The experience at the campsite was disappointing. Upon our arrival, the staff were rude, appearing to have been drinking. This created an unwelcoming atmosphere, and both my partner and I felt uncomfortable using the restrooms, which were inconveniently located behind the bar where patrons were drinking. When I asked one of the staff members to repeat a joke they had made, I was met with laughter from the group, further adding to the discomfort. The campsite itself was a small, fenced-off clearing in the woods, offering minimal amenities. The shower was overgrown, mouldy, and lacked adequate privacy, while the only other amenity was a porta-potty. Given the cost, the value was extremely poor. The next day, we chose to drive further into Wales and discovered a place called Penpont, which was not only more affordable but also offered stunning surroundings and excellent facilities. I would highly recommend those looking to visit this area to consider staying there instead for a far better experience.

We stayed on the campsite, very basic but beautiful scenery, car park is right next to the campsite but be aware you do have to cross the main road to the toilet. We were able to arrive later in the evening which was perfect for us and you could pick where ever you wanted to pitch. Only thing that was missing was a drinking water tap on the camping field.

Overpriced beer, overpriced campsite and rude owners. Can’t comment on the food because they couldn’t be bothered to cook. Also something dodgy about the card payment system, comes up on bank records as a restaurant in Reading!?! What’s not to like! The locals are nice but they are at every other pub in the area too.

Can't fault the location of this campsite, right next to the Beacons Way and Cambrian Way, and with the pub just across the road of course! The camping field is set back from the road next to a river which gives it a peaceful atmosphere. The landlord was friendly and, although his chef was unexpectedly not there when we stayed, he was able to get some food sorted for us which was appreciated after a long hike! The only issue was that the shower wasn't working (apparently the pipes have repeatedly frozen in the winter) and if that was resolved it'd be a perfect place in my opinion.

Stayed in the campsite next to a running stream, very basic campsite but lovely because of that. Amazing scenery, loved it, we were on motorbikes and no issues whatsoever. Nice few pints and some food for the evening in the pub, friendly staff and a nice bite to eat. Would definitely return.

I don’t usually write reviews, but if I’d been warned about the racist landlords, I wouldn’t have visited. Came in here the first weekend of September as was camping nearby. I had originally planned to camp at Tafarn y Garag - thank goodness that didn’t work out. Andy, the owner, was at first very friendly. He came over to me and my boyfriend and spoke to us about things to do nearby. The other locals also were friendly, asking us where we were from etc. We were sat at a table next to some locals and the landlord. At one point, one of the group said about it being an ‘Indian summer’, to which the landlord replied: ‘no, it’s going to be a p*ki summer.’ About 10 minutes later, when the landlord had gone into the pub, I went in and told him how what he had said made me feel uncomfortable because 1. I have no time for racism and 2. I am part Asian myself and my dad suffered racist abuse growing up in the UK. Andy spouted the usual stuff you hear from a racist - he has Asian friends so it’s ok, he didn’t mean it like that etc etc. It wasn’t a heated conversation, but it was extremely difficult speaking to someone so ignorant. Andy’s partner (who is white) had been lurking and came over and started saying how even though they get called ‘honkytonks’ they’re not allowed to get annoyed about it. I almost laughed - I find it hard to believe that in the UK, let alone the very white Brecon Beacons, anybody gets called that. Also, racism 101 - white people haven’t quite got the same history when it comes to racism. Anyway, I was trying to explain racism, what it is, why it’s bad (like you would to a young child, not a conversation you expect to have with middle aged pub owners) and that’s when the n word started being thrown around. Andy was saying how he calls his black friends the n word and how they call him it. Andy’s partner was also using the word and I had to ask them to stop. Andy’s delightful partner the went on to say that back in her day you could call anyone anything you wanted. Lovely. Sounds to me like she thought she could call people what she wanted and didn’t care how much it hurt them. Eventually, she stood between me and Andy and said this isn’t going anywhere. I’d had enough, so me and my boyfriend swiftly left and went down to the Gwyn Arms - where we spoke to the landlord who was lovey and we didn’t hear any racism - hurrah! There are so many nice pubs around this area where you hopefully won’t have to experience things like this - save yourself the frustrating conversations about why we shouldn’t use slurs / outright racist language, walk 6 mins down the road to the Gwyn Arms and have a drink in the nice garden. Tafarn y Garag is the worst pub I’ve been to and ran by the vilest, most ignorant landlords I’ve ever come across.

