This is a nice place. The setting is good and service is excellent. Its walking distance from the subway and we went here because of the Financial times review. It was worth every penny. Friendly staff, good service and the suchi was extremely fresh. The handrolls to die for . This was worth 110,- pounds and we left the table contemplating if we would go back the next day. Keep it up, we will definitely be back.

This is a fab restaurant serving really super food. The service is a bit odd though, we were hassled to order and when we did, the waiter kept trying to get us to order something way more expensive than we had chosen. I would go back because the food was soooo good but just be aware you need to be resistant to the pressure.

Visited here after evaluating several reviews and a few emails between teh restaurant and us. WE liked the Japanese communication upfront with my japanese wife and we were glad to have chosen this place. Wwent theer with 8 people for a busienss dinner and everybody was very satisfied with the amount and quality of food and the service. We were also positivly surprised that a lot of Japnese semes to eat hera to which is a very good sign for the authenitc cuisine. The only negative point in our visit was that the Wagyu beef was out (theerfore only 4 str rating), though haven't been pre ordered from us Wills surely come back when again in London

The new decor is lovely, the service is excellent, but the tuna sashimi did not taste as fresh as one expects from a good Japanese restaurant. The salmon sashimi was fine, but even the tuna in the tuna roll was not as tasty as you could fine in a grocery store. No matter how interesting some of the other dishes were, the tale is told in the sashimi. I will not return.

The food is good and authentic Japanese. However, the waitresses there ruined the whole experience which was supposed to be great. We ordered gyoza and they didn’t serve it and we totally forgot about it because we ordered quite a lot of dishes. Then the bill came out, we didn’t notice that the dish was still included in the bill so we still proceeded with payment. After that, we just prepared to leave then one guy in our group realised that we just paid for something we didn’t get served so we called the waitresses and asked about this. They said that they would check it. It was 10 mins around the checking. It was the open kitchen so we basically could see that they were arguing in the back. And then the waitress who just served us came out and said “I think I served this to your table”. We were pretty off because we just wanted to make everything clear, not wanting to create trouble for them or something. And we insisted on the fact that we didn’t get served. And another 10 mins passed. Another woman came in and asked “You already paid so how could we solve it?”. Sound like an interesting question. My friend was nice enough to suggest them to bring the dish over and we could take away. Later, they brought the dish over, put it on our table. And that’s it. The only thing that we demand is apology. But nothing happened. Although the food was good, but the bad bad experience ruined the whole night. Especially when it was the day we congrated my friend on getting her promotion. It was supposed to be a trivial thing but the way they solved the problem was so bad and so victim-blaming as if we did something wrong.

Mugen has re-opened in a slightly odd location, at least at night, but alas it's not a patch on its former self. The ambiance is a little stark but, more critically, quite noisy and it doesn't have the remarkable feel of being cosy and spacious that the London Bridge site enjoyed. Service is fine, the menu ticks the right boxes, and the sake selection is decent but nothing really hums, and the food is variable. House made tsukemono were disappointing - not because local ingredients like carrot were used but because they just tasted like raw vegetables rather than pickles. The sea food soup in paper on the other hand was delicious and came with a theatrical presentation over naked flame (which almost got out of control). The sushi and the sashimi were acceptable but the ingredients, with a couple of notable exceptions like the belly tuna, rather humdrum. It's a glass half full restaurant - if you're in the area and fancy a Japanese meal, fine, but this reincarnation is not a destination eatery in my view.

Awful customer service, only interested in your money. We waited 45 minutes for our food even though when we entered there was hardly anyone there. Both our orders were wrong. Told them but they didn't address the issue promptly - eventually the manager came over to try to make me keep the food to save them the hassle of replacing it. Eventually they agreed to replace it, which meant another long wait. Staff have absolutely no customer service training, and were very unapologetic about the time we waited and the mixups. At the end when we mentioned it the manager got very defensive and started raising his voice. Me, my friends and colleagues who frequent this place won't be coming back. Tajima-Tei is probably my favourite restaurant in London, I've always loved the authentic experience and amazing food and have visited maybe 10 times since finding it by chance one lunch time, so I was slightly concerned to see they had changed ownership since I last went earlier in the year and was hoping not to find any changes made to its detriment. What has changed? The Itamae is the previous ones understudy. He brings a different style for instance slightly thicker sashimi, amazing nigri where he uses a smaller amount of rice and the fish is almost wrapped round three sides. The menu is slightly changed, but about 90% remains from before. So I'm really happy to say that it was as good as it's always been and I look forward to the next time.

