The hidden Gem in Truro, Cornwall !!! we have lived in Truro for 18 months and have been meaning to try this superb restaurant and we are so glad we did. From the minute we walked in, it was faultless, the greeting was welcoming and very informative on both the food and wine. Then came the food presented beautifully and tasted even better than it looked ( we eat with our eyes). We had the set menu because it had everything we wanted and at £36 for 3 courses it was Michelin star food and a great price. It had a great wine list again quality at a good price we chose a Spanish Albariño and at just £42 it was one of the best we have had in all our years visiting Spain. We have eaten at all the big named restaurants old and new in Cornwall and this is one if not the best. We will be going back very soon for dinner and have already booked the Sunday lunch which I have been told is an experience in its self.

WOW! You can find Sunday lunch anywhere; but Tabbs Sunday Lunch is a full on experience from start to finish. The restaurant decor; the warm welcome by Debbie the hostess who then morphs into Debbie an incredible waitress - nothing was too much trouble; our small dietary requirements were handled quietly and thoughtfully and her service was impeccable! Somehow she and Nigel have managed to create a warm friendly atmosphere without any loss of table privacy. Then what is there to say about Chef Nigel except subtle; brilliant and the creator and provider of a real Sunday treat. We've eaten at Tabbs for many years and this partnership really works. Whatever the menu we always want to return to try yet another delicious meal. Our warmest thanks Debbie and Nigel - no praise is too great! Keep going!!

This is undoubtedly the top restaurant in Truro. We have now visited many times, both in the evening and for Sunday roast. It is always top notch fine dining with super presentation, taste and texture, all at a very reasonable price for this very high standard of food. We came for the Sunday roast this time, with a delightful four courses that we enjoyed until late afternoon: Excellent and personal service at all times. Highly recommended.

Outstanding meal. Superb range of textures and flavours, and unique combinations of quality ingredients. I started with bream and black pasta - beautifully fresh and flavoursome. Mains was a perfectly cooked duck breast fillet on a bed of creamy celeriac with a pot of cassoulet (nice texture, not mush!). Veg side was a real treat - courgette slices deep fried in an exceptionally light batter and served piping hot, and really tasty new potatoes with a paprika coating. For dessert the baked cheesecake had a creme brulee type caramel cover and was served with apple sorbet and an orange sauce - definitely never come across that combination before and it worked a treat. All in all best restaurant I've eaten at in Cornwall.

I found it difficult to recommend anywhere for a fine dining experience in West Cornwall until we visited Tabb’s on Thursday 14th September. Small menu (always a good sign) with just 5 or 6 starters, mains and desserts, I was excited by the menu representing local, seasonal produce. Faultless service, with a complimentary amuse bouche of mushroom soup with garlic oil and lovely homemade bread. The starters of bream on black pasta with artichoke cream was outstanding, whilst my other half really enjoyed a lightly spiced Thai soup. Beef short rib and duck main courses were cooked to perfection and had outstanding sides including pig cheeks with chick peas. Dessert of chocolate marquis with black treacle ice cream and salted caramel sauce was one if the best desserts we have ever had-so much so we licked the plates! Decent wine list at reasonable prices and complimentary iced tap water. This place is an absolute gem and we will be returning on a regular basis.

Nigel Tabb’s Sunday roasts are always special but this menu was particularly good. We only have beef as a rare treat, so, when we do have it, it has to be good. Today’s short rib dish was superb. The accompanying dishes on the menu made for an excellent leisurely lunch. Highly recommended.

I had heard many great things about Tabb's in the past, I can't believe it took me so long to visit. Very friendly welcome by Debbie and Sophie and the service didn't falter once, even down to my chilled glass of Pinot Grigio which was very reasonably priced. The food was amazing, the presentation and quality of ingredients was first class. The mushroom soup with fresh bread is a reason to visit by itself. To start I had the sea bream which was cooked to perfection, for main course I had the steak, cooked to the chef's suggestion and which cut like butter. Pudding was the chocolate marquise with black treacle ice cream, sounds as wonderful as it tasted. The cozy surroundings of the restaurant enhanced the evening and meeting Nigel at the end of the meal was a treat in itself. If you are staying in Truro, or even passing through, Tabb's is a place not to be missed. Thanks to all for a great evening.