After visiting the nearby Caves, we decided to look for somewhere for a drink and bite to eat and came across the Tafarn by sheer chance. This delightful place was relaxing, and busy but not crowded. Very friendly owners, laid back atmosphere, good music, friendly regulars who will happily help steer you in the right direction. We decided to try the bar food option of sausages and chips, and for £10 on a lovely day this is finely priced for the small mountain and four sausages with a small side salad that you get served. It also boasts its own campsite and is conveniently located for the Brecon Way for walkers and campers. We will be back!

Beware when ordering food - these are not meals they are bar meals but you are not told beforehand. The lady didn't even ask us how our food was. Nice setting but not good value and we would not return unfortunately.

First struck by the fact that there wasn’t any distancing advice (Covid) or regulations. When leaving the pub it was full, this at a time when the area was entering a second peak and was one of the most effected areas in the country. Had a pint and beef burger and chips. The burger was £9.99 and was quite nice but there wasn’t anything other that the burger and chips, not even a lettuce leaf. Really is a bit of a dive.

Very unwelcoming landlady. We went once for a drink but gave the place a second chance (as it was so close to the campsite) and went again for food. We had booked a table but the landlady told us they hadn’t saved us one, she just said “we’ve got to do what we’ve got to do”. Such a great location for a pub but it is truly terrible (menu is rubbish too - chicken/pork chops/lamb chops and chips) go to the Ancient Britton down the road for a lovely local pub.

Great little pub, good beer, average pub food, nice atmosphere and lovely views from the garden. This place is dog friendly and I think you could even take your horse, there's a lovely grazing field to the left of the pub, which used to have tables and benches in. Doesn't seem to be so any more though. Nothing posh - but nice and even better when the weather is on your side.

As a group of friends on a walking trip in Brecon Beacons, we stopped at Tafarn y Garreg hoping for some food and a beer. We found the place to be very unwelcoming. The owner and the barmaid didn’t want to know. There was no food available and the beer selection was very limited (Heineken or cider). My partner and I visited last weekend on Saturday. We were welcomed by Andy, who introduced himself and immediately informed that all tables were fully booked and it would be roughly an hours wait for food. The warm and welcoming nature of the pub and the friendliness of staff encouraged us to stay and wait for a table. Meanwhile, the staff were very busy, but still managed to cater to us by getting us drinks whilst we waited. The Italian New Yorker was amazing and very good value for money. The location is perfect and is surrounded by mountainous views. Overall we had a great experience here and will definitely visit on our return to the area! We cannot recommend this place enough!

Called here today. One pint of shandy, a lemonade, can of coke and pack of crisps = £9. I queried the cost and was told £4 for the pint, £2 for can of coke and £2 for half a lemonade and £1 for crisps. I Sat back at the table. The can was a multi pack, as were the crisps. The lemonade was out of a supermarket brand bottle. Place is complete rip off. Told people in car park not to go there (they didn’t). The mad thing is it’s not against the law to sell a multi pack but this is a complete lack of respect for your paying customer.

Stayed here as group of 5 couples for 1 night camping in the field opposite the pub. Decent location, small field that did the job for us for the night. Toilets and shower were advertised, the toilet was an outdated port a loo full of cobwebs and flys, as for the shower hot water supply was good but not much privacy. Now on to the delightful pub.... what a disappointment this turned out to be. We were the only people inside to order food when we arrived, the menus being given out, drinks being ordered and food orders being taken were on to a slow start! There were 10 of us so larger than average group of people I understand but we waited 1hr 40 mins for food to be served. The food on the menu was very simple so no amount meals should have taken this amount of time. As my partner was finishing off his meal mine was only then coming out, that is not what I class as an enjoyable meal.We were hoping for home cooked pub food, again another let down, frozen chips and poor quality steak full of gristle and cold. The steak was sent back which then made us see the horrible side of the people running this pub. They had very bad attitude with us raising voices saying they had sold 10 steaks today and no one else had complained, this isn’t how you speak back to a customer. They should have accepted that we were not happy with the quality of food. We didn’t once complain about the food taking an 1hr40 mins we grinned and beared it whereas many others wouldn’t have put up with this. The lady behind the bar had a disgusting attitude towards us all which was unacceptable. To top it off when working out our bill we were found to have been overcharged by £25 on drinks which had already been paid for in cash!!!I would avoid this place if you don’t want any drama.

