes were generous and the staff were friendly and helpful. The decor within the restaurant was really nice and the whole place was very clean. I would highly recommend this restaurant to everyone. You will not be disappointed.

Walking thru town and found this spot while learning some of its history and let me tell you this food was DELICIOUS and had quick service I recommend the meal for 6 great price more than what you pay for

We wanted a meal before an event at the nearby Uni and found that Mahzen is highly rated on Trip Advisor. The rating is well deserved as we enjoyed some great cooking, excellent service in a good atmosphere and a bill that didn't break the bank. If you are meat eaters, the sharing platter is delicious with plenty of chicken lamb and more served with an excellent salad and tasty grains. Strongly recommend a visit of you are anywhere near Ipswich Waterfront.

Enjoyed the meal, had Lamb. Service was really good. Ordered rice with my meal, got bulga wheat, not sure that's rice. I would have liked rice. Should say bulga wheat on the menu not rice. Overall a really great meal, the taste was divine.

Great food, amazing ambiance, great selection of drinks. Mahzen is a gem in Ipswich. We parked at Duke St car park which was a 2 minute walk away from the restaurant. Highly recommend the chicken pirzola and the lamb shish. Huge portions too!

Lovely Turkish grub.. very large portion as well.. we got the £24.95 mixed platter and also Humus which was enough for 2 people.. great taste, great service and the waitress was very helpful as well.. would definitely recommend.

We took dad to mahzen for his 70th birthday food was amazing staff were amazing and the atmosphere was the best, we sung happy birthday and the whole restaurant applauded him which was very moving as we almost lost dad to a heart attack in aug 2023! We went to Mahzen last night and we were a large group. I can't recommend this restaurant enough from start to finish the experience was fantastic. The food was incredible huge portions and a wide variety. The service was also very good! Considering we were a large group everything ran smoothly we didn't have to wait for long periods they are a very organised team.

I had dinner with my boyfriend at this restaurant. Good atmosphere, relaxing music, nice interior, fast service, and delicious food, except for the strong tasting cheesecake. It is one of the best Turkish restaurants.

I came here a few weeks ago with my work team. I had the swordfish, it was amazing! Lots of choice on the menu. Cater well for those who are gluten free/vegan as well! Those who are driving will need to pay to park in the car park across the road.

Visited Mahzen in Ipswich and was thoroughly impressed. The lamb beyti was incredibly delicious and the waitresses were so helpful and attentive. Highly recommend for anyone seeking authentic Turkish cuisine.

Had most fabulous meal here and service was great, would definitely recommend. We had not booked and luckily could be accommodated as even though mid week was busy. Will make sure we book ahead next time in the area.

I love this restaurant so much! Honestly, the meals are so yummy. Since I started living in Ipswich in July 2023 i have been to this restaurant 4 times and not single visit was disappointing. Suggestion - lamb chops or the mixed platter. So yum!

This was the perfect place for a dinner out the staff were very kind and friendly. The food was very good the menu had a good variety of food on the menu also would recommend the plater if you are trying to try Turkish food for the first time and this place was very good definitely recommend

I have been at the Mhazen restaurant for more than 3 times. The last time I was very unhappy with the service . The staf was looking around and needed to call more than 4 times to reach their attention. When I asked for the bill I received just a handwritten paper . Before we left, I asked a member of the staff to pack the food that was too much, and his response was to bring a plastic plate to pack it myself.

Great tasting food and very friendly staff. It was a relaxing lunch out with friends. The decor is also really fresh and vibrant.

It is a fantastic restaurant with helpful friendly staff. The food is delicious, tender jumbo calamari to start, and then a shared mixed platter of kebabs for four people. The meat is top quality and tender with masses of bulghar wheat and salad. The platter saves you £5 per person than if ordered individually. Well worth a visit if you like barbecued meat, we will be going back there soon.

We did not know what to expect as we had not been as a family to a Turkish restaurant for a long time but we were not disappointed. The food was amazing. The waitress did give us some guidance which was very helpful. She also said that they were not focused on spice but flavour and she was not kidding. All our food was so amazing. You get what you pay for and I would have no hesitation in paying for this quality of food. Do not scrimp on portions neither very generous. We would without doubt recommend this restaurant.

Nice authentic interior sets the mood as does the smell of the open bbq. The manager was polite and friendly and able to accommodate us as a walk-in (wasn't a busy night of the week). Food was very nice, although a shame that you could not mix hot & cold dishes on plater. Main dishes were of a generous size and very good. Not sure if there was a choice to swap out the bugler wheat side for rice or fries (would have been good to have had that clear). Staff friendly, only downside was having a large group placed so close to a couple when other tables were available, it did impinge on dinning space, and there were a number of items unavailable on the drinks and food menu. That said lovely meal and would go back.

My take away bag split on the way home. It should be obvious to anybody with a brain that the cheap paper bag will split. The person who orders the bags must have a brain the size of a pea. I don’t know how good the food was as it went all over the floor but it looked rubbish.

Expensive but nice. Meal wasn't biggest but was enough

No vegan mains for a dairy intolerant vegetarian. Wait staff we’re polite and seemingly helpful but kitchen staff not interested in accommodating special dietary requirements. They removed the cheese from the vegetable kebab and left off the butter based dressing, which was appreciated. But the veg were basically flamed-grilled to oblivion. Really when your only dining option is the very average falafel and hummus starter the better choice is to stay away. Like a previous reviewer, I’d tried messaging the restaurant two weeks before our booking but never received a response. This should have been enough of an indication.

April 2023 It was a quiet mid week evening out with my son. His choice of restaurant and very pleased with it. He paid too, so even better!

I hadn’t booked and walked in for a table for one. A table was immediately set for me and I ordered quickly. The food and drink arrived quickly and were beautifully presented and very well cooked indeed. The Chicken Shish kebab was truly delicious with a great salad, dipping sauces and lots of fab bread. It was probably the best Turkish BBQ I’ve had and would strongly recommend it to anyone. And the service was great too.

A good Turkish restaurant. Enjoyed our Platter for 4 and two others had their own chicken Kebabs. Vine leaves and hummus were very good, as was the Merlot wine we chose. Nice surroundings. Worth a visit. Please be aware that there is an automatic service charge of 10% for tables of 5+.

Pretty standard Turkish fare. Good flavours excellent salad, some of the bbq meats were a little dry. Meal for four with drinks and two desserts £112.

It's been a while since I'd been here but as per, I left full and happy with the food. Slight price increase since my previous visit but that's expected along with everything else in the world, waited a fair while for the main and the bill but that's about all I can quarrel about. Great food, portion sizes and well worthy of the value. Staff are a credit to the restaurant.
