Taj Bar & Kitchen in South Ayrshire

Had a wonderful stay here for one night and it was absolutely stunning the room was beautiful very clean bed was so comfy and the bathroom especially the shower was fantastic. We had our dinner in the restaurant and what a lovely meal it was the choice and service was tremendous and would definitely come back here again and last but not least the breakfast 👏👏

The food was amazing and the atmosphere was fantastic. We had a popadoms followed by seafood sizzler, tandoori mixed grill and naan bread then coffee. For a Wednesday evening I couldn’t believe how busy the restaurant was but when I tasted the food I fully understood why it was so busy. Thank you for a great evening.

We were here for lunch today. We had chicken pakora and a brunch dish of egg, toast & potato scone d (can’t remember the name) also from the three small plate menu £12.95 - Makhini daal, prawn poori and a coconut syrup naan along with a main of South Indian garlic chilli chicken and mushroom rice. A lime soda and a cider to drink and the bill came to around £55 for two but we had enough to take him for another meal! The portions are generous. We eat curry a lot and can honestly say it was by far one of the best we have eaten. The service was good, pleasant and attentive.looking forward to our next visit.

Sadly the standard has slipped. Only one in the restaurant - service was very slow, waiter didnt come at any point to ask if we needed any extra drinks (i had to physically go to the empty bar and wait to get a second round of drinks). Food came - put on table without explaining what dish was what. Waiter didnt even come/bother to ask if we wanted dessert. Two disappointed young boys. Portions were tiny and lukewarm. A very sad decline from usual standard

Went to the Taj for a meal with 3 of my friends on a weekend away, eventually when someone came to the table we ordered drinks (1 coke, 1 lemonade, 1 mojeto and 1 strawberry daiquiri) which took 15 minutes to arrive. Then it took a further 15 minutes to take our order for food. Ordered starters, honey chicken x 2, mushroom pakora x1 and l ordered chicken pakora which was never chicken pakora. Called the waiter over to send it back stating that this was not chicken pakora and he stood arguing with me that it was !, he then stated that 'did l want chicken breast pakora' well yes that's what l asked for not this crap. Brought out the correct pakora eventually. Food was mediocre, filthy dish towel which staff wiped the plates with. (We should have probably left at that point). Took ages to clear the first set of plates. Not the best curry we have ever had and not the cheapest £135.00 all in all very, very, very disappointed 😞. The quickest attention we got was when we got up to leave,there quick as a flash to pick up the bill. Would never return to the Tag in Prestwick. We would have been better going back to the Golf Inn as food and were excellent.

I had lunch, and it was very good, just the right amount of heat for me, i.e. spice

Pakora was overcooked, and service was very slow, waited for a while before even getting menu's or drinks. Mains were average at best, most disappointing was the bill, there was an extra starter and an extra main course added on it. On questioning the maitre d he apologised, rectified then advised it had been happening for a week. WHY WERE THEY NOT TELLING CUSTOMERS THEN??

Absolutely fabulous Indian. Great food, service and atmosphere. Great any time of day or night. Cheese and garlic naan is amazing.

Had an overnight stay here. It was a lovely little hotel with modern decor throughout. The room was nice and clean and the staff were very friendly. There's a small bar and restaurant which again is modern looking. Would highly recommend for anyone looking for a quick wknd away.

The Taj is an institution in the area it’s been here forever. Definitely a place I would highly recommend this time I had a take away. Myself and my family had a mid week take away from the Taj. A few curry’s some chips and rice in the side it was amazing. Just note you will pay restaurant prices for your food. A nice though is they will bring a card reader to your front door if you want to pay that way or you can pay cash. I did notice they are on just eat as well which is a bonus or you can order directly from their website

Nice curries a little dissapointed with the garlic naan, little to no garlic on it.

For the third time in four years my family enjoyed an excellent Christmas Day fixed-pricelunch at the Taj. We were warmly welcomed by the manager, Chris, who was very friendly and efficient throughout our stay. He even went out of his way to find cushions for my parents-in-law from the hotel attached to the restaurant! He also put our minds at rest about the gluten-free options on the extensive menu. Serving staff were attentive and friendly and they visited our table regularly to check how we were. They were very busy and perhaps it wasn't surprising that they forgot to bring a sharper knife and additional water to the table. However, this didn't bother us as they were so personable. The comprehensive Christmas menu gave us a lot of choice and the savings were generous. The 'honey chicken pakora' was a particular favourite from the starter menu. We didn't eat the soup course, and not for the first time, we bought that 'Leek & Potato Soup' was an odd choice for a restaurant of this kind. However, it was popular with many other diners. We will certainly be back, and we won't wait until Christmas Day 2025!