Then again, I have never been to Canada, but like chips with cottage cheese on top. So this is never going to be a lengthy destination name dropping discourse on how unauthentic any Japanese food is outside * some obscure village in Hokkaido/Kyushu/Shikkoko/Guam*. This is about a London based, Japanese food restaurant.Right, Tajima Tei. This has been here for years and years. If you want sleek minimalist granite surroundings and waiters with acute angled haircuts, then off you pootle to Mayfair with the rest of the fading C listers and twilight years footballers. This is sorta random but there are tells of authnticity if you look closely. The shelves of Saki that are labelled in Japanese script of ownership. The sit up counter where you can get in an out and not worry about making polite chit chat. The two chefs working away behind the counter chiller, making everything fresh and in plain sight. menu is short and caters for the lunch crowd- set meals ranging between £14-25 including miso and fruit. Lots of fresh fish & meat on offer, less of the cheap and not so cheerful tourist market ramen base that makes me weep when I go to lunch at wagamama. The Sushi and sashimi is tingly fresh and unlike other places, the rice is at room temperature - these beautifully presented plates have not been sitting in a fridge all morning and are chilled to blandness- these are bespoke- with all the irregularities you expect from a hand made product. The Bento boxes are huge and filling, the tempura freshly fried- not defrosted and grilled as I have witnessed in other places .Downstairs is a function room that is filled in the evenings with Japanese salarymen, blowing their wages with their boss. You don't see these customers at Wasbai or any of the other Japanese themed chains in London. This place is not spacious, stylish, Michelin starred or fully of celebrities. Its is an honest and good value Japanese restaurant, tucked away behind blinds at the bottom of leather lane. You would probably walk past it if you were not aware of its presence. This is why you need to check it out. Once you have half decent sushi, you sneer at the Pret or Wasabi offerings with added vigour.I have been going here for 15 years now. My word, that's older than America.

At just over £17 not cheap but there was a splendid selection of goodies on the plate - including tuna, salmon, prawn and a white fish. The dish comes with miso soup which was good. I chose the pork - breaded and tasty - and this also came with miso soup which was a first for me - enjoyed it. The place got busier and it felt a bit crowded, tables being quite near to each other. Food quality is excellent, as are the skills of the Itamae. Actually it was full of Japanese businessmen and students. This gave me a clue that we were in for something good.Delicious Gyoza with soft glutinous shells and a filling of pork which was extremely tasty was the statrting point. My wife had a Bento box which she loved. I had miso soup. then tempura vegetables then a sushi platter. The bill with a bottle of house dry white which was very good came to £75. I think it was definitely well worth the money. The service was excellent. We couldn't finish everything we had ordered and although they were reluctant at first to allow me to take my wife's sashimi home, they eventually agreed to let us do so and it made a lovely supper.London these days seems full of Japanese restaurants especially with the appearance of takeaway sushi places like Itsu and Wasabi, this is on a different level.

It is easy to overlook Tajima-Tei, tucked under an anonymous building a third the way up Leather lane. It has a weathered look and further conceals itself with it's window decoration. It's certainly worth finding this place. Inside the restaurant has a traditional layout and decor, partitioned into a number of areas around the open kitchen, there are private rooms downstairs as well. The welcome is warm and the food is ultra fresh, delicious and elegantly presented. There is also, happily, a generous selection of premium sake is on offer too. Service is efficient and discrete. Prices are ok, above what you pay for generic chain Japanese themed chains and franchises, but that's fair.

This was the light lunch before the blowout meal in the evening (at Club Gascon - see review). We were celebrating my wife's birthday. In some ways it was a more enjoyable meal than the main event.Tajima Tei is authentically plain, a little tatty, and could almost pass for a little restaurant somewhere in a shopping mallin Tokyo. We had sushi (generous, fresh, room temperature), sashimi (mackerel was best of the three with salmon and tuna) and very crisp and moist tempura. Some decent but rather overpriced sake and suitably attractive crockery completed a lunch that ticked the boxes on many levels. It's worth a visit.

Ate here alone, on business in this neck of the woods. Lovely atmosphere, staff friendly and welcoming, attractive restaurant.I'm no great expert on Japanese food, though I have visited Japan. I can safely say the food here is on a par with some of the best I ate in Japan during my visit. Lots of Japanese customers being in the restaurant confirmed its quality, I hope.Really fantastic sashimi, nice miso (white variety) and brilliant service.I would recommend this place without hesitation. Will pass on my recommendation to my Japanese in-laws next time they visit London.

Took the family here for lunch. The place as packed as usual (lots of Japanese customers) but they managed to fit us in. The sushi and sashimi was fantastic ; as was the tempura and soups. The Mackeral sushi is particular good !!! The kids loved the food as well. Check the opening times though as it's not open at the weekend and only certain hours during the week. It's worth rearranging your diary for though !

