A really nice and old pub, apparently the oldest in Pwllheli. We had a selection of local drinks and all were fantastic. Inside the pub is quite open plan and has 2 large TV's which show sports. Majority Welsh speaking patrons and Welsh music can be found here. Fantastic atmosphere, if you're in the area, I'd recommend a visit!

This is listed as a dog friendly pub that serves food. Facts are they no longer allow dogs, and don't serve food. My partner asked about both, and was answered abruptly "NO" The information on the internet needs changing to reflect that they don't do food, nor allow dogs, to save wasted journeys. Because phoning is pointless, they don't answer when bar is busy.

We went to this pub as previous ratings online said that dogs were welcome. We entered the pub with our very well-behaved and calm Greyhound and got sent away straight away as no dogs are allowed (not even in the garden!!). Sad, but definitely not dog-friendly at all!

I was after a friendly local bar, and was totally shocked on the inside. Young people openly trading cash for small polythene bags with a white powdery substances inside. This was in clear view of the bar staff and other customers. In the toilets, young folk openly taking these substances into their bodies via their noses. They friend when flinch or stop when other customers came in to use the toilets or sinks. Police were actually stood outside and even when a member of the public brought it to their attention, they made no effort to investigate. If this is your scene, you'll feel right at home here, but if you're after a friendly boozer, avoid this place..... Shockingly horrible experience...

Travelled back 'home' to see family and friends after 2 years and it was great to see the place so full of life and everyone enjoying themselves. I am English but used to live in Pwllheli and my partner is from there. They are not anti English at all, unless you go in there with an attitude!! It IS a traditional Welsh pub and obviously they will speak their own language. Avoid if you have a problem with that. Real, down to earth owner and staff who will treat you as you treat them.

Had a great day out on Bardsey Island and stopped here on the way home to Bala. Had the chicken and it was as moist as my ex-wife when we first met. Knocked a star off because there was a guy in a red jacket and green cap loudly calling himself ‘the bina boy’ and saying ‘alrite lad’ more often than the scousers off Harry Enfield. Apparently he hasn’t moved to Pwllheli since very long. Send people like him back to where he came from and this could easily be a five star establishment.

Firstly the carvery is fantastic! Secondly SputnikJones, Trip Advisor is meant for genuine reviews, good or bad! Lying and giving false reviews on this can have a massive effect on a small business who are trying their best! If you are going to do this, at least use your proper name Shirley (con) Jones! Penlan is a welsh pub, which i would expect in Wales! But is also very welcoming to any English customers, as well as other nationalities. From what i've heard, you have been refused a drink once in the Penlan, but for no other reason than you being too drunk! It probably does make sense that you don't remember this! Or i suppose it could be that it isn't a dog friendly pub!!! (Which by the way it is, there is a beer garden in the back where dogs are more than welcome and are even provided with a bowl of water!!) Hope this review ensures other people aren't influenced by Shirley and her vicious intentions!

We were not disappointed. we got there a few minutes before the started serving and, within minutes the place had filled up with largely locals - generally a good sign.We queued for about five minutes and were offered a range of meats expertly carved and cooked to perfection. There was a huge range of beautifully cooked vegetables and all the usual accompaniments. We returned four empty plates and were so full that we didn't have room for a pudding.Aside from the carvery there also appears to be a fairly good menu including children's meals.

On a wet Wednesday, waiting for the showing at the local cinema to start, we ventured here for some food. We were very warmly welcomed, with an apology for the wait ( half of Wales had decided to seek sanctuary from the rain at the same time). We were advised that there would be a wait for the food before ordering, which was fine ( a wait often means freshly prepared food!) However on arrival my husbands order was wrong ( beans not cheese ) on advising this we were told "well it'll be another 15mins to do it again" so we opted to have the beans scrapped off, which still took 10mins! My sons Beef Madras was reminiscent of a vesta curry only not as tasty. My masala was watery and my daughters spaghetti bolognese was bereft of any sauce but salt in bucket loads used to cook the pasta. At over £30 this was pricey for such poor quality food. I would have discussed this with the management at the time, had we not been late for the cinema. The building is lovely as are the staff, can't help thinking a bit more effort with the food and this place would be really excellent

I disagree with the last review, not sure if this person has been in the right pub! Personally i've always had an excellent time here, its a great pub, welcoming staff and 5 star rating food and its great to sit in the large beer garden on a sunny day. They have an eclectic mix of live english and welsh bands and DJ's. It is a Welsh pub promoting the welsh culture, but the pub is located in a predominately Welsh area! I personally have had no problems. I encourage everyone to visit and have a great experience.

From the outside on Penlan street this place looked good, we ordered our drinks and went to sit in the beer garden as the weather was lovely. We decided to order some food, it came with 'extras' being a dark brown hair in my friend's curry. We informed a member of staff but they couldn't care less. A short while later came the entertainment in the form of 'old men with sticks arguing about a car'! they sounded like locals. We were expecting to have a nice meal with a few drinks in the beer garden and to relax, instead we got bad food, and a rude awakening. We ended up going to the mitre pub which was a much more pleasant experience. There are plenty of eateries and pubs in this small town but I would recommend giving this one a miss.

As I can speak and understand the strange welsh language, if you go here and you are english and you hear the word 'size' mentioned by the welsh, this is what they call the english. It is poorly run and regularly serves under-age drinkers. The food is of a poor standard as are the manners of the welsh. They are not as welcoming as they would like you to think, they just want your money. This place is run by welsh nationalists, they are extremely rude. A much better option for a nice meal and drink is the mitre on the maes and the crown hotel on the high street.
