Was ever so slightly dubious about visiting this place after reading some negative reviews (anti English speaking comments mostly), couldn't be further from the truth, spent an afternoon there, and found other guests to be more than welcoming, really admired the owners for resurrecting this pub (and shop and airbnb), especially impressed with Meinwen who was chatty, witty, welcoming and informative, will certainly visit again.

Visited this nice looking pub but our experience of it was sadly appalling, Bar lady Andrea i believe her name was treated us like criminals, firstly on serving us the beers clearly needed topping up and asking her to do so was treated with a tut which was a great welcome, she was clearly unable to pour the real ale appropriately and looked very un natural, the barrell ran out after our initial 3 lovely pints but she then served us 2 cloudy pints on the 2nd round which were clearly contaminated with sediment, Andrea knew better though telling us they were fine... on telling her they werent she huffed puffed and moaned and reluctantly poured us 2 fresh crisp pints which kept us happy but my word she does not like you if you arent a local... id probably give this place a miss unless you are blind and/or deaf

Came here for drinks with my partner. There was a comedy night on, and it was grotesque for the few minutes of it we heard. Full of sexually explicit humour. Explicit to the point of being deeply uncomfortable, and I'm far, far from a prude. I really don't need to hear a man recite the intimate details of some encounter like this, especially a week after Russell Brand. Especially as a woman, and even more as a gay woman, it felt awful. Drinks were fine. Staff were friendly. Nice pub inside. The experience of the entertainment really soured me on this place, and I would have to recommend against anyone coming here if the people running it think that this kind of event was appropriate. Big potential, ruined. Management should have had at least some idea of the content of the acts.

Nothing like going for pint at a quiet village pub and hearing shouts of "w***er" from the drinkers. Been a while since I had been so was hoping it had improved. I used to like this pub. Will be fair they have doen a good job with making it look nice and I wish them well. But it was ruined by the horrible yobbish behaviour of some of the customers, shouting and wearing. This is supposed to be a community pub where people can go and relax and be respected.Hearing idiots shouting "b***ard" at people at the top of their voice ruins this.

Ridiuclous number of the people at the pub. A mix of building contractors on a job there, punters, and staff. No social distancing at all. Shocking. Behaviour like this is not going to help the hospitality or tourism industries (in which I work) survive. Shameful.

Maybe it's more pleasant during the week, but do not go on a Friday or Saturday evening. It used to a pub with a polite clientele, now it seems to be frequented with yobs and louts. Shouting and swearing all night is not the kind of thing that is suitable for a small, quiet village - especially not from a community pub!Sadly, I have to recommend avoiding this pub until they get customers who behave decently. This is a real shame because it was great for the area that the pub was saved by the community.

On a recent Tuesday afternoon, Hubby and me were driving along the A497 from Pwllheli to Criccieth when we decided to take a slight detour and stop for a walk around the quiet village of Llanystumdwy. Opposite the former home of Prime Minister David Lloyd George, we saw this Grade 2 listed pub. It was built about 200 years ago in the mid 19th century. I liked the simple style of the building. Although it has undergone subsequent alterations, it appears to have retained its unique character. I have since learned that this last remaining pub in the village was under the threat of closure, but after immense campaigning and fundraising, the community has come to the rescue and saved it....bravo! Unfortunately, it was closed at the time of our visit. I hope its current limited opening hours are extended in the very near future.

We decided to try it anyway and I have to say there was no disappointment with the place. The staff were lovely. We were served our selection of meals very promptly. We found a gem of a pub, small, quaint and olde worlde - the welcome from the propreitors as warm as the open fire, which was delightful. I ordered steak, which was cooked just as requested. The meat was succulent and tasty and served with chips, tomato, mushroom and peas. The meal was priced at £10.95 which included a glass of wine which I thought was an absolute bargain. The children had sausages and chips which were also of an excellent quality, you could tell they weren't cheap sausages as you often get. The atmosphere here was just lovely. A comforatble mix of locals and tourists creating a wonderful vibe, just one of those 'feel good' places and just as a pub should be. We have been visiting this area of Wales for around 40 years, and the opportunity to stay, for a week, in a friends's Cottage in the Village, was welcomed. "The Feathers", is a style of Pub that is, sadly, not found so much now. Cosy rooms, open fireplaces, along with a fascinating range of decorative artefacts and pictures. And, always a bonus to me, background music at a low, non-intrusive level! It being a Friday evening, and, knowing the Pub didn't open until 6.pm., we walked in at 8.45pm., thinking that we would avoid 'the rush'... Only to find that the kitchen was about to close! The Wife of the Licensee was very obliging, and rustled up a Welsh Beef and Ale Pie, with various vegetables, and, a tasty dish of Lasagne, and vegetables. This was accompanied by a bottle of Californian 'Jack Rabbit' Merlot. All for £33.25p. A pleasant and enjoyable start to the weekend...