Sometimes you just need a great meal out and this was just what we needed to lift us after a hard week. Nigel Tabb’s Sunday roasts are a fabulous four course treat. This time there was a glass of cava to start and coffee to end four perfect courses. The roast venison and accompanying seasonal vegetables was exceptional. The Cote du Rhône Village I chose to go with it was great. Service was a good as the food. There is nothing more annoying than to have great food let down by poor service. This never happens at Tabb’s.

Nigel Tabb put on one of his Sunday roast menus as an evening meal between Christmas and the New Year. It was a fabulous meal which was perfectly executed. I think I would have preferred the mulled wine on arrival rather than in place of coffee at the end of the four courses but this is being a bit picky. The Guinea fowl was the highlight for me but I love Guinea fowl and Nigel cooks it perfectly. This was a great idea. I hope it is repeated.

The food at Tabb's was absolutely excellent. We certainly felt that the chef was trying to distinguish himself with flair and the service was outstanding in terms of culinary knowledge. It's very easy to get a parking spot - at least in the evenings - and that's a big advantage. It was a shame that the restaurant was so quiet, although perhaps it was the back end of the tourist season. Food of that quality should be attended by far more diners. Perhaps it's the interior, which I felt was rather drab, with decor that wasn't particularly well thought out. I felt that the menu selections were just a shade limiting too notwithstanding the fact that fine dining restaurants will typically have a small menu.

Due to Covid 19 I booked this restaurant at least a month or so in advance of our trip to Cornwall. As usual I spent time looking for good places to eat while we were going to be away. I had booked a lovely cottage in Fowey, which meant that we really needed to travel for some good eats.Nigel - chef/owner was very good at communicating, even sending a confirmation email & Covid guidelines reminder on the day of reservation. The restaurant is set away from the hustle & bustle of Truro city, on street parking was easy just a short walk away.Due to the new restrictions, the covers for the restaurant have obviously been reduced, this sadly means that there was little ambiance now, due to the seating was well spaced. This was done to provide staff and guests safe distancing, so to be expected. However we received a warm greeting on arrival, we were seated at our table and perused the menu & wine list. The menu was reasonably extensive considering that Nigel cooks alone, and actually provides a great choice of tasty & beautifully presented dishes for a one man team along with Debbie his wife, a very friendly, pleasant & well informed lady front of house. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the wine was great too, loved the extra little touches. Many thanks for a very enjoyable evening definitely worth the drive!

Having moved to Cornwall 8 years ago, and only just getting to Tabb's is a mistake. Having rectified the mistake and visited last night I now realise how big this mistake was, but I won't be making it again. The COVID-19 based precautions that are being taken are sensible and should give confidence to all planning a visit, an email before we arrived, telling us what we can expect and what we should do was a great touch. The welcome itself was lovely and warm and at no point were we rushed or made to feel anything but welcome. Excellent! The food, well, it was excellent. The pre-starter soup shot was amazing, the scallops to start were cooked perfectly and served on a delicious slice of local drakes pudding, the duck breast was full of flavour and cooked perfectly with a delicious beetroot stir-fry, the accompanying veg great, the cheesecake dessert was so light and delicious and the wine selection was very good.We were extremely full, content and happy after a really clever and well executed meal and enjoyable experience.I have found my new favourite restaurant, and will not be waiting anywhere near the 8 years it took me to book up before returning. I was told a they could a goats cheese salad which was great but then was told , did I not want the soup but unfortunately it had blue cheese in it which I dont like I asked if I could have a minute to think she came back and suggested goats cheese beetroot and mushrooms stew which again was not to my liking I wasnt trying to be difficult but she clearly wasn’t happy as her food suggestions didn’t work for me as I don’t like mushrooms when she walked back to take our order she said are you staying!!! Wow she needs some customer service skills! Part of working in a restaurant is that from time to time there will be a few fussy customers and how you deal with the person and the situation is key to your success. Service is very important.Add insult to injury she said gave us some sort of mushroom soup palette cleanser and said directly to me will you like that to which i replied YES she replied I wasn’t trying to insult u. The waitress looked and behaved as if she didn’t want to be there and certainly didn’t make us feel welcome. It was all very rushed and from the moment we got in we felt we were being harried to finish and get out, which was strange as there was only one other table occupied in the whole place. Although the individual elements of the dishes were well cooked, the combinations on the plate were just odd, like the chef was trying to be too clever and it just didn’t work.At over 100 pounds for 2 courses and wine, it wasn’t cheap, maybe we got a bad night but we won’t be going back