4 small chunks of chicken in a curry makes it a very expensive meal, and it's not the first time this has happened either.

Had the worst food ever from this resturant on Friday. Spent £70 on takeaway and put the majority of the food into the bin. The chicken tikka was nothing but a carcass. There was only a couple of pieces of chicken in the sauces which were tasteless and heavily thickened by cornflour. The pakora tasted as though it had been reheated numerous times. I phoned the resturant to complain and stated I would be posting this review. My guests were extremely angry. I will not be recommending.

I've had a lot of Taj's over the years. this was probably one of the best I've ever had yet! I love the fact I can order via justeat now. makes it easier for me.

we ordered 2 portions of chicken tikka pakora - burned the mouth off us, couldn't finish it 😫 also a portion of rice, a chicken tikka curry and a korma. Please lable them so people can tell the difference (both were similar colour) even the korma was very spicy so the tikka was hot. None of these dishes expected to be that spicy. 🥵 The only thing we really enjoyed was the garlic and coriander nans! gutted about the pakora 😔

Overall very poor place to enjoy Indian food. Have eaten in dozens of Indian restaurants around the uk and abroad but this has to be the worst. Very different menu which is ok but not backed up with good food, most dishes are over spiced and very expensive together with not great meat. Side dishes were bland and over cooked really would not recommend this place to anyone.

A Thursday night booking for 12. The restaurant was not busy. The service was friendly & prompt, although the training of (?) new staff was not entirely complete. You do not ask to remove the main course plates until ALL diners have finished. Apart from this minor point no other issues. Started with popadoms followed by starters, main courses & nams. Better choices of ciders would be useful? Everyone enjoyed their meals. I note a recent comment about the treatment of “staff tips”. Hasn’t the law recently changed whereby all tips must be given to staff? Something for customers to ask at all restaurants? Worth a visit if curry is your thing…

We were a group of 6 on a golfing trip to nearby Dundonald Links and having visited Taj a good few years earlier, I was aware that the quality of food was second to none. I am pleased to report that this has not changed and we all thoroughly enjoyed what we had from an extensive Menu. Our waiter attended promptly and took our drinks order before giving us plenty of time to make our choices. We started with a Mixed Pakora Platter and there was plenty for everyone, and very tasty it was too. All curries received glowing comments and the portions were very reasonable, the rice was fine but the Naans were exceptional, especially the Peshwari, highly recommended! Now the bad bit, three of us had coffee and, to be perfectly honest, my Flat White was easily the worst I have ever had! The writing was on the wall before it actually arrived, as, despite the revelry and good natured banter that existed after a few pints of their very fine beer/cider, the sound of the milk being boiled was very loud. When it arrived, it was about twice the volume it should have been resulting in a very pallid liquid was far too hot and looked and tasted nothing like coffee. Needless to say, the cup remained full upon our departure! Management really need to ensure that the Barista/Coffee Making person is properly trained if they are going to charge the going rate for 'Speciality' Coffee.

I now thin they gave mr the wrong main dish. For a Balti, it was far too spicy.

Pakora was crunchy not like it used to be felt over cooked sauce was runny and very little chicken

We ordered a meat starter platter to share for 4, it was delicious and plentiful. We then ordered 4 mains and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The restaurant was busy with a vibrant atmosphere and the service was excellent! Would highly recommend The Taj Prestwick!

Just had drinks so can't comment on the food, but the service was fabulous, very friendly staff, and the cocktails were delicious

The food was tasty only fault was that it could have been warmer as had to reheat.

Came from Kilmarnock to get a meal on the Saturday ngt , ordered chicken pakora totally disappointing as there was no chicken inside of them ,the meals were very bland and ordered two garlic breads which wasn't nice at all unfortunately we've not been since the new owner took it over, definitely wasn't worth £45 for what we received

Ordered takeaway and were told we’d have approximately a forty minute wait. As it was a Saturday we gave some leeway and let it go until an hour and a quarter. Phones up and weee told the driver “took it to the wrong house” and had returned our order to the Taj. This is somewhere that has our number but nobody called us at any point. When I called I received no apology for our wait. Disinterested, rude and lazy attitude all round.