Stayed here for one night camping with 9 other friends. We set up camp in what was quite a small field which wasn’t a massive issue but it’s worth looking into if your want more space. The toilet is a portaloo which wasn’t the cleanest. Shower was outdoors and no privacy although water was hot. We then made our way across the road to the pub for food where we were waiting an hour and 50 minutes for food and even then the food wasn’t of a good standard. When complained the attitude on the bar lady was completely unacceptable and we were also over charge by £25. Overall a poor poor stay !!

Food took 1hour 40 mins to arrive. There was 10 of us, ordering simple meals (5 x burgers, one ribs, steak etc). Frozen chips. Steak was full of grissle and cold in middle. It was rare, but rare does not mean cold.when we complained about the steak, was offered a burger to take away as everyone else would have finished eating by the time another steak arrived. Then charged nearly £12 for a burger to take away. Made to feel really uncomfortable so when we then realised we had been over charged by £25 we just wanted to get out of there. Lots of attitude from the bar lady. Right, the campsite. Quite a small field. Not an issue, but worth noting before you visit. Toilet is a portaloo full of flies, although clean and not smelling. There's a cockerel in a nearby field which starts its antics around 4am depending upon the time of year. There's a small shower with minimal privacy. Water tap didn't work. Others were getting their water from the pub across the road. Overall the experience wouldnt have been too bad if it hadn't been for the pub food and service.

My partner and I called for Sunday lunch and ordered two roast lamb dinners. The lamb was tough and sinewy and not even the mint sauce made it taste any better! The dinner when it arrived looked decent enough, served with creamed potatoes and roasted, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and gravy. Just one small demise in that there was no seasoning at all and the whole meal was tasteless, including the gravy. The place looked as if it needed a thorough cleaning and the decor was just awful. It needed a complete overhaul and refurbishment. Hence we will not be returning any time soon and if I could give one more tip, it would be to get a new chef....

We were starving, and happened to pass by Tafarn t Garreg so decided to stop for dinner. Not so many tables, but we were welcomed in on a Saturday evening without reservation. This is a gastropub, so a bit "fancier" than your regular pub grub perhaps... However we weren't so impressed with the food. The steak wasn't seasoned and the sea bass was floating around in oil/butter. The fish supposedly came with a greek salad, but it was a few small lettuce leaves, a couple of cucumber and tomato bits and the same salad came with the steak (although that wasn't mentioned in the menu). And the mushrooms on the steak came from a tin.... Not thoroughly impressed. Service was OK and the wait wasn't too bad. Wouldn't rush back anytime soon though....NB! There were a lot of fruit flies (or some such thing) in the air - one decided to end it's life in my wine glass).

The place is really nice, it has been done out extensively and looks really smart. A few kitsch bits around the place but generally it is very good. Food was ok, all well within the bands of acceptable, the steak tasted nice but was advertised as Rib-Eye and this was anything but. I don't mind substitutions when you run out but let the customer know, that is good restaurant practise. The menu has something for most tastes but to live up to the decor and ambience of the place needs to up it's game. This place could be so much more. Still, I will be back, I have known this place all my life and it is great to see it open again after years of intermittent trading. Someone rated this as a gastropub. Not yet it isn't.

I didn't know this place was open. It looks like an ordinary house from the outside but inside - W~OW! Warm and cosy. It's small so I think it would be wise to book. We did - and I'm going again for my birthday treat. This place is an abasolute gem just metres from the famous Dan yr Ogaf Caves.

I must admit to have never written a review of this nature on TripAdvisor before. We decided to call in at Tafarn y Garreg on our way home from Brecon. It holds special memories to my wife and I as it was here that we went on our first date some 38years ago. We had plenty of time of time to look at the changes that had been recently made to the interior as we were left standing in an empty bar for some 10 minutes, when I decided to look in to the kitchen to see if they were open, I did get acknowledge by someone in the kitchen, but after another 5 minutes waiting in the bar we left and walked across the road to our car before taking our custom to a nearby hostelry.

Had a meal here on a Saturday evening, the atmosphere is lovely & cosy with the wood burner lit. The food I thought was OK, nothing major wrong with it but probably not to our tastes. The ciabatta starter was plentiful but soggy (proper ciabatta should be crisp). The sea bass was a very large fish in a sauce with new potatoes but the Greek salad didn't I feel go with the dish - veg would have been much nicer especially at this time of year. My husbands rib eye was large but the matchstick "chips" were he felt overlooked - we are neither of us keen on this type of chips and prefer chunky chips. Service was very good and attentive.