A mid evening arrival in Truro and a walk down from the Station to our hotel and we stumbled across this unassuming restaurant and looked at the menu and decided to give it a go. what with being tired after a long journey. What an unexpected delight this turned out to be. The restaurant from the outside is almost un-noticeable. Inside it's not too large. The welcome was sincere as we hadn't booked. The menu was well crafted. I had the Red Gurnard which was superb. There was a great choice of starter, and a wonderful tempting list of deserts both of which I resisted. We were a small teacup of mushroom and garlic soup with our bread which served well as an appetiser rather than a starter. A decent wine list to tempt and tease every diner and the table was refreshed with tap water as required without asking. The service was unobtrusive, If there was music, I never noticed it, and all in all a memorable mean on a mid winters evening after a long journey. If you are looking for delicious fine dining at reasonable prices, with a diverse and interesting menu, go to Tabbs. We went here after the Festival of Lights Parade on a cold and windy night. It was our first visit but we will definitely be back. From the warm welcome to the delicious food, it was a truly delightful find. I was going to eat from the set menu (at a very reasonable £25 for 3 courses, with good choices on offer) but was tempted instead by the fish chowder with lemongrass and ginger as a starter. Absolutely delicious with subtle but distinct 'Thai' flavours and just what was needed to warm me up. Both my husband and I had the beef fillet with accompanying 'pan' of shin of beef casserole. The beef was delicious, tender and tasty and to be highly recommended. It was onwards and upwards and after 2 fabulous courses, we felt we had to make sure the desserts lived up to the same standard - and they did. The cardamom ice-cream was a revelation which they were happy to substitute for the banana sorbet with the very rich and decadent chocolate dessert. Thank you Tabbs for welcoming us on a rather quiet night, we are so glad we found you.

Nigel takes great pride in his cooking and Debbie is so correct in her service without being the least bit stuffy as you can find in other top restaurants. The combination is a perfect and incredibly relaxed lunch. Nigel came out at the end of service and it was great to talk to the chef. If you have not tried one of Nigel’s Sunday specials, I understand that there are still some spaces left for the two dates in August. Check the website for details.

Had a great dinner at this intimate restaurant - food was excellent quality and we really wanted to give 5 stars, but our overall experience was a bit less than that purely because the front of house, though very efficient, was rather brusque! We weren’t asked to try our wine - it was just sloshed into our glasses...... But our food was well worth a visit and we shall go back!

The restaurant is nicely situated on the outskirts of the old town of Truro. It was not busy when we went but the atmosphere was pleasant and the service helpful.

Nigel Tabb is the best chef in town and further afield for that matter. His menus are well crafted and brilliantly balanced. You will get excellent food cooked with passion and care. The same passion and care will be seen in the service you receive. The wine list is exceptional value for money with a selection of sensational offerings by the glass and by the bottle. This is a special dining experience not to be missed. Booking is essential.

Having had a superb meal on my first visit in February, I chose Tabbs for the April outing of my village Ladies Dining Club. The nineteen members of our group who had a meal there last night were unanimous in their praise of the delicious food we were served and of the very attentive and discreet service we received. A resounding culinary success! I can't wait to go back!

A thoroughly enjoyable experience, good food in pleasant surroundings with excellent service. Difficult to as for much more. The soup as a pre-starter was a nice touch - small but vert tasty. Nice combinations of fresh local produce in a limited but well thought out menu. Deservedly popular, so booking essential at weekends even in winter.

Nigel Tabb is a top chef who uses the best of local ingredients to produce excellent fine dining experiences. This review follows a dinner before Christmas and a Sunday lunch in January. Both meals were brilliant although quite different. The dinner was an intimate meal for two while the lunch was with friends. In each case the service matched the situation and enabled us to enjoy the food and occasion. There is also an excellent wine list and a good selection of wines by the glasses to suit all tastes.