👍 Ridiculously expensive now, a pint is now £5.80! Talks the shine off a nice meal out.

Very good food, clean toilets, excellent service and friendly staff.

Asked for no fresh coriander but that must not have been read as there was coriander throughout. The pakora was overcooked; very dry and hard and covered in coriander. It went in the bin. The poori was unlike any I've ever had; it normally comes in a patia style sauce, but this was really spicy and again full of coriander. I've kept the chasni and rice for tomorrow as I've been put off it all so far.

We had a fantastic breakfast here from the new menu. We loved the spicy Indian twist on scrambled egg and beans. The standard was very high and we can highly recommend it. The full Bhoona Scottish breakfast was just a little too much for me so I didn't finish it all. They serve this menu until 4pm so will be be back to have brunch soon, and eating later in the day I hope to finish my plate.

Very disappointing meal. Myself and my partner had the vegetable and chicken chefs special. We both agreed it tasted like a jar of supermarket curry. Needless to say we wouldn't return. Staff were very attentive.

Disappointed in the Cauliflower Pakora which was coated in a spicy powder…not needed.

Absolutely delicious seekh kebab. A lot of choice with mains. Haven’t had a disappointing curry yet, all delicious. Nice quiet atmosphere. Wheelchair access, staff are attentive and polite. Irtza was our waiter 5 star service.

Masala (Mild) and cheese Naan, unfortunately super bland, no flavour at all even for a mild dish. Had much higher hopes for such a well established and priced local Indian.

We looked forward to this take away tonight as last, 2 weeks ago was phenomenal!! We spent 70 +, 2 weeks ago and ordered the exact same this time 70 +. I must admit I was really disappointed this time around as the food we had was not the same at all, The flavour so different almost bland . Delivery is always spot on though or early so in all cases we have had it seems the kitchen is the issue with tonight's takeaway. We will not be ordering again for some time 😒.

Ordered mid week. Delivered rice instead of curry. Had to wait another half hour by which time nans and rice were cold. Really disappointing service.

Fantastic meal. A wide selection of dishes off the small plates menu. Every dish was tremendous and really distinctive. The chicken in the North Indian Garlic Chilli deserves a special mention.

Have used the Taj for over 40 years without issue. Recently, however, the take away orders have been wrong more often than they are correct. I drive from Hollybush to collect the order and when I get back home I find at least one part of my order is wrong. Not conducive to driving back to Prestwick. My order is the same every week and still it is not correct. The new till ordering system may not have buttons for a specific item but if this is the case then a note should go to the kitchen specifying the order that was placed. Food is always great when you get what you ordered and sit in is impeccable. So disappointed at writing this review but something has to be done to correct these errors. UPDATE 2/7/2024 Since I wrote my review the service has been exceptionally good. I have had no further issues with my take away orders. Very happy to say that the Taj is back on song. Well done guys and girls.

Came here quite a few times on our trip to Scotland. The food is of a high quality and very reasonably priced. All the staff were great especially our host Carley who was very attentive. The restaurant and the washrooms were very clean and well maintained. Will definitely plan on coming back here, on our next trip.

We were there in early May for a family meal, a group of nine of us ranging in age from 23 to 82. We had a fantastic meal - the service was friendly and the ambience/vibe was just right. The food was outstanding. For starters we had Chicken Jaat pat and mixed pakoras to share. The cauliflower pakora was especially yummy. For mains, I had Chicken Tikka Rajastani which was delicious. My mum in law had Lamb Chops, my wife Vegetable Dopiaza. We shared garlic and corriander nans (they are huge) and rices between us all. Everyone commented on how much they enjoyed their meal. Thankyou Taj - with a special mention to Carly the manager, and Jamie at the bar - both very friendly and efficient.

Came here for my sons birthday, food was freezing cold and stale. Went to the bathroom and saw the chef leave without washing their hands. My son was ill for over a week with suspected food poisoning. Please do not eat here and save your money. There are many better local Indians than this place.

Food was cold and terrible. Waited over an hour for starters. Main waiter didn’t was his hands after coming out toilet cubicle. I got suspected food poisoning after eating dodgy looking “chicken”. Have to give 1 star but should be 0. Will not be back

The tandoori salmon was delicious. Highly recommend.