We've been enjoying a relaxing break in the Brecons and met up with some old friends here last night so a big thank you to Dave and Julie for recommending it. Tastefully decorated and delicious food. All six of us ordered a different main course but it all arrived quickly and at the same time. Great hosts. Support your local businesses!

Stopped by for a quick meal on our way home from Brecon. Cant fault the place. Lovely food, great staff and a nice log burner. I had the tuna steak and my partner had the bass both of which were cooked to perfection. Mine came with cajun fries which were delicious also.

So we went for an afternoon drive in this beautiful sunshine, and called in the Tafarn for lunch. Having recently returned from our fourth visit to Zante we opted for the chicken Slovakia meal. The chicken was beautifully cooked, succulent and tasty, and complimented with a refreshing tzatziki. The settling was relaxing, looking out at the wonderful Beacons. And the service was excellent, friendly and relaxing. Definitely be back.

The Tafarn Y Garreg is a great place to spend a few hours. The building has been refurbished very tastefully and it is a modern space with eveidence of the old building still visible. It`s not easy to get this right, but the owner has made it work perfectly. There is always a good reception from the staff and local people there, and the food was amazing. Quick delivery and very tasty and not too expensive at all. If anybody on here has posted negative comments...They must be from another planet. There is nothing to complain about here.

I had the best steak here that I can remember and My wife's souvlaki was just as good. When she explained to the owner that her gall stone problem meant she had to avoid fats ( or suffer the consequences !! ) without being asked - he went to the chef and asked him to prepare the souvlaki in a special way to suit my wife. So thoughtful....The staff are very friendly and the location is stunning - surrounded by hills. We both thought it was the best meal we could remember having in a restaurant.Thank you Tafarn-y-Garreg. Called in on the way past back from Henrydd Falls. It was a quiet mid week lunchtime and the pub was not busy. Very nicely decorated, clean. Helpful young man at the bar. My husband had a a 1/4 pound burger and I had the Piri Piri chicken. Delicious, nicely cooked, well presented. My chicken was so moist and tender. Recommend this place as friendly and also good value.

We went here for Saturday night meal. Walked down from campsite at national caves, v fast road but pavements all the way and it was precisely a mile! Had a lovely meal with really friendly staff. Looks like it's recently been refurbished. Liked it so much we went for Sunday roast too which was also v nice but the roast came with mashed potatoes not roast potatoes- have to say I was disappointed! Only other minor improvement could have been made was there needs to be ready supplies of condiments! There was only garlic mayo (no normal?!) and no English mustard (fair enough on the mustard, we were in Wales!) but on the whole enjoyed it and would def recommend in the area.

I visited this pub years ago but it had been closed for a long time, very good job of decorated inside. Staff very attentive, excellent service at bar and restaurant. My husband had soup to start - he commented that it was really lovely & generous portion. We both had venison and it was lovely. Having a gluten and dairy allergy can sometimes be difficult, but staff went out of their way to help. Really enjoyed and wouldn't hesitate to go back.

Called in for lunch after 2 hour walk at Hendrydd Falls, great pub/restaurant. Dog friendly, although if busy, may have to sit outside. Friendly atmosphere, and very good menu, we had the anti pasti with Ceasar salad which was very well presented, of good quality and reasonably priced. Ideal location with good views, and the pub is decorated to a high standard. Would highly recommend, and will be visiting again, as soon as my legs recover!!

Called in on the way back to our cottage for the weekend on a stag do. A small but quaint pub with excellent staff that had a good laugh with us. Surprisingly didn't want a picture with the stag, but can forgive that. We ordered a wide range of food which arrived in a timely manner and was excellent quality. The Brains Ale was top notch as well! Even put the FA Cup Final on for us.

Whilst on a weekend break I popped in with a group of friends for an impromptu drink and a bite to eat on the afternoon of the FA Cup Final. We were served by two excellent bar staff who were knowledgeable and attentive. The food was of an excellent quality although we had missed out on the Greek Meze plates. I enjoyed the Celtic Burger whilst others had a range of dishes from the menu - every one was excellent and offered good value for money. The Brains OSB was an great pint too.I will certainly be stopping back next time I'm in the Beacons.

Cracking fish & chips, we ate in and staff were welcoming and friendly. Ordered at counter then had table service. Big portions, lovely crispy batter and chips perfect, not pale, nice and golden. Not too greasy. Sausages are huge! We parked at Poundland. We will return and recommend. 👌