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We have read the glowing reviews for Tafarn y Plu with interest; the menu is extensive, the beers and wines excellent. Our meals were as one would expect from a rural Welsh pub - we speak from many years of experience. Our meals were served promptly but with a very minor difference from our order; mashed potato and chips were served the wrong way round, mash with pie and chips with lamb steak. We quietly asked the waitress if she could please change over the mash and chips in the kitchen, no need to make a fuss or make fresh vegetables, and the gravy on the potatoes would not ruin the lamb steak. It is impossible that we would have ordered the wrong way round - my husband always has pie and chips and I heard him say - because I was waiting for it - I'll have chips with mine" as he gave the order. The owner looked at me and offered the alternatives, and I smiled back at him and said "mash, please". Soon after the waitress had taken our plates back to the kitchen to effect this very simple changeover, our plates were returned to us unchanged, by a lady who we presumed was the chef(?) who informed us and the assembled company in no uncertain terms that this was what we'd ordered, so this was what we'd get, "he doesn't make mistakes with his orders". To prove this statement she slapped his written order down on the table, and we were so astonished, all I could do was say diolch yn fawr, as she left us, and in our shock we failed to read the Incriminating Evidence. I then exchanged the offending vegetables, quite deftly under the circumstances, and we proceeded with our rapidly-cooling dinners. All was not over however, as the owner brought us a small dish of mash from the kitchen " in case we needed it". We didn't. The Incriminating Evidence mysteriously disappeared. An uncomfortably ill-mannered experience, and one we will not repeat. I have read many of the reviews of Tafarn y Plu, so please, Ian, spare us your self advertisement as in this case, it is unjustified. We were appallingly treated after our simple, courteous request for your staff to put a minor matter right.

To our loss, these walks occurred out of opening hours, at least during our August Family holiday this year we were fortunate to visit during the evening. We found the establishment to very friendly with excellent food, with a good choice for both adults and children, also fine selection of beers and ciders. After our first visit we were so impressed with all aspects we ate there a further three times. We would recommend the Tafarn y Plu to everyone.

Went here with my family at the end of a week's holiday, following recommendations from others who had eaten earlier in the week here. Received a very warm welcome and friendly service, although the regular landlords were away. Excellent menu - lots of locally-sourced food. The mains were delicious and freshly cooked. Puddings were disappointing - the child's portion of brownie came with custard instead of chocolate sauce as promised, and the bara brith portion was very small and quite hard. We enjoyed the local ales and cider to accompany our meal.

We called in having seen the road sign and having already not gone into two establishments which were not suitable for my son's wheelchair. I'm so glad we did call in the Feathers Inn. Jonathan (I think that was his name) couldn't have been more helpful. The pub itself is how I like a pub. Individual, not part of a corporate chain, and full of character. A good range of beers (I opted for the Cwrw Haf...very nice!), and the food is home cooked, fully of flavour, and affordable.

Cosy, warm and friendly. The food was home cooked and very tasty. Can recommend the pie, meatballs and sausage.Atmosphere was buzzing and relaxing. The pub was obviously frequented by locals... always a good sign.Ian, Cath and Jonathon were very welcoming. In fact Cath even ran outside and flagged down the local bus for us when we enquired about getting a taxi! We'll definitely be returning and recommending it to anyone who stays at our friends caravan in Chwilog!

My partner and I visited twice whilst staying locally. Once for a drink and then we returned for an evening meal. Great selection of beer's and ciders. The meal was excellent, locally sourced ingredients, big portions and a wonderful presentation. It is great to see a genuine 'local' pub who take real pride in their food - highly recommended for anyone visiting the Criccieth area.

On any visit to various parts of the UK we always research the area to find a decent pub for our evening libations. Checking out the area, this time, there seemed very few within the vicinity. Nestling in Llanystumdwy, a village reknowned for the upbringing and education of David Lloyd George until he was 16, is the Tafarn Y Plu (The Feathers). On our first visit, we had eaten, so decided to just have a couple. First impressions were of a small pub with two tiny rooms, one mainly for eating. I say small, but what it lacks in size, it gains in good beer, good food and extremely good hospitality (which proves ladies, that size doesn’t matter LOL).As my readers know, I love real ale. There were three on tap. Ian, the landlord, explained to me the history behind the names of these ales and the correct pronunciation. Having tried all three I was a little worse for wear the next morning but we decided to make this hostelry our eating place for the remainder evenings of our stay. We had seen the great food coming out of the kitchen for other diners, and the empty plates going back. The next evening returning I managed, badly, to order my favourite ale (at least it must have been a reasonable pronunciation because I got the one I ordered). We noticed, outside, a sign for Bardsey Island crab so that was our decision for that night. With a choice of accompaniments, we chose new potatoes. When it arrived, it looked delicious, even before tasting it. The crab could be no fresher unless it was still scampering across the ocean floor. Homemade coleslaw and Waldorf salad. Potatoes that tasted as if they had just been dug up from the garden and a salad, with a twist. I am not going to tell you the twist, go in and try it. Cath, Ians wife, certainly knows how to get the best out of local food. We returned for the rest of the break to try the cider ham. Bara Brith, and finally, local steak that melted in the mouth. If you are in the area, or even further afield, the drive is worth it. Go check it out. Great service and extremely friendly landlord and landlady. Cath and Ian, thank you tons for making our visits memorable.