Visited Friday night. Had a Tandoori Chicken.. missus had tikka. We usually have a side dish with our curries... like an Aloo Gobi, Bindhi Bhaji or Saag Paneer. They don't do side dishes here at all. Only rice or bread. The waitress had no idea what I meant. The tandoori dishes in the north come with some bland sauce and rice. The chicken dishes were tasteless tbh. We asked for some raitha for the tandoori dishes..mint yogurt sauce. We were given a huge bowl of it for £4.25 instead of a few tablespoons in a ramikin which is what we used to get here. The Taj used to be my favourite Indian Restaurant. I will not return here.

Wasn’t overly impressed the first time I ate here as I found the “madras” strength dish I ordered was too hot so I couldn’t taste anything else so I think they have a tendency to over chilli (so order the phall at your peril) but that’s not to say the food isn’t good - this time I ordered the korma (no chilli) pilau rice and plain naan and it was all 11/10 - even the paneer had a nice texture to it as opposed to the pre-packed rubbery stuff that is often lazily served - if they could offer a few green finger chillies on a plate then I like to sprinkle the seeds into my food sometimes which gives it a nice bite but not too much then that would be good - music was also really good normally I like the full Bollywood experience but the compilation of acid jazz covers playing this day was very chill

Chicken was tough the 2 sauces were identical and so watery . I ate 2 spoonfuls of the tikka and have been ill all day with a very upset tummy. 😡. It's the worst food i have ever had . NEVER EVER will I order or use this restaurant. It all went in the bin, unfit to eat. What a waste of 37 quid. Please avoid and save your money 💰 🤑.

was 2hrs early, but the restaurant phoned and apologised, offered to send it again at the time required or a discount voucher for our next meal. very thoughtful and they took responsibility for their mistake. great customer service 👏

We used to eat in for years but now that we have a dog we ordered a take away on Saturday. Really sad to say that we were really disappointed. The fish pakora was miniscule, the Taj special curry was tough and had to order rice separately. Also, the poppadoms were smashed to pieces. We don't live in Prestwick but stay over several times a year and really look forward to a meal from Taj but sad to say this time it was very average

I have been going to the Taj since 1989 and have been many many times for sit in meals, takeaways, buffets and family celebrations all bring back happy memories of great food and vibes including great service from owners and staff. I have not been back since a few years and what a shock i got the inside is nice and modern but the indian vibes are no more, gone are the feelings of walking into the old Taj and being transported into a true authentic indian palace . The food was bland and tasteless in small portion dishes with big prices where were the old Taj flavours that burst with flavour that made you enjoy and savour every mouthful and made you crave for more and the never ending portion size that gave your stomach that gut busting feeling .Its all gone downhill now and it chills me to the bone to say that at one point it was my Best ever indian restaurant but now when i left the only feeling i had was the bad after taste of the curry sauce they prepaired and my thoughts of having roasted cheese and toast to fill that empty spot when returning home .

Ordered food for takeaway on Christmas Eve. Six people sharing three curries. One of curries was shared by myself and another. We both got sick after eating it, ruining Christmas Day. The effects of this got worse and it turns out we have e.coli poisoning from the food. I am currently off work with a months course of antibiotics and morphine pills for my infected intestine.

Didn't eat just had coffee. Looks to be a busy place, which tells you alot. Service was good and the coffee was nice 👌

Christmas Eve meal for our family of four. Service was very efficient but not intrusive! Food was excellent: my mixed grill with Jatti sauce was amazing! Thoroughly enjoyable pre-Christmas meal. Can’t recommend the Taj, Prestwick high enough.

Ordered a takeaway. Collected on time,but buy the time we worked out what was in all 7 containers it was cold.they need to label what's in containers.far to much sause not enough chicken nan bread terrible.never order a takeaway from there again

I thought id give this place another chance after years away what a big mistake poor portions and vastly overpriced AVOID at all costs i wont be back

Food was the usual Taj high standard but my delivery time got extended 4 times. It was almost 2 hours after order that the food arrived. I had to call and was told they only had one driver which is fine but state the most accurate delivery time when the food is ordered.

The last couple of takeaways were just never the same .until tonight I haven’t visited for months in the hope of different chefs etc . We will never use again the chicken pakora was disgusting hard and funky taste . The curry’s were absolutely tasteless tasted of tomato blend on both curry’s . Rice over powered tasting of cloves and the garlic Nan which I paid extra for had no taste what so ever. What has happened to the old taj ? :(