Been here a few times now with friends.Owned and run by Japanese, with many Japanese clients on the occasions I have visited. Good sign.Sushi and sashimi are great with thick slabs of fish in relation to the rice. How it should be.The bento boxes, noodles, and rice dishes are also well executed and pretty good value in that they're all enough to count as a meal.Good selection of sake means a good night can be had here if you're looking for your sushi fix. Not the best you can get at this price range in London but better than average.... least it was.Ordered a Spider Roll (soft shell crab) only to find it barely had any soft shell crab in it. There were 3 pieces that had the tip of a leg in it, the rest of which was rice. To rub further salt in the wound, they charge you £15 for this roll. Shame on you.I may visit this place again... but will stick to sushi and sashimi from here on.

We have loved Tajima-tei over the years although it has not changed for better in our views after they renovated the place and introduced the new menu few years ago. We used to enjoy their sashimi salad and it was the best in London with great flavor and the freshness. The scollop nigiri tastes good so we will highly recommended it. It is probably not the cheapest Japanese in London but it tastes good and it has a nice homely touch to it for a good conversation between friends. We had bentos with tariyaki chicken and tempura - it was very tasty and rice is probably one of the best ones in London. :) The portion of the food is just right for the ladies but maybe a bit insufficient for gentleman. The price of bentos is about £15-£30 each so not the cheapest for the portion you get but the presentation certainly is good enough for a good Japanese restaurant.Only thing that we didn't like is that we waited for more than 15 mins for someone to come back and take our order for dessert especially after we signaled about three time for them to come. We ended up just asked for the bill and leave which was a shame to wrap up a nice evening out.

I really like this place. Fish is always very fresh. One of the best sushi and sashimi in London. Slight downside is I think they no longer open on Saturdays. I think they did in the dim and distant past. Monday to Friday it is definitely a great place to go. It was the first place my wife wanted to go after giving birth (no raw food for pregnant ladies. Aw!)

Needless to say I havent tried all the Japanese restaurants in London, but I have travelled a lot in Japan, and this is the real stuff, absolutely no fuss! Excellent sushi, authentic interior, no star designer needed. I can highly recommend this place, 10-15 minutes walk from Covent Garden

When to Tajima-Tei today for lunch and the food is simply very good.Ordered: Sashimi Moriawase (Assorted sashimi (tuna, salmon, sweet prawn, 2 fish) £15.50.and Sushi: (price is per piece)2* Toro - Tuna Belly - £2.80 2* Suzuki - Sea Bass - £2.302* Hotate - Scallop - £2.202* Uni - Sea Urchin - £2.80and Mackerel & ginger roll £4.00Service:Average - got an English guy for taking order, but with Japanese restaurant, I would expect the order to be taken by a Japanese person (personal preference). Ordered tea for drink and not offered for refill or ask for another drink!Food:Very good, especially the tuna belly. Its just melt in your mouth! Value:Expensive, but worth it.Atmosphere:The restaurant has a sign for no mobile phone allow which for me its great. Eventhough a lot of office workers in there and everyone seems to switch their phone off (or silent).anyway, a good experience and would go back again to try the set meal!

Leather Lane is not a part of London tourists are likely to visit - not in the evening anyway. You could twin this with a few drinks at the Mitre, just round the corner.I have been 5 times and aleways enjoyed the polite, efficient and quick service. You will see a reassuringly large proportion of Japanese diners here, even in the evenings.Emphasis is very much on fish, with a few meat and veg options including tempura but no noodle soup. Note that the sushi is served on warm rice, as it should be. Delicious pickles and sake very well kept too.One of the best Japanese places in London.

It's the best Japanese restaurant in London. I don't think you can find any better unless you fly to Japan. The sushi is so fresh and tasty that I don't want to swallow but keep them in my mouth forever.

Fabulous Japanese restaurant, excellent service, wonderful sushi and sashimi, good choices of premium sakes. This is not a glossy, overdone place that has had the designers in. This is the kind of restaurant that appeared to attract a Japanese clientele, plus some individuals who sat at the sushi bar. The quality of the fish was excellent. Service was swift and attentive, but there was no hovering. We were at the restaurant for 3 hours. We live in a country/city lacking this level of Japanese cuisine, and this satisfied our cravings for a bit. We would go to London to eat there again.

This restaurant is hidden away in Hatton Garden and you have to know it's there to find it. They are low key but filled with Japanese business people. The food is great and the staff are patient with English who are not too frequent here. it beats the mainstream and high end ( cost) restaurants on price and quality by a mile.