We had the restaurant to ourselves [party of 4]; first visit even though it's on our doorstep. Welcoming reception, shown to the small lounge whilst waiting for our friends, offered drinks. Perfect service throughout the evening. Comfortable dining areas with tables not too closely spaced. I'm always suspicious when the menu contains so many choices - how they all be done well. Here, we had a choice of 4 Mains - one beef, two fish and a vegetarian option. The 4 of us tried 3. All stunning. Fabulous flavours, presentation and portion - just right. A very comprehensive wine list that couldn't fail to please even the most discerning palette. We will definitely be back!

A real gem. Exquisite food beautifully arranged. Mushroom starters, followed by game soup, belly of pork with new potatoes and roasted sea salt courgettes to die for! Finished with sticky toffee pudding with hand-made ice-cream, washed down with a blended Shiraz and pot of peppermint tea. A good, clean, aesthetically-pleasing establishment and polite, attentive staff. They have earnt everyone of the five stars, would definitely recommend.

Some restaurants have a brigade of chefs and others have the chef/owner doing everything in the kitchen. Both can be excellent but Tabb’s is a one chef business that beats many of the larger establishments. Nigel Tabb produces flavour and texture combinations that are as good as anyone’s and better than most. His current teaming of scallops with chicken thighs is brilliant. The menu is not the most extensive but every dish is well thought out and wonderfully executed. There is a wine list that has a choice for all diners with a good selection by the glass. The prices are most reasonable for the quality of wines on offer. Service is top notch and as formal or friendly as the customer wants. Booking is essential.

We visited Tabbs restaurant last night after reading reviews and a recommendation we were not disappointed.. On arrival we were greeted and seated straight away by a friendly hostess. We were offered a set menu as well as an a la carte menu to choose from, and all of which sounded lovely. For starters we had the black pasta, smoked duck and deep fried egg with truffle oil! OMG it smelt gorgeous and tasted amazing! I don't think I have eaten something so slow in my life as I did not want it to end. For mains we had the seared beef fillet and braised shin with a peppercorn horseradish cream, paprika potato's and deep fried courgette with what looked like a light tempura coating on which were amazing. The beef fillet and shin was extremely tender and full of flavour and the horseradish and peppercorn sauce was divine, needless to say I also savoured every mouthful. For desert my wife had the sticky toffee pudding and I had the chocolate fondant and black treacle ice cream, both were amazing. I cannot recommend Tabbs highly enough, and I my eye it is the best restaurant in the area and should be listed as number 1 in Truro. We were that impressed we booked for another evening before we left the restaurant and we can't wait to return. This was a fine dinning experience and great value for money.

Tabb's is very pretty on the inside, with pastel colours, and an elegant menu. The dark chocolate sorbet that we had was very authentic, I had never tried something with just that taste. I recommend it for special occasions, the duck is so good.

Have promised ourselves a visit for years and finally got round to it tonight, and I have to say we are all really pleased we did. We will definitely be back. The uninviting back street location belies a wonderfully warm and inviting ambience as you enter. Only one other couple to begin with but the place gently filled as the evening progressed. Fine dining is the genre and everyone really enjoyed their various starters and mains. The desserts, though beautifully presented were OK. Not a wine buff, I chose the Argentinian Malbec, and all agreed it was a great choice. Tabbs thoroughly lived up to the very high reputation it has earned on TA.

A group of 8/9 of us meet up every year and this year it was Truro. This year there were 8 of us and we selected from the set menu. I had the chicken followed by the duck. Others had the hake. The “amuse bouche” was a mushroom soup, which should have been a menu option! The deserts options were very interesting and many chose the panacotta or raspberry/choc marquise. All remarked that it was a super meal. We were really impressed by the great service and value for money. What a gem!

Visited 10 years ago on recommendation of a friend. Returned this evening for an anniversary meal as we were visiting the area. Staff were exceptionally helpful in adapting each dish for a dairy and gluten free diner. Each course was full of flavour and a real delight. Initially courses were being turned around rather quickly for the relaxed evening we wanted, but as soon as we mentioned this the pace settled nicely. Service was very friendly. Looking forward to our next visit!

This was an evening out for dinner and chat with friends. The menu was quite limited which is usually a good sign. This was no exception; the food was excellent, sensible portions and sensible prices. Between us we had Confit Duck and Hake. Everyone enjoyed the meal. Sweets were equally well received. A good wine list with acceptable prices and friendly service.