On approach looks like a cosy traditional pub, where you'd expect low ceilings and lots of brass etc. It doesn't disappoint. It is a real pub, not a modern take on a real pub. None of this 'gastro' or 'brasserie' nonsense. Short but varied menu with daily specials and a nice choice of beers. The food is great. Fresh and homemade, and they do real pies, not those casseroles-in-a-pot with cashandcarry flaky-pastry-lid excuses for pies. Absolutely scrummy. We were staying a few miles away, only for a few days, but went there 2 days running because the menu was so tempting and the food so good. Being an old fashioned pub, its not big on cat-swinging-room, so I suggest leaving your cat at home to give it a visit! You'll be back. Puddings are good too!!!!!!

Visited Criccieth for three days and tried the local pubs for food and went here on my last night. Really wish I'd discovered this pub on day one. It is a real gem and the best by a mile in the area. Welcomed at the door, escorted to our table and treated with genuine respect by all on the staff. And the food was fabulous. Recommend the rump steak and the almond slice with custard to finish. Pity I was driving as the locally sourced real ale was very palatable. If you are in the area then you owe it to yourself to pay this lovely pub a visit.

It would be difficult to stop extolling the virtues of this beautiful little pub. The warm welcome from the landlord and his wife, the great range of beers, ciders and wines, the wide range of good meals offered! I could go on, but the most outstanding praise must go for two other things. Firstly, the food is in ample portion and is always cooked to perfection. Secondly, and this is what created the greatest impression, is the high quality ingredients always used in every meal. One of the best places I've ever eaten in.

Four adults, had a nice evening meal here. We all enjoyed our food, tasty and a good quantity. Nice selection of beers. Pleasant service and pleasant hosts. We were in the back dining room, and unfortunately it was quite loud because other diners were playing videos (loudly) on their phones in an attempt to entertain the children. Other than the screaming children, a nice visit.

Great reviews and a lack of inspiring eateries on the Llyn sent us here and we're glad it did. We were met with a very warm welcome which is rarer than it should be in the hospitality business - ironic really! The selection of vegetarian dishes, a strong bearing on our choice to eat there, was good, and generally creative, though they only occupied a small percentage of the extensive menu and could perhaps have been a little more numerous. We had one of each of the three options on the main menu and all were really delicious - blue cheese sauce goes beautifully with the spinach supreme. The portions were perfect and service excellent. A good selection of drinks and yummy puddings topped it off. Try the cheroffee pie!

After the reviews and the write up on the website I must admit I was expecting a bit more to the menu. Our food was okay but unfortunately not outstanding, I had the sausages and do have to make mention of the lamb one as it was very nice indeed. My other half had the stroganoff and said it lacked flavour, we did however share a crumble for desert which was very nice.

Had read all the reviews and was expecting something really special. Normally home cooked means cooked professionally on the premises, and normally something nicer than you can cook yourself. It filled a hole, and the portion sizes were large, but it didn't light my fire, and didn't live up to its reviews. Dining area was cramped and cluttered.

Small and unassuming, we came across the small Welsh pub while on a weekend getaway. Food was very good and atmosphere even better. I didn't understand a lot being said however my girlfriend was able to translate. Not that that was an issue as our host behind the bar and his team easily switched from Welsh to English. I only mention this as it gave the place a great atmosphere and you could very easily imagine the place 200 years ago. Worth a stop in definetly.

I would highly recommend a visit here if you're in the area. I can't comment on the food but the hand pulled ales are usually top notch, the most recent visit had a superb Cwrw Haf from the Conwy brewery. There is an emphasis naturally on all things Welsh including an extensive cider menu and the Wrexham lager is simply the best! The welcome is friendly and there is always a mix of Welsh speaking locals and visitors from around the globe relaxing in the cosy bar. There are 2 other rooms which are mainly geared for eating and the pub is featured in a book celebrating fine unspoilt interiors.
